The Mixed Race Experience with Nicole Ocran and Emma Slade Edmondson28 Jul 202401:07:00

This week on the podcast, Em and Alex are joined by the hosts of the Mixed Up podcast, Emma Slade Edmondson and Nicole Ocran! Nicole and Emma met back in 2018 and when they started chatting, they realised they had something in common that they hadn't spoken about in depth with even their family before: being mixed-race. After jokingly suggesting that their discussion should be a podcast, they launched the critically acclaimed Mixed Up podcast and have now written a book called The Half of It. In this episode, they discuss the ways in which being mixed-race is misunderstood, why many mixed-race people feel as though they can't comment on race issues, and why no one really discussed identity when they were younger. They also chat about privilege, the complex history of mixed-race people and the stereotypes that are pushed upon them.

Em's Mum: 10-time Ironman and Queen of Having a Go17 Sep 202301:08:36

Today, we share one of our most highly requested episodes. It’s an interview with Em’s Mum! Having favoured smoking and drinking over exercise her entire life, Francie was given the opportunity to partake in an Ironman and said yes… without knowing what it actually was. An Ironman is a gruelling triathlon that consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon. Yep, a 26.2 mile run ON TOP of all that. Francie’s can-do attitude and endless hard work pushed her to compete in 10 Ironmans over the course of her 50s. Francie takes us through her extraordinary journey, how she still experiences imposter syndrome and you will see why Em is her number one fan (soon you will be too)!

The evolution of Vicky Pattison27 Aug 202301:09:39

This week on the pod, Em and Al are joined by the one and only Vicky Pattison! This interview has been a long time coming, and boy, do they cover everything: Geordie Shore, body image, being in the public eye, challenging expectations, egg freezing, success, love and self worth. Vicky’s journey to a happy and healthy life came with huge leaps, many sacrifies, and a whole lot of judgement, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. Her positive energy radiates throughout this episode and it was a joy to have her on the podcast.

Being a good person with Alice Liveing20 Aug 202300:57:19

This week, Em and Alex are joined by personal trainer and OG Instagram influencer Alice Liveing. When Alice started using social media, the support and praise she received from the online world kept her afloat; but soon, her desire for virtual validation had become all-encompassing, and she realised it was preventing her from truly knowing herself. She knew she needed to accept her whole self, and this meant accepting that she wasn’t perfect. She and the girls discuss how little space is given to existing imperfectly online. Alice also shares her heartbreaking experience of living through an abusive relationship. Em's Pregnancy (!!), Hyperemesis and the Awkward to End All Awkwards21 Jul 202401:01:58

In this week's episode, the girls are in their brand new studio ready to discuss what's been happening with Em over the past few months. She's been growing another baby! As you are probably aware from her last pregnancy, Em suffers with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG), a debilitating, chronic condition caused by a reaction to a particular pregnancy hormone which causes severe nausea, vomiting and dehydration and, in Em's case, can last an entire pregnancy. Em details her experience with HG, the internet's reaction to her announcement and the inevitable, horrendous trolls that emerge when she chose to be vulnerable. To top off the conversation, Em shares the awkward to end all awkwards that she's been holding on to for well over a week now...

The truth behind Married at First Sight09 Jul 202300:59:58

TW: Suicide

This week on the podcast, Em and Alex are joined by Married at First Sight UK contestant Gemma Rose Barnes. Gemma wanted the perfect partner to complete her life, and so she signed up to MAFS in the belief that she was going to find just that, even getting a tattoo in honour of this man who she hadn’t met yet. She ended up becoming a controversial figure on MAFS due to her willingness to make crude jokes and openly talk about sex. She shares that her words were edited and taken out of context, and that her new husband’s keenness was edited out all together. Gemma experienced various mental health and addiction struggles, exacerbated due to the show, and had to make a change. Now sober, Gemma shares the reality behind this “reality” TV show, and how we as viewers need to take a more discerning attitude towards it.

EDIT- A Channel 4 Spokesperson said: "Contributor care and wellbeing is of paramount importance and appropriate support is available to contributors before, during and after broadcast. We need to talk about the housing crisis with Kwajo02 Jul 202300:58:38

This week on the podcast, Em and Alex are joined by social housing activist Kwajo Tweneboa. Kwajo grew up in social housing, and his family were housed in inhabitable conditions: unsafe spaces riddled with mould, cockroaches, mice, leaks and damp. Kwajo’s father was diagnosed with cancer and, whilst being nursed in this environment, passed away from his illness. After receiving little to no help in making their home habitable, Kwajo decided enough was enough, and gathered evidence from over 500 tenants that lived on his estate; this enabled them to shame their housing association into finally carrying out the works that were needed. From there, Kwajo has been continuing the fight, shaming landlords and housing associations across the UK into providing safe, sanitary homes for all.

Life after cancer with Georgie Swallow19 Jun 202300:53:11

This week, the girls are joined by creator, cancer survivor and close friend Georgie Swallow. At 26, Georgie was diagnosed with stage 4 Hodgkin Lymphoma. Without any time to think, she had to jump into chemotherapy to save her life. The only way to get through the exhausting and devastating process was to remain positive and power through. Now, after a second diagnosis and treatment, Georgie is living life at her healthiest. However, this doesn’t mean that cancer doesn’t still cause her daily issues. From infertility to gut health issues, Georgie marches through each day, and as the girls say, all while exuding sunshine. The price women pay to be good04 Jun 202301:13:33

This week on the pod, the girls talk to author, podcaster and former chief content officer of goop, Elise Loehnen. Elise has co-written twelve books, five of which have been New York Times bestsellers, and Em and Alex are joined by her to discuss her latest, On Our Best Behaviour: The Price Women Pay to be Good.

Why can women rarely recover from their failures? Why is the patriarchy so devastating to boys and men?

Elise shares her manifesto, which argues that the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride) have been used by the patriarchy to control women throughout our history. This fascinating theory expands on our episode with Jameela Jamil, back in January 2022, in which the girls spoke about why, as a society, we build women up only to tear them down.

Charlie Craggs: ‘Trans rights and women’s rights can co-exist’ 29 May 202301:07:25

In this week’s episode, Em and Al are joined in the studio by Charlie Craggs, a British transgender actress, activist, and author from London. Charlie talks about her recent experience in court, where she was fighting a trans hate crime. She talks about how she was misgendered in court, and how the court handled her case by letting her attacker off, and what message this sends.

From this, Charlie is setting up free self defence classes for trans women, to ensure other trans people feel safe in public. The three discuss activism online and the media’s role in the debate around trans rights.

What is a Saturn return? with Caggie Dunlop14 May 202301:07:30

On this episode, Alex and Em are joined by Caggie Dunlop, who you may recognise from the earliest iteration of Made in Chelsea. Caggie's late twenties were a mixture of confusion and instability, seeing her friends settling down and having babies just as her life seemed to be at its most turbulent. Then she was introduced to the astrological concept of Saturn returns, which made her understand she wasn't alone in her discomfort. Now, with a podcast and a new book dedicated to Saturn returning, Caggie shares her story and this concept with Alex and Em. And it does happen to send Em into a bit of a spin...

This week on the podcast, Em and Alex chat to Marla McEntire. Her pregnancy was not traditional by any stretch, most notably because Marla actually had no idea that she was pregnant. She only found out 40 weeks into her pregnancy, when she went to the bathroom and after pushing, she realised a baby was in the toilet! This is Marla’s baffling, incredible and heart-warming story…

Lorna Luxe on marriage, eating disorder recovery & life on Instagram14 Jul 202401:08:08

This week on the podcast, Em and Alex are joined by OG influencer Lorna Luxe! Lorna's reign on Instagram has long been symbolised by aesthetic perfection, which, as she explains in this conversation, ultimately stems from addictive tendencies. Lorna started as an air hostess, but as her eating disorder began to take over, her ability to work was impacted. Losing the job that was her whole identity meant she had to work out another way to find herself. Lorna talks us through this journey to recovery, all things beauty, ageism, the choice to be child-free and her relationship with Mr Luxe!
