157 // Interviewing Mellow Brown (Blade Runner: Origins) and 2099 News Roundup!31 Aug 202400:42:05

When we heard Mellow Brown, writer of 2021's stupendous Blade Runner: Origins, was going to be at Comic-Con, we knew we needed to talk to him! Along the way, we learned about his newest Titan project: consulting on Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus, a thrilling new arc written by Kianna Shore (with art by Mariano Taibo) you can pick up today from your local comic store or from Titan's website.

There's also been some new news on the Prime series Blade Runner 2099, and we spend some time at the beginning delving into that. These are exciting times to be a Blade Runner fan, and the coming year is going to be one to remember!

156 // Anatomy Of A Scene: Deckard Meets Rachael Again For the First Time01 Aug 202401:25:06

At long last, your hosts and contributing hosts at Shoulder of Orion break down Deckard's recreated meeting with Rachael. There is so much in this scene. From its subtext, to its music and framing, each moment in this loaded scene is pure Blade Runner. Please join Patrick, Micah, Peter from the Midwest and returning guest Ricardo Silvestri as we explore this moment in Blade Runner 2049 and its far reaching implications on the story and maybe the story to come.

149 // On the Nature of Luv27 Dec 202300:56:51

As we close out our sixth year, we thought we'd return to the sort of content that's been our bread and butter since the very beginning: character analysis.

This episode was prompted by a simple question: is Luv really an antagonist? She's murderous, she's frightening, she's chasing our heroes ... but she's also clearly a victim. She's acting within the boundaries of her conditioning and programming. So who's really the "bad guy?"

Jaime, Patrick, and Micah have a great time hashing out these sorts of questions—and the questions within these questions—on this thought-provoking episode.

From all of us at Shoulder of Orion: thank you SO MUCH for your support, your listenership, and your friendship over this past year. Wishing you peace and warmth as 2023 comes to a close.

78 // Tech Spotlight: The Esper20 May 202000:43:25

Enhance...ENHANCE... We've all heard those words in countless films. In this second episode of our Tech Spotlight, highlighting the technology and hardware of the Blade Runner films, Patrick and Dan dive into the design and use of the Esper machine that our disgruntled detective uses to track down the escaped Replicants. The conversation took a few turns we weren't necessarily expecting, and Rutger Hauer even chimes in on what he said was his favorite scene in the 1982 classic.

BONUS EPISODE // FRAME RATE: First Man (2018)16 May 202001:02:50

Damien Chazelle's fourth film, First Man, was undeniably one of 2018's best. The VFX team won the Oscar for their unparalleled work in bringing the Earth and the Moon to life with stunning realism and breathtaking photography. Based on James Hansen's biography, the film takes us beyond the Gemini and Apollo programs' achievements and moves inward, to an intimate portrayal of Armstrong's personal life and family struggles.

Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy's performances are as haunting as they are beautiful, and the quiet, atmospheric style of their portrayal has left us with a film that is certainly one of the best of the decade.

Join Dan, Jaime, and Patrick in our discussion of what we love (and what we don't love) about this incredible cinematic masterpiece.

BONUS EPISODE // FRAME RATE: There Will Be Blood (2007)19 Apr 202000:53:07
Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood (2007) was the rare film that immediately established itself as a classic upon its initial theatrical release. Anchored by an Oscar-winning performance from Daniel Day-Lewis, an experimentally riveting score by Jonny Greenwood, and Robert Elswit’s jaw-dropping cinematography, There Will Be Blood set a new standard in what 21st-century Hollywood was capable of producing.   In this episode of Frame Rate, the guys discuss this darkly wonderful film’s place in cinema history—and its place in their hearts, as well.

BONUS EPISODE // FRAME RATE: Inception (2010)30 Mar 202000:52:47

In Christopher Nolan's 2010 blockbuster, Inception, themes we are familiar with from science fiction are explored in a unique and visually-stunning way.

Winner of four Oscars, with a star-studded cast and incredible performances, as well as one of Hanz Zimmer's best scores (in Dan's opinion), this film asks of us the BIG questions: what is the nature of our reality? Can what we dream be real? If you had unlimited time with your loved ones, what would you build? What would you explore?

Wildly-successful, this film has something for everyone; but while it's easy to watch it as a heist/Bond sci-fi-action movie, that's just scratching the surface. Join Dan, Patrick, and Jaime as they take a deep dive into one of their favorite films.

BONUS EPISODE // FRAME RATE: The Invisible Man (2020)30 Mar 202000:29:23
With a stunning performance by Elisabeth Moss and brilliantly nuanced direction and writing by Leigh Whannell, The Invisible Man was one of 2020’s first breakout hits—even though its box office was severely impacted by the evolving coronavirus pandemic. In this installment of Frame Rate, Jaime and Patrick discuss The Invisible Man's themes, ideas, techniques, and context within contemporary horror/thriller filmmaking.

At the very end of 2019, we lost yet another Blade Runner great: visual futurist, designer, and artist Syd Mead. In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, and Dan pay tribute to the man who was integral to much of the concept design and visual feel of Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner 2049 among many other films. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Mr. Mead, and we offer this episode as a final thank you to a man who has taken us by the hand for most of our lives and turned our collective dreams of the future into a tangible reality that will live on forever.

147 // Blade Runner Goes Metal: Interviewing Matt Motto from Dissona25 Oct 202301:14:23

The Blade Runner universe inspires art of all sorts: visual media, poetry, cosplay, you name it. But the form of media most touched by Blade Runner's influence might just be music. Vangelis' legendary score (complemented beautifully by Wallfisch and Zimmer decades later) conjures an atmosphere that many musicians have sought to reconnect with over the years.

But this often translates to aesthetic choices. Synth-heavy, reverb-laden, soaked with the atmosphere of dark streets and wet neon.

When we heard Dissona, a progressive metal band out of Chicago, was working on a Blade Runner-inspired EP called Dreadfully Distinct, we knew we HAD to speak with them.

More than just attempting to capture the "sound" of Blade Runner—although there's some of that here too—Dissona took a more philosophical approach to the material. The result is three tracks that focus on characters from the films, charting their internal emotional journeys while taking the listener on fantastical journeys through the world of Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.

We highly recommend you listen to the tracks "Prodigal Son" and "Skinjob" before listening to the episode—and make sure you watch their videos as well. You'll hear much of them in the episode itself, but it'll be useful to give everything a listen/viewing before diving in. You can listen to the tracks on streaming services and here, on Bandcamp. The videos are available on YouTube.

The full EP premieres on November 10, so be sure to add it wherever you listen to music!

For more on Dissona, visit dissonaband.com and give them a follow on Facebook!

64 // Time Enough: Remembering Roy Batty Part Two (A 700 Layer Cake Part 13)02 Oct 201900:48:23

In part two of our tribute to Roy Batty, Jaime, Micah and Patrick conclude the emotionally fraught conversation from part one. 60 // A Memory of Past and Future: Exploring Vangelis (A 700 Layer Cake Part 10)06 Aug 201901:09:59

“Music is the most multi-dimensional knowledge we have. It's as specific as nature can be. Any form nature takes contains a specific sound combination. Music is a language. It's a memory of the cosmic system, a memory of past and future. Above all it's science not entertainment.”

― Vangelis

59 // A Belly Full of Killing: Discussing the Theatrical Cut Part 2 (A 700 Layer Cake Part 9)23 Jul 201901:29:43

It was clear from our first deep-dive into the Theatrical Cut that one episode wasn't going to be enough to cover it. In Part 2, Jaime and Patrick are joined by frequent guest Peter and first-time guest Steve for an extended, wide-ranging investigation into Blade Runner as it first greeted the world at large in 1982.

This time around, the team spends a great deal of time looking at historical context—not just the history of the film, but the history of ourselves. Steve, a film/TV professional who fell in love with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in the sixties and saw Blade Runner in the theater, shares his unique perspective with us. We also take time exploring initial critical reactions to the film—and end up finding some kindred spirits in small-market newspapers nearly forty years ago.

The journey of Blade Runner is a crazy, quixotic, beautiful mess. We are so lucky to explore it with all of you.

49 // Everything Is True: Philip K. Dick and the Birth of a Universe (A 700 Layer Cake Part 1)05 Mar 201901:37:57

Welcome to the first installment of our first-ever Shoulder of Orion miniseries: A 700 Layer Cake: The Cult of Blade Runner! Since we'll be spending a great deal of time over the coming months focusing on the first Blade Runner film, we thought it fitting to go back to the very beginning: Philip K. Dick's seminal Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Before there was a global fan community—before there were films, before there were digital paintings and tribute albums and comic books and computer games and fan conventions—there was a little book by a brilliant, troubled man.

Our story—the story of this very podcast—begins with that novel.

Let's start from the beginning.
