Understanding School Contracts26 Aug 202400:34:42

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, we chat with Elise Mitchell, the founder of the Therapy Support Network, who shares her journey from burnout to thriving as an independent contractor. Elise, who graduated from Missouri State University in 2013 with an M.S. CCC-SLP, initially spent six years working for virtual staffing companies. She took on various roles, including an SLP, school salesperson, and manager.

However, after years of managing virtual services and dealing with provider management, Elise experienced burnout and low job satisfaction, prompting her to stay away from the school staffing industry. It was then that an unexpected opportunity to directly contract with a school presented itself. Elise found a renewed passion for working with schools, but this time as an independent contractor rather than an employee, allowing her to fully enjoy her work and maximize her career potential.

In 2019, Elise established The Therapist Support Network with the mission of equipping school-based SLP, OT, and PT contractors with essential resources, a supportive community, and ongoing assistance. She developed key tools such as “The School Contractor Packet,” “School Contractor Training,” and "The School Staffing Packet and Training."

Here’s what we learned:

  • Transitioning from staffing agencies to independent contracting.
  • Benefits of earning 100% of contract profits.
  • Importance of entrepreneurial mindset.
  • Pricing services competitively and sustainably.
  • Unique challenges faced by SLPs compared to OTs and PTs.
  • Building local relationships and exploring hybrid private practice models.
  • Growing trend of therapists hiring other therapists, especially in underserved rural areas.
  • Establishing fair rates that reflect experience and ensure sustainability.
  •  Practical aspects of calculating service minutes and billing for direct and indirect time.

Everything You Need To Know About Working With Your School Psych with Briana Wagner26 Sep 202200:28:46

Do you work with the school psychologist?

In this episode, I’m switching things up and talking with a bilingual school psychologist, Briana Wagner. She’s here to chat about how SLPs can collaborate with the school psychologist, social skills, and so much more!

Briana Wagner is a bilingual school psychologist and the founder of @EducationallyPsyched, a community dedicated to easy-to-understand information about special education, school psychology, and supporting students with diverse needs.

I have always said that when you start at a new school, the school psychologist is one of the most important people you need to develop a close working relationship with. There are so many important ways we can collaborate together to help our students get the best possible outcome when it comes to speech.

Looking at things that the school psychologist looks at regularly might not be our domain, but it can help us greatly inside our therapy rooms to understand what type of help our students need and how we can set them up for more success in their regular classrooms as well.

Tune in to hear more about how to make the most of your relationship with the school psychologist and how you can work together to help your students succeed.

Why I Don't Take Data The Entire Session19 Sep 202200:12:50

I do not take data during the entire session, and I’m sharing why in this episode. I know there are some exceptions to the rules because administrations or districts require one thing or another, but I want to convince you to think about data a little bit differently.

I’m not saying not to take data, just not to take it the entire session. Imagine that as you’re working, someone came and observed you and jotted down notes the entire time. You would be pretty nervous right? Imagine how our students feel. If they are constantly being assessed, they’re going to have some anxiety and it could affect their ability to perform optimally.

If we are constantly evaluating our students, when will we have time to teach them? With things like articulation, studies show that the more drilling, the better. But you can’t do that if you’re evaluating them all the time.

The more you focus on the child in front of you and the anecdotal data versus the data marks, the more they will be engaged. They are going to be more willing to take risks and have a better understanding of what it takes to be successful. That itself is so much more valuable than the data marks.

Tune in to learn more about why I don’t take data the entire session and how you can start focusing on the child more for better outcomes.

If I Don't Have A Prize Bin...12 Sep 202200:11:37

What prizes and reward systems do you use with your older students?

This is a question I get asked pretty often, especially at the beginning of the year. I have had many different reward systems in my career, but as of now, I don’t actually have a reward system in place for my older speech therapy students.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing the systems I have used in the past, why they didn’t work, and why I stopped using them altogether. While I don’t use reward systems, there are other ways I like to motivate my students that work amazingly well without being a distraction.

Speech can be fun and engaging without using prizes. Time is precious in the speech room, and we need to use it wisely. If we can motivate students in other ways while they’re there, we can build their confidence without giving them another sticker.

Sometimes just giving students that verbal praise that they might not get throughout the day otherwise is enough motivation. Showing them that you’re listening and that you care about how they’re doing is enough.

Tune in to learn more about how I keep my students motivated without stickers and prizes and how you can start intrinsically motivating your students to learn today.

Visual Supports Can Create Predictable Systems with Tara Tuchel05 Sep 202200:30:12

Are you using visuals in your speech therapy classroom?

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, we are breaking away from only talking about older speech therapy students to talk about something that can be used with any age: visual supports!

Visual supports are things like pictures, lists, or drawings that help students with autism communicate. They can make a huge difference in your students’ speech therapy outcomes. I sat down with Tara Tuchel from Autism Little Learners to dive into the topic of visuals and how she uses them to help her autistic students reach their goals.

Tara is a speech/language pathologist who has been teaching young autistic children for over 2 decades. She has the unique position to run her own communication-based classroom and team-teach with a special education teacher. She started Autism Little Learners in March of 2019.

Tara now has a monthly product membership and an online course (Visual Schedules Made Easy) where she shares resources and activities for educators and parents of young autistic children.

Using Bloom's Taxonomy To Know Where to Start29 Aug 202200:14:36

Do you struggle to figure out where to go with your older speech students?

If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have heard me talk about how language comprehension is such an integral part of learning and reading. In order to be successful readers, our students need good decoding skills.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing why I use Bloom’s Taxonomy to determine what to do with my older speech therapy students. They have to be able to engage with the text, think about it, and answer questions, and we as SLPs can help them get there.

It’s so important that we determine a goal that is appropriate for our students, not just what they’re working on in the classroom. Thinking differently about how we determine the goal we're working on with our students can really help us feel confident about what we are working on and know that we can make a true difference.

Tune in to learn more about how I use Bloom’s Taxonomy to determine what my students need help with so that I can meet them where they are at and help them achieve their goals.

Listening to Autistic Voices with Katja Piscitelli22 Aug 202200:14:54

Are you familiar with neurodiversity-affirming teaching methods?

Every day, I see so many questions from other SLPs on this topic, so today on SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Katja Piscitelli to talk about these methods so that you can get all of your questions answered and start the year off confident with autistic students on your caseload.

Katja Piscitelli is a speech therapist, dog mom, and Disney lover. She supports autistic students and their families through neurodiversity-affirming, child-led therapy. She also specializes in supporting gestalt language development (echolalia).

Katja believes in listening to the communities we serve to guide our practice, and she loves sharing what she learns from the Autistic community and her experiences with students with all of you!

There is a shift happening in the way we teach autistic students in speech therapy. Instead of teaching them to be more like us, we are learning to teach them differently in a way that affirms who they are and how their brains work.

Katja has a wealth of knowledge and tips to share on this topic. Tune in to learn more about why listening to autistic voices is so important, tips for teaching self-advocacy and perspective taking, the top tips and tools for working with autistic students, and so much more.

How To Plan For Your Speech Sessions In Minutes15 Aug 202200:20:02

Are you ready to cut your planning time down drastically?

In this week’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing how you can plan your speech therapy sessions in minutes. Yes, you read that right! Not weeks, not hours—minutes. This is my framework for planning my speech therapy sessions in minutes, and sometimes even seconds.

Planning for each individual student on your caseload would take hours, which no one wants to do. If you have been following me for a while, you know that no matter what goal I am working on in the classroom, I like to plan my lessons around a theme or concept to make planning easier.

We only have so much time to get our lesson planning done for our students. We have to work smarter and not harder when it comes to lesson planning for all of those kids. Using themes is just one of the ways I do that.

Tune in to this episode to learn how to get your time back and get your lesson planning done in a few minutes, no matter the size of your caseload.

It Is a Brand New School Year: Let’s Set Ourselves up for Success08 Aug 202200:20:38

Are you ready for a brand new school year?

I know many of us are still in summer mode right now but there are also many that are headed back to school, so in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I’m sharing my best tips for setting yourself up for success this year.

I hope that you had some time to relax and reenergize this summer. It is so important that you are able to rest so that you can start refreshed and ready to go come fall.

I have found that the more I do during the first week of school, the more successful the year is. I feel less overwhelmed and more prepared when things get chaotic.

There are some things that I do every year that help me get going and be more prepared. It doesn’t have to be fancy or elaborate to be effective. It’s about using your time wisely now while things are calm so that you can prepare yourself for when you don’t have the extra time.

Tune in to hear how I organize my data binder, spreadsheets, and calendar for a more successful school year.

So How Do We Decide What Goals To Work on?01 Aug 202200:14:07

How do you decide what goals to work on during therapy sessions?

I am often asked about what goals to work on based on the results of the standardized tests that we are given. However, I actually don’t like to base my goals on those results.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing how I actually decide on goals for my speech therapy students.

We all know that we have to generate an IEP and deal with the higher-ups and funding so we do need those standardized tests to justify our services. However, if we make our goals based on what they did wrong on the tests, we will be working on the same things for years and years.

We are here to work on tasks that are similar to those assessments, but we need to work on more than just those tasks. The things they do on those tests are not what they are going to need to do in society.

When determining goals, the best thing you can do is get as much information on the student as possible. Tune in to learn how I conduct assessments in my speech therapy practice and how I use them to pick the right goals for my students.

SLPs and Selective Mutism with Joleen Fernald25 Jul 202200:31:25

Selective mutism is a topic that I know many SLPs have lots of questions about, and I haven’t had the right answers. Luckily, in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I have special guest Joleen Fernald on to talk about everything you need to know about selective mutism.

Joleen R. Fernald, Ph.D., CCC-SLP was awarded Board Specialty Recognition in Child Language from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Fernald follows Greenspan and Wieder’s model, DIRFloortime®, when working with children and families.

She has a special interest in the social-emotional development of young children and its impact on their speech and language skills. As a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Fernald works with children who have a variety of communication disorders.

Since selective mutism is an anxiety-based disorder, it can be confusing for SLPs to understand our role in helping students, but it's important to remember that this affects their social communication and we are the experts in that.

Tune in to learn more about what selective mutism is, what causes it, and how we can best support and help our students with this condition.

128: What Is Gestalt Language Processing (And How Does It Look for the Older Students)?! with Alexandria Zachos11 Jul 202200:30:53

Have you heard of Gestalt Language Processing?

This is something that many SLPs don’t actually know a lot about but understanding it can make a huge impact on your students.  We have always been told to redirect echolalia, but kids that communicate that way are gestalt language processors, and it’s important to understand how to help them.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Alexandria Zachos to talk about gestalt language processing and how you can incorporate this knowledge into your therapy practice.

Alexandria is a licensed speech-language pathologist in the state of Illinois and has been practicing since 2003.  Over the past eighteen years, she has provided therapy for all ages in a variety of clinical settings, including public schools, home therapy, acute care, rehabilitation hospitals, and outpatient clinics.

Tune in to learn more about what gestalt language processing is, therapy activities you can do with these students, how to collect data during these types of lessons, and so much more!

127: Dynamic Assessment and More with Nia Thomas04 Jul 202200:23:31

Have you ever struggled to diagnose an English language learner because you aren’t sure if it’s a difference or a disorder?

Many SLPs struggle with this because we don’t want to be wrong about a diagnosis just because our student is learning the English language. The most effective way for us to really understand our ELLs is to use dynamic assessments and language sampling instead of standardized tests.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Nia Thomas to talk about how you can use dynamic assessments to determine if your students really have a speech disorder or if it’s just a difference.

Nia Thomas is a school-based bilingual speech-language pathologist, educator, and storyteller from NYC. She graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Disorders and Black Studies. She went on to obtain her Master’s in Science from Teacher’s College, Columbia University.

A two-time Writing Our Lives alumni, Nia has written for Bustle, Remezcla, Fierce by Mitú, ASHA Leader Live, and other online publications. She is also the founder and editor of Bilingual Speech Resources.

Tune in to learn about why dynamic assessments and language samples are so much more effective with ELL students, tools and resources you can use, and so much more.

126: How a Mom Helped Her Child Communicate with Natashia Kletter27 Jun 202200:23:34

Do you work with a lot of students with communication difficulties?

It can be so hard to watch a child struggle to tell you what they need. We have strategies in place to help them learn, but it takes time and it can be frustrating for children in those situations. In this week’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Natashia Kletter to talk about how she created books that help children with communication challenges tell you what they want to say.

Natashia is the mother of an autistic boy who also has a rare genetic disorder and a daughter who has ADHD. She developed an assistive communication system for nonspeaking children, using her Mechanical Engineering degree and what she learned from her own son. She's now helping children around the world communicate in their own homes with more efficiency and fun.

Natashia’s books are being used in homes and classrooms with children that have difficulty communicating and the feedback she gets from teachers and parents has been inspiring. The kids are able to express themselves easily and feel heard for the first time.

These books are a great addition to any speech therapy classroom. They can be a valuable tool for working with students with autism or other disorders that make speaking a challenge in a way that is fun and easy to understand.

To learn more about Natashia and how her books are changing the way nonverbal children are communicating with their parents, caregivers, and teachers, make sure to tune in.

125: Neurodiversity-Affirming Approaches to Social and Emotional Learning with Meg Proctor20 Jun 202200:27:25

Have you ever heard of the neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy?

For many years, we have been taught to teach students how to adapt to the world around them, but what if we approach it differently? The neurodiversity-affirming approach means that you work with autistic kids in a way that doesn’t ask them to fundamentally change who they are.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Meg Proctor to talk about how you can start offering therapy that is respectful towards the autistic community and doesn’t teach them to be inauthentic to themselves.

Meg offers neurodiversity-affirming, strengths-based trainings to OTs and SLPs who want to be more confident, effective, and affirming in their work with autistic kids.

Meg also hosts the podcast Two Sides of the Spectrum, designed to help neurotypical therapists better take the perspective of our autistic clients. Meg’s website, learnplaythrive.com, hosts a variety of free resources as well as CE trainings registered for AOTA and ASHA CEUs.

We have to let go of our neurotypical biases when working with autistic children. By teaching our students in the way that they need to be taught, we can get much better results and more motivation from them.

Tune in to learn more about the neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy and how you can start utilizing this method in your therapy practice today.

124: Help Our Students Hear with Madison Levine13 Jun 202200:26:16
As SLPs, we work with students with all different backgrounds, and for some, that means hearing difficulties. For many SLPs, this is a challenge because students that need hearing aids have unique needs that we may not always feel qualified to assist with.

On this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Madison Levine, a hearing instrument specialist, to talk about hearing services for our students and how we can take an active role in helping students make the most of their hearing aids.

Madison Levine founded her audiology practice, Levine Hearing, in Charlotte, NC, in 2015. She followed in the footsteps of her mother, who showed her what it looked like to have a successful career and balance a family as well.

Besides feeling unprepared to help with hearing aids, one of the biggest challenges is when students are reluctant to use them. Hearing aids can make things feel uncomfortably loud in a way they aren’t used to and it can be jarring, however, this isn’t something that they can avoid.

The key to working with students like this is trust. Building rapport is the best way to get through to them when they are struggling to come around to their hearing aids. By building a good relationship, you can get through to them and help them understand why their hearing aids are important.

Tune in to learn more about how you can embrace learning about hearing instruments and help your students in the best way possible.

123: Ways to Diversify the Field, Implicit Bias, & Barriers with DiverCity SLP06 Jun 202200:34:21
There is an unfortunate lack of diversity within the speech-language pathology profession.

With it being a predominantly white profession, that means that a large majority of SLP materials lack diversity as well. In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Christina Royster and Courtney Overton from DiveryCity SLP to discuss the things that they are doing to increase diversity and representation within the field so that all children feel included.

In 2018, Ana-Maria Jaramillo, Courtney Overton, and Christina Royster created DiverCity SLP in order to increase diversity in the field of speech-language pathology. DiverCity SLP presents at local high schools with a high enrollment of underrepresented communities.

They speak with students about the need for more speech-language pathologists of color. Since the pandemic, DiverCity SLP has evolved to include workshops and seminars on a national level. Topics include anti-racist practices, appropriate evaluations and treatment techniques for diverse populations, culturally and linguistically sustaining approaches, and high school career outreach programs.

Just because the profession lacks diversity now doesn’t mean that it has to stay that way! There are tools, resources, and other things you can do within your SLP practice that will improve the inclusivity of your lessons.

Tune in to hear more about dynamic assessments, the importance of understanding your students’ culture, where to find resources that are more representative of all people and cultures, and so much more.

122: Advice From A Resource Room Teacher with Amanda Wilp30 May 202200:31:14

Do you have routines established for your speech room?

There are so many benefits to having an established routine in place in your speech therapy practice that many don’t think of. Routines help students get the practice they need to reach their goals faster, and it helps you with planning and progress monitoring.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Amanda Wilp to talk about collaborating with classroom teachers, teaching strategies, and how to establish effective routines that will set you up for success all year long.

Amanda has been teaching for ten years and she loves what she does. As a resource room teacher, she loves having her students year after year and getting to know their strengths, weaknesses, interests, and families. She’s currently teaching 2nd and 3rd grade special education but has spent most of her time with kindergarten through 3rd grade students.

After years of basically living at school, she decided that something had to give. She needed to develop a set of interventions to help resource room teachers deliver great intervention without living at school every. single. day.

Tune in to learn more about why routines matter, how they help you and your students, tips for working with classroom teachers, organization ideas, and so much more.

121: AAC Doesn't Have To Be Scary with Kate Thomson23 May 202200:21:46

How do you feel about AAC devices?

If you think everything surrounding AAC is a little scary, you’re not alone! Many SLPs feel this way, but it doesn't have to be scary! AAC devices can benefit our students in so many ways, you just have to understand it and be patient.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Kate Thomson to dive into the topic of AAC and what you need to know about using these devices to help your students reach their speech goals.

Kate is a go-getter who established the first SpeechEase clinic in Townsville two days a week while still working full-time in her government job. She saw a huge need for speech therapy services in Mackay when the NDIS started and began providing services there on the weekends until there was enough demand to open a second clinic. Kate is also Branch Chair for the Queensland Branch of Speech Pathology Australia and regularly provides supervision and mentorship to early career and senior Speech Pathologists.

As a speechie, Kate loved helping unlock a clients’ communication abilities using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) so they could show the world who they are and what they know.

The power of the principles and frameworks he teaches became immensely clear after finding a cancerous tumor in his bladder larger than a baseball in June 2019. His cancer journey followed by people's financial struggles through the pandemic highlighted the immediate and urgent need for others to get access to these powerful principles. This personal journey, combined with the financial upheavals many faced during the pandemic, became the seeds for his soon-to-be-released book (Hay House Publishing - June 11, 2024), Build Your Money Machine: How to Get Your Money to Work Harder For You Than You Did For it!.

As a frequent guest on some of the top shows and podcasts where he shares his thought leadership around achievement, financial freedom, affluence, and building businesses of impact. Here’s what we learned:

  • Financial literacy is crucial for SLPs, regardless of their income level, to achieve financial freedom and reduce stress.
  • Building wealth requires discipline and consistency, not necessarily a large income.
  • It’s important to be proactive and intentional in managing finances.
  • Debt management is key to financial wellness, with strategies such as using a free Excel tool for tracking debt repayment and automating payments to streamline the process.
  • Investing in diversified, low-fee portfolios like index funds and ETFs is recommended for SLPs to grow their retirement savings effectively.
  • Starting retirement planning early is essential to take advantage of compounding interest and to ensure a comfortable retirement.

120: We Are Not A Reading Teacher16 May 202200:11:58

How are SLPs different than reading teachers?

This is a question I see a lot in my SLP Elevate membership. People want to know how we can differentiate ourselves from a standard reading teacher and show our value without just doing the same thing over and over. Some even wonder why students even come to us for things like this.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I want to really dive into this question. I want to share how we as SLPs are, in fact, very different from reading teachers, and how we can differentiate our instruction.

Yes, our students are working on things like the main idea, summarizing, inferencing, and answering questions in their regular classroom. What you have to remember is that decoding times language comprehension equals reading comprehension. A student can’t be an effective reader if they do not have adequate language skills, and that is where we fit into the puzzle.

We are the ones that focus on that integral piece of education. We work on sentence structure, categorization, syntax, vocabulary, auditory memory, and so much more. We are the ones going deep into those skills and strategies that our students really need to succeed.

Make sure to tune in today to hear my best tips for differentiating your lessons to highlight your unique position in your students' educational experience.

119: Collaborating with Your Sped with Ashley Lutz09 May 202200:24:48
Let’s talk about special education!

As SLPs, many of us work closely with special education teachers. Collaboration is an important part of helping students reach their goals. Sometimes that’s easier said than done though. There is a lot that goes into each role, and it can be easy to lose sight of that and get frustrated when things don’t go as planned.

The key is to come up with a strategy that works for you and your SPED teacher. In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with a special education teacher, Ashley Lutz, to talk about things like working collaboratively, how SPED views speech therapy, and so much more.

Ashley has been working in Special Education for 10 years. She was a middle school self-contained teacher for 8 years working with students with intellectual disabilities. She just began her third year as a special education inclusion teacher in an elementary setting.

If you are ready to ditch the overwhelm and frustration when it comes to collaborating with the SPED teacher and focusing on your students' needs, you don’t want to miss this episode because Ashley is sharing her top tips for making that happen.

118: From Surviving to Thriving as an SLP with Barbara Fernandes02 May 202200:27:22

Do you use gaming and technology in speech therapy?

One of the keys to getting students more engaged in their speech therapy sessions is utilizing their interests, and for many kids, that’s gaming and technology. A lot of SLPs are wary about incorporating those though because they don’t want to give children too much screen time. However, there is a difference between playing games or watching YouTube and participating in speech therapy on a screen.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I sat down with Barbara Fernandes to talk about her app, Speech & Language Academy, and why it is so beneficial in the speech classroom.

Barbara Fernandes, founder, and CEO of Smarty Ears is well known for her innovative and breakthrough product development for speech and communication disorders. For over a decade, Barbara has translated science into user-friendly and powerful technology to support individuals with communication disorders. Barbara transformed an entire industry to adopt mobile technologies through the design and development of over sixty mobile applications and an entire symbol library: Smarty Symbols.

As the founder of Smarty Symbols, Barbara also created the most inclusive, diverse, and comprehensive symbol library and developed a powerful new technology that is disrupting the special education field by providing a platform for custom visual support creation. Smarty Symbols has been adopted as the symbol of choice in many other technologies developed in the field.

Make sure to tune in to learn more about her app, how it works, and why you should start using it in your therapy practice today.

117: 3 Ways To Get More Buy In From Teachers To Work Together To Support Our Students25 Apr 202200:12:40

We know that working together with other professionals in the school is an amazing way to get better outcomes for our students, so in this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, we are talking about how to get more buy-in from teachers in order to better support our students.

When I first started working as a speech therapist, I had a lot of grand ideas of how I would collaborate and communicate with the teachers to help my students ace their tests and hit their goals. I went out of my way to check in with them so we could work together and…crickets!

When following up with them, I found that it was because they really didn’t understand what I do as an SLP and how I help students. They assume that all we do is help them with their speech and articulation, but we all know that’s not true.

Speech therapy can drastically improve a student’s educational outcomes when the teachers and SLPs work together. But how do we do that?

Tune in to this week’s episode to hear my top three tips for opening up the conversion with the teachers without making them feel like even more work is being thrown at them.

116: Literacy-Based Therapy Part 3: After Reading Activities18 Apr 202200:15:37

Let’s talk about after-reading activities for speech therapy!

This is the last part of a three-part series all about literacy-based therapy. In the last episode, I covered during-reading activities that you can do to make sure your students are understanding what they’re reading, critically thinking, and taking good notes. In the episode before that, I shared some before-reading activities that would get your students excited about reading and assess their background knowledge.

Stretching out your reading lessons before, during, and after reading is a great way to really dive deep into the text and help your students grasp important elements and concepts.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, we are diving into my favorite activities to do after reading a text. This allows your students to have a more in-depth understanding of what they read and what they learned.

Reading strategies that take place after reading are used to summarize, wrap up, and finalize the information that they have learned or should have learned while reading. We don’t want to teach students that you're done with a book after reading it. We want them to think deeply and learn from it!

After-reading strategies are just as important as the ones you did before and during. This isn’t something that you want to skip over! Make sure to tune in to hear my favorite strategies, ideas, and tools to complete after-reading activities in my speech therapy sessions.

115: Literacy-Based Therapy Part 2: During Reading Activities11 Apr 202200:15:09
Let’s talk about activities you can do while reading in speech therapy!

This episode of SLP Coffee Talk is part two of my three-part series on literacy-based therapy activities. In the last episode, we talked about different activities you can do before starting a book or text in your speech therapy classroom.  In this episode, we are diving into what to do while they are reading.

There are so many benefits to doing during-reading activities in speech. It allows students to monitor their own comprehension and understanding of the text, and it also allows us to monitor their understanding as well and see what areas they need a little extra help with.

Make sure to tune in to hear more about during-reading activities and ways to use them in your speech therapy classroom. If you haven’t already, check out the last episode to learn about before-reading activities, and don’t miss next week's episode on after-reading activities!

114: Literacy-Based Therapy Part 1: Before Reading Activities04 Apr 202200:14:08
If you know me, you know that I love incorporating books and literacy-based activities into my speech therapy sessions!

It allows me to plan easily, quickly, and effectively. I can use one resource with as many groups as possible or even with mixed groups with many different goals. It also allows me to correlate what we do in speech therapy with what they are doing in their classrooms. This means I can mimic their classroom lessons and teach them how to use the strategies that we worked on in the speech room to improve their outcomes.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am talking all about before-reading activities. Why before reading? In order to incorporate reading lessons they may be doing in the classroom, we need to focus on before, during, and after reading activities.

This means you are doing a whole lesson before even starting a book or article! Doing this gives your students a better chance to grasp the text and understand the lessons.

Make sure to tune in to this episode to learn a ton of different before reading ideas, strategies, activities, and tools you can use in your speech therapy sessions.

This episode is the first part in a three-part series where I will be sharing activities you can do for each part of the process, so make sure to tune in next week to learn more about during reading activities!

113: Using Song Lyrics In Speech28 Mar 202200:10:24

Do you have students that love music?

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing one of my favorite tools to use in speech therapy, and it’s something that you might not have thought of before: song lyrics!

I use them all the time during my speech therapy sessions because it’s super fun and motivating, and it allows me to work on a ton of speech therapy goals.

I know that it can be a huge struggle to get our older students motivated in speech. They may be embarrassed to be there or frustrated or even a little annoyed. Many of them are aware of their difficulties and don’t want to be reminded of them all the time. It is so important that we try to be as mindful of that as possible and keep their interests in mind to make speech more enjoyable.

Many older students are really into music and TikTok dances, so using song lyrics is a great way to get them engaged! It’s so easy to just look up the lyrics, put them on your screen, and utilize them for speech activities.

So what sort of goals can you work on with song lyrics? There are so many! You can target articulation, vocabulary, imprinting, social skills, and so much more. The sky is the limit.

Tune in to hear why I love using song lyrics so much, how I use them in my classroom, the activities I use to target different goals, and how you can start using song lyrics in your speech sessions today.

109: 5 YouTube Channels for Nonfiction28 Feb 202200:13:02

Do you use videos in your speech therapy sessions?

A couple of weeks ago, I shared all about why I think you should be using nonfiction in your speech therapy sessions.

I know it is easy to reach for those favorite fiction resources, but studies show that using nonfiction is extremely valuable to students! It builds their background knowledge and improves their comprehension skills as well as their ability to make connections.

It doesn’t have to be a nonfiction text that you use, you can utilize other nonfiction resources too, like videos. Taking the reading aspect out of it makes it much more fun for struggling readers. It allows them to work on listening comprehension and build language skills, which will in turn improve their reading comprehension.

But where do you find quality nonfiction resources? There is a lot of content out there to sort through and it is so important that we ensure the videos we share are appropriate for our needs. Don’t worry, I have you covered! My favorite place to find nonfiction videos is YouTube!

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing with you the best nonfiction YouTube channels that you can turn to when you need videos for your speech therapy sessions!

Tune in to learn more about these YouTube channels and how I use them to target any goal in my speech therapy sessions.

107: Using Nonfiction Texts14 Feb 202200:11:13
Are you using nonfiction texts in speech?

I know as speech-language pathologists, we love our storybooks. It’s so easy to reach for a comforting story for any activity in the classroom. However, there is a ton of evidence to back up the idea that nonfiction texts are more beneficial to our speech therapy students than fiction texts are.

One of the main reasons they are more beneficial is that they provide background knowledge. Our students may really struggle in this area. Using nonfiction texts will help you work towards those important speech therapy goals while also providing your students with the background knowledge they really need.

This will in turn help them answer higher-level thinking questions in the classroom and help develop their reading skills and reading comprehension.

In other words, you are setting them up for success as they read nonfiction more and more in their regular classrooms!

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk,  I am sharing more about why I love using nonfiction texts in speech therapy so much, the tools and resources I use in my therapy sessions, as well as some tips for what goals you can work on using nonfiction texts.

Make sure to tune in to hear all of the juicy details so you can get started today!

106: Staying Positive and Even Laugh as an SLP with Dani Newcombe07 Feb 202200:25:13

Do you ever struggle with imposter syndrome?

Many SLPs, myself included, struggle with this feeling of not being good enough. That’s okay though! No one feels like they have it together all the time. It’s important that you self-reflect and remember those times when you knew you did an amazing job. This is the key to powering through those moments of doubt.

Today’s guest on SLP Coffee Talk is Dani Newcombe, and she is such an inspiring SLP to talk to. She has had her fair share of imposter syndrome moments and self-doubt, but she is the master at finding the humor and moments of joy, no matter the circumstance.

Dani Newcombe is a school and private practice SLP in Indiana. She graduated from Loma Linda University in 2018. She is currently on year 4 as an SLP. She owns her own practice, The Messy SLP, LLC,  and you can find her posting videos for comedic relief on Instagram.

It’s okay to not love what you do 100% of the time, and Dani isn’t afraid to talk about the hard parts along with the joyous parts.

104: Want to Learn More About Embedded Speech in the Classrooms? with Pamela Petralia24 Jan 202200:22:51

Have you heard of embedded speech in the classroom?

Embedded speech is basically when a speech therapist is in the classroom working with the teacher, or special education teacher, to reach student goals together. It’s a slightly more unique approach, but the collaboration is highly beneficial to our speech students.

By using this model, you can work together to help your students reach those goals and standards that may have felt unattainable before.

Wondering how it works? This episode of SLP Coffee Talk is for you! Pamela Petralia joined me to talk about what this is and how you can implement it in the classroom in a way that feels collaborative and beneficial for you, the teacher, and your students.

Pam has been a special education teacher for over 20 years and has worked in a variety of settings (self-contained, resource, k-2, middle school, etc.) She is the owner and creator behind Mrs. P's Specialties.

Pam is passionate about helping teachers find ways to engage students in meaningful activities that are tailored to their needs and levels without sacrificing their personal & family time.

103: Helping High Schoolers At Job Sites with Maureen Howard17 Jan 202200:23:20

Are your students prepared to join the workforce when they leave speech? As SLP’s, we are always thinking of tools and strategies that students can use when they are in the real world outside of the speech classroom.

One of the most important things we can do is help prepare students with the skills they need to find jobs and learn to be independent. This means teaching them how to communicate with others, teaching them simple tasks that will help them get hired, and taking them out in the world so that they can get practice interacting with others independently.

In today’s episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Maureen Howard from Spoonful of SPED to talk about how we can work together with special education teachers to give our students the technical and communication skills they need when they graduate out of speech therapy in school.

Maureen is a High School special education department chair dedicated to supporting teachers, families, and students to be successful in high school and beyond!

She has so much experience with high school students and she is sharing her best tips for working on these skills with our older students in a way that is relevant and interesting to them.

102: Working on Character Traits in Speech10 Jan 202200:13:10

Do you work on character traits during your speech therapy sessions?

You may be wondering why this is important in speech since students are already working on this in the classroom.

We want the things we are working on in speech to align with what students do in the classroom so that they can keep up with what is expected of them. It isn’t always as easy for our students as it is for other students and that’s where we come in.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, I am sharing my tips and strategies for helping students understand character traits in my speech therapy sessions. Character trait practice doesn’t have to be hard or complicated, it can be as simple as helping students describe their favorite characters.

Tune in for fun and practical tips, strategies, and games that you can use in your therapy session with your students to help build their confidence back in the classroom.

101: Working On Compare & Contrast in Speech03 Jan 202200:12:39

When most people think of the phrase “compare and contrast,” they think of using it to teach students to recognize the difference in colors and shapes.

As students age into upper grades, comparing and contrasting becomes even more important as they generalize the concept and make connections between what they are learning about in school and their own life.

In this episode of SLP Coffee Talk, we are talking all about teaching comparing and contrasting in speech therapy.

For students to be able to successfully compare and contrast, they need to be able to comprehend what they read, understand the vocabulary, know how to express it, and know how to put it all together. All of these things fall into our domains as SLPs.

How can you help your students master this skill? Tune in to hear my favorite teaching methods, tools, and strategies to help my students understand how to compare and contrast with pictures or video, between a story and background knowledge, and between two different articles.

Creating Relevant Goals from Standardized Test Results27 May 202400:20:33

Hey there, SLPs! Today, we're going to delve deep into the realm of therapy goals and standardized testing now. Standardized testing is a necessary component of the process, let's face it, but that doesn't mean our treatment objectives have to follow their lead. We're going to reveal how to use those test results to inform relevant, doable objectives. Let's face it, meaningful goals result in actual advancement! Hallie shared advice on deciphering test results, getting input from teachers, carrying out impromptu evaluations, and retaining all the knowledge from in-class observations. Consider it an SLP-style recipe for success!

Here’s what we learned:

  • Therapy goals should prioritize long-term communication skills over test scores, tailored to individual needs.
  • Goals must be SMART, aligning with real-life needs, not just test scores.
  • Prioritize goals that enhance problem-solving, narrative skills, and social communication.
  • Recognizing differences across areas and cultural influences aids in understanding student needs holistically.
  • Use tools like the Baseline Tool and Critical Thinking Probes to uncover student strengths, weaknesses, and comprehension

99: Why I Avoid Vocabulary Lists20 Dec 202100:10:19

How do we decide what vocabulary words to work on in speech therapy?

This is probably the number one question I see asked in SLP Facebook groups, so I wanted to take some time to explain why I don’t rely on vocabulary lists, grade level lists, or classroom curriculum, and explain what I use instead.

The truth is that vocabulary lists and grade level lists aren’t perfect. They don’t account for where each individual student might be in the vocabulary learning process.

Instead, we need to focus on teaching our students how to determine the meaning of words they come across on their own, without relying on basic vocabulary memorization.

Make sure to tune in to hear my strategy for helping students grasp those tier 2 vocabulary words and why you should consider using them in your speech therapy practice too.
