When we heard Mellow Brown, writer of 2021's stupendous Blade Runner: Origins, was going to be at Comic-Con, we knew we needed to talk to him! Along the way, we learned about his newest Titan project: consulting on Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus, a thrilling new arc written by Kianna Shore (with art by Mariano Taibo) you can pick up today from your local comic store or from Titan's website.

This episode was prompted by a simple question: is Luv really an antagonist? She's murderous, she's frightening, she's chasing our heroes ... but she's also clearly a victim. She's acting within the boundaries of her conditioning and programming. So who's really the "bad guy?"

Damien Chazelle's fourth film, First Man, was undeniably one of 2018's best. The VFX team won the Oscar for their unparalleled work in bringing the Earth and the Moon to life with stunning realism and breathtaking photography. Based on James Hansen's biography, the film takes us beyond the Gemini and Apollo programs' achievements and moves inward, to an intimate portrayal of Armstrong's personal life and family struggles.

Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy's performances are as haunting as they are beautiful, and the quiet, atmospheric style of their portrayal has left us with a film that is certainly one of the best of the decade.

At the very end of 2019, we lost yet another Blade Runner great: visual futurist, designer, and artist Syd Mead. In this episode, Jaime, Patrick, and Dan pay tribute to the man who was integral to much of the concept design and visual feel of Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, and Blade Runner 2049 among many other films. The Blade Runner universe inspires art of all sorts: visual media, poetry, cosplay, you name it. But the form of media most touched by Blade Runner's influence might just be music. Vangelis' legendary score (complemented beautifully by Wallfisch and Zimmer decades later) conjures an atmosphere that many musicians have sought to reconnect with over the years.

But this often translates to aesthetic choices. Synth-heavy, reverb-laden, soaked with the atmosphere of dark streets and wet neon.

When we heard Dissona, a progressive metal band out of Chicago, was working on a Blade Runner-inspired EP called Dreadfully Distinct, we knew we HAD to speak with them.

More than just attempting to capture the "sound" of Blade Runner—although there's some of that here too—Dissona took a more philosophical approach to the material. The result is three tracks that focus on characters from the films, charting their internal emotional journeys while taking the listener on fantastical journeys through the world of Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.

We highly recommend you listen to the tracks "Prodigal Son" and "Skinjob" before listening to the episode—and make sure you watch their videos as well. You'll hear much of them in the episode itself, but it'll be useful to give everything a listen/viewing before diving in. You can listen to the tracks on streaming services and here, on Bandcamp. With the sudden passing of the beloved Rutger Hauer, we decided it was important to commemorate his life and work, and of course the iconic characters he has portrayed in his acting career. It was clear from our first deep-dive into the Theatrical Cut that one episode wasn't going to be enough to cover it. In Part 2, Jaime and Patrick are joined by frequent guest Peter and first-time guest Steve for an extended, wide-ranging investigation into Blade Runner as it first greeted the world at large in 1982.

This time around, the team spends a great deal of time looking at historical context—not just the history of the film, but the history of ourselves. Steve, a film/TV professional who fell in love with Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in the sixties and saw Blade Runner in the theater, shares his unique perspective with us. We also take time exploring initial critical reactions to the film—and end up finding some kindred spirits in small-market newspapers nearly forty years ago.

The journey of Blade Runner is a crazy, quixotic, beautiful mess. We are so lucky to explore it with all of you.
