This year she was the only women, and the 4th ever to complete Hardmoors 200, a race that needs to be completed in 60 hours. She shares her experience in challenging herself with the speed on the 200miles distance, fueling, and sleeping strategy. We also discuss navigating pre-race nerves and self-doubt, building resilience, enjoying these adventures and becoming a running coach.

12: Jen Scotney, Navigating the Unexpected, Resilience and New Horizons17 Apr 202400:36:34

Very happy to welcome Jen Scotney on the podcast today. She is a podcaster, writer, coach, yoga teacher, and mountain leader. She also was a runner and has previously stood on the podium at some of the UK’s toughest ultramarathons, including the 190 mile Northern Traverse race and twice on the 108 winter Montane Spine Challenger. A diagnosis of osteoarthritis that was not related to running, led to two knee replacements, and the end of her running. She now writes and broadcasts exploring how we cope when life doesn’t go as planned.

Thrilled to be joined by Charlotte Fisher today. She started running fairly recently, with the goal to run an ultra and raise money for charity in honor of her aunt. Since, she has found her passion and love for long distance trail running. In May, she was one of the 8th women to finish UTS 100miles, a beautiful race, but very challenging with a high DNF rate. We delve into her experience, some of the best and most challenging days of her life, aiming for the finish rather than the podium when it didn’t go her way, meeting people on route, and seeing northern lights. We also discuss imposter syndrome when being such a ‘new’ runner, as well as commitment and life changes that came with running.

She is an incredible thru hiker and ultra runner that has just made history and set the overall FKT (Fastest Known Time) on the iconic Appalachian Trail in 40 days, 18 hours and 5 minutes.

She tells us more about what she loves about the trail and her motivation to take this on. We also deep dive on how she worked with her crew to find flow state and keep pushing forward knowing they were 120 miles behind at the beginning.

So happy to welcome today’s guest Ida Nilsson to the podcast. She grew up in a family of athletes, where movement and sport were part of life, and fun. From a young age, she embraced track, cross country, and athletics as a career—until an injury forced her to pause and consider different paths. Eventually, the call to move fast came back—and at 35, she stepped into trail running. Ida has since run—and won—some of the most demanding trail races out there, recently placing 6th at the iconic 100-mile Western States, and taking first place at this year’s TransGrancanaria 82km after a thrilling women’s race. We discuss this latest experience, the evolution of competition and her relationship with it, and what she is looking forward to next.

We also talk about what keeps her grounded and motivated, as well as her work with Moon Valley, the company she co-founded.

This year marked the first London 100 event— an ultramarathon designed to help runners experience different sides of the city: hidden trails and famous landmarks.
