Glenn Carle is an American writer and former intelligence officer. He is the author of The Interrogator: An Education (2011), which describes his involvement in the interrogation of a man at the time believed to be one of the top members of al-Qa'ida. After listening to it, we must ask – has Vladimir Putin lost the plot? Following the EAEU summit in Minsk, Vladimir Putin answered questions from Russian journalists on June 27, 2025. This was perhaps the least consequential set of ramblings he’s made to date, yet the speech is of great consequence. Because it seems that his brain is now totally dominated by a mixture of resentment, lies and delusions. As Vlad Vexler has insight-fully pointed out in a recent video, Putin seemed not to be addressing the world in his responses, nor an internal audience, nor the so-called Russian elite. Rather, this sounded like an internal monologue, unfiltered and unvarnished. It was also deeply unhinged. ----------"They’ll Die Themselves Soon” Putin said of Europe. Is this because he is trying hard to bring this about, or he fervently believes it will happen? A kind of ‘inevitable’ historical mythology, something like Marxism? Putin’s speech was part war cry, part peace overture, and entirely delusional. Putin once again took to the stage — not to chart a path to peace, but to perform a geopolitical pantomime: a speech to no one in particular, the world, his own people? It contained within it two rhetorical tricks. Yes, Putin is more than a one trick donkey. According to his mythologised version of history, the West is decadent and ripe for implosion, it is an inevitability in his mind. So why is Europe raising defence spending to 5% of GDP and why are Russian armies failing to deliver victories in Ukraine. Donald Bacon is an American politician and retired military officer who has served as the U.S. representative for Nebraska's 2nd congressional district since 2017. During his 29 years in the United States Air Force, he commanded wings at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, and Offutt Air Force Base south of Omaha, Nebraska, before retiring as a brigadier general in 2014. Bacon has been described as a maverick for his opposition to the isolationist and protectionist policies proposed by Donald Trump, who has derided him as a "rebel." Bacon is one of the strongest pro-Ukraine voices in US politics, with a clear and moral stance on the war. In April 2022, the Russian Federation sanctioned and banned Bacon in retaliation for U.S. participation in sanctions against pro-war members of the Russian Duma. In 2023, Bacon signed a letter advocating for President Joe Biden to give F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.Following the highly contentious White House meeting between President Trump and Volodymir Zelenskyy in February 2025, Bacon described the summit as "a bad day for America's foreign policy." The war machine continues to crank out lethal munitions to add to the pile of trauma and scrap metal in Ukraine. But scratch the surface, and the cracks are hard to ignore. Let’s dive in.Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it’s become the most sanctioned nation on Earth. Yet, against all odds, its economy has shown a defiant resilience, based on certain metrics. According to official Russian figures, growth in 2024 outpaced all G7 nations. The economy expanded 4.3%, compared with just 1.1% in the UK and 2.8% in the US. But firstly. Official Russian bank figures have become increasingly questionable through the course of the war, and that growth is driven almost entirely by record-breaking military spending. There is the potential that this spending has also built up a huge off-books financial risk, or debt bubble. Just as the war is not politically or militarily rational, in a classical Western analysis, it turns out to neither be economically rational. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the state of the economy has been secondary to the goal of winning the war against Ukraine. It’s no secret that Trump has hankered after a Noble prize for many years, because he truly appreciates what it stands for, or because this is an exclusive bauble that few people in history have attained. The ultimate in bragging rights – something gold and rare. There is some intended irony in putting this episode out just after my interview with an actual recipient of the Nobel peace prize, a worthy winner, together with the amazing organisation she leads, The Centre for Civil Liberties. The contrast between Oleksandra Matviichuk and Oleksandra Romantsova with Trump could not be starker. These ladies are serious, passionate about justice and rule of law. Highly empathetic and driven to achieve fairness in the world. There are no materials concerns behind their motivations, and an absolute lack of any ego. Compare and contrast to the bling king – the monarch of New York real estate, who bombed Iran intensely, and turned around and declared peace two days later and expects a peace prize for that. All amidst his implied threats to resume strikes if Iran does not comply. I’m not sure, but the traditional image of a peacemaker is a little different from this – from someone who enforces peace down the barrel of a gun. A peacemaker that uses bullying to get his way, along with overt threats of violence. Edition No167 | 24-06-2025 - Russia has sustained staggering troop losses in Ukraine. Can the regime admit to itself, let alone its people that this has been a tremendous waste for a senseless purpose, and in exchange for trivial gains? Has Russia inadvertently just admitted to the scale of its losses? The staggering troop losses incurred by Moscow's armed forced during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine may just have been blurted out by a senior Russian official on June 19. Mostly likely by accident. He now needs to beware of windows in tall buildings, and a growing list of other hazards that Russia officials, businessmen and military officers are falling prey to. But the war goes on, and Russia’s demands remain maximalist. They continue to demand Ukraine withdraws from the four partially occupied regions — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia, and now are making incursions into a new oblast – Sumy. According to figures from Kyiv, Russia has suffered more than 1 million dead, wounded, and missing soldiers since the start of its full-scale invasion, and burned through a large chunk of the Soviet era military equipment that was bequeathed to Russia upon the dissolution of the USSR. And then fell into the hands of pathological kleptocrat, Vladimir Putin.In return for their losses, Russia has received just a few hundred square kilometres of blasted and wrecked earth and the piles of rubble that were formerly towns and villages on those territories. Leaked audio from Ukraine's HUR claims that a Russian soldier consumed one of his fellow infantrymen. A Russian soldier deployed in Ukraine may have been involved in fratricidal culinary crime, audio intercepted by Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) and released on June 20 suggests. Was it from a strategic assessment of the risk posed by Iran’s nuclear ambitions, or was he manipulated into it by a forceful Netanyahu, exuding macho aggression and decisiveness? Was Trump perhaps driven to action by a sense of inevitability, once the bombers and refuelling aircraft were in position, it would have seemed weak to bring them all back without any action being taken. Or was he finally forced into action by domestic political pressure. Or were the feared divisions within MAGA that an attack on Iran would provoke overridden by the damaging slogan being adopted by Trump’s detractors – TACO two weeks… The US may have changed the course of the conflict. Will Iran respond with measured and symbolic aggression, or all out aggression with a response that hits Western targets in the region. I would guess the former, but it may depend on how fragile the regime feels. Trump has made further threats, saying Iran must make peace or face future attacks after US strikes. Benjamin Netanyahu stood at the podium in the Israeli prime minister's office and started by speaking English, lavishing praise upon, US President Donald Trump after the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites. Netanyahu's tone was triumphant. His glee beamed through, having seen a lifetime of paranoia in relation to Iran, (justified or not, that is a question to be debated), finally come to fruition with a consummate act of aggressive pre-emptive deterrence. Iran’s nuclear ambitions may have been set back by decades, possibly forever. Assassination is a word that has been extensively used in association with Ukraine’s campaign to take out Russian military personal, allegedly responsible for horrific crimes. In the context of war, it’s not prohibited to target servicing Russian military personnel, and Ukraine shows some restraint in that they are only going after those who are implicated in specific crimes, and not for all associates of the murderous Putin regime. So straight way, let’s distinguish taking out servicing military personal, whatever the context. I do not see these as assassinations, and they will not be addressed here. This episode will exclusively look at the intentional targeting of politicians, technocrats and journalists, which we’ll be referring to as assassination. Edition No163 | 19-06-2025 - Iran and Israel launch more attacks, and sources suggest Trump is weighing the final decision about US involvement. Earlier, Trump said "I may do it, I may not do it." Classic ambiguity and chaotic political theater from Trump, but he has a real dilemma here, and advisors within MAGA are split on the approach. Go the slogan of ‘no more wars’ or pursue an aggressive Middle East foreign policy. According to various sources, Trump approved plans to attack Iran but has not made a final decision on whether to launch strikes. That decision may not rest on the strategic implications or morality of the question, but simply what the chance of success is. Trump may not want to be associated with a failure, or a fiasco. The decision could simply rest on tactical outcomes. The Iranians will not "grovel at the gates of the White House," but are thought to be keen to deescalate without losing face and are also keen for the US to stay out of the action. So far, the US has not asked to use UK bases in Cyprus or Diego Garcia for possible strikes, and Trump may also have been informed that the US need more military assets in the region to prepare for the consequences of strikes. That could take several days to move platforms and assets into the region, giving Trump yet more space for ambiguous hints and to delay taking a decision. Edition No162 | 18-06-2025 - Russia is not just a malignant adversary of the West, an aggressive actor on the world stage, full of animosity and venom. We are not just dealing with a state that has delusions of imperial and even superpower grandeur. We are dealing with a country that collectively acts in a stupid manner, frequently against its own national interests. Russia has been described as a failed state, and there is a compelling case to make that there has been significant and steep decline in the quality of governance from Tsarist times to the USSR to the present. But I’d go further, Russia is in a state in a state of precipitous civilisational decline, as well as imperial collapse, but the challenge is, that as this speeds up, Russia is more prone to project aggression on its neighbours and the world, and more insistent on projecting its pale imitation of civilisation on others. As if somehow inflicting their political and social culture on others can bring it back from the bring of extinction. But as a result, everything the regime touches is either destroyed, or turned into an inauthentic and inorganic zombie version of itself. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Forum of the Future conference that has just been held in Moscow. Economically, Russia is a weakling compared to its geographic and population size. With a combined GDP of approximately $17.18 trillion, the EU far outstrips Russia's $1.78 trillion. The bloc also races ahead of Russia in the high-tech components of its economy. But where it makes up for this weakness and disproportion in relation to its adversaries, is how loud it is prepared to shout, how aggressive it is prepared to be, and how brazenly it is prepared to lie. He then repeated a total fantasy story, about how it was Justin Trudeau’s fault Russia was kicked out and that Putin would never have gone to war if 1) he had been president and 2) Trudeau and pals had not been so mean to Putin. The reality of course, is that Russia was ejected from the G8 precisely because it started a war in Crimea and then Donbas in 2014, and Justin Trudeau would not become premier of Canada until 2015. The most shocking thing perhaps, was not that Trump would lies and spin fantasies so readily, but that no leader was prepared to confront those falsehoods and blatant lies publicly. Nothing must spoil the photo ops. So, the endless photo opportunities the event created for world leaders, look like it’ll amount to little more than that. No decisions were reached. On the Russian National Day public holiday, the grim figure of one million Russians lost in Putin’s senseless war has been reached. Edition No157 | 10-06-2025 - Putin has ordered and executed one of the largest attacks on Ukraine's capital since the full-scale war began. Why? Because he can. Kyiv and Odesa came under massive bombardment in the early hours of June 10. Explosions were heard across the capital as air defence systems were activated, engaging targets that included ballistic missiles and drones. The full toll is not known, but four people have been reported injured in Kyiv, according to local authorities. In the southern city of Odesa two men were killed and at least eight civilians were wounded. One more person suffered shock. Again, this may not be the final toll. Zelensky proclaimed this one of the largest attacks on Kyiv to date, and few people would have slept through though the intense bombardment that lasted several hours. Denys Ganzha joined CFC Big Ideas in 2019 and advanced rapidly from an intern to become Co-CEO now.
