This volume has been primarily compiled from the tenth English edition of the Memoirs of Mr. Martyn by Rev. John Sargent. The author of this publication has aimed to present the subject in a way that helps young readers form a balanced view of Christian character. Instead of encouraging vague admiration, the goal is to offer the humble missionary as a practical example to follow. To achieve this, the author has intentionally avoided excessive praise, hoping the biography will leave a lasting impression on the reader about the essential need for God's power in leading a holy and useful life. Often, children are subtly taught to see the remarkable examples of piety and zeal recorded in both sacred and ordinary history as exceptions to Christ's teaching, where He instructed His disciples to say—even after fulfilling all commands—"We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were supposed to do." This approach can create an illusion that even mature understanding may not fully dispel, and it may also diminish the glory of the one perfect example of righteousness that has blessed our world. Moreover, it risks nurturing hidden religious pride in the heart of the young Christian, something that usually needs no extra encouragement to hinder the growth of grace. Memoirs of a Christian should be designed more to instruct the living than to praise the dead, and it is surprising that so few works of this nature are available, crafted with evangelical discernment. This principle is especially important in biographies intended for Sunday school students, and it would be a true honor to the institution if the materials endorsed in this area were distinguished by this rare moral clarity.

Paul Kanamori's Life Story: How the Higher Criticism Wrecked a Japanese Christian; and How He Came Back. As a young believer, Kanamori experienced a powerful revival and went on to serve as a missionary to his own people. However, over time, he fell away and became a prodigal. In the book, Kanamori shares how he was led astray by the higher criticism movement—a school of thought that caused him not only to question God’s Word but to doubt its authority, deny its truth.

As I read about his spiritual drift, I was reminded of people I know today. Some now question foundational biblical truths, claiming that Adam and Eve were not real people, or they’ve embraced theistic evolution. Is there hope for them? Kanamori describes his journey through doubt and denial of Scripture, but his story does not conclude in despair. Even after 20 years of grappling with skepticism and theological error, he was brought back to a firm faith and full restoration. This provides me with great encouragement to continue praying for those who have strayed from God's Word—there is always hope for their restoration as well.

Dr. Andrew A. Bonar's biography of this stalwart young man of God has been the standard recognized work on the life of this prince among men. "The Bank of Faith" was originally published in 1889.

The apostle Paul said, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). This verse shows that the Lord has abundant resources to meet our every need. But how do we access this divine provision? By faith. It is a bank of faith, and as believers, we live a life of trust.

As you listen to this book, it might sometimes sound like a series of checkbook entries, listing one provision after another to meet various needs. If you find yourself thinking, “this seems repetitive,” take a moment to marvel at the repetition. This repetition is a glorious reminder of how God consistently provides for believers. Just like the Israelites in the wilderness who found manna each morning, God faithfully provides for us day after day, year after year. This consistent provision is a testament to God’s unwavering character. Even if we aren’t as urgently praying, “give us this day our daily bread,” because of the wealth we have in America, remember that just as God provided for the Israelites, He will also provide for you. So, rejoice in the repetition—it highlights God’s unfailing care and generosity.

On April 2, 2024, Stuart Olyott from Liverpool, England, shared insights on the topic of "How to Not Preach a Boring Sermon" with some of the men at Grace Community Church in San Antonio, Texas. It was during this study that he highly commended this book. These references thus led me to commence a project of reading the 1912 version, revising it, and turning it into an audiobook.

Let me share part of what Stuart shared that night:

I use this book not just to reread it, but I find that if I read a couple of sentences, I suddenly feel that I want to pray. So, I use that as a trigger to pray. Then, after reading a few more sentences, I want to pray again; it moves me to pray...I would like to counsel you to read Power Through Prayer...I think you'll realize that there's far more to preaching than just the act of preaching. Preaching is something done by God through a man.

In retracing the marvelous acts of the Lord recorded in these pages of, “A Thousand Miles of Miracle in China”, I have felt indeed that I am on holy ground. So sacred is the memory of that solemn past that I almost shrink from bringing it to public notice. The only thing that enables me to do it now is the persuasion that the experience we were called to pass through was not for our sakes only, but also “for His Body’s sake, which is the Church.” It seems clearly to be in the will of God that the course of His servants’ “ sufferings” should be “ fully known ” (2 Timothy 3:10 and 11) for the glory of His own Name and the strengthening of “all who will to live godly in Christ Jesus.” 

In this confidence I commit the record, however imperfect, to the blessing of Him Who in all our affliction was Himself afflicted, and the Angel of Whose Presence saved us. “Not unto us, oh Lord, not unto us, but unto Thy Name give glory.”

The history of Christian Missions often overlooks the Arctic regions, such as Greenland. However, I firmly believe that an examination of these pages will support the assertion that near the North Pole, there has been as devoted and heroic a commitment to the cause of the Cross as in the tropical zones of the Equator. While the missionaries there have been fewer and less renowned, they were individuals remarkably devoid of pretense, dedicated to consistently working on the tasks at hand. The true spirit of missionary work burned within them, and they faced incredibly challenging conditions. If patience is a hallmark of a genuine missionary, these individuals were exceptionally endowed with this virtue. In their journey, patience was not just a practice but an embodiment of their character. If one trait stands out in the study of their lives, it is their extraordinary perseverance of heart and purpose, even when, from a human perspective, the situation appeared utterly hopeless. Such individuals undoubtedly deserve to be honored and remembered.

Hans Egede, the principal figure in this present volume, was a man of such stamp and mold.
