On the 55th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, comedian and podcaster Don Jamieson, review the 1991 legendary album by Metallica, the self-titled album known as the "Black Album." The "Black Album" was Metallica's fifth studio album. It propelled Metallica from a small, but dedicated fan base to superstardom. Led by frontman, main lyricist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfied, polarizing drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist extraordinaire Kirk Hammet and bassist Jason Newsted. The album features five singles including a couple ballads, which were unheard of previously and the now classic, Enter Sandman. Although they did have a video for the previous album's single, "One", Metallica really utilized MTV and the music video format to propel the "Black Album." The album made it to Number 1 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 16X platinum, making it not only Metallica's biggest selling album, but one of the biggest selling album in history. The album was produced by Bob Rock and although it may have been a tumultuous relationship, which was documented, the result cannot be denied. This week Tom & Zeus review the 2009 KISS album, "Sonic Boom." This was KISS' 19th studio album and the 20th KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Sonic Boom was the first studio album by KISS in 11 years. It was the first to feature the current KISS lineup of Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Eric Singer & Tommy Thayer. The album was produced by Paul Stanley and Greg Collins. The band wanted to show that they can "still knock out anybody who's out there." The album had no outside writes and both Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer had their first lead vocals on a KISS song on Sonic Boom. They played some on these songs on tour for the album and "Say Yeah" is still played today on the End Of The Road Tour. The album cover was from Michael Doret, who previously created the cover to KISS' "Rock And Roll Over." The album came with a bonus CD called KISS Klassics, which was a re-recording of some of KISS' greatest hit by the current KISS lineup. A third disc contained a six-song live DVD recorded in Bueno Aires, Argentina on April 5, 2009. As usual the guys breakdown and analyze the tracks and rank the songs SIOL style. As always, they then compare the album and album cover and rank it against the previous studio albums reviewed. On the 44th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the rock album from the Foo Fighters, "Wasting Light" Wasting Light was the Foo Fighters' 7th studio album. The album was a commercial and critical hit, winning 4 Grammys, including best rock album. The album went platinum and also became the Foo Fighters first album to go #1 on Billboards 200. Led by the biggest rock star in the past 30 years, Dave Grohl on guitar and vocals, the dual guitar players, Pat Smear & Chris Shiflett, bassist Nate Mendel and the lovable late bad ass drummer Taylor Hawkins. The lyrics were credited to the whole band, although Grohl was the main lyricist. The album had 6 singles and basically a music video for every song. The album reconnect the legendary producer Butch Vig of Nirvana's Nevermind fame with Dave Grohl. The band wanted a rawer sound and Dave convinced Vig and the band to record the album in his garage with analog equipment. Grohl wanted this album to define the Foo Fighters and to many he succeeded. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1983 pivotal album, "Lick It Up" This was KISS' 11th studio album and the 23rd KISS studio album reviewed by SIOL. Lick It Up was the first studio album from KISS without the makeup. Before the release, the band was on MTV and unmasked with MTV VJ the late great J.J. Jackson and premiered the video for Lick It Up. This was the first (and last) credited album with Vinnie Vincent as a member. First not to have Ace Frehley credited as a member. First KISS album without any outside songwriters credited on an album. The album was produced by Michael James Jackson, who had just produced the previous album, Creatures Of The Night and the four original tracks on the compilation Killers. This was a critical point in KISStory. The band taking off the makeup was a big gamble. However, Paul kept thinking the audience was listening to KISS with their eyes and they needed to make this change. Now without the makeup, KISS was competing with their contemporaries on a even playing field. How did they do? Well, the album brought them back to not just gold status, but platinum. The addition of Vinnie Vincent was a difference maker. His guitar playing was great, but the energy he brought with his songwriting was just so evident. He co-wrote 8 of the 10 songs on the album, including the legendary title track, Lick It Up. The guys discuss the album cover, the videos and make a few bold statements about the album and the band with Vinnie Vincent. On the 43rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the classic 1986 thrash album from Metallica, "Master Of Puppets." Master Of Puppets was Metallica's 3rd studio album. It made Metallica the leaders of thrash metal and became a landmark heavy metal album. Led by guitarist and vocalist, James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist Kirk Hammett and the late great bassist, Cliff Burton, Metallica grew as a band. Master Of Puppets featured more mature lyrics and songs that would win over their fans and critics without MTV and videos. The album contains some of the greatest songs of Metallica's catalog, including Battery, Master Of Puppets, Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and more. The album is considered a classic thrash album and one of the greatest in heavy metal. Master Of Puppets sold over 6 million copies. On the 4th Episode of Shout It Out Loudcast's sidecast, The Zeppelin Chronicles, our hosts, Tom & Zeus, along with SIOL sidekick Murph and Jay Scott from The Hook Rocks podcast, review the classic 1971 album, "Led Zeppelin IV."  Led Zeppelin IV sometimes called, untitled, Zoso, runes and even 4 symbols is considered to be not only one of Led Zeppelin's greatest achievements, but also music in general. Filled with immortal songs like, Black Dog, Rock And Roll and perhaps the greatest rock song of all time, Stairway To Heaven, Led Zeppelin IV catapulted Led Zeppelin into a superstardom like very few have ever achieved. Following Led Zeppelin III lukewarm reception, the band went to work on the next album in October of 1970. This week Tom & Zeus review the 1980 solo album from former KISS drummer Peter Criss, "Out Of Control." Peter Criss had just left KISS a few months earlier and he quickly released Out Of Control, his 2nd solo album if you count the 1978 KISS solo albums. The album was soft rock with a mix of soul and Peter's signature ballads. Unfortunately the album sold poorly and did not chart. Peter believed he was "blackballed" by Casablanca and KISS. However, the music was once again an enormous departure from KISS music that the KISS army expected. This is the 5th album by KISS members outside of KISS that SIOL has reviewed. As usual they rank the songs and then rank the album and covers against the four previous KISS member albums outside of KISS. On the 42nd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1994 album from Stone Temple Pilots, "Purple." Purple was STP's 2nd album after their smash debut album "Core." Shaking off the critics and the Pearl Jam clone label, Stone Temple Pilots took their sound from Core and added a whole other dynamic to their sound. Led by charismatic lead singer and lyricist, Scott Weiland, STP boasts the amazing musicianship of brother Dean DeLeo on guitar and Robert DeLeo on bass, with dynamic drummer, Eric Kretz on drums. The album is produced by 90's grunge producer extraordinaire, Brendan O'Brien. The album contains some of the greatest songs of the era, including Vasoline, Interstate Love Song and Big Empty. The album is considered a classic grunge/alternaive album and one of the greatest in the 1990's. The album sold over 6 million copies. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 40 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This week Tom & Zeus breakdown KISS' 1977 appearance on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. Don Kirshner was a producer of ABC In Concert. He left and created his own syndicated show, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert. KISS performed on ABC In Concert previously in 1974 so it was natural for them to also go onto Don Kirshner's Rock Concert in 1977. The band performed three videos for songs off of their most recent album, Rock And Roll Over. These were early forms of videos pre-MTV for I Want You, Hard Luck Woman and Love 'Em And Leave 'Em. These performances were with the Spirit of 76 costumes and stage. The band may have been at its greatest height at this time. On the 41st Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & Sonny review the 1988 self titled debut album, "BulletBoys" BulletBoys were led by trio of ex-King Kobra members, guitarist Mick Sweda, bassist Lonnie Vencent and lead singer, Marq Torien. The band added drummer Jimmy D'Anda. The band drew a lot comparison to Van Halen, due to them signing with Warner Brothers, their first album being produced by legendary Van Halen producer, Ted Templeman and the lead singer Marq Torien's style which resembled David Lee Roth. The Van Halen influence along with ACDC was evident as well in the music. The debut album led by singles, Smooth Up In Ya and For The Love Of Money, which were heavily played on MTV pushed the album to gold status. Torien's unique look and style and his amazing voice also brought attention to the band. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous 39 albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This tour was a for the new album, "Lick It Up", which was the first KISS album without makeup. The album also was the one and only album where guitarist Vinnie Vincent is listed as an actual band member. The tour began in Europe and continued in United States and Canada. Despite the new look and a killer album, ticket sales were at the lowest point since KISS' inception, averaging slightly more than 5,000 a night. This week Tom & Zeus review "Spinning Gold" the movie about Casablanca records founder and KISS first record label head, Neil Bogart. Spinning Gold was released March 31, 2023 in movie theaters across the country. Its the touching story of Casablanca records founder Neil Bogart. Neil has always been a huge part of KISStory. Neil was a young succesful record executive when he opened up Casablanca records in 1974. KISS was the first act signed by Neil and Casablanca. Therefore, the movie does have many KISS moments even though its not a movie about KISS. The guys discuss the KISS parts of the movie and breakdown the movie as a whole SIOL style. They breakdown the "Beth" segment as well and that Donna Summer scene. This week Tom & Zeus review the latest Off The Soundboard KISS release, KISS Off The Soundboard Poughkeepsie 1984. This live album was recorded during the Animalize tour which featured a non makeup KISS. This is the 5th Off The Soundboard release by KISS and this one is very unique. It is the first official live album featuring beloved KISS drummer, the late great Eric Carr. This also featured short term KISS member, Mark St. John. Mark only played a couple live shows due to his unique illness. This is supposedly the only soundboard recording of his playing with KISS. He would be replaced again by Bruce Kulick.
