You’ve read the Sermon on the Mount. You’ve probably memorized parts of it. But there’s a good chance you’ve been reading it through a lens that strips out everything that made it so powerful to the people who actually heard it.

In this episode, we’re pulling back the curtain on three of the biggest misconceptions surrounding Matthew 5 through 7, starting with the assumption that Yeshua was doing something brand new on that hillside. He wasn’t. He was a first-century Jewish rabbi doing exactly what first-century Jewish rabbis did, except with an authority nobody else could touch.

We’re also going to talk about what Yeshua actually meant when he said he didn’t come to abolish the Torah, because that phrase means something very specific in its original context and most of us have been reading it wrong. And then we’re going to sit with the Beatitudes for a minute, because they are not the inspirational sentiments we’ve turned them into. They are prophetic declarations soaked in the Psalms and the prophets, and once you hear them that way, you won’t be able to unhear it.

Most people skip Leviticus. And honestly? I understand. It’s dense, it’s ancient, and nobody’s Sunday school teacher ever made the burnt offering sound like the thing that would change how you read the New Testament.

But here’s what I need you to know before you hit play: the sacrificial system wasn’t God being demanding. It was God being deliberate. Every single offering He commanded Israel to bring was a word in a language He was building across centuries. Five offerings. Five words. And by the time this episode ends, you’re going to see something at the cross you’ve never seen before.

We’re walking through all five Levitical offerings in today’s episode: the olah, the minchah, the shelamim, the chatat, and the asham. We’re looking at what each one meant, what it communicated, and why God built the whole system before He did what He did in the first century.

And then we get to Isaiah 53, and the prophet drops a single word that should make every student of Leviticus stop cold.

God Didn't Answer Job's Questions. He Did Something Better.

Thirty-eight chapters. That's how long Job waited for God to say something.

And when God finally spoke from the whirlwind, He didn't answer a single one of Job's questions. No explanation for the suffering. No apology for the silence. No theological breakdown of why any of it happened.

Instead, God asked Job about the morning stars. And the sea. And the snow. And the bear and her cubs.

Most people read that as a rebuke. Today I want to make the case that it was something else entirely.

In this episode we're digging into Job 38 and the speech God delivers from the whirlwind, and we're looking at what it actually tells us about who God is. Because the point of the whirlwind speech was never to put Job in his place. It was to show Job something he couldn't see from inside his suffering: that the God who sets boundaries for the sea and counts the clouds had never once looked away.

We'll also look at what God says to Job's friends at the end of the book, and why that moment is one of the most theologically important verses in all of Scripture for anyone who has ever tried to explain suffering with a tidy formula.

This episode retells Judges 6 by reframing Gideon’s “courage” as fear-driven faithfulness: he threshes wheat inside a wine press to hide from seven years of Midianite raids that stripped Israel bare and drove people into caves. An angel calls him “mighty man of valor” while he’s still hiding, and Gideon answers with grief and doubt about God’s absence and his own weakness. God doesn’t argue, but sends him and promises, “I will be with you,” confirming it with fire from a rock. Gideon names the altar Adonai Shalom before any victory, then asks for two fleece signs without rebuke. John 7 at Sukkot: The Water Ceremony Behind “Come and Drink”

Yeshua’s famous invitation in John 7—“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink”—is unpacked in its Sukkot setting, where Jerusalem overflowed with pilgrims, commanded joy, and urgent prayers for rain. The episode explains the temple water libation tradition described in the Mishnah: priests drawing spring-fed water from the pool of Siloam in golden pitchers, pouring it at the altar amid shofars, singing, and all-night celebration (Simchat Beit HaShoevah), linked to Isaiah 12:3 about drawing water from the wells of salvation (Yeshua). With debate over whether John’s “last and greatest day” is the seventh or eighth day, the key claim remains that Yeshua publicly applied the water festival to Himself. “Living water” is shown as flowing spring water imagery fulfilled by the Ruach HaKodesh, and Sukkot is framed as pointing forward to God dwelling with His people.

In this week’s episode, we’re going back to the Jabbok, and we’re bringing the Hebrew with us.

Here’s a taste of what’s inside:

Genesis 32 isn’t a cute perseverance story but a theologically loaded night where Jacob (Yaakov, “heel-grabber”) is left alone at the Jabbok (Yabok) and wrestles a mysterious “man” until dawn, with Hebrew wordplay linking Yaakov, Yabok, and ye’avek (wrestle).

The opponent—described across Scripture as man, angel, and God—dislocates Jacob’s hip, yet Jacob refuses to let go without a blessing and must finally speak his true name. Only then is he renamed Yisrael, because he struggled with God and with men and overcame, embedding struggle into the covenant family’s identity.

Jacob limps at sunrise, and Israel’s later practice of avoiding the hip sinew memorializes the wound. The episode traces this wrestling motif forward to Yeshua’s night of agony in Gethsemane and the enduring reality of blessing and scars together.

God’s Name in Exodus 3: “I Am” or “I Will Be” (Ehyeh) and the Promise of Presence

Diane from She’s So Scripture revisits Exodus 3, arguing that when Moses asks God’s name at the burning bush, God answers with a verb—ehyeh (“to be”)—not a title, revealing Himself through action, presence, and ongoing faithfulness.

She explains why ehyeh can mean both “I Am” and “I Will Be,” and connects God’s self-description to His earlier promise to Moses, “I will be with you,” using the same Hebrew form.

She clarifies the grammatical link between ehyeh and the covenant name YHVH, emphasizing that God’s name is known through His deeds in the Exodus and throughout the Old Testament.

The episode then traces this theme into John’s Gospel, highlighting Jesus’ “I am” language, especially John 8, and concludes that Scripture invites knowing God personally, not merely collecting information.

Diane revisits 1 Kings 19 and her long-held teaching on the “still small voice,” arguing the passage isn’t about God speaking quietly so much as what happens to Elijah after Mount Carmel’s triumph. She traces Elijah’s fear, flight into the wilderness, and request to die, highlighting God’s tender provision of bread, water, and sleep before any explanation. At Horeb/Sinai—possibly “the” cave echoing Exodus 33—she unpacks the Hebrew kol demamah dakah and notes that God asks Elijah the same question twice and receives the same “I alone am left” answer even after the wind, earthquake, fire, and whisper. God then sends Elijah back with new assignments, names Elisha as successor, and corrects his isolation with the preserved 7,000, a detail Paul later uses in Romans 11.
