10. Why Is Everyone Talking About Weight Loss Medications?07 Jul 202300:13:46

Consider this shocking statistic: As recently as 1995, only 15.8% of adults in the U.S. had the disease obesity, which is currently defined as a BMI of 30 or higher.

Today, that number has skyrocketed to a jaw dropping 43%! And when you include those with a BMI over 25, the definition of overweight, over ⅔ of US adults have either obesity or overweight.

Do you believe that we collectively lost our willpower during the past 30 - 40 years? No way. Something is changing in our environment. We don’t have all of the answers, but we DO have some scientific explanations for pieces of the weight gain puzzle.

If you carry excess weight, please know that it is not your fault. The science is very clear that this is NOT a disease of willpower. It’s not a personality flaw. This is a DISEASE and for many people it is a chronic progressive disease.

Fortunately, we have new, science based tools, including medications, to help us fight this trend. Join Dr. Lisa as she gives an overview of why you might consider medication for weight loss. The information in today's podcast is for information only and should not be considered medical advice. Please speak with your own health care provider about your person situation and whether or not medication is right for you.

In today's episode of the SWLC Podcast, Lisa Oldson, MD opens up about an intensely personal period of acute stress, and uses that story to jump into the science behind chronic stress, hormonal shifts, and weight gain in women.

  • Why ghrelin is more than just a "hunger hormone"
  • How stress-related hormone shifts lead to abdominal fat, leptin resistance, and overeating
  • Why weight gain under stress is not your fault, and what science says we can do about it
  • The critical role of support, therapy, medications, and mindful self-compassion in lasting change
