Just 3 ASMW fans getting together for a chat. Coming off the heels of the ASMW Advent and the series of shorts, we all took a little break from whiskey stuff. We're coming back with a little therapy sesh. Join us for a few laughs and some trash talking!

This week on Thursday, February 27th at 4pm PST / 7pm EST, we interview William and Charlie with Oak & Grist. O&G is a relatively lesser known American Single Malt Whiskey distillery in North Carolina.

Oak & Grist's whiskey leans toward the "scotch-y" side of American Single Malt and would blend in well among Speysides. Lost Lantern featured an Oak & Grist single cask in their Discovery Club in 2025, which we definitely used as a reference and research for this episode. My first taste of O&G was casually offered to me by a collaborator, Oak & Grist finished in a Rum Cask, offered up as a nice comparison with our Rum Cask McCarthy's pick, "another Rum Cask ASMW."

Across samples of 5 different Oak & Grist products I've tasted over the past year and a half, I've never not been impressed.

All of O&G's whiskeys are Non-Chill-Filtered and No Color Added. We love to see it.

Blind Sample Showdown Season 3 Round 1 was scheduled Doug (DemiTastes) against Sevdet Alus but ended in a bye because Sevdet couldn't locate his samples. We run the show anyway to get a individual point score for Doug for Round 1. In this match, effectively Doug vs Jerm's randomizer, Doug got a very close guess but also at least one surprise upset.

Our interview today is Tyler Pederson, Master Distiller of Westland Distilling. What you're about to see is an unreleased interview from the archives. This was originally recorded January 12th, 2024, when we were still hoping that a release of our Holiday Special in January 2024 made any kind of sense. We've since re-recorded Tyler's segment for the Holiday Special, but the original recording ended up being less on-theme and more just a generally good interview, so we decided to prep that for release as a standalone podcast episode, which is what you're about to see today.

Some of the information in this interview may be slightly out of date as it was recorded almost 2 years ago. This was recorded shortly after Tyler Pederson was named Master Distiller of Westland Distillery and this was actually the 2nd time I'd sat down to interview Tyler Pederson since he landed that title. The first was an unreleased audio-only in-person interview in 2023 mostly aimed at book research, and which resulted in an article on my blog, linked below. Westland is one of those odd cases where I've been in the loop with the distillery for a long time but for one reason or another I haven't released any podcast content with them until recently - but we're fixing that this season!

On Black Friday, Black Frost released their brand new American Single Malt Whiskey, which, like all their whiskeys, is made from all-Minnesota ingredients, including grains from the family farm, Minnesota-grown oak, and wild fermentation, for a true sense of place and northern terroir. Tonight we're deep diving on this 3-year old distillery and their new ASMW, with a stop along the way to talk about their prior releases of a Bourbon and a Rye. Phill and Doug got the bottle of Black Frost ASMW a little early to share around at Thanksgiving. We and are families and friends were impressed and itching to learn more.

We did a walkthrough of some of the offerings of the new Lost Lantern release Scotch Lovers Collection Lets just say it was AMAZING.

Lost Lantern's newest major release is the "Scotch Lovers' Collection" for Fall 2025, which focuses entirely on American single malts designed to appeal to fans of traditional Scotch whisky profiles. The collection was released on November 12, 2025.

In addition to the main collection, the November 2025 Discovery Club release is a unique pot-still whiskey from Painted Stave Distilling in Delaware.

Streaming tonight, Friday 8/8 at 5pm PDT: Interview with Amanda Swift, co-founder, co-owner, distiller of Swift Distillery. (This interview was pre-recorded.)

Bucking the trend of heavy, oaky, and funky Texas whiskey, Swift Distillery is making surprisingly light and refreshing American Single Malt Whiskey out in Texas Hill Country, just southwest of Austin. They aim for a fruity, highland whiskey style and absolutely nail it. Pay no mind to the age -- while the whiskey is indeed young in years, coming in between 1 and 2 years old, it is anything but youthful in flavor.

In this interview, Amanda explains all about how the right choices in production and quality of materials and casks truly result in age being just a number. Swift completely delivers on their vision for their whiskey. The Swift Sauternes cask finished has quickly become my go-to highball single malt. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself! :)

Our guest today is Becky Harris, President and Master Distiller of Catoctin Creek. (This interview was pre-recorded.)

Phill and I have been talking about inviting Becky on the show since pretty much the beginning of this podcast. I first met Becky at the ACSA 2024 Conference in Denver and floated the idea of coming on our show, but we never got around to scheduling it. I ran into her again at ACSA 2025 just after I'd seen a label released talking about a new ASMW from Catoctin Creek called Finch & Hawk, and that gave me a solid reason to invite Becky onto the show.

Catoctin Creek is renowned for top-tier craft rye whiskey, among other products, and Becky is well known within the craft spirits industry for her leadership. She has served on the board of the American Craft Spirits Association for numerous years, including as the first woman president of the ACSA. Becky brings her chemical engineering background to the production of fine and richly characterful craft whiskey of all kinds, bringing both an analytical viewpoint and also an appreciation for the subtlety of the subjective whiskey drinker's experience.

River Roots Barrel Company, founded by a team including Iron Chef Michael Symon, provides a bespoke barrel pick program for private whiskey clubs. This whiskey is, at once, very good, slightly shrouded in mystery, and compelling in terms of the story of flavor that it tells.

Due to the flu, Phill had to miss our live interview in Ep 36 on Jan 30, 2025 (link below). So today, we're following up with a tasting of the samples that Phill hasn't gotten a chance yet to taste on air.

For today's conversation, we'll be tasting the seven (7) samples River Roots has provided us. We get to explore the influence of type of cask (toast level, char level) with all else equal on 2 different malt/rye-malt mashbills. Details in the additional show notes. This isolated impact of barrel type is a fascinating exploration that we don't get to talk about very often so we'll be discussing that today.

Distillerie Acadian hold the distinction of holding the first official American Single Malt Whiskey label for their Bon Vale ASMW. They were the first to file a COLA label approval with the newly ratified ASMW designation (effective January 2025).

We'll also talk about how even great quality craft whiskey products don't necessarily survive due to interest in the target (local) market for small distilleries like Distillerie Acadian.

Join us today for an update from Murphy Quint, Master Distiller of Cedar Ridge, including the QuintEssential American Single Malt Series.

Murph last appeared on Single Malt Frontier for Ep. 07, where he officially introduced himself as Master Distiller for the first time. In the year and a half since then, Murph and I have met in person twice at ACSA 2024 and ACSA 2025 and I've gotten to watch Murph's reactions as his QuintEssential American Single Malt Whiskeys won high awards in the ACSA spirits judging competitions each year.

Last time Murph was on the show, we tasted the standard solera blend QuintEssential, the special release QuintEssential Portside, and the Quintessential Tokaji Cask Finished. We make mention of those same whiskeys today as we explore several new QuintEssential expressions that have released since last time.

This time we'll discuss the QuintEssential Wine Club First Meeting, the QuintEssential Untitled Cigar Malt Project, and QuintEssential Number Five, which releases this week, and we get into how the expressions we discussed previously relate to these more recent releases.

Funnily enough, Ep 07 was among the top interviews we've had on this show (in terms of the words), and yet was among the worst technical productions of this podcast ever, for various reasons. Today we right those wrongs with a show that is both the best of Single Malt Frontier both technically and from an interview pacing perspective. Enjoy!

It has been fascinating and enthralling to watch Erin Lee's career in the spirits industry so far. Beginning from her background as a fashion designer and tea sommelier, Erin discovered the Step Up internship via the Good Deeds Batch 1 Blend of American Single Malts, and joined the Step Up internship. I met Erin originally on Instagram and then in person during the 2024 ACSA Conference in Denver, the week she graduated from the Step Up internship program.

Since then, FEW was acquired by Heaven Hill and Sydney Jones (whom we spoke with last year on Episode 14 https://www.youtube.com/live/rTDaYaRGOw4) moved from FEW to Heaven Hill, and Erin moved into the position of Head Distiller of FEW Spirits, within a year of her graduation from Step Up. Erin has developed products using her keen sense of whiskey blending and her wine background, including the Smashing Pumpkins collaboration featuring FEW's Bourbon proofed down with an infusion of Madame Zuzu's Midnight Rose Tea. And bringing it full circle, Erin was part of the all-women blending team of Good Deeds Batch 2 blend of bourbon and rye.

Welcome back to the May edition of 3 Guys 1Grain, yup we know, its late. Coming off the heels of our barrel picks with Distillerie Acadian, we sat and chatted a little about our lives. Sure, there is some ASM talk, but it's a bit less than usual. We do touch on a bit of news in the industry and some changes. A bit about an interesting ASM from the east coast with an incredible age statement, and what's next for 3 Guys 1 Grain.

Join us Thursday, January 30th, at 5pm PST, as we talk with Ryan Lintz, founder and CEO of River Roots Barrel Company.

River Roots Barrel Company, founded by a team including Iron Chef Michael Symon, provides a bespoke barrel pick program for private whiskey clubs. This whiskey is, at once, very good, slightly shrouded in mystery, and compelling in terms of the story of flavor that it tells.

For today's conversation, River Roots provided us with samples of three ASMW products which are about the same in specs except for the toast and char level of the barrels, and previously gave us samples to taste of 4 distinct barrels of whiskey distilled from a mixed mashbill of malted rye and malted barley, again at different toast and char levels. This isolated impact of barrel type is a fascinating exploration that we don't get to talk about very often so we'll be discussing that today.

We're going to talk about how River Roots has added value to consumers over other brands when acting as a Non-Distilling Producer (NDP); what the sourcing process has looked like that enables them to tell their story their way, offering the best flavors in alignment with their founding culinary flavor-oriented philosophy; what it's been like working as one of the first NDPs dealing with ASMW and non-traditional mashbills as a major portion of their offerings; the effect of different barrel toast and char levels on the flavor of whiskey which is otherwise identical; and maybe more.

Trillium Brewing has started production on an American Single Malt Whiskey!

In April 2024, Trillium Brewing, makers of delicious craft beer, launched a line of spirits under the Trillium Distilling Co. name. Around October 2024, the distillery made me aware that they were starting production on an American Single Malt Whiskey. Naturally, as a fan of their beer, and a fan of Craft American Single Malt Whiskey, I had to invite them on for an interview.

This week, we welcome back Amanda Beckwith from Virginia Distillery Co. With the recent release of a series of great valued American Single Malt Whiskeys in the VDC line, we absolutely had to bring this powerhouse of Virginia Single Malt Whiskey. We always love having repeat guests, and it's especially fun when they have a ton of new products to talk about!

Since Amanda Beckwith's previous appearance on the show just 7 months ago, Virginia Distillery Co. has released no fewer than 4 new products. First we had the VDC series of cask-finished whiskeys (Cider, Chardonnay, and Port). And just last week, VDC released yet another addition to the VDC lineup: Blue Ridge. Aged in ex-bourbon, and finished in Virgin Toasted Oak from VA's Blue Ridge mountains, and coming in at a shockingly value-friendly $45, suffice to say we can't wait to try it live, and talk about all the latest from VDC. Our McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt Whiskey barrel pick is finally in bottles! This video has all the details about the pick, tasting notes, and a brief history of McCarthy's Oregon Single Malt with Master Distiller Caitlin Bartlemay.

Last week, you heard from the community voices who love and support ASMW. This week, join us for an interview with the President of the American Single Malt Whiskey Commission (ASMWC) himself. We'll hear from the man spearheading the organization of ASMW distillers and discuss the state of the ASMW rules, the commercial development of the category, the growing variety and interest in the category, and talk about the dangers of the industry continuing along without a formal regulation for or protection of the term "American Single Malt".

It's been over 2 years since TTB published their proposal for American Single Malt Whiskey (ASMW) [1]. Since the comment period ended 2 months later, they've assured producers and consumers of ASMW that finalizing and ratifying these rules is a top priority for them, but with such a long delay, we need to do a bit of a media push and put a little pressure on them.
