The O60s / O70s championship released a statement this week with regards to the World Cup ‘incident’

We discuss whether putting it out on Facebook with comments turned on is a good idea as yet again it attracted a whole raft of critical comments, almost certainly from people not directly connected to Seniors cricket

Let’s hope this can now be finished and everyone can focus on the numerous positives that surround Seniors cricket in England.

We will cover the final O70s Div 2 and 3 matches and the O65s regional competition final in our next episode.

060s 1st and 2nd XI Cup R16 - 070s v NZ - 060s World Cup14 août 202600:48:48

We are into August which means knockout county O60s and O70s cricket, the O60s World Cup in Toronto and the O70s ODI series between England and New Zealand

This week was the round of 16 of the O60s Cup competition - so who won the prediction between Grant and Trevor?

We also had the round of 16 in the O60s 2nd XI Cup, some prelim matches in the O60s 2nd XI Bowl competition and in the O60s 3rd XI Vase

Extreme heat saw all O70s Div 2 and Div 3 matches cancelled and all the O70s 1st XI Bowl prelim matches postponed

Here’s a link to Ron Hedley’s march as featured on Songs of Praise https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m003056z/songs-of-praise-the-power-of-walking

Matches got underway at the O60s World Cup in Toronto with as we record no surprises os far

Matches on Wednesday largely went to Duckworth - Lewis when the rains came and with no covers for the grounds all of Thursday’s matches were cancelled

The infrastructure, or lack of it, was always going to be a talking point

England won the first O70s ODI at Frocester by 84 runs - match 2 is on Sunday 16th at Royal Fareham and match 3 on Tuesday 18th at High Wycombe

New Zealand 070s team manager Lindsay Hewitson looks ahead to the Silver Fern Series29 juil. 202600:29:41

New Zealand O70s are touring England and Wales in August

Great therefore to have on Silver Stumps the New Zealand team manager Lindsay Hewitson

Lindsay gives us an insight into the tour party. Some of them were over here for the 2024 O70s World Cup.

Including in those insights are some interesting skills and experiences that some of the squad have had in their lives including a long distance triathlete, an opera singer, someone whose grandfather was coached by WG Grace and someone who has played representative Cricket for Cornwall, not though the Cornwall where Silver Stumps is based

New Zealand O70s will play eight matches in 17 days including three ODI’s starting with a match against Somerset on August 2nd.

Australia 060s skipper Peter Judd looks ahead to the 060s World Cup in Toronto26 juil. 202600:27:32

Great to have Australia O60s Captain Peter Judd, Juddy as he's known to the Masters Cricket world, on Silver Stumps ahead of Australia travelling to Toronto for the O60s World Cup where they will be seeking to defend the title they won back in Chennai in February / March 2024

The Australia squad contains seven new names from the squad that came over to England for the Grey Ashes in 2025. Peter gives us a bit of a steer on some of those players whose names may not be familiar to our listeners.

We also have a quick review of the recent three match series Australia played against New Zealand and I get Peter to share his view of Masters cricket going forward.

060s and 070s Championships hotting up plus round 4 of 065s17 juil. 202600:51:26

Another packed week of O60s, O65s and O70s county and regional championship cricket plus the England O60s Lions played Western Australia and down under Australia and New Zealand O60s played out a close run three match World Cup warm up series.

As usual this week's matches delivered some extraordinary performances - for example in the O70s Div 1 where Alan Hunter of Hertfordshire began the last over of the match v Middlesex with figures of 1-39 with Middlesex needing 16 to win and finished the over with figures of 5-39 including a hat-trick.

And in O70s Div 2 in a 40 over game Sussex chased down Essex's 310/4 with a batter on each side making 150+

The South West Falcons secured their place in the O65s Grand Final with a match to go with the Northern Superchargers well placed to join them in the September 10th final.

Changes to England World Cup Squad plus 060s and 070s round up10 juil. 202600:48:59

More changes to the England O60s World Cup Squad - Steve Aston out Colin Cliff in - Nick Gaywood out Neal Jackson in - just 4 players left who were part of the 2024 Chennai World Cup squad - Edward Gordon Lennox, Mel Hussain, Phil Deakin and Simon Routh

A very warm week but most O60s and O70s matches survived the heat - we round them up

On the management front O60s / O70s Chair Dave Murphy has announced he is stepping down when his two year term as Chair ends in December. Interim Vice-Chair Len Attard is co-ordinating the recruitment of a new Chair. Interested parties should drop Len an email via len@electricmango.co.uk

And we ask this question - who has played O50s+ cricket for the longest time who is still playing regularly today. Our current leader is Cornwall O70s player Mike Conbeer who first played for the Cornwall O50s team in 1994

And did we have some records this week - was Andy Kemp's 74 out of Shropshire's 106/6 in O70s Div 1 at 70% a record percentage of runs in a completed innings by an individual in O60s / O7Os cricket?

And in the O70s Div 1 match which finished Surrey 290/0 and Bucks 130/2 the lowest number of wickets to fall in an O60s / O70s match?

Let us know via : podcast@trevorjlee.com

Did we have two records last week when Norfolk O70s batter Geoff Roper scored 206 not out and added 327 for the first wicket with Randolph Lofthouse?

Finally a full programme of O60s and O70s county championship cricket! 03 juil. 202600:59:52

Grant's back to cover the matches - very good timing as we finally had virtually a full programme of O60s and O70s county championship cricket. Some matches went to the wire - we cover them all including a match where 2 players scored 99 in the same innings.

This week's packed episode also includes cameo appearances from Somerset's Andy Sapey and Kent's Gary Joyce.

We also mention helmets, or the lack of them amongst batters, after a player top edged and suffered a significant cut across the bridge of his nose.

Did we have two records last week when Norfolk O70s batter Geoff Roper scored 206 not out and added 327 for the first wicket with Randolph Lofthouse?

Dramatic last ball decider in clash of the O65s Table Toppers19 juin 202600:34:57

It was round 3 of the regional O65s competition with the two unbeaten teams - the Northern Superchargers and the South West Falcons meeting at Thurgarton near Nottingham - the visitors won on the last ball

In terms of O60s Div 1 the big shock was Berkshire beating Essex to record their first win of the season

Three teams retain 100% records in O60s Div 2, with four teams unbeaten in Division 3.

In the O70s Div 1 five teams are on 100% with 3 teams still looking for that elusive first win of the season

Have we had a catching record this week? 12 juin 202600:23:44

Cricket is always ready to create records no matter what age you are and how long you've been playing.

England O70s opener Chris Evans proved that this week when after dropping a catch at slip in the first over of the match v Kent he stayed in situ and remarkably then took six catches at slip as Kent were dismissed for 105 with the other four wickets all being catches as well.

Has either happened before in 60s/70s cricket?  Here’s a link to the scorecard.

Meanwhile up North Nick Gaywood plundered 161 not out and over in Essex Mel Hussain made an unbeaten 133.

Six teams retain 100% records in O60s Div 2, with 5 teams unbeaten in Division 3.

Only match took place across Division 4 and 5.

With recent Thursday’s missing the rain and extreme heat the tables turned this week with the O70s programme completely wiped out.

Epic finishes to O60s 1st XI matches despite the Rain! 08 juin 202600:17:05

Just 13 matches across the entire over 60s and over 70s eight divisions were played to a finish – unbelievable given that this was the first week in June.

But nevertheless of the five matches that were completed in the over 60s first division three were epic finishes which we talk about in a little bit of detail.  I also touch upon the Test match at Lords – what is going on there?

And I say thanks to Nigel Harrington and Alan Hocking who recently umpired and scored respectively their 100th match for Cornwall Seniors – do you have officials who have reached such a landmark and deserve a shout out on this podcast? Let me know.

England retain O70s World Cup 05 mars 202600:26:06

England retained the O70s World Cup they won in 2024 with a 15 run win over Australia at the magnificent Hagley Oval in Christchurch New Zealand.

England were put in and Jim Phillips and Chris Evans added 183 in 30 overs for the first wicket.

England made 288/3 and in reply Australia were always behind the rate and finished 15 runs short despite a 115 unbeaten partnership in 13 overs between Gary Budden and Greg Stagg.

The tournament started on the 18th of February and featured  England, USA, India, Canada, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and a Rest of the World team.

Each team played each other in a round robin format with the top two going through to the final.

Australia won every game in the group stage and the only group match England lost was to Australia.

Unfortunately, the rain did affect some of the games including the penultimate round of group games when New Zealand needed to beat England to have a chance of reaching the final

NZ were 51 for five off 23 overs when the rain came and the match was abandoned

The hosts finished 3rd on the same number of points as England but with a much inferior run rate

Canada and the USA both won 3 group matches

India with one win and Sri Lanka with no wins found the going quite tough

England 070s retain Silver Ashes plus 060s Lions in India16 févr. 202600:27:13

Here we are in the middle of February and there's lots of O60s and O70s Cricket to talk about.

Grant also fills us in on ‘Cricket on Ice’ which sounds like some sort of celebrity TV reality show but in actual fact is proper cricket played in St Moritz with our favourite commentator and umpire team involved – Rash and Mel Mahmood.

It's your final chance to win a copy of Roland Butcher's book 'Breaking Barriers - Barbados to England and back’. If you know the answer to the question we set the beginning of the episode then send your answer to podcast@trevorjlee.com

We have a quick look back at the England O60s Lions tour of India and then focus on the fantastic effort by the England O70s who whitewashed their Australian hosts in their own backyard to retain the Silver Ashes and now look forward to defending the O70s World Cup in Christchurch New Zealand.

It's an 8 team tournament featuring England, USA, India, Canada, Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and a Rest of the World team.

Everybody plays everybody in a round robin format with matches every two days starting on the 18th of February - 10am New Zealand time which is 9 pm on the 17th of February here in the UK

The top two teams from the round robin stage meet in the final on March 5th at the Hagley Oval - a ground which hosted its first Test match on Boxing Day 2014 and on day one a certain Brendan McCullum scored 195 off 134 balls v Sri Lanka.

Will we see a repeat of that kind of innings in the O70s final?

Two years of the Silver Stumps podcast04 févr. 202600:41:57

This episode of the Silver Stumps Podcast goes live on February 4th, two years since the first episode went live on February 4th, 2024. Who would have thought that we would still be here two years and 93 episodes later!

So we take this opportunity to have a quick look back over those two years and pick out some of the highlights and memorable moments.

We've had lots and lots of fantastic guests, some amazing contributors, some super people who support and share the podcast, far more listeners than we ever dreamt of and importantly we've made a lot of new friends in the Seniors / Masters Cricket community.

To celebrate the two years of podcasting we have a book written by Roland Butcher with a personal inscription 'to a lucky listener' to give away.

So if you would like to win the copy of Roland's 'Breaking Barriers - Barbados to England and back' book then tune in to the episode for the key question and send your answer to podcast@trevorjlee.com

Chris Bowmer : Looking ahead to the England Lions tour of India 22 janv. 202600:27:33

The England Lions are off to India to take part in India's O60s 'Nationals' Tournament alongside teams from the South, North, West and Central Zones as well as team called the Global Patriots. It's going to be full on with 5 matches in 6 days at the amazing Pondicherry complex which has no less than six cricket grounds.

In this episode we catch up with Northamptonshire's Chris Bowmer as he prepares to be part of the England Lions squad for the tournament. Chris talks about how he only got involved with seniors cricket in 2023 at 60, which is also the number of championship wickets he's taken in the last 3 season.

How his wicket taking got him a trial in 2024, a match for the Chairman's XI v Australia in 2025 and subsequent matches for the Lions.

Chris has post-season moved to Durham so will be joining their ranks in 2026.

For full details of the India tour check out the digital tour programme

We will keep up to date with the tour which runs from Jan 27th to February 3rd

At the same time the England O70s will start their tour of Australia and New Zealand

On our last episode (91) we were joined by England O70s Captain John Evans and Tour Manager Chris Lowe.

Scotland Seniors Cricket catch up Clark McConnachie 17 déc. 202500:39:24

In this episode Clark McConnachie, captain of Scotland Seniors O60s, reflects on a first year as Scotland Seniors and members of the IMC and looks ahead to Scotland playing in the O60s World Cup for the first time in August 2026 in Toronto.

Not only have they re-branded - previously all their matches were under the banner of the Forty Club - but earlier in the year Scotland Seniors became the 15th country to join the International Masters Cricket organisation. Scotland Seniors covers all ‘Masters’ ages groups under one roof - O40s, O50s, O60s and at some point going forward O70s.

The Scotland O60s played pre-season matches in April against Lancashire, Yorkshire and Durham/Northumberland. This was followed with matches in May against England and the England Lions and then a memorable full international against Australia at Stirling with final international matches in the Tri-Nations against Wales, England Lions and England - although the latter was cancelled due to adverse weather.

On a recent episode (87) we had the amazing Ron Hedley talking about his fantastic  cricket tour to the Vatican and the incredible fundraising for prostate cancer awareness which has raised almost £80,000.

To make a donation to the amazing fundraising use this link: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/support-rons-march-for-prostate-cancer?tk=MTY2NDEzNTYxNjQ2MDkwOGQ3NzE4NjE0NTRkZGQ4ZWViNDRhODE4ODY5ZmY3ZTI5ZGY%3D

Australia O60s and O65s "Nationals' with TP 11 déc. 202500:44:53

Friend of the show and Australia O60s top player Tony Panecasio - TP - joins us on this episode to share and discuss what happened at the 'Nationals' for both Australia 060s and O65s, the latter which was held in Christchurch, New Zealand.

TP was excited for the O60s tournament skippering his state New South Wales for the first time but unfortunately ripped his hamstring 3 balls in!

TP gives us insights in both tournaments.

We also touch upon the Silver Ashes between Australia and England taking place at the beginning of February and the O70s World Cup also in Christchurch, New Zealand starting on February 17th.

Ron Hedley - Vatican Tour and Prostate Cancer Awareness and Fundraising Update10 nov. 202500:35:30

We first had Ron Hedley on Silver Stumps on episode 6 - March 15th 2024.

At that point Ron had raised an incredible £32000 for the Bob Willis Prostate Cancer Awareness Fund

Ron told us that six months later the fundraising walks would finish on his 75th birthday - September 15th 2024 - at Lords

Well over a year later from that proposed finish the awareness and fundraising continues and Ron has just returned from an amazing cricket tour of the Vatican

We catch up with Ron and discover he’s just as enthusiastic and energised as he was when we first met. Probably more so!

Special Guest: Sir Tim Rice - O60s/70s Vice-President09 oct. 202500:27:13

Sir Tim Rice loves cricket, so much so that back in the early 70s he set up his own side – Heartaches CC – which is still going strong today. In the second week of September for over the 40th time the Heartaches came down to Cornwall to play three matches.

I was lucky enough to play for the Heartaches against Falmouth on the Thursday and then against them for my long-standing club side Mullion on the Friday.

During the Friday match I caught up with Tim and he talked about his love of cricket, how he got started playing cricket, and how he sees cricket moving forward.

We have several guests lined up for the months ahead. If you have an idea for someone who would make a great guest please do let us know via podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk

Tony and Tracy Panecasio - Tour Reflections and Best Bits 12 août 202500:24:05

I had the pleasure of hosting Tony and Tracy Panecasio in Truro for a couple of days before they headed home at the conclusion of the Grey Ashes tour.

We took the opportunity to record an episode in which they reflect on the tour and recall some of the best non-cricketing bits including the places they've visited, the socials they've enjoyed and the people they've met.

Tracy also shares what it is like to be a WAG (Wives and Girlfriends) on tour - particularly when not knowing prior to the tour any of the other WAG's.

Tony played in every one of the five ODIs but also was the chief media correspondent for the tour, whilst Tracy took hundreds if not thousands of photographs so during their time here in Truro I encouraged them to turn it all into a book because a tour like this needs a book!

England O60s v USA + Roland Butcher + County Round Up08 août 202500:48:48

It's yet another packed episode where we cover all the O60s and O70s county games, we review England and England Lions v the USA, what happened in the South West O65s 2 day 2 innings match in Bath and we've got O60s/O70s Vice-President Roland Butcher on.

Trevor recorded as short seven minute piece with Roland during the third England versus Australia ODI at Thame on July 18th.

Roland talks about his career and new book: Breaking Barriers - Barbados to England ….and back - you can find it here: https://www.rolandbutcher.co.uk

For many of the 60s divisions this was a week off between the end of the group matches and the start of the knockout stages, with the exception of two Bowl prelim matches in Div 1 and the usual league matches in Div 4.

In the O70s Div 1 it was the final week of league matches with Div 2 and Div 3 as normal.

Last week Grant talked about the Graham Thorpe headband he is sporting in the thumbnail for that episode
