How to give your opinion in English, and how to agree and disagree politely. Explained slowly and simply for beginners.
Welcome back to Slow English Daily, the English learning podcast for people who can read English but freeze when somebody speaks it. In this episode your host Robin covers discussion English and conversation skills.
Many learners have plenty of opinions, but only in their head. Somebody asks "what do you think?" and the answer is "yes, it's good" or "I don't know." Not because there is no opinion, but because there are no small words to start the sentence. And slowly, people stop asking. This episode gives you those small words.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE
How to start an opinion. I think, in my opinion, personally, to be honest, and why a small opening gives your brain the two seconds it needs.
How to add a reason. One opinion, one "because", and why one clear reason is stronger than three weak ones. Plus how to add an example with "for example" and "like when".
How to agree warmly. Exactly, I totally agree, that's so true, that's exactly what I was thinking, and the "agree, then add" technique that turns agreement into participation.
How to disagree politely. Why a direct "no, you're wrong" can sound aggressive in English, and the cushion phrases that fix it: I see what you mean, but... That's a good point, but... I'm not so sure about that. Plus the hidden meaning of "hmm, I don't know".
Strong opinions and no opinion. I completely disagree, I strongly believe, and when to save them. Plus what to say when you really don't know: I've never really thought about it, I can see both sides, what do you think?
Sensitive topics. Politics, religion and money, and how to discuss them respectfully.
Joining a group conversation. The hardest situation for any learner. Can I just say something? Sorry, just quickly. Going back to what Sarah said. And how to handle interruptions: sorry, can I just finish?
