הֲיוּכַל גֶּבֶר לִזְכּוֹת בַּמִּשְׁפָּט, וְאִם אֵין בְּיָדוֹ מַעַשֹ לְהִצְטַדָּק: זֵרוּי יִחוּמוֹ מִלֵּחָה סְרוּחָה, חָבוּי אָרְבּוֹ בְּקִרְבּוֹ מֵעֵת הִוָּלְדוֹ:
טָמוּן בְּחֻבּוֹ כְרֶשֶׁת לְרַגְלָיו, יְסִיתֵהוּ בְּכָל־יוֹם לְשַׁחַת לְהַפִּילוֹ: כֹּחַ וּגְבוּרָה בַּגּוּף אָיִן לְפָנָיו לַעֲמֹד וּלְהִתְיַצֵּב:
מִיּוֹם עָמְדוֹ עַל־דַּעְתּוֹ, נַפְשׁוֹ יָשִֹים בְּכַפּוֹ לְהָבִיא לַחְמוֹ: שָֹבֵעַ כָּל־יָמָיו כַּעַס וּמַכְאוֹבוֹת, עַד־שׁוּבוֹ לַעֲפָרוֹ לֹא־יִשְׁקֹט:
פְּנֵה אָדוֹן בְּעִצְבוֹן־רוּחַ, צְפֵה בְּשִׁבְרוֹן-לֵב: קָרוֹב אַתָּה לָרְחוֹקִים, רוֹצֶה תְּשׁוּבַת־רְשָׁעִים:
שַׁדַּי, הִמָּצֵא לְדוֹרְשֶׁיךָ, תֹּאמַר הִנֵּנִי לִמְבַקְּשֶׁיךָ: יְבֻשְֹּרוּ סָלַחְתִּי קוֹרְאֵי בִשְׁמֶךָ, צַדֵּק בַּמִּשְׁפָּט עַם־מְיַחֲדֶךָ:
חֲסֹם מְנֻוָּל מִלְּהַרְשִׁיעַ, קְצֹף בְּמַסְטִין מִלְּהַסְטִין. הָקֵם לָנוּ מֵלִיץ־יֹשֶׁר. כֹּפֶר מָצָאתִי תַּשְׁמִיעַ לְשׁוֹבָבִים:
הִשְׁלַכְנוּ עָלֶיךָ יְהָבֵנוּ, נָא אַתָּה תְכַלְכְּלֵנוּ: הֵעָתֵר לָנוּ בִּתְפִלָּתֵנוּ. חֶפְצֵנוּ וּבַקָּשָׁתֵנוּ מַלֵּא בְרַחֲמִים:
בְּךָ תָלִינוּ בִטְחוֹנֵנוּ, רַחֲמֶיךָ מְהֵרָה יְקַדְּמוּנוּ: חָזָק וְאַמִּיץ שִׁמְךָ לֹא־שָׁכָחְנוּ, אָנָּא, לָנֶצַח אַל־תִּשְׁכָּחֵנוּ:

In this piyyut said whenever selichot are recited we ask G-d to answer our prayers just as he
answered the prayers of our Biblical ancestors from Avraham to Mordechai and Esther.
Fascinatingly, for many of those mentioned there is no indication in the text that they actually
prayed.

מִי שֶׁעָנָה לְאַבְרָהָם אָבִֽינוּ בְּהַר הַמּוֹרִיָּה הוּא יַעֲנֵֽנוּ:

Our many sins run the risk of igniting G-d’s anger but if we come together as a people G-d
dwells amongst us despite sins against G-d.

The universal mission of the Jewish people emerges through the story of Avraham Avinu, whose
faith and devotion to G-d became the model upon which Jewish history was built.

אֵיתָן לִמַּד דַּעַת. טֶרֶם לַכֹּל מוּדַעַת: בֵּאֵר שִׁמְךָ לְכָל־בָּאֵי־עוֹלָם. גִּלָּה כָּל־סָתוּם וְנֶעְלָם:

Drawing on the notion that the Ten Days of Repentance were created even before the world
came into being, the poet urges us to take advantage of this special time when our prayers for
forgiveness are more readily accepted.

In this selicha for the eve of Rosh Hashanah we confront the inevitability of death, yet through prayer and tzedakah, we can be amongst the righteous who even in death live on.

סוּפָה וּסְעָרָה יְבַעֲתוּהוּ. חֶבְלֵי מָוֶת יְסוֹבְבוּהוּ: עָרוּם יָצָא מִבֶּטֶן אִמּוֹ. וְעָרוּם יָשׁוּב לְבֵית עוֹלָמוֹ:
פִּתְאֹם יִלָּכֵד בִּמְצוּדָה רָעָה. וְאֵין מִי אוֹתוֹ לְפָדְעָה: צָרָה וְצַלְמָוֶת יִירָשׁ. מִבֵּיתוֹ וּמֵהוֹנוֹ יֻפְרָשׁ:
קָרַב קִצּוֹ וְנֶהְפַּךְ שִֹבְרוֹ. כָּבָה נֵרוֹ וְאָבַד זִכְרוֹ: רִמָּה תּוֹרִישֶׁנּוּ. תּוֹלֵעָה תִּשְׁלְטֶנּוּ:

This selicha challenges us to confront the question, do we truly yearn for G-d and recognize that
it is more important to find Him in the marketplace than in our houses of prayer.

טְפוּלֶיךָ שִׁעֲשַׁעְתָּ כִּילָדִים רַכִּים. יָמִים רַבִּים לְחוּצִים וּדְפוּקִים. כֹּל חָסָרוּ מִטּוּב רֵקִים. לְבָאִים שִׁנֵּיהֶם עָלֵימוֹ חוֹרְקִים:

In this anti-Christian polemic, we ask G-d to punish those who persecuted us for refusing to
replace our G-d with the god of the one who was crucified. The steadfast refusal of the Jewish
people to do so is to our eternal merit.

יֹשֵׁב בְּסֵתֶר עֶלְיוֹן, מָגִנִּי וְצִנָּתִי. צַעֲקָתִי הַקְשִׁיבָה, וְהַאֲזִינָה רִנָּתִי. חַטֵּא אֶת־חַטָּאתִי, קָדוֹשׁ תֵּן תִּקְוָתִי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

צְדָקָה עֲשֵׁה לְעַמֶּךָ, קָדוֹשׁ לְמַעַן שְׁמֶךָ. כִּי פַּסּוּ תְּמִימֶיךָ, מַעֲבִירֵי זַעֲמֶיךָ. וּמַגִּישֵׁי לַחְמֶךָ, לָכֵן עַתָּה בָאתִי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

חַטֹּאת נְעוּרַי תַּצְלִיל, וְיָם יֵהָפְכוּ כְּצָלִיל. וְצֶדֶק זְקוּנִים תַּסְלִיל, וְשַׁוְעַת נְכֵאִים תַּכְלִיל. וְעֵת תְּנַקֵּנִי כְּבַעֲלִיל, מַסְטִינִי אָז יְיֵלִיל. כִּי לִבִּי לְךָ כָּלִיל, עַתָּה הִנֵּה בָאתִי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

חַנּוּן חַי חָנֵּנִי, לְקוֹל זַעֲקִי בִּגְרוֹנִי. בְּשָׁמְעֲךָ תַּעֲנֵנִי, סְלִיחָתְךָ תַּרְבֵּנִי. חַיִּים תִּכְתְּבֵנִי, וְעָנְתָה בִּי צִדְקָתִי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

זֶה אֵלִי הוֹשִׁיעָה, וּזְכֻיּוֹת הַכְרִיעָה. וּמִזְּבוּלְךָ הוֹפִיעָה, חֹן סֹעֲרָה וְסֹעָה. וּמְלָשְׁנִי הַבְלִיעָה, צֹאנְךָ מִלְּהַפְשִׁיעָה. פֶּן אֶרְאֶה בָרָעָה, בְּאָבְדַן מוֹלַדְתִּי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

קַדֵּשׁ שֵׁם קָדְשֶׁךָ, חִלְּלוּ בְּמִקְדָּשֶׁךָ. וְאַהֲרוֹנִים קְדוֹשֶׁיךָ, מַגִּישֵׁי אִשֶּׁיךָ. וּמַה־יַּעֲשׂוּ קְדוֹשֶׁיךָ, כְּפַסּוּ קָדָשֶׁיךָ. שְׁעֵה־נָּא מַקְדִּישֶׁיךָ, כְּפָרִים אִם־שִׁלַּמְתִּי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

יֵרָצוּ עֲבָדֶיךָ, לְמַעַן שֵׁם כְּבוֹדֶךָ. מְיַחֲדֶיךָ מְעִידֶיךָ, כִּי אֵין בִּלְעָדֶיךָ. בַּקֵּשׁ נָא אוֹבְדֶיךָ, הֵן בָּאוּ עָדֶיךָ. כִּי טוֹבִים דֹּדֶיךָ, פָּנֶיךָ בִּקַּשְׁתִּי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:

קוֹלִי יֶעֱרַב נָא, כְּמֵחִים תּוֹךְ צִיּוֹנָה לְטוֹבָה הִפָּנֶה־נָּא, לְהַמְצִיאֵנִי חֲנִינָה. כִּי אֶל־מִי אֶפְנֶה־נָּא, בְּאֵין מַשְׁעֵן וּמַשְׁעֵנָה. לִמְיַחֲלֶיךָ סְלַח־נָא, הַשְׁמִיעֵם סָלַחְתִּי. נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי, וְעַמִּי בְּבַקָּשָׁתִי:
