The Fear of Being Seen Explained: How to Overcome It & Share Your Voice28 Apr 202600:59:14

There’s a moment most of us don’t talk about.

The one where you’re about to speak… post… share something that matters—and something inside you says: don’t.

Not because you don’t care. Not because you don’t know enough. But because, somehow, it doesn’t feel safe to be seen.

In this conversation, I sit down with Lyn Delmastro-Thompson to explore what’s really happening beneath that fear.

We go beyond surface-level confidence advice and into the deeper layers—the nervous system responses, the subconscious patterns, and the early experiences that taught us it was safer to stay small.

This isn’t just about visibility in business. It’s about the quiet ways we censor ourselves in everyday life—the thoughts we don’t say, the truths we soften, the parts of us we keep hidden.

And what becomes possible when we begin to feel safe enough… to show up anyway.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re holding back a part of who you are, this episode is an invitation to understand why—and to gently start shifting it.

Because the moment you stop hiding isn’t just brave…it’s where your real impact begins.

How to Reprogram Pain: The Brain–Body Reset You’ve Never Tried07 Nov 202501:02:06
Episode Summary

If you’ve stretched, massaged, and medicated only to have the pain return, this conversation reframes everything. Butch Phelps explains why the brain—not the muscle—is the real throttle on tension, and how brief, repeatable stretches plus gentle pressure and breath can teach the nervous system to feel safe enough to release. We talk shoes, fascia and emotion, why static “hold forever” stretching backfires, and how to build reciprocal trust between mind and body so movement becomes freedom again.

Key Takeaways

  • “You’re not fighting your body; you’re negotiating with your brain.” Muscles are reactive tissue; the brain sets their tone.

  • Short + repeated beats long + forced. 5–6 second holds, repeated ~10x, calm the stretch reflex and build safety.

  • Cause ≠ site. The pain’s location often isn’t the source (e.g., “bad back” driven by tight quads/hip flexors/calves).

  • Animals are models. Stretch a few times daily, not only when you hurt.

  • Shoes shape movement. Built-up heels and narrow toe boxes push us into heel-to-toe gait and stiff ankles; a roomy, minimal shoe helps restore natural mechanics.

  • Fascia stores stories. Emotional release during stretching is common; breath + nonjudgment helps it move through.

Time-Stamped Guide

  • 00:01 Welcome + the “body’s language” frame

  • 01:44 Butch’s story: weight loss, back pain, mentors, and the brain–muscle aha

  • 06:46 “Stretch the mind, not just the muscle”

  • 09:42 Pain lives in the brain: the stretch reflex & safety signaling

  • 11:27 Building reciprocal trust between body and mind

  • 16:58 Chronic pain loops and why the brain looks for pain

  • 19:33 Running again: fear vs. true threat; which muscles to prep

  • 22:54 Evolution mismatch: sitting, joints, synovial fluid, and aging well

  • 28:15 Fuel and movement: the closest thing to a fountain of youth

  • 31:20 Site vs cause; “bad back” that wasn’t

  • 36:05 Quick wins: where to start so you feel hope fast

  • 38:51 Pre/post workout stretching debates—what actually matters

  • 41:45 Yin vs vinyasa: strength, mind, and gentleness

  • 45:26 Fascia & emotions: why tears happen on the table

  • 47:31 DIY: the calf sequence (inside/outside/center)

  • 51:27 Minimal shoes and grounding

  • 54:39 Why heel-to-toe isn’t the design spec

  • 1:02:12 Parting wisdom: drop judgment, learn your body’s signals

Favorite Quotes

  • “Freedom isn’t found in force; it’s found in release.”

  • “The site of pain is rarely the cause of pain.”

  • “Take the judgment out of the thought; your body will soften with it.”

  • 03:10 — Simple > shiny: How explaining the why (e.g., hydration for cognition) beats “quick-fix” serums.

  • 04:04 — Posture matters: Hunching ages your look and affects breathing, reflux, pelvic floor; small tech nudges help.

  • 06:03 — Top non-negotiables:

    • Hydration for joints, skin plumpness, hunger regulation.

  • 31:59 — Starter kit: Facial brush, daily SPF, greens powder, sleep mask, light dumbbells/ankle weights, guided meditation.

  • 37:29 — Reframing aging: “Don’t let the old man in.” Mix with younger folks, pick a passion, avoid health-obsession talk.

  • 41:30 — Gentle behavior change: Wean, don’t white-knuckle. Swap sugary soda, celebrate small wins.

  • 44:26 — Outro & resources.

Mary-Beth’s Core Playbook

  • Hydrate early & often: Aim to sip throughout the day; dehydration = brain fog, snack cravings, dull skin.

  • Protect sleep like a toddler: Consistent wind-down, dark room (sleep mask helps), same wake time.

  • Lift something most days: 8–15 minutes counts. Prioritize legs and hips for balance and bone density.

  • Move incidentally: Park farther, stairs up 1 flight/down 2, walking phone calls, dance while cooking.

  • Posture cues: Wear a gentle reminder device or set hourly “shoulders-back, ribs-down, long-neck” check-ins.

  • Mindset alchemy: Reframe stress, practice tiny gratitude reps, and assume good intent.

  • Boundaries without guilt: “I can’t do X, but I can do Y.” Trade four-hour dinners for a coffee walk.

Quick Wins to Try This Week

  1. Water before 3pm slump: One full glass before reaching for caffeine or sugar.

  2. 8-minute lift: Two dumbbell moves + two bodyweight moves; set a timer and go.

  3. Sun-smart skin: Daily moisturizer or foundation with SPF on face, neck, hands—365 days/year.

  4. Walk-the-errand rule: If it’s within a mile, feet > car.

  5. Bedtime guardrail: Screens off 45 minutes before sleep; use a sleep mask.

Notable Quotes

  • “Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s science.”

  • “Hydration is fabulous, free skincare from the inside out.”

  • “Don’t let the old man in.” — adopted mindset for vibrant aging.

The Imaginary World We Live In — and How to Rewrite It09 Oct 202500:07:13

In this solo reflection, Sammy invites us to question the invisible architecture of modern life. What if the systems we serve—money, borders, success—are all collective fictions? And what if the exhaustion, anxiety, and division we feel are symptoms of forgetting that we wrote the story? Drawing from her own experience of burnout and recovery, she examines how belief systems shape biology—how stress born from illusion can make the body sick, and how awareness can begin to heal it. This episode is a call to rewrite the story of civilization itself: to imagine a world where compassion, integrity, and curiosity are the currencies of progress.

Key Themes -

- The biology of belief and how imaginary systems create real stress responses

- Success as a social construct vs. a state of coherence

- The human tendency to confuse invention for truth

- How collective imagination built both our prisons and our potential

- Reclaiming authorship of the stories that shape society

- Imagining economies of empathy and politics of compassion

⸻ Memorable Quotes

“We turned stories into structures, structures into systems, and then systems into cages. But if we built it, we can rebuild it.”

“We live in an imaginary world — not the problem, but the possibility.”

“The world isn’t broken. It’s the story we’re telling ourselves about it.”

⸻ Science Interlude

From a neurobiological lens, the body doesn’t distinguish between real and imagined threat. A deadline or social judgment activates the same stress circuitry as a predator once did. This means our social constructs — grades, money, reputation — literally imprint physiology. When we change our collective story, we don’t just shift culture; we shift chemistry.

Takeaway Message

Our shared imagination built everything we now call civilization. The same imagination can heal it. The invitation is not to escape reality, but to re-enchant it—with truth, compassion, and conscious creation.

⸻ Call to Reflection

Ask yourself:

What stories have I mistaken for truth?

Which systems am I still serving out of fear?

What new story could I begin living, starting today?

My Dream for the World: Healing, Belonging, and Living in Alignment30 Aug 202500:32:47

In this deeply personal solo episode of Shine In & Out, Samantha Stoltz invites you into her heart’s vision — a dream for a world where science and soul are not separate, but aligned.

This is not a list of hacks or productivity tips. It’s an invitation to imagine a culture where:

  • Our nervous systems are calm, regulated, and resilient.

  • Children grow up knowing how to breathe through stress, nourish themselves, and connect without fear.

  • Workplaces honor rest as much as productivity, so creativity and wellbeing thrive.

  • Communities remember that belonging is biologically necessary — and that connection is the key to healing.

Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, and her own lived experience, Samantha explores how practices like mindfulness, movement, and breathwork can reshape our biology in real time — lowering stress hormones, improving heart rate variability, and reducing inflammation.

But beyond the science, this episode is a call to remember: healing does not happen in isolation. Together, we can create spaces of authenticity, support, and accelerated growth.

✨ This episode is about planting seeds of possibility — for yourself, for your community, and for the world.

  • Why nervous system regulation is the foundation of true health.

  • How community connection impacts biology, longevity, and joy.

  • The three elements that accelerate healing: science, practices, and belonging.

  • A vision for wellness spaces and movements where masks fall away and people meet as they truly are.

  • How your own dream for the world can become part of this shared blueprint for change.

Science Meets Soul Rambles: Your Body Is Not Your Enemy | Learning to Work With Yourself Instead of Against Yourself14 May 202600:10:44

Description:This morning’s ramble turned into something deeper than I expected.

I started by reflecting on effort:how, when we’re young, we often admire natural talent and effortless ability. But as life unfolds and things stop coming easily, something shifts. We begin respecting people not for what comes naturally to them, but for their willingness to keep showing up anyway.

Then the conversation evolved into something much bigger:

our relationship with the body itself.

After pushing myself hard at Rockville this weekend and waking up in pain, I caught an old subconscious thought rising to the surface:

“My body is punishing me.”

And that realization stopped me in my tracks.

Because what if the body is not the enemy? What if symptoms are communication instead of betrayal? What if exhaustion, pain, tension, and burnout are not signs that your body is failing you, but signs that it’s trying to protect you, signal to you, and work with you?

In this episode, I explore:• why effort becomes more admirable with age• the psychology of earning growth• nervous system resistance and burnout• mind-body dualism and self-opposition• why we often treat the body like an obstacle• and how healing may begin when we start relating to our biology as a teammate instead of a machine

Your body is performing miracles for you every second of every day.

Maybe the question is no longer:“How do I force myself harder?”

Maybe the question becomes:“How do I become a better teammate to my own biology?”

science meets soul rambles13 May 202600:37:51

A very real, very unfiltered morning ramble about:

- purpose

- nervous systems

- authenticity

- overthinking

- perfectionism

- community

- growth

- why I think people need each other more than ever

I think I’m done trying to sound “correct” online.

I’d rather sound human.

Love ya.
