We have a hope that is eternal. It was C.S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity who said, "If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world." And that's exactly what the narrative of Scripture is, you know, our hope is not here. Our hope is eternal, and it's in a right relationship with God. That doesn't mean that the here and now is not important. You know, we can care about the environment because we were entrusted as stewards of creation. And that can give a strengthening and an undergirding for caring about the world around us, caring about people. And I think ultimately, these desires that we have for stewardship, for ideas like justice well, those are inherently Christian ideas. That's the air we breathe in the Western Hemisphere because of our Christian heritage. Wes was born in Multan, Pakistan and spent a portion of his childhood in the Middle East. | Trailer | S05 Ep05 | Andrew Bennett and Andrew Stirling | How Well Do Christians Know the Bible? | 24 Oct 2023 | 00:01:06
If you don't know who Jesus Christ is, that means you're not engaging Scripture. And if you're not engaging Scripture, you might come to a false understanding of who Jesus Christ is. Oh, Jesus Christ was a prophet. He was a social justice advocate. No, He's the incarnate Son of God. And that is revealed in Scriptures. And it's through that revelation that we come to know about who He is, the Saviour of the world, the Promised Messiah, the fulfillment of the law, the prophets, and the covenants. But He is also for us, He is our Lord and God and He has changed everything. And it's continuing to change things through the incarnation to the resurrection. And if you don't know those things, first of all, how can you live out your faith as a Christian? And how can you possibly come to understand the nature of the world and the nature of yourself as a human person made in His image and likeness? So, without engaging the Bible, we simply cannot be Christians. Rev. Dr. Andrew Bennett is the Program Director of Faith Communities at Cardus. So, I've followed Jesus now for more than 60 years, and always, there have been a few days life has been too busy to do it, just impossible, but every day. I mean I was reading this morning, and I just love that time every day in the Bible, in the Scriptures. And what's amazing is I read it now, well, more than 60 times, you always, every year see something fresh, that you didn't see before. And you think, my goodness, why didn't I see that? And of course, the simple fact is that life is raising different questions all the time. And you bring those at least in the back of your mind to what you're reading, and you suddenly see again, and again, the incredible relevance of Scripture. I love it. But ultimately, it's based on the assumption that justice is good, yeah or that there is a thing called justice that is driving us to the heart of the gospel of God, who Himself is justice personified. So don't think that in dealing with this situation, you're losing sight of Scripture. You're not. It is about, again, getting back in the Word and seeing what God says about us. And not just taking you know, Galatians 3:27 and 28. There is neither slave nor free, Jew nor Greek, male nor female. A lot of people use that Scripture to say, therefore we should have the conversation. That Scripture's not doing what we think it's doing. It's not. Have a conversation, look back at Scripture. What is the question behind the question? It is a question of justice, and all of our hearts desire for justice is found. Bless the Lord in the God of the Bible. That's where we're coming back to. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? You think, well, I don't feel like that. I'm feeling great right now. But somewhere, someone else is feeling that way and maybe I pray this Psalm, not for myself, but for someone else. And I can enter into their experience or conversely, if I'm feeling, oh, it was a terrible day and I'm, oh I'm so distraught, everything's going wrong! I flip open the page and it's, you know, come into our joy to the Lord, serve the Lord of gladness. Well, I don't feel that way but maybe someone else does and maybe I need to get out of my own self. We implode into ourselves too much. Maybe I should pray for someone else, and not just for myself. So we lose ourselves in the Psalms, and they're better. It's nice when the Psalm expresses what I feel. It's better when it doesn't, because then it stretches me out of my own ego, and that's what we need to do. And I think it was in the middle of that process that I started to realize that like the Israelites sort of collecting their stones and piling them all together, and to what is called an Ebenezer, I think, here I raise mine every day. And so, all these things started to dawn on me that this was a thing, and I hadn't realized that these stones were related, and they needed...then they build up to something. And so, it didn't happen before, it happened during the process of becoming an opera singer. And then, as the career progressed, the talking about it I was sort of forced always to talk about faith and sort of what it meant to me. I mean, it was in a very cursory kind of way, but it was frequently brought up and then maybe that was also contributed to the fact that I realized it was more of a call than I had realized. Ben Heppner is a celebrated Canadian tenor whose career highlights include roles in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House, and La Scala. Ben Heppner's contributions to the world of classical music extend to concert performances, recordings, and collaborations with renowned orchestras and conductors. | Trailer | S05 Ep01 | Philip Yancey | A Best-Selling Author's Search for Grace and Meaning | 03 Oct 2023 | 00:00:59
When you interview people and you do surveys the vast majority say the times I grew most, especially grew most in my faith, those were hard times, difficult times. And if we hang in there with trust and faith, independence and help of others around us later, we can often look back on those, "Oh, that was a time of redeemed pain. I wouldn't wish it on anybody. I wouldn't wish it on myself." But those things that were most difficult for me, become pillars of faith for most people. So, I would say there's some people on radio and television who will promise you that bad things won't happen to you and they're just wrong. You know, bad things do happen. But I call God the great recycler. He takes things that we wish didn't happen and turns them into things that are useful for us. For Philip Yancey, reading offered a window to a different world. So, he devoured books that opened his mind, challenged his upbringing and went against what he had been taught. In doing so, a sense of betrayal began to engulf him. In his words, “I felt I had been lied to. I realized that God had been misrepresented to me. Then cautiously, warily, I returned, circling around the faith to see if it might be true.” Those discoveries about God and more are contained in Philips recent memoir, "Where the Light Fell", where he takes us on a journey from strict fundamentalism to a search for grace and meaning.

In this episode, listen as Ben Heppner (Canadian tenor and broadcaster) shares with Rev. Dr. Andrew Stirling (Ambassador, Canadian Bible Society) about the role of Scripture in his life. Recorded as part of a series entitled The Word for Life: When Scripture Comes Alive, Ben talks about discovering in his early years a view of the Bible as bread, not stone, that gives life, and points you to Jesus. Referring to Joshua 4:9 and 1 Samuel 7, he shares how, in retrospect, he realized that over the years, God helped him to add different elements to his toolkit, including opera. He explains how the church has been foundational in his life and acknowledges that it was in the church that he learned the ropes of being a public singer. He is a 1988 winner of the Metropolitan Opera auditions and received Grammy® Awards in 1998 for his recording of Die Meistersinger on London/Decca records and in 2001 for his recording of Les Troyens with the London Symphony Orchestra on LSO Live. Heppner hosted CBC Radio’s SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE OPERA, featuring the finest opera productions and recordings from around the world from 2013 to 2021, and now hosts CBS Radio's BACKSTAGE, where he shares stories from behind the scenes. Ben Heppner lives in Toronto with his wife. He has three grown children and five grandchildren. | Trailer | S04 Ep09 | Anna Robbins | Finding Our Purpose with the Help of the Scriptures | 08 Aug 2023 | 00:00:59
If we just understood that we can sit with people and talk about it and say: What does the Scripture mean? Rather than informing everybody all the time as to what it means and recognize that's colonizing people. It's saying, "You believe like me, and then you're acceptable", rather than saying, "Here's the man who told me everything I ever did. Come and see." You know, there's the woman at the well she's calling them forward and saying, "Come and see for yourself." She didn't come and say, "Here, now I'm gonna tell you what you have to do." No, she just said to come and see, come and see. And so I think I think there's, a huge opportunity for us still at it. I am optimistic for the church if we could just get a hold of that piece. I think that the opportunity for people to be reintroduced to the God who loves them, is just as powerful as it's ever been at any time in history. Anna has served several churches as an ordained minister of the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. Near the end of her doctoral studies in Wales (PhD 2001), she was appointed to the faculty of the London School of Theology in the UK where she served for 12 years as a teacher and academic leader. In London, Anna was theological consultant to organizations including Theos, Christians in Politics, Tearfund, and the Evangelical Alliance. She served on the council of the Baptist Union of Great Britain and was a British delegate to the Baptist World Alliance. Her research graduates serve in diverse teaching and leadership positions around the world. In 2012, she returned to Nova Scotia with her family, to join the faculty at Acadia Divinity College.

| Trailer | S04 Ep08 | Mayor Dan Carter | Optimism and Light Amidst the Darkness | 02 Aug 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
There is a possibility for redemption and for forgiveness and recovery. And that all of us have been chosen to be here, that we were created, that we were birthed, that we are God's children. And that we all fit within this society one way or another. And that I always say to people, "Please never give up hope." I understand your frustration. I understand your anger. I understand your disappointment. I understand all that. My parents went through that. My sister, my brothers went through it. You know, it took my parents three years till they really believe that I was clean, sober, and I was a different man. And if I wasn't equipped properly, I would have come out of recovery and said, "Well, I'm all clean, like everything's forgiven. Let's move on." Well, it takes a long time to deal with the hurt, the shame and all of the things that you have to make amends with. However, you wouldn’t expect this based on the way his story started out - from the death of his mother when he was an infant to a series of painful childhood events that led to a life of addiction and living on the streets, he was near death before he got clean and sober, finding faith in God along the way. Mayor Carter takes his role as Mayor of Oshawa to heart and feels blessed that he has been given a second term to serve and help people in his community. He is committed to leading in a way that will bring out the best in all of us and be the light that brings hope, optimism, and pride to this great city. In this episode, Mayor Dan Carter shares his amazing personal story, his favourite passages of Scripture, his love for serving the community, and how God has helped him throughout his life.

| Trailer | S04 Ep07 | Cardinal Lacroix | The Bible: An Encounter with Jesus | 27 Jul 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
The Word of God and Christianity is foremost and above all, a relationship, an experience of a relationship with someone. It's an encounter. It's not a book of history, although there's a lot of history. It's not a book of stories, although there are a lot of stories. It's the revelation of a God who so loved the world, that He created it for us. And when it was broken, and when it was going to the...not in a good situation, He so loved the world that He sent His only Son to reveal that love, that mercy so that we could have life and have it abundantly. So that's the love. That's the love of God that we encounter. When you encounter that or are encountered by that love it changes you. | Trailer | S04 Ep06 | Andy Steiger | Finding Answers When Questioning Faith | 18 Jul 2023 | 00:00:59
I think life is messy and it will always be messy, and it'll always be broken. I don't think we'll be able to usher in a utopia on Earth and I think the Bible is quite clear about that. Ultimately, we need Jesus, and our hope isn't found here. It's found in a different kingdom, His kingdom and so that's always important to me. But what we do at AC (Apologetics Canada) that I think is really unique and needed, particularly here in Canada, is to meet people where they're at, and to point them to Jesus. And oftentimes when where we're at is where we're in these ethical challenges, we want to engage with where culture is at, and the questions people are wrestling with. Again, in gentleness and respect, and we want to get at those primary issues that ultimately lead people to Jesus that we are encouraging and arguing provides a solid foundation for those things that we do believe in, such as humanity, such as human value.

Dr. Andy Steiger is the founder and president of Apologetics Canada (AC), dedicated to helping Christian communities grow in their faith and share their hope. Listen as Andy and Lorna discuss this generation of young people - both Christians and non-Christians alike - who have questions and are seeking truth. The challenge in Western culture is communicating the message of Jesus in a way that people can understand and appreciate. Sharing the gospel requires us all to understand and speak the language of culture and address the questions being asked with intellectual honesty, gentleness and respect. | Trailer | S04 Ep05 | Paul Burns | A Tech Executive's Take on Redemptive Technology | 13 Jul 2023 | 00:00:59
I would say God loves technology. You know, He gave Noah a detailed blueprint of a boat, and gave him the plans to build it. You know, like, if that's not technology, I don't know what is. And so I think, God has a heart for tech and I think He inspires technology. You know, a lot of times, it's easy to get fearful of new technology. And you see that a lot now, especially with artificial intelligence, you know...let's look at all the possible negative things that could come from this technology and I don't dispute that. But I would also say that like, you know, how do you think about technology redemptively? And so I, you know, believe there's a massive opportunity for redemptive technology, technology that is sacrificial, that we are using the gifts and skills that God has given us to redeem the broken world around us. It is comfort. It is the true source of joy, of hope, of peace. The Word of God is not just a holy, you know, canon of scriptures, it is a roadmap. It's where we draw our identity from. It is the place of comfort and solace. It's where we can sit at the feet of Jesus, and just feel held and strengthened from God's hand. It's just this incredible...I think I never saw the Word of God like I see it now. It was definitely a sword when I needed it to be a sword when I was fighting and overcoming and, you know, facing a lot of battles but man, it has been this incredible source. This river of comfort for me.

So, what if people when they encountered us, they found not this kind of burdensome, like drudgery, but they found life. They found people asking the question every day: Okay, Spirit of God what are you calling me to do to care for God's world today? I think if people just ask that question every day, it'll probably change. It'll probably...it might start with, let's use ceramic mugs instead of disposables. But I dare say it won't end there. His desire is for people to integrate their spiritual life with their experience of the created world. | Trailer | S04 Ep02 | Cheryl Weber | Turning to Scripture to Dispel Fear, Anxiety and Loneliness | 20 Jun 2023 | 00:00:59
The Holy Spirit is our teacher. I think there is a certain comfort we have to have with not understanding everything and that's okay. That's where faith comes in but I think having people who can walk with you through the Bible, especially when you're starting is super important. But I would just say there's so many ways to do it and stop condemning ourselves for not doing it enough, doing it perfectly, you know, understanding it enough...just the freedom to just be an explorer and, you know, just be a learner, even if you don't understand it, just keep putting it into you. I really do believe the Bible... it says it's sharper than a two-edged sword, that it brings life to us, and I think there's truth about that, that we need to return to because it's just really easy to leave it behind. And then we're thinking things that aren't anything near how God thinks about things, which is completely opposite to how you would naturally think...I think 100%, completely opposite. So yeah, renew our minds. We need to do it. | Trailer | S04 Ep01 | Steve Bell | Building a Bridge from God's Heart to Yours through Scripture & Song | 13 Jun 2023 | 00:00:58
And you don't come to Scripture as something to mine as a...it's not a vein of coal that we can take and make something with. It's not a resource in that sense. It's something we can use for making or creating something to make to our advantage. It is something to be loved, cherished, adored, and nurtured. If we love it, we'll come to know it. And if we do that work in that order, I think the knowledge, the love knowledge that we get from that will really help us be a witness to the very whoness of who God is. And there's two books to pay attention to. There's the book of Scripture, and there's the book of nature. God wrote them both and if we love them, we're gonna get to the whoness of God. And out of that we can become a light in a dark world. Steve Bell consistently plumbs the depths of beauty and truth while maintaining a humble generosity - a robust kindness - that has profoundly impacted the lives of countless individuals. More than a quarter-century since the release of Steve’s first solo album, his accomplishments continue to demonstrate his commitment to excellence and creativity, as well as his marked dedication to the performing arts within Canada and beyond. Steve Bell’s career statistics are striking. To date he has won 2 JUNOS, put out a total of 20 albums which have sold well over 400,000 copies independently. He has performed 2000+ concerts in 15 countries, and lives with his wife Nanci in Winnipeg, Treaty 1 Territory and homeland of the Métis Nation. In this episode, we weave music and story together with a rich conversation about the power of the Bible. We think you’re going to be richly strengthened by his reflections in this episode.

| Trailer | S03 Ep12 | Susan Finlay | What Would Happen if We Prayed Every Day for Elected Officials? | 03 May 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
It's amazing how the Bible just opened. Philippians 4...I mean of all passages. You could not find a better passage. No, you couldn't. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God and the peace of God will guard your heart and mind. And then it goes on. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. And that was so powerful and completely shifted. And I also learned because of the experience I had had the day before, that when you pass on because I was...they told me I was pretty much near death, and it would have been fine. I was so...when you pass on in the Lord there is nothing to fear and when you do not fear death, you don't fear life. You know, it's just, it's the maximum that it is transformative. --- Listen as Susan Finlay (Founder and Executive Director, Nation At Prayer) and Rev. Dr Andrew Stirling (Ambassador, Canadian Bible Society) talk about how the Bible is a vital part of Susan's life in a dynamic and transforming way, and how God inspired her to start Nation at Prayer. Recorded as part of the series, The Word for Life: When Scripture Comes Alive, Susan talks about turning to the Word for wisdom and discernment in her work, praying with parliamentary leaders and how the Word has helped shine a light in some of the darkest moments of her life. Imagine the impact on Canada if every elected official in Canada was prayed for every day of the year? Susan is working to make this a reality - transforming the nation through prayer.

| Trailer | S03 Ep11 | Andrew Williams | Embracing Inclusion and Diversity | 25 Apr 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
So it's a call to discomfort, not a call to comfort and going back to our earlier conversation, often it seems so much of our faith paradigm is not a call to comfort, but it justifies our comfort. It allows us to remain in the same place and it allows us to huddle, and it doesn't call us to bring in other people in discomfort. Matthew 5, I won't read it all but it goes on and on to a point where we're stripped of the comforts, God seeps in and we start looking outwards. And in that outward embrace, we start embracing more people. And it's almost as if your internal engine flips to the way it was meant to be. Before we're trying to suck in satisfaction. All of a sudden we're breathing the life, breathing life into the people and the experiences around us.

| Trailer | S03 Ep10 | Archbishop Angaelos | A View of Scripture from the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of London | 20 Apr 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
What I like to do is to take Scripture and show how applicable it is to our current setting. And people suddenly think, well, actually, we've never read that before because basically what people do is they read Scripture in a box...and it's over there...and it's the Bible that I take off the shelf and read, and then I go and live life, that don't realize that Scripture actually plays into life. And if we look at just the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ, His example, the way He lived, and what He challenges us to, and we see, for almost every situation in our lives, there is some sort of parallel that we can draw inspiration and strength from to be able to live properly and do what is right.

| Trailer | S03 Ep09 | Where Scripture Comes Alive with Pastor Mark Buchanan | 12 Apr 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
I take students to the arrangement of the beginning of Genesis, where in the Hebrew Bible, it doesn't end with the domination of humankind over creation, ruling over dominion. It ends with the Sabbath, the chapter one ends with a Sabbath. So, it's gotten humans resting together. So, it's a very different picture from sort of humans now being released to run around with chainsaws and bulldozers or whatever and rule over the thing. It's rather a picture of coming to this place of resting in the creation, resting in the presence of the Creator, this quietness of spirit. And I think that the Scriptures begin there and then from there lay a foundation around what it is to be lovers and keepers of the earth that God has entrusted to us.

| Trailer | S03 Ep08 | Mike Janzen | The Psalms: Experiencing God's Restorative Power | 29 Mar 2023 | 00:00:59 | |
But once this injury happened, I suddenly was in the dark with nothing but time and I was left alone, sort of with my thoughts. And that wasn't that much fun because when you're left alone without any other stimulus or people around you, you're sort of stuck in this dark place of just yourself and the things that come out of that. And I was desperate. I didn't know how to pray, when I couldn't really even concentrate for more than a few seconds and so I reached out to the Psalms, and there's a lovely little verse in there that says: By day the Lord directs His love. At night, His song is with me. And I began to slowly breathe those words in and out, thinking about all the times in life and in my present circumstances that God's love was with me. And also, in the times at night, in the dark times, in the depressed times, anxious times, how God's love sustains us.
