Welcome to Season 4, Episode 19, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast", the grand finale for Season Four!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you Part Two of the expansive Secondhand Talent interview of legendary Lighting & Production Designer, Founder of E26 Design, Marc Janowitz!!!

Marc Janowitz  has been in the entertainment industry for over 25 years, with a robust catalog of artists, bands, comedians and more with whom he has worked throughout those years. His path to becoming a lighting and production designer was, well - a direct path. When he was eleven years old, his keen technical and artistic ability led him to be enlisted to lead the production and lighting of his school play. The die was cast and the story’s end has not yet been told.

Combining his aesthetic acumen with a practical understanding of production, Marc brings a myriad of diverse skills that guarantees a unique and successful approach to each project.

Marc's passion for design led him to become the Founder of and Chief Designer at E26 Design.  For over a decade, Marc collaborated with the critically-acclaimed and ground-breaking organization Blue Man Group, where he served on the design team for nearly all of their projects and special events worldwide. In New York theater, Marc was involved with numerous downtown and off-Broadway groups including “Camp Wanatachi”, “Kiki Baby”, “Moisty the Snowman” and “Dai”. He also has served as Resident Lighting Designer for the Forbidden Broadway franchise for 12 years, Resident Designer for Theatre by the Blind and Resident Designer for Bridge Club Productions.

Additionally, E26 designs the lighting and production for numerous touring musical artists including: My Morning Jacket, Trey Anastasio Band, The Lumineers, TV on the Radio, Passion Pit, Girl Talk, The Decemberists., and more. Marc also has extensive experience with his so-called “sweet spot” - the one-hour comedy special, including for Adam Sandler, Wanda Sykes, Sarah Silverman, Chris Rock, and, at the time of this taping “Off With His Head” by Hasan Minaj and “Dad Man Walking” with Seth Myers just recently debuted!

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 5, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with Scherre Tucker, aka Shady Business. "Scherre is an independent merch slanger, bassist, stagehand, and positive vibes technician. Since 2011, she has been involved with live music in one capacity or another. From playing bass in bands local to her beloved Tulsa, to traveling with national acts as a merch seller, to running large stages at various independent festivals, Shady has made a dedicated effort to keep herself surrounded by what makes her happy: music and the joy it brings.

In 2014 she moved to Eureka Springs, AR to assist her mentor, the legendary Ma Dank, with day-to-day tasks. Ma’s legacy continues to be a guiding light in Shady’s work ethic and overall outlook on life. These two share a zest for life that is infectious and rare. Although she passed
away in 2020, Ma travels with Shady to every show she attends.

A brief hiatus from music in 2016 saw Scherre protesting for human and water rights at Standing Rock. Never one to sit idly by, she is always on the move, and always working hard to fiercely defend what she believes in; fairness, equality, and joy.

After a difficult year of loss, life-changing surgery, and introspection in 2020, Shady resolved herself to make the most of every moment, and pursue her passion of travel and music. Since then, she has worked full time selling merch on the road with many bands. Most of these bands
are in the bluegrass/folk/roots scene (which is not the type of music you'll typically hear in her headphones). She enjoys seeing new parts of the country, meeting new people, and sharing in the joy that the ever-present music brings her and others. Shady is as sweet as they come, but furiously protective of her people, and she will cut you.

She is a well-oiled machine that runs on sausage biscuits, menthol cigarettes, and postcard hunting.

Has van. Will travel. Available for hire."

*The above description was written by Shady's dear friend Jarrod Starling, frontman of Carrie Nation And The Speakeasy out of Wichita, KS. Check them out at cnsict.com!!!

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 4, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with David Kozin. David is the founder of no sides records no sides records is a Chicago DIY record label started in 1997. Label CEO David Kozin likes refer to it as a "mini-major" label because the vast array of major bands and artists on the roster, coming from many different genres and also many different parts of the United States and abroad. Early releases from the No Sides record label were from Portland Oregon spazz-punk legends Tuman's Water, Detroit Michigan hooch parlor cabaret duo Terror At The Opera, Chicago nu wave of superband Miss High Hell, and Twig Harbor of experimental electronics duo Nautical Almanac.

In 2003, the label released the VGM mixtape "#8" compilation CD, showcasing chiptune and video game music bands and composers from around the world. In 2005, David began full-time studies at Northeastern Illinois University and No Sides records releases started to become more infrequent, less professionally produced, and with many of the regional and national music distributors going out of business in rapid succession at the time, they became much more difficult to obtain outside of Chicago. After years of school, post-grad poverty, near feral insanity, bed bugs, and a book about Ike Turner published in 2018, the label was basically done and what was left was a stone's throw away from the trash heap.

Suddenly, sadly, in January 2022 came the tragic announcement of the death of the frontman of Miss High Heel, and, more famously, To Live And Shave In LA, Tom Smith. When he passed away from cancer, it shook the avant-garde music community and shattered the ice within David and No Sides Records was reborn. By the years end, the label put out 14 releases on cassettes and CDs, which is more releases in one year than any of its 5-year period in its prior history.

Cut to now and the label will be releasing no less than 18 records in 2024,  including albums by: one-man-band performer The Lonesome Organist. Chicago Punk legends Silver Reviews, free-jazz saxophonist Paul Flaherty, classical pianist Charles Joseph Smith and dungeon synth slayer Alkilith. No Sides Records can be found online at their Bandcamp link below:

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the Secondhand Talent interview of juggler and soundboard extraordinaire Tim Dingus!

Juggling, Magic and Comedy, the trio of stage and screen that just keeps giving. Tim “Juggling” Dingus has mastered the art of mixing all three, and with some help from friends, he’s showing the world what exactly a juggler is capable of. Spoiler alert: There isn’t much one can do once they’ve spent most of their time and energy learning to juggle, but hey - it’s fun to watch!

Tim is well prepared for roles both on the stage, and behind the curtain. In Tim's show "Tricks for Friends", enter a world of wonder, merriment and laughter where everyone walks away a part of the experience. This is the experience where you are a part of the show! Alternatively, if you’re on the stage, allow Tim to support your needs as an artist. He has worked in a number of historic venues, and for multiple award winning musical groups.

It's time to light the lights, and turn up the band! He is available to either entertain your audience as a magician or juggler, or enhance their entertainment experience as a live sound engineer. That's right, he's no one trick pony!!!

Welcome to Season 3, Episode 23 of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of us here at Secondhand Talent - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with legendary Grateful Dead photographer Susana Millman. Around 25 years ago, Susana Millman became a Bay Area photographer. In the spirit of her love for bad puns, she dubbed herself “mamarazi,” although she’s certainly more benign than the paparazzi.  Best known for her photography of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead from the mid-1980s on through later incarnations, she’s also spent a significant proportion of her professional life shooting dance (the Mark Morris Dance Group), travel (especially Asian religious architecture), events (the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge) and interiors.

Her photographic intention is to capture the essence of a moment and leave a visually evocative memory of the experience.  She loves the transcendent moments that occur when she and her camera are in rhythm with the subject, whether it is the peak of a dancer’s elevation, or perhaps feeling the intent of the designer in shooting interiors.

Susana spent the better part of the past several years creating and promoting her coffee table-size photography book, Alive with the Dead: A Fly on the Wall with a Camera, which was awarded a medal by the Independent Publishers Association in 2016. The book’s pictures provide an up-close and personal look at the band in its middle age and after, a product of the unusually intimate access to the band’s scene she developed as a friend of Garcia’s — which was why he came to play matchmaker and then walk her down the aisle at her wedding with Dead biographer and publicist Dennis McNally in 1985.

She and Dennis live in San Francisco, where they enjoy time spent with their daughter, Season Korchin, her husband Jono, and their grandsons, Julian and Elias. She is involved with a variety of progressive causes and works with two international programs that support literacy, Caravan to Class in Mali, and 100 schools in Myanmar.

Stormy Chromer has been a mainstay of the Midwest live music scene since its inception in 2014. Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, the band has been steadily touring and amassing fans for nearly a decade. With a focus on musical exploration and creative programming, the band works to bring an engaging, raucous, and mesmerizing live show. Dedicated to the concept of group improvisation, one can expect Stormy Chromer songs to reach far beyond the confines of their composed structures at concerts.

The band has performed alongside heavy hitters such as Aqueous, Mungion, The Werks, The Main Squeeze, Laith Al-Saadi, and Consider the Source. In addition to Stormy Chromer’s headlining tours they have been featured on major festivals and events, including Summer Camp Music Festival, The Werk Out, Cowpie Music Festival, and official Umphrey’s Mcgee afterparties.

Stormy Chromer’s studio debut “Peace of Pizza EP" (2015) was followed by their full-length album, “A Tale of Two Mouths” (2016) and the "Solid Sessions EP" (2018). The band went on to work with acclaimed producer Chris Steinmetz, releasing the fan-favorite “Alucinaré” as a single in 2019. Combined with an explosive live show, Stormy Chromer delivers a one-two punch of riveting performance and powerful songwriting that captivates audiences and keeps them chasing more.

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 15, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the Secondhand Talent interview of live looper and beatboxer extraordinaire, Brian Meslar, a.k.a. "B-Sticky"!!!

This is Brian Meslar, a.k.a. B-Sticky! A beatboxer/looper extraordinaire as well as a true renaissance man of the performing arts.

B-Sticky has been and still is his own lighting, effects, marketing, audio whiz onstage and in-studio, producer, teacher, and agent for 10+ years as he has relentlessly stormed the barricade that is entering the entertainment industry, looking for entry points in every corner. Through all his efforts in the realm of performance and entertainment, he has learned the work and full commitment that goes into every. single. angle.

Where B-Sticky’s efforts have landed him thus far is doing work and making art that has had the most overwhelmingly positive audience responses! Audiobook Narrating/Engineering has become his main line of work, while he has been pouring commitment into his Beatbox/looping music performance. Both have had regular moments of audience members urging B-Sticky to never stop doing what he does. Now- over 150+ audiobooks and countless beatbox performances later… he is finally just starting to feel like he is scraping the surface of mastery.

Even though getting recognition enough to turn the passions into a full time job has been tricky thus far- B-Sticky has not hesitated. With some of his biggest concerts/shows being fully self-orchestrated, he will keep creating performance art and enriching the lives of those who grace him with their attendance, knowing the rest of the world will catch on before too long. Until then, he will curate impeccable vibes and celebrate his art every step of the way!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with ivory-tickler Joe Re of Mungion ( @MungionBand ). Joe Re is the keyboard wizard of the band Mungion, laying down tasty organ riffs and sweet synth leads on top of his bandmates’ funky grooves. He was classically trained before he went to jazz school to major in both jazz studies and music theory/composition. Some of his major influences include Chick Corea, Beethoven, Debussy, and Cory Henry. In addition to Mungion, Joe is an avid piano teacher and tour de force of Secondhand Talent for his band.

Mungion is Justin Reckamp (Guitar/Vocals), Joe Re (Keys/Vocals), Grant Martin (Bass/Vocals) and Jonny Gifford (Drums). Drawing inspiration from a wide array of musical styles, they create a raucous, yet jubilant sound all of their own. Since their inception in Spring of 2015, Mungion is quickly becoming known for their undeniably explosive and charismatic live shows. The Chicago-based four-piece is rooted in their ambitious compositions and improvisational ability.

Known for their whimsical songs and goofy stage antics, Mungion’s joyous presence is a natural extension of its members, making for live performances that are infectiously lighthearted and deeply sincere. Mungion is guaranteed to have you smiling ear to ear and leaving wanting more.

Welcome to Season 4, Episode 16, of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you the Secondhand Talent interview of Mike Palma!

Mike Palma was born and raised in Chicago and has spent the last 2 decades dedicated to a prolific and creative career in music, entertainment and the arts all across the world. Since 2009, Mike has been playing shows, building rad art, and creating music with his ever-expanding network of friends, producers, musicians, and artists.

For the last 23 years, funk music has been Mike's lifeblood. Over the past year in Medellin, Colombia (at the time of this taping) he has been writing and recording his own original album of, as he calls it, "Booty-shakin’ funk with ‘tude". The album release is planned for 2025, to be followed by a live tour.

Mike has performed, recorded, and toured with dozens of Chicago-area groups over the years including: Local Motive, Firago, AfroZep, Stan P Band, EGI, and Shady Grady

Mike's art career abruptly shifted into third gear when he became deeply involved in managing the construction of the effigy for Lakes of Fire in 2014. In 2015, Mike got the call from Anarchitype Productions founder AJ Tarzian to work on large art builds for parties and events. This led to the opportunity to design and build-out the Emporium Arcade Bar "Pop-Up" space in Logan Square, building over 20 themes over the course of a year and half, most notably the Stranger Things pop-up build in August of 2017, which garnered massive attention from the public as well as prominent local and National publications such as: Vice, the Eater, and People Magazine.

Mike continues to work occasionally with Anarchitype Productions as well as other organizations to design/build large-scale experiential, immersive and interactive art installations. Some of Mike's most recent experience includes Kitty Kat Island, a city replica DJ stage with 30-ft laser cat (Love Burn Miami, Feb 2023) and as a principal artist for last month’s flagship Lumenaura Festival (City of Aurora, Oct 2024).

This week we have the pleasure of releasing to you our expansive interview with bass extraordinaire and funk legend FREEKBASS!!!

FREEKBASS?

Freekbass is one of the great bass players. He has graced the cover of Bass Musician Magazine, Bass Guitar Magazine/UK, three times, and has been featured in Bass Player Magazine, several more. He has hosted master classes at “Bass Player Live” in Los Angeles and New York and “The London Bass Guitar Show”. And along with these bass superpowers, Freekbass has a funk music pedigree that is authentic. He has worked alongside funk legends, Bootsy Collins (who gave him his nickname during a studio session) calling Freekbass “The New Spiritual Warrior for the Funk” and keyboard icon, Bernie Worrell, who guested on many of Freekbass’ albums and live projects.

He's shared the stage with Bootsy, Catfish Collins, Buckethead, Corey Glover, Umphery's McGee, Mike Gordon, and Dumpsta Phunk, to mention some highlights, and he's recorded/colaborated with so many talented artists, such as Stefan Lessard (DMB), Billy Sheehan, Mudbone Cooper, Doug Wimbish and Karina Rykman, to name a few.

Freekbass has his own project, Freekbass & The Bump Assembly, touring since 2016 - lead by Freekbass on bass and vocals, featuring drummer, Rico Lewis (previously with George Clinton), Sky White on keys (Foxy Shazam) and vocalists, Sammi Garett (formerly Turkuaz) and Riley Comisar, and guitarist Nate Lewis. Known for their danceable, infectious grooves, this show is nonstop energy. Freekbass also tours solo, recently performing at the final Sacred Rose festival.

Freekbass is also well know for his bass instruction. He has several bass teaching platforms and videos, and has taught master classes at Gerald Veasley's Bass Boot Camp, Bass Player Live and The London Bass Guitar Show, UK.

To date, Freekbass has interviewed Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band), Laura Lee (Khruangbin) and Eddie Roberts (New Master Sounds). The progression was a leap from his monthly feature in Bass Musician Magazine, called "Bass2Bass with Freekbass" in which Freekbass interviews inspirational and relevant bass players.

Freekbass has now segued into the world of streaming live music on TikTok, Twitch and YouTube. Freekbass currently streams live improv original tunes on TikTok, Sunday-Fridays, 10pm EST.

Well here we are, frands - the end of Season Two!!! To close out this banger of a season, Steiner interviews media maven and drum tech for moe. ( @moeperiod ) Anthony "Zee" Donaldson ( @DisruptionNetwork )!!!

From a profile done by Mike Kohli: "If you are even a passing fan of live music in Central New York, chances are you’ve encountered Anthony “Zee” Donaldson. Donaldson has been a fixture on the area’s music scene for over 20 years in just about every capacity one can be involved in the music industry.... He’s affectionately known among the younger musicians as "Uncle Zee" for the support he throws behind the local music scene, especially the up-and-comers. He’s much more than a podcast host. He’s a musician, a promoter, a producer, a business owner and, first and foremost, a true ambassador for Central New York and Utica in particular.

[...] The music industry has been a constant in Donaldson’s life. His grandparents and father were all musicians. In addition to all the other duties he performs, he is also a musician, playing bass in the metal band Street Rock Mafia ( @streetrockmafia2796 )."

This week Steiner and Ducky have the distinct pleasure of interviewing Ellis Godard, who among many other things is a co-founder and the Executive Director of The Mockingbird Foundation ( @mockingbirdfoundation | mbird.org).

The Mockingbird Foundation broadens access and educational opportunities for young people in music and the musical arts.

The Mockingbird Foundation is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 to generate charitable proceeds for music education for children. So far, we’ve distributed over $2.3M through 657 unique grants in all 50 states!

Funds are raised through individual and corporate donations; special events, including wine tastings, golf tournaments, art exhibits, and 5K runs; special projects, including The Phish Companion (the definitive encyclopedia about the band), and Sharin’ in the Groove (a wildly successful two-disc tribute album); unique donation premiums and branded merchandise available from our Store and elsewhere; and through various strategic partnerships, including a portion of LivePhish proceeds as well as third-party benefit events.

The Mockingbird Foundation has no salaries, paid staff, office space, or endowment — thus distributing all possible funds to charity. No director or volunteer benefits financially from the Foundation in any way, and all proceeds from Mockingbird projects are donated to tax-exempt organizations. And since we’re entirely volunteer administrative costs are less than 5% of revenues!

"Please check out Ian Schneller's Chicago School of Guitar Making, a wonderful school whose mission is to provide a solid foundation upon which students from all over the world can commence their luthiery studies, with lectures, demonstrations and hands-on work. Since its debut in 2005, thousands of students have taken classes at the school. The number of new Specimens quickly grew and now Ian has made more than 800 instruments, amps and horn speakers all by hand in his Chicago workshop. 2025 marks Specimen’s 39th anniversary!"

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 8 of "Secondhand Talent: The Podcast"!!! We're so happy we're here and so, so incredibly grateful for all of your love and support along the way. On behalf of all of us here at Secondhand Talent, Steiner, Ducky & Steener - WE LOVE YOU, FRANDS!!!

This week, we have the distinct pleasure of interviewing Kait Gubert of Gubert Photography. In Kait's words:

"I am from a southern Indiana town called Columbus. I relocated to the northwest suburbs of Chicago in 2020 and my business was started shortly after. I am hired to take photos for many things... headshots, weddings/engagements/proposals, family sessions, birthday parties, live music, festivals, random event coverage, you name it.

I guess another thing that you really should know about me is that I have two cats that I will probably talk to you about. I probably go to more than fifty live music shows a year. I love Bob Weir, Phish, Cory Henry, Aretha Franklin, Grover Washington Jr., Noname, Brother Ali, Bella White, Logan Halstead, and so many more. Music is something else that I will probably talk your ear off about...

You can also find me vending at an art fair somewhere in Illinois, Indiana, or Wisconsin.

I sell photos that I mainly take with my film cameras. You know, the type of cameras they had to use before digital cameras were invented (not me tho, I am a 90s baby).

Other things I enjoy:

rollerblading, dancing, thrifting (I try hard as possible to buy second hand), really just taking pictures...I have a problem.

Think we may have something in common? Do you want film included in your session? Lets do it!"

We are so incredibly excited to share with you the second installment of our expansive interview with Arin of Ween Archived ( @weenarchived9697 ). You may recall the name from Steiner's reaction videos over the summer. Ween Archived remixes, remasters, reproduces and brings back to life hidden Ween gems, B-sides and otherwise unknown bits of music that may have otherwise been lost to the annals of time. Thank you for your service, Ween Archived!!!

This interview was a genuine pleasure and Steiner, Ducky & Steener hope you  enjoy it as much as we do!!!
