Episode 108 - Success in Spain10 Apr 202100:49:26
Manchester United defeated Granada 2-0 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie in Spain on Thursday to put themselves in pole position for a place in the last four. Marcus Rashford raced on to a long ball by Victor Lindelof to fire United in front. Bruno Fernandes converted a late penalty after he was caught off the ball by Yan Eteki, leaving him with a bruised eye, but the Portuguese midfielder's spot-kick went through the hands of Rui Silva. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without the suspended trio of captain Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay for the second leg at Old Trafford next week. Assessing the performances at Los Carmenes, Dale and Mike provide their thoughts on Granada v Manchester United. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Episode 106 - FA Cup nightmare ahead of international break22 Mar 202100:56:43
Welcome to another Strettycast, the Manchester United podcast, with myself and Mike.   In this episode, we question Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection against Leicester City after United crashed out of the FA Cup.   The goals were conceded were abysmal (Dean Henderson wasn’t at fault for any of them) and questions are also asked of our defense and midfield.   There was no key influence on the pitch for United yesterday. The system failed against a tactically fluid Leicester side that were underestimated from the start. It was worth remembering ahead of kick-off that this is a team one point behind United in the league.   You can subscribe to the Strettycast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and aCast.   If you’re a fan of the show, please leave us a rating/review on Apple Podcasts. Episode 105 - Pogba back with a bang19 Mar 202100:52:10
Strettycast episode 105 - Dale and Mike react to an important win against AC Milan at the San Siro. This episode was record before the draw took place for the quarter-finals, so we'll discuss that on Monday morning. Paul Pogba took the headlines after coming on as a half-time substitute, only to score the match-winner minutes later. He was superb in the middle and gave United a new lease of life. Having him back fit will be a huge bonus and our fingers are firmly crossed with hope he avoids injury or illness while away with the French squad next week. The lads are confident about going all the way in the Europa League this season after beating AC Milan, who after United were probably the best side left in the competition before we knocked them out. A big thank you to everyone to tuned in live on Friday morning for the Strettycast LIVE. Episode 104 - The David Moyes Derby15 Mar 202100:55:59
I don't think anyone calls it the David Moyes derby but we do. Manchester United got over the line against West Ham who came to Old Trafford to defend. The visitors sat back and welcomed pressure. It didn't work and as soon as they conceded an own goal they began to attack the Reds in numbers. West Ham deserved to lose the game given how they approached it from the start. It was dull and exactly what you'd expect of 90 minutes of football with Moyes. It was arguably one of Harry Maguire's best performances in the shirt despite Luke Shaw being rewarded as MOTM. Mason Greenwood didn't score but did everything else you would expect from a centre-forward. This is the start of a tricky week for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Will be answer the next round of questions coming his way? United have two cup games before the international break and the Norwegian needs to win a trophy. Some stats Moyes still only has 7 wins at Old Trafford in his whole career, including wins as Manchester United manager. Moyes carries on his proud tradition of having never won as a visiting manager to Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal - 19 years as a PL manager Watch the latest episode of the Strettycast on Stretty News TV Hosted on Acast. Episode 103 - Costly error for Henderson12 Mar 202101:00:18
Manchester United are going about their Round of 16 Europa League tie the hard way after conceding late into stoppage time against AC Milan on Thursday night. Dale and Mike are here to dissect a dull night for Ole’s Reds on the 103rd episode of the Strettycast. We discuss AC Milan’s fall from grace and current rise to prominence – quite similar in terms of on-pitch results at Old Trafford post-Ferguson – as we agree that they’re one of the biggest clubs in the world going through a transition. I highly doubt our listens will be comforted by the news of Avram Glazer’s latest business move. It gets a little heated on the podcast over Donny van de Beek. Episode 101 - Update on United's search for a director of football20 Feb 202100:14:29
Manchester United have identified Juventus’ chief scout Matteo Tognozzi as a possible candidate to become the club’s sporting director, according to Stretty News reporter Leah Smith. Tognozzi became Juventus’ chief scout in 2017 following successful recruitment roles at Zenit St.Petersburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg. The highly-rated scout is regarded as one of Europe’s most pioneering recruitment specialists. Dale catches up with Leah for a quick chat about her story, the meaning behind out and to settle some inaccuracies surfacing on social media and one particular fan channel. A director of football has long been on the agenda for Manchester United. Will the situation at the club change with an appointment? Dale stresses his fears about the Glazer ownership again and doesn't think Tognozzi, should he be appointed, will have much leg room to do his job as he'd like to. We also dive into conversation about European football with Europa League very much on the agenda for United this season, as well as a brief snippet on the non-existent Premier League title race that the media want to ask Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about every week. Episode 99 - Uninspiring trip to West Bom15 Feb 202100:38:36
Mike is busy this week and will return on Friday, so Dale was joined by Stretty News writer Philip. They discussed United being complacent against another side in the lower half of the Premier League table. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dismissed claims there's an attitude problem in the dressing room, but how else can we explain such complacency. These players are better than this and not long ago they were on a winning run that saw them at the top of the league. Solskjaer needs to get back to winning football matches again. Bruno Fernandes needs to start performing again. Marcus Rashford and needs to start scoring again. Mason Greenwood needs a run in the team. So, another disappointing result for the Red Devils. 197: Scenes at Wembley, consecutive FA Cup finals & Bruno stuns Blades26 Apr 202401:20:59
Dale and Brian review a chaotic FA Cup semi-final at Wembley which went to penalties before Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League. You would be mistaken if you thought these results would bring positivity to United because the media has been too busy tearing strips out of Erik ten Hag. The lads have their say on that and more. Episode 98 - Into the FA Cup quarter-finals!10 Feb 202100:44:11
Dale and Mike reflect on a pretty dull FA Cup fifth-round win over West Ham. An extra-time winner from Scott McTominay saved the night for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. Episode 96 - United put NINE past Southampton03 Feb 202100:38:01
Manchester United win 9-0. Eight different scorers against Southampton: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, own goal, Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial x2, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes, Daniel James. Biggest win since 1995 - though that game against Ipswich didn't have VAR making crazy decisions. The Reds are level on 44 points with rivals Man City, who have two games in hand as we record this podcast. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needed to see a convincing display from his players and he got one. After shining amongst the Class of 92 and being tipped to become a regular in Sir Alex Ferguson's side, Thornley suffered a devastating injury against Blackburn Rovers. This episode of the Strettycast is a reaction to Manchester United's goalless stalemate with Arsenal at the Emirates. The mood has worsened between Dale and Mike because the knock-on effect of drawing with Arsenal feels worse. Episiode 92 - Knocking the Scousers out of the FA Cup25 Jan 202100:46:59
Manchester United went toe-to-toe with Liverpool at Anfield, stuck the sword in and rode victorious into the fifth-round of the FA Cup. Dale is joined by Mike to run through the game and Jermain Jenas' shocking co-commentary on BBC One. Manchester United won 3-2 on the day and knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup. Goals from Mason Greenwood, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes sealed the win. Mohamed Salah scored twice for the Scousers. Jurgen Klopp's men were lucky not to have had two players sent off but remember it's only United who get favoured treatment from match officials. Episode 91 - Top of the league going to Anfield (special guest Ste from EOTK)13 Jan 202100:45:29
Dale and Mike give a quick review of Manchester United's 1-0 win over Burnley. The win saw Manchester United move three points clear at the top of the Premier League. Liverpool, who are sat in second place, are our opponents this weekend so we had Ste Carson (@sjrcarson) -- a leading writer from Empire of the Kop (LFC blog) -- join us to chat about their season to date and being champions after a 30-year wait. Dale and Mike reflect on Manchester United's 1-0 win over Watford in the FA Cup. The Reds' attention will turn to the FA Cup draw on Monday night (8pm) but for now, kick your feet up and listen to the lads discuss a pretty dull 90 minutes of football. A "professional" display argues Dale, while Mike argues there's a need for a new right-back to compete with Aaron Wan-Bissaka after Brandon Williams got the nod on Saturday night. Most weeks Dale is joined by close friend Mike, and other weeks there will be guests and special interviews. 196: Defensive mishaps, social media slip-ups & Steve Bruce wearing a mankini15 Apr 202401:07:13
Dale and Brian dwell on Manchester United's 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, the added drama that came from social media after the game and dressing room bickering. United were lucky to escape with a point from the Vitality Stadium on Sunday and the result means our Champions League hopes are barely hanging by a thread. That result only puts more pressure on Erik ten Hag, so the lads question whether the writing is on the wall for United's manager. The lads also look forward to a trip to Wembley this weekend where United take on Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final. Manchester United finish 2020 in second place behind leaders Liverpool. The quest for the New Year will be to build on that and challenge for the Premier League title. It's too early to speak about us winning the league, but it's great to see United back in the mix again. Episode 87 - Where are Manchester United under Solskjaer right now? [Christmas special]23 Dec 202000:35:45
Dale and Mike catch up after the 6-2 win over Leeds United. We look forward to tonight's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Everton, and the next Premier League match versus Leicester City on Boxing Day. The league looks promising as it stands but this is where we urge the team to show consistency -- but an away trip to Leicester won't be an easy contest. The Reds were excellent against Leeds but defensive mishaps reappear on a weekly basis. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must raise this with the board and try to sort something out in the January transfer window. The lads agree that Solskjaer needs to win a trophy this season, but we look at where United are after two years under the Norwegian. We've plenty of reasons to be happy this Christmas. Or are we talking too soon about a side that has dropped due to inconsistency so many times in recent history? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Episode 86 - Paul Pogba is the Boris Johnson of Manchester United, time for Ronaldo to come home?16 Dec 202001:02:25
Manchester United are out of the Champions League, but could find themselves in the Premier League title race. With two games in hand on some of the teams above us (United are ninth), Dale and Mike have another discussion on all things United related. We couldn't skip the latest episode surrounding Paul Pogba, which Mike uses to compare the Frenchman to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The lads give their thoughts on Pogba's agent Mino Raiola and how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is handling the situation. Episode 85 - El Matador01 Dec 202000:47:37
The Reds recovered from two goals down to record a stunning win at St. Mary's on Sunday. Southampton took a 2-0 lead into half-time but an injury time winner from Edinson Cavani made the headlines. 'El Matador' came off the bench in the second half to assist Bruno Fernandes with a brilliant delivery into the box before scoring two goals of his own in a match-winning performance. Mike's changed his tune on Cavani while Dale continues to push his Ole agenda, which is probably becoming a bromance at this stage. Episode 84 - The Guardian's Jamie Jackson on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer25 Nov 202000:35:53
Dale catches up with author and Guardian journalist Jamie Jackson to discuss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.  After writing The Red Apprentice, a biography on Solskjaer, Jackson appears as a special guest on The Strettycast to offer some insight on how the Norwegian operates as Manchester United manager. We also take a look at the most recent transfer window as Jackson reveals Liverpool are interested in a player United wanted to sign last summer... Moreover, this intriguing conversation will give you a taste of Solskjaer and what his version of the hairdryer treatment is really like. Some people think Solskjaer is too soft in his approach -- a pushover almost -- but in this episode of the Strettycast we learn that is not the case behind the scenes, Jackson’s new book goes into terrific detail about Solskjaer’s upbringing, bursting onto the scene in Norway and how his move to Manchester United came about. It can be picked up now via Amazon. P.S The Guardian journalist claims Manchester United have no intentions of sacking Solskjaer and, on top of that, Jackson doesn’t believe the club has been in contact with Mauricio Pochettino. Episode 82 - Andy Carroll's street heading ring23 Nov 202000:40:29
Dale is joined by Mike to discuss whether football cares about it’s players. The answer is no - but you need to listen to hear our reasons… Episode 82 has references to the illegal art of street heading, founded by Andy Carroll, as well as some Casey Stoney admiration. We share our views on how the Daily Mail launched a pathetic attack on Marcus Rashford. There’s a reference to a brilliant column, written by Jonathan Liew for the Guardian, which describes the sinister attack on a young black man. Although it's difficult to predict what sort of performance we will get from the lads this weekend, United are expected to claim three points from their home meeting with West Brom. Former United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will be between the posts for the Baggies, and he's been talking about the impact David de Gea has had on his career, in the lead up to the match. Episode 81 - Edinson Cavani off the mark09 Nov 202000:50:53
Dale and Mike return to discuss Manchester United's 3-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park. A lot of United's players will leave their Carrington camp for the November international break, so that means we will be taking a break from the usual post-match show for a week. Bruno Fernandes scored twice and registered an assist for Edinson Cavani as United beat Everton 3-1. Bernard scored Everton's only goal and it was the match's opener, but thankfully United responded the right way and came from behind to take all three points from their travels. Episode 80 - Respect for Solskjaer still strong regardless of what happens06 Nov 202000:33:44
Stretty News editor Dale O'Donnell is joined by one of the blog's leading writers Ben Parsons to chat as pressure mounts on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager after Manchester United's latest defeat against Istanbul. It's a tough time for any football fan when the media is speculating over the manager getting sacked, and it doesn't help that Mauricio Pochettino is waiting on the wings for a call from Ed Woodward. That pressure has always existed, though. Since Solskjaer got the job on a full-time basis there has been always been talk about Pochettino. Not helped by our form, which has been up and down, but it's arguably more real now than ever. Dale gives his views on Solskjaer - a man he and Ben still hold utmost respect for - and they both ask what is the next step as United find themselves in the mud after a poor start to the 2020-21 campaign. Episode 79 - Talking Sir Alex Ferguson with author of Even The Defeats03 Nov 202001:02:21
Even the Defeats - How Sir Alex Ferguson used setbacks to inspire Manchester United's greatest triumphs, by John Silk (published by Pitch Publishing) Here's a special bonus episode of the Strettycast, in which I chat to John Silk about his brand new book 'Even the Defeats'. It's about the great Sir Alex Ferguson and how he drew inspiration from losses to mastermind some of United's greatest triumphs. Follow John on Twitter @JSilk - and you can pick up the book from your local bookshop or online via Amazon. -- A heavy 5-1 loss at Manchester City in Ferguson's early tenure led pundits and supporters to question the Scot's position, but by the season's end he was holding aloft his first trophy at the club -the FA Cup. This trend continued when an end-of-season collapse handed Leeds United the league title in the spring of 1992, only to galvanise United to their first championship in 26 years the very next year. From struggles in Europe to winning the treble, from losing the title on goal difference to their city rivals to winning the Premier League in Ferguson's final season in charge -rising from the depths of despair to achieve glory, and using failure to fuel success, was arguably Sir Alex's greatest strength. John Silk brings you the inside story of what made Ferguson tick, with views from players, coaches and other members of staff from the great Scot's reign. Even the Defeats reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson discovered a roadmap for glory in some of Manchester United’s most painful defeats. Read and find out how the legendary Scottish manager found solutions to problems during his early days, none more so than after a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City. Or about the time when United and Fergie’s world came crashing down after losing the league to Leeds United, which triggered title success a year later to end 26 years of hurt•How Ferguson scratched the Champions League itch that had been irritating him for so long. The exchanges he had with his coaching staff and players that helped drag United from the depths of despair to their greatest triumphs/ What Sir Alex learnt from losing to some of his greatest adversaries, before eventually overcoming them, and how he managed to rouse himself and the team one last time after the final-day title loss to their cross-city rivals. Deflated after Arsenal defeat Hey listeners, we're back with our podcast and unfortunately the circumstances aren't great. Dale and Mike discuss yesterday's 1-0 defeat against Arsenal at Old Trafford. We were looking forward to the match and did not expect such an underwhelming performance after beating RB Leipzig 5-0 midweek, so it feels horrible. Thanks for your questions. Hosted on Acast. Episode 77 - Willie Morgan EXCLUSIVE03 Aug 202000:31:44
Willie Morgan is this week’s special guest on the Strettycast. The former Manchester United midfielder describes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s job in his first full season in charge as “a miracle” because so few people believed in him from the beginning. Morgan thinks Solskjaer is still managing a lot of average players but stresses this is a five year project, and the manager needs time. Morgan stresses that he doesn’t want Alexis Sanchez anywhere near Old Trafford again. Moreover on that, he’s quite critical of Jose Mourinho “for bringing a lot of bad people in”. Scotland international Scott McTominay is called “the new Nobby Stiles” before Morgan names his Manchester United player of the year. We ask Morgan about potential transfers and reckons Lionel Messi would be interested in a switch to Old Trafford. We touch on the managers Morgan played under at the club - Sir Matt Busby, Wilf McGuiness, Frank O’Farrell and Tommy Docherty. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Episode 76 - Solskjaer delivers, now time for board to back him27 Jul 202001:01:55
Manchester United are back in the Champions League! Dale is joined by Leah and Ben to discuss Manchester United clinching third spot in the Premier League after beating Leicester City 2-0 at the King Power Stadium. We look at what this means for United in the Europa League, players needing a period of rest and which players Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be looking to sign in the transfer market - open as of today for the next 10 weeks. The Reds already have one foot in the Europa League quarter-finals which, like the semi-finals, will be play as one-legged fixtures. Next season we have the Champions League theme tune to look forward to! Follow @Strettycast on Twitter! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information. Learn more about your ad choices. Episode 75 - Take it in the face23 Jul 202000:48:41
Dale and Mike are joined by Keane Franey from the Weekly Armchair Kickoff Podcast. Keane, named after a former Manchester United captain, is an Irish Red who I have known for some years. We invited him on to discuss the recent game against West Ham which ended in a 1-1 draw. All three of the panel take aim at Paul Pogba for his embarrassing attempt to save his face from the ball. He should do better when he was at least 15 yards away from where the ball was kicked. Use your face, head, check, or whatever. NOT YOUR HAND! Chelsea then lost 5-3 against Liverpool to hand us the key to third place with just one game remaining. The lads preview Sunday's clash against Leicester, a must win as far as we're all concerned. Episode 73 - PSG want Marcus Rashford18 Jul 202001:00:31
Dale and Mike are back with another match review as Manchester United got back to winning ways against Crystal Palace on Thursday night. In what was a cagey encounter against Roy Hodgson's Eagles, United had to battle but not without some VAR controversy... We talk a bit about that but are mindful that VAR coverage is becoming tiresome. It is worth nothing that since recording, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher shared his opinion that Graham Scott made the right call by not awarding a penalty when Victor Lindelof challenged Wilfried Zaha inside the box. Palace also had a goal rightly disallowed for offside. Moreover, listen out for our reflections on an Independent report from Miguel Delaney suggesting that PSG manager Thomas Tuchel is targeting Marcus Rashford and would back the club to bid over £100m for the England international in a COVID-19 market. Episode 72 - Questions asked of Harry Maguire14 Jul 202000:43:49
Dale and Leah discuss Manchester United's disappointing 2-2 draw with Southampton. They take nothing away from Ralph Hasenhuttl's side. They pressed like a pack of wild dogs and make issues for Manchester United. Our midfield couldn't breathe. Nemanja Matic looked shattered, Paul Pogba became frustrated and Bruno Fernandes had an off-night despite providing an assist for another Anthony Martial goal. We go in hard on Harry Maguire this week because his ongoing mistakes are unacceptable. It's time he improved because he's committing similar errors to his partner in crime, Victor Lindelof, and that should be an insult to the England international. Leah goes on a rant about VAR after an checked incident saw a Southampton player deliberately stamp on Mason Greenwood after the ball left his feet. It wasn't the only decision that had us scratching our heads last night... Send us feedback via Twitter (@Strettycast) or become a member on Patreon: http://patreon.com/strettynews Hosted on Acast. Episode 71 - Penalty claims and having a better midfield than the Premier League winners10 Jul 202000:51:38
Dale and Mike go through Thursday night's 3-0 win over Aston Villa. The game saw a controversial penalty awarded in Manchester United's favour when Bruno Fernandes was brought down on the edge of the box before converting his spot kick. Mike has a look at the rule book and says Jon Moss made the right decision despite what the Premier League will have you think. Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings hardly had the best auditions as two players linked with moves to United. We agree that Solskjaer will be put off making a move for either player. Also we think more fans are coming to terms with Grealish not being a necessity this summer. He wouldn't start in the current line-up! Mings, on the other hand, had a dig swung at him by Roy Keane for his defending in the lead up to Mason Greenwood's goal. What a player! Next up is Southampton. Mike gives you reasons to be wary ahead of that game on Monday night (8pm). That means our next podcast will be recorded and uploaded on Tuesday. Thanks for listening and we appreciate your feedback! Episode 70 - The Sky is the limit for Mason Greenwood 06 Jul 202000:20:04
A big panel on the Strettycast this week as Dale is joined by some of the blog's writers: Leah, Aaron, Philip and Matt. Matt decides to join us on Zoom from his local Tesco supermarket. Episode 69 - United looking good for third place03 Jul 202000:56:00
Dale and Mike preview Manchester United's upcoming clash against Bournemouth in the Premier League. They also take some time out to review the 3-0 win over Brighton as United start to show a level of consistency against the lesser sides. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men had some extra relief during the week as West Ham beat Chelsea and Everton took three points from Leicester City. This weekend we could do with Arsenal taking points off Wolves but that's some ask for the Gunners at the moment. Follow on podcast on Twitter - @Strettycast. 194: Gareth Southgate links, Kobbie Mainoo 'hype' & academy insight28 Mar 202401:39:50
Dale and Brian are joined by fellow Stretty News writers Matt and Fabiola for a chat about all things Manchester United during the international break. That, of course, means a discussion around the timely Gareth Southgate links. Try not to shudder as we look at the prospect of Waistcoat landing the biggest job in football. The international break brought more (deserved) hype to Kobbie Mainoo, but hear why we're concerned about the English media. It shouldn't come as a surprise. Furthermore, Fabiola gives us some insight into the academy. Sit back, relax and get yourself comfy, it’s episode 194. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Episode 68 - FA Cup semi-finals & Angel Gomes contract expires29 Jun 202000:41:49
Reviewing the win over Norwich City, FA Cup semi-final draw and Angel Gomes’ imminent departure. All on this morning’s podcast! Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made eight changes for United’s FA Cup quarter-final tie against Norwich and we discuss whether this was the right call from the manager. Although we got across the line with a Harry Maguire winner in extra time, Solskjaer called upon his usual starters from the bench so it wasn’t as if they got a rest before Tuesday’s league clash against an in-form Brighton side. Some fans argued that the game vs Norwich was Bruno Fernandes’ worst performance in a red shirt, so Dale and Leah respond to those claims and offer an explanation as to why he wasn’t most effective throughout the game. The FA Cup draw sees United take on Chelsea in the semi-finals, with both relatively inexperienced managers looking for their first major honour in the game. We also discuss Angel Gomes after Solskjaer admitted in his press conference that there’s a very good chance the youngster will leave the club. His contract expires tomorrow night. Hosted on Acast. Episode 67 - Race for Champions League spots is firmly on25 Jun 202001:14:32
Dale and Mike run through Manchester United's recent games against Tottenham Hotspur and Sheffield United. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side took four points from a possible six, and you can hear it in our voices that we are feeling optimistic about clinching a Champions League spot. A lot of eyes will be on Chelsea's league encounter with Manchester City on Thursday night. Should the Blues lose, they will sit just two points ahead of the Red Devils in fourth-place. We are awaiting news from the CAS case on whether City will be allowed to play in the Champions League next season -- potentially making fifth-place a Champions League spot. But United have what it takes to finish fourth or maybe even third if Leicester City start dropping more points.
