433 - Bereaved Mother's Day - You are a Mother!29 Apr 202600:17:20

To the mother with empty arms this weekend: We see you. Your motherhood is real. Your love is valid. And your title is forever. 🕊️🤎

Sunday is Bereaved Mother's Day—a sacred, often quiet space carved out before the noise of traditional Mother's Day begins. It's a day that acknowledges the mothers whose babies are held in their hearts instead of their hands.

In this week's special episode of the Sisters in Loss podcast, we are holding space for the heaviness of this upcoming weekend. We're talking about:
✨ Why you don't have to be "strong" right now.
✨ The radical, necessary act of resting through your grief.
✨ How to use the "Power of the Pause" to protect your peace when the world feels too loud.

If you are dreading the days ahead, this episode is your permission slip to unplug, set boundaries, and simply survive it. You do not have to navigate this alone.

If you missed our powerful Black Maternal Health Week live event, we've brought the entire conversation straight to the podcast! 🎙️

In this episode, I sit down with a dream team of world-changers to discuss the realities of systemic failure, the invisible weight of maternal mental health, and the radical act of finding healing in community.

Prepare to take notes as these powerhouses drop absolute gems: ✨ Shivonne Odom-Chase (@akomacounseling) breaks down why Black mothers are so often misdiagnosed and how to fiercely protect our mental peace. ✨ Jaye Wilson (@melianatedmoms) shares what it really looks like when a community steps up to support a grieving family beyond the initial condolences. ✨ Vanessa Hanible (@doula.vanessa) takes us inside the delivery room to show how doulas bridge the trust gap and act as shields for Black birthing people.

We are answering the hard questions: What does safe care look like? How do we hold both profound grief and unexpected joy? And what does the future of maternal health actually need to look like?

313 - Loss and Overcoming Grief moving towards Healing with Turia West - REWIND09 Aug 202300:44:25

Do you know what TFMR or Termination for Medical Reasons is?

Termination for Medical Reasons, or TFMR, is when a pregnancy is terminated due to a chromosomal, genetic or structural fetal abnormality, or where continuing the pregnancy would risk the health or life of the mother.

Today's guest experienced 14 losses.  Yes, this isn't a typo.  Turia West is a wife and mom and is still on the journey of healing from grief and profound loss.  She gave birth to a healthy baby girl in 2008 and then went onto have a 16 week twin loss in 2013.  This twin loss revealed the balanced chromosome translocation.  This means that a piece of one chromosome breaks off and attaches to another chromosome. Sections of 2 chromosomes hence switched places.  Turia has this same translocation and learned that this could potenitally lead to miscarriage up to 50%.  Turia continue to try to grow her family and suffered more losses and miscarriages along the way.

In today's episode, Turia shares her journey through IVF, getting an amniocentesis to confirm unbalanced chromosome translocation and being offered to Terminate for Medical Reasons (TFMR), but her and her husband decided against it.

This episode is for you to listen to if you have experienced profound losses, TFMR, IVF, or want to learn how to overcome profound grief and loss and work towards your healing.

304 - Endometriosis, low AMH, Placenta Previa, and Filling Empty Wombs with Sandra Elidor - REWIND07 Jun 202300:42:01

What Does Having Low AMH Levels Mean?

Having low AMH levels can indicate that your ovaries are producing less of the preantral follicles. This is important as the fewer the number of follicles there are means there are less that can be stimulated for assisted contraception.

Sandra Elidor also found out she had low AMH at age 30.  With Endo she had two surgeries, 1 fallopian tube, 1 successful IVF cycle, and 1 miscarriage. Sandra gave birth to her son at 29 weeks after weeks of bed rest due to placenta previa.  During her 2nd IVF treatment, she found out she was no longer a candidate for IVF due to her low AMH levels.  After which she suffered a miscarriage.

In today's episode Sandra takes us on her journey to parenting, how she started her non-profit Filling Empty Wombs on Clubhouse, and supporting other families on this infertility and loss journey.

279 - Becoming a Mom after Miscarriage and Infertility with Colleen Turner McGregor16 Nov 202200:43:30

A miscarriage is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a couple. You grieve and become fearful. Fearful that parts of history may repeat itself, the part where you lose your baby at 3 months old so you decide to not try again for another child. Yes, that part! But then, by God's grace, you somehow got over your fears and are ready to try again. You tried and nothing happened, you keep trying, and still nothing. You decided to check with your doctor or even get a new doctor to find out what is happening. And then, out of nowhere, you get smacked with a curveball. That curveball for many women is the awful diagnosis of Infertility.

In today's episode, Colleen Turner McGregor takes us on her journey to motherhood with an infertility diagnosis and miscarriage and child loss.  She details her journey in her book Becoming a Mom: A 14 Day Journey of Faith through Infertility and Miscarriage.  We discuss grief, the fear of getting pregnant again, and battling infertility while having faith in God that everything will be alright.

278 - REWIND - Endometriosis, IVF, and She Experienced with Sherelle Gilbert02 Nov 202200:46:08

Have you heard of the term hydrosalpinx?

Hydrosalpinx is the blockage of a woman's fallopian tube caused by a fluid buildup and dilation of the tube at its end. Most often it occurs at the fimbrial end of the tube next to the ovary, but it can also occur at the other end of the tube that attaches to the uterus.

Today's guest was diagnosed with infertility after trying to conceive for a year.  She underwent surgery for hydrosalpinx and possible endometriosis which resulted in removal of both her fallopian tubes due to damage caused by endometriosis.  Sherelle Gilbert was faced with IVF being her only option for conceiving.  She went through her first round of IVF that resulted in one normal PGS tested embryo.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic cancellations delayed the transfer of her embryo.  Sherelle had a successful transfer and was excited, until she experienced a miscarriage at 7 weeks.  In this episode, Sherelle takes us back on her journey through endometriosis, IVF and the costs, and her preparing for another round of IVF in hopes of bringing home her miracle.

This episode is a rewind episode for you to listen to if you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, experienced IVF loss, or have had blocked fallopian tubes.
