Is following authority a sign of weakness — or wisdom? In this first part of our 2-part series on Respecting Authority, we explore what Islam teaches about obedience, leadership, and knowing when to follow, when to advise, and when to simply let go.
O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in true authority of you: So if you fall at odds over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day: That is superior, and best in outcome. (Quran 4:59)
In this first part of our 2-part Respecting Authority discussion, we shed light on how being a good follower and respecting one’s leadership brings tremendous benefit to the group as a whole. It even helps the leader become a better leader!
We exist in a society where challenging authority is often seen as intelligent, independent, and strong, and the simple act of following a direction given by someone else is viewed as weak, blind obedience. However, as Muslims, our relationship with authority is guided by values that differ greatly. Whether it's your father, mother, husband, elder, teacher, employer, or community leader, Islam teaches us that there is "adab" (manners) in knowing when to speak, when to give advice and when to simply follow.
Islamic leadership cannot be based on wanting followers to obey you solely so that you feel empowered. Leaders owe a duty to those in their care, and a true servant-leader will elicit the best in his or her followers. This episode examines both aspects of the relationship: how trust and mutual support allow leaders to feel less threatened and therefore be open to input, and how genuine leadership brings the best out of its followers. At times, we must speak up. At times, we must advise. And at times, we must recognise that we don't have to be right. Finding that middle ground can profoundly affect how our families, places of work and communities operate as well because a positive hierarchical structure is not merely who is in control but rather who understands the responsibilities associated with their position.
This episode looks at what happens when we apply these understandings in all of our day-to-day relationships. Some disagreements are truly minor - the sequence in which tasks are completed, how the car is loaded, etc., or possibly that our ideas would slightly improve upon theirs. However, consistently questioning, criticising, and pushing back against one another can ultimately generate resentment and make even seemingly minor interactions seem like battles of wills. When we respect someone's authority, it doesn't necessarily mean that he or she is correct every time or that we never have an alternative viewpoint. What it does mean is that resisting isn't our first reaction. There could potentially be blessings in letting go of our own desires simply because we value respect, cooperation and harmony more than anything else.
