Plugged In: How Shore Power Is Cleaning Up Our Ports

In this episode, we dig into shore power—the system that lets docked ships plug into port power rather than burning fuel on board. This simple switch reduces fuel use, drastically cuts air pollution, and helps port cities enforce anti-idling laws.

Listen to Maria Bos, CEO of Plug, a professional operator focusing on stable, easy-to-use shore power installations. Maria has extensive experience in innovation, digitalisation, and strategy across the financial and renewable energy sectors. Plug is an Eviny-owned shore power company.

Episode 263

vendredi 17 octobre 2025Duration 35:18

Are we walking the talk of clean shipping?

In this episode you will listen to Danielle Southcott, Founder & CEO of the Veer Group, a multi-award-winning clean shipping startup.

With the help of startup angel investors, the Veer Group is ready to build the worlds' first container vessel with no combustion at all. It's all Wind, hydrogen fuel cells, and an electric engine.

Danielle is very passionate about this project. The biggest hurdle has been establishing credibility and cutting through the greenwashing she thinks is happening.

What is your view of what Danielle and I are discussing? Please send me a note at hello@shippingpodcast.com or comment on the website. I am eager to hear your perspective.

Thank you for listening!

254 Dr Therese Canning, Southampton Solent University

Words are powerful

Have you ever been the subject of a dissertation? The first 63 episodes of the Shipping Podcast laid the groundwork for an extensive research project, and now is the time to unveil the results.

It's been eight years since Therese Canning contacted me to discuss her study. She mentioned using the interviews from this platform to explore what individuals in the maritime industry were discussing and who voiced opinions on sustainability.

Since then, Therese has conducted further research and has now been awarded her PhD, following additional studies on the criminalisation of seafarers.

Listen to Therese as she shares her conclusions. This episode is part of the history of the Shipping Podcast's ten years, illustrating how everything has evolved, both in terms of industry trends and how the podcast has transformed into something unique.
What are your takeaways from this episode? I would love to hear from you! hello@shippingpodcast.com

Until next time; over & out.

165 Frank Coles, British-American entrepreneur and maritime lawyer

Episode 165

vendredi 18 juin 2021Duration 59:44

We are approaching June 25th, 2021, and celebrating the Day of the Seafarer, which is a way to recognise the invaluable contribution seafarers make to international trade and the world economy, often at high personal cost to themselves and their families.
In episode 165, you meet Frank Coles, currently on gardening leave from Wallem, and get to listen to his view about a fair future for seafarers, the IMO theme for the 2021 Day of the Seafarer.

Frank is speaking his mind about many things that need to change for the seafarers to have a fair future.
- a clear career path
- getting paid
- getting fed
- getting to go home
- allowed breaks to get some rest also when in port

Frank is an outspoken advocate for the seafarers. Of course, not all of you will agree with him, but at least he is contributing to the conversation that we must have.
What is your view on what Frank has to say? Please let me know.

159 Anthony Day, Blockchain Partner, Global Business Services, IBM Ireland Ltd

Episode 159

vendredi 26 mars 2021Duration 38:39

During the pandemic, we have seen a crew change crises. Seafarers have not been able to travel between the ships that constitute their workplace and their country of residence due to travel restrictions.

High-level meetings have been taking place, aiming to get seafarers designated as "key-workers", which would lead to exemption from specific COVID-related travel restrictions and make it possible for the 200,000 stranded seafarers to become repatriated.

Here is a link to IMOs Q and As about the crew change crises.

Currently, the next step towards normality is vaccination. The key-workers status would move seafarers up the line in the queue.

The next step after that is how to prove vaccination and clearance for Covid-19 through a negative test. One suggestion is a Digital Health Pass, and that is what this episode is addressing.

Meet Anthony Day, working at IBM in Dublin, who focuses on digital health pass and how complicated it can be to get national health authorities to agree on a global standard. Anthony describes how a digital health pass would make the certification easy to show on a mobile device when travelling or entering a sports arena. He explains blockchain technology and gives us insights into the various considerations that have to be considered.

Anthony has his podcast called Blockchain won't save the world if you are interested in the tech behind the digital health pass, blockchain.
