Susan Binkley grew up in Tennessee and received a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee.  In addition to working as a professional artist, she owned and operated a horse farm and large boarding operation, developed unique vacation rentals, created a bakery/café, and established a granola manufacturing business.  In 2003, Binkley founded Blue Monarch, a Christ-centered, long-term residential recovery program for women and their children.  Blue Monarch has since become one of the most unique and successful recovery programs in the country with a strong emphasis on teaching women to parent sober and by focusing on the child’s recovery as much as the mom’s.  Since 2003, Blue Monarch has served nearly 1,000 women and children and over 350 children have been reunited with their mothers who had previously lost custody.

Susan authored a collection of her personal Blue Monarch stories, “From My Front Row Seat,” which quickly became an Amazon bestseller in two categories: Inspirational Christianity and Christian Missions & Missionary Work. The stories are raw and authentic combined with surprising humor, considering the heavy subject matter.

Binkley’s awards include Women in American History Award from Daughters of the American Revolution, TIAA Difference Maker, and an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law from the University of the South.  Susan lives with her husband, Clay, on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee overlooking a state park.

After battling drug addiction (opioids, heroin, crack, suboxone) and spinning his wheels trying to get clean for 20 years, Sam Borgia tried to end his life with an overdose. Noelle had filed for divorce (still believing that the Lord would step in!), he lost his job, his health was suffering, and he had lost everything and gave up. This podcast, while being one of the hardest ones I've ever done as far as getting through it without letting my emotions get the best of me, was also the podcast where I was pinching myself that this was happening. Steph is sharing her story, and I have the privilege of sitting here at the table with her while she shares. I don't care who you are; this is never an easy assignment, and I say assignment because that is what it is. God handed it out, and completing it is up to you. I recall that feeling well when I shared my story for the first time. I had no desire to, but I did, having no idea the freedom I would experience on the other side of the telling when I was released of the guilt and shame that kept me quiet for so long. I do not know who will hear Stephanie's story, but I know this. We only tell our hard stories for one purpose: so others can be blessed with the hope that the same miracle awaits them.

I'm not too fond of labels and decided that the Trauma label did not apply to me long ago. That decision came from a place of not understanding what Trauma really is. I thought it was only something that happened to you that met one or more of the following criteria:

• it happened when you were a child
• it was tragic
• you lost someone you loved (I handled that a long time ago 🙄)
• you watched someone you love suffer

We are so quick to disregard what we don't think applies to us, so I tuned out a lot whenever this topic came up. My view of Trauma has been enlightened, and I bet yours will be, too, when you listen to this podcast. 

It's a little bit of Stuart Smalley and a whole lot of Jesus. Why? Because although it's essential to identify the problems in our lives, I would always rather talk about the solution.

My friend Janet joins me today on the podcast and starts by reading you her letter. Her breaking up with alcohol letter is impacting, raw, honest, and from her heart.

What is that “thing” that you regret you did not do sooner? Since this is a podcast about addiction and mostly alcoholism there are two answers I often hear.

I wish I had quit drinking before I actually did

I wish I had joined this group before I tried it on my own again.

This group is Joyful Surrender and in this podcast, you're going to hear what a meeting is all about.  

I get countless unfinished “form” notifications each week about joining Joyful Surrender.  There are five questions you have to answer. 

#1 Are you in Recovery? If yes, what is your sober anniversary? If no, simply answer no and move on to the next question.

#2 Why do you want to be in Joyful Surrender?

#3 Please review the group rules. Do you agree to honor them?

#4 Is your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

AND, this is where I lose you.

#5 Are you willing to talk with an Admin? If yes, follow the link to schedule a call. 

In my estimations only about one in twenty follow through with #5.  It makes no sense to me, but yet it does because I have been there.  You want to take the final step but at the last minute, all the little voices of doubt creep in.  

I'm passionate about Encouraging anyone to join A group, I am not trying to sell Joyful Surrender. I don’t make a profit there isn't a  membership fee the only thing that’s required is a true desire to get sober and use your faith as the biggest tool  To be accountable and to receive encouragement as well as give encouragement that’s why we are sharing this meeting with you

What made us complete step 5 and schedule that phone call? What relapse in a support group looks like? Why are faith-based meetings so important?

Meet Becky!

Tarrah is back with us today. You may remember Tarrah from episode #18 here on the SS podcast when she was celebrating her 90-day hurdle, and NOW, on June 10, Tarrah celebrated one year of sobriety! She shares with us the verse she and her husband focused on the entire day of her one-year mile marker. They went hiking together and made this verse the focus of their day;

Some stories find their turning point in the unlikeliest moment—like a hungover Sunday when a single sermon about confession cuts through the noise. That’s where Stephanie’s path shifted from white-knuckle control to honest surrender, and the difference changed everything.

We walk through her early years in Wisconsin where football and drinking were inseparable, the college chaos that ended in a mandated detox, and the AA meeting that cracked denial. Then comes a quieter chapter and a slow slide back through “sophisticated” wine culture. She describes the hidden labor of moderation, the work events that exposed the gap between her values and her actions, and the shame of representing faith in public while self-destructing in private.
