| 278 - REWIND - Endometriosis, IVF, and She Experienced with Sherelle Gilbert | 02 Nov 2022 | 00:46:08 | |
Have you heard of the term hydrosalpinx? Hydrosalpinx is the blockage of a woman's fallopian tube caused by a fluid buildup and dilation of the tube at its end. Most often it occurs at the fimbrial end of the tube next to the ovary, but it can also occur at the other end of the tube that attaches to the uterus. Today's guest was diagnosed with infertility after trying to conceive for a year. She underwent surgery for hydrosalpinx and possible endometriosis which resulted in removal of both her fallopian tubes due to damage caused by endometriosis. Sherelle Gilbert was faced with IVF being her only option for conceiving. She went through her first round of IVF that resulted in one normal PGS tested embryo. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic cancellations delayed the transfer of her embryo. Sherelle had a successful transfer and was excited, until she experienced a miscarriage at 7 weeks. In this episode, Sherelle takes us back on her journey through endometriosis, IVF and the costs, and her preparing for another round of IVF in hopes of bringing home her miracle. | 277 - Why your VOTE Matters in Black Maternal Health?! | 26 Oct 2022 | 00:23:44
You are listening to a special episode of the Sisters in Loss Podcast. As many of my US listeners know we are less than two weeks away from, November 8, 2022 which is Election Day and Midterm elections, and we have the power to change and shift the paradigm of maternal and infant mortality in America with our vote. In today's episode, a rewind episode, I sit down with March of Dimes President Stacey D. Stewart to discuss their Blanket Change Campaign l, and why our vote matters in this election, why the maternal death rate is getting worse as technology advances, and how working together with March of Dimes gives all new moms a better chance to be there for their babies. Stacey D. Stewart joined March of Dimes as its fifth President on January 1, 2017, and first African American President. In this role, Stewart heads the organization leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies. She is responsible for all aspects of the organization's strategy, vision and operations. The maternal death rate in America has doubled in just twenty five years, and it's only getting worse. More than 700 moms died due to pregnancy-related causes this year alone, making the United States the most dangerous developed nation to have a newborn baby. Women of color are most at risk of facing life-threatening complications, and black women are three times as likely as white women to die from pregnancy-related causes. Working together for #BlanketChange, we can give all new moms a better chance to be there for their babies. | 276 - Are you listening to Black Women in Maternal Health? | 19 Oct 2022 | 00:28:58
According to the most recent data, Black infants are 2.3 times more likely to die before their first birthday compared to their White counterparts. Black American parents also experience higher rates of fetal and perinatal deaths, making Black families disproportionately more susceptible to pregnancy loss und bereavement. Bereaved Black parents' ability and ways of coping with their loss is influenced by a multitude of factors such as the transgenerational trauma associated with 400 years of collective enslavement, poverty, and consistent discrimination in the educational, judicial, and health care system. Black American parents encounter specific barriers to receiving quality health care such as higher levels of medical mistrust, perceived discrimination, and poorer communication with their providers. However, little is known about Black parents' perception about the impact of patient-provider relationships on their perinatal outcomes and bereavement journeys. This study aims to explore Black American mothers' experiences of pregnancy, loss, and bereavement in relation to the health care system and their health care providers. This is Erica's original research from her Master's program in Maternal Child Health. Listen as she presents her thesis "Are you listening to me? | 267- REWIND- Myomectomy, Transabdominal Cerclage, and Faith after Loss with Dr. Shabnam Brady | 17 Aug 2022 | 00:55:39
ave you heard of a Myomectomy procedure? Myomectomy is a surgical procedure to remove uterine fibroids. These common noncancerous growths appear in the uterus. Uterine fibroids usually develop during childbearing years, but they can occur at any age. Women of Color have the highest occurrence of fibroids in up to 90% of black women before age of 50. Today's guest experienced an untimely loss at 22 weeks of baby girl Alexandria Shah due to preterm labor and cervical insufficiency. Dr. Shabnam Brady began to research for answers why and what could possibly have happened. She went to several specialist doctors and conducted months of research. She and her husband decided to undergo a myomectomy to remove fibroids and went to Chicago to undergo a Transabdominal Cerclage procedure due to her cervical insufficiency. Imagine birthing your rainbow baby and losing your first born on the same day!? Today's episode is one that hits close to home as her story is very similar to my own. I would be lying to you if I didn't say I cried throughout this entire interview and hours afterward. This episode is a trigger, so please grab some tissue, and brace yourself as you embark on this woman's journey to motherhood. Shana Anderson experienced a placenta abruption with her first born son Bryce, and he was later diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy and chronic lung disease. In June 2020, Shana gave birth to her rainbow baby boy Brayden, and later that evening her son Bryce passed away. In this episode, Shana is raw as it is weeks after laying her son Bryce to rest. She takes us back to the day of great joy and deep sorrow of birthing a son and losing a son. Shana is taking it one day at a time and literally spoke life over herself, her womb, and baby Brayden as he was growing in her belly while taking care of a medically fragile toddler. | 260 - Loss and Overcoming Grief moving towards Healing with Turia West | 29 Jun 2022 | 00:43:05
Do you know what TFMR or Termination for Medical Reasons is?
Termination for Medical Reasons, or TFMR, is when a pregnancy is terminated due to a chromosomal, genetic or structural fetal abnormality, or where continuing the pregnancy would risk the health or life of the mother.
Today's guest experienced 14 losses. Yes, this isn't a typo. Turia West is a wife and mom and is still on the journey of healing from grief and profound loss. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl in 2008 and then went onto have a 16 week twin loss in 2013. This twin loss revealed the balanced chromosome translocation. This means that a piece of one chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome. Sections of 2 chromosomes hence switched places. Turia has this same translocation and learned that this could potenitally lead to miscarriage up to 50%. Turia continue to try to grow her family and suffered more losses and miscarriages along the way.
In today's episode, Turia shares her journey through IVF, getting an amniocentesis to confirm unbalanced chromosome translocation and being offered to Terminate for Medical Reasons (TFMR), but her and her husband decided against it.
This episode is for you to listen to if you have experienced profound losses, TFMR, IVF, or want to learn how to overcome profound grief and loss and work towards your healing.

| 377 - This Year Don't Struggle in Silence - REWIND | 01 Jan 2025 | 00:29:01 | |
We have entered into a new year, and a new decade. Another opportunity to live out our purpose for our lives, for our angel babies, and future babies. It is a time to continue on the journey to healing, restoration, with hope and peace. In today's episode I share my word of the year and a recap of all that was accomplished with Sisters in Loss in 2019 and my goals for 2020 for the podcast and business. Resilience means
Resilience means knowing how to cope in spite of setbacks, or barriers, or limited resources. Resilience is a measure of how much you want something and how much you are willing, and able, to overcome obstacles to get it. It has to do with your emotional strength. After losing babies many times we don't even know our own strength. But we keep on getting up, placing our feet on the floor, and pressing on time after time when it gets tough. We go two steps forward and 3 steps back. We move from trauma to trauma and not realize it until its too late. We get the positive pregnancy test we had been praying for only to get bad news weeks later. We make it the end of our pregnancy, birth our rainbow baby, and are depressed because we continue to mourn the baby we lost. When I think of resiliency I think of you. Yes, you girl. Yes, you my Sister in Loss. You continue to press on, recover quickly, and have the emotional strength to overcome life's obstacles and challenges. You have made it your mission to help others on this journey. You have dedicated your life back to Jesus to serving him until your husband and future children get here. Resilience is you! Resilience is me!
