Deep End The Pool With No Bottom Gets Darker Every Second #review 18 Jan 202600:04:15

/ @sgpreviews Deep End (2020) – The Horror ShortThis is a widely circulated horror short (approx. 5 minutes) directed by Anthony Sellitti. It is effectively a “micro-horror” that plays on a very specific, primal childhood fear: thalassophobia (the fear of deep water) in a suburban setting.Premise: A young boy (played by Cardin Benjamin) wanders into a backyard on a sweltering summer day and finds an abandoned, pristine swimming pool. He jumps in to cool off, but once he goes under, he discovers the “deep end” is not just a few feet deep—it is an infinite, dark abyss with something lurking in it.Key Crew:Director: Anthony SellittiWriters: Anthony Sellitti, Zachary Donohue (Donohue is known for writing The Den)Cinematography: Bernard HuntWhy it stands out: It uses the “Twisted Childhood” trope effectively, turning a safe, nostalgic summer activity into a nightmare. It has no dialogue and relies entirely on visual tension and sound design.2. Potential Confusion: The Superdeep (2020)If you were looking for a full-length creature feature released in 2020, you might be thinking of the Russian sci-fi horror film “The Superdeep” (originally Kolskaya sverkhglubokaya).Premise: A team of scientists goes down the Kola Superdeep Borehole (the deepest man-made hole on Earth) to investigate strange sounds, only to find a massive fungal/parasitic organism threatening to escape.Style: It leans heavily into 1980s-style practical effects and body horror, similar to The Thing.

/ @sgpreviews Don’t Play With Dolls (2026)Director: Alex Magaña (Channel: ACMofficial)‪@acmofficial‬ Release Date: January 16, 2026Platform: YouTubePremise: This is the latest release from Alex Magaña, a director famous for creating viral, “rule-based” horror shorts (e.g., Don’t Look Away, Smiling Woman). His films usually feature a simple, terrifying setup: a character violates the rule in the title (in this case, interacting with a doll they shouldn’t) and faces immediate, jump-scare-heavy consequences from a supernatural entity.Context: Magaña also released a popular short in 2023 simply titled “The Doll”, which had the tagline “Don’t play with dolls...”. The new 2026 film is likely a thematic follow-up or a new story exploring similar fears of automata and cursed objects.CREWWriter. Director. DP. Editor. METHOD | When Method Acting Becomes Dangerous 11 Jan 202600:06:34

Join this channel to get access to perks:

/ @sgpreviews indie short horror film METHOD, written and directed by Tyler Czajkowski.‪@tylercz‬ It gained traction on YouTube (released around late 2024/2025) and is often compared to films like Creep or Good Boy due to its unsettling premise involving roleplay and commitment to a “character.”Film Details: METHODDirector/Writer: Tyler CzajkowskiStarring: Evan Petruzzi (as Matt), Sasha Das (as The Actor)Premise: A dog sitter arrives at a nice home for what appears to be a standard job. However, he finds a list of increasingly bizarre and strict rules regarding the care of the “dog.” As he tries to follow them, he begins to suspect that the animal he is looking after is not a dog at all, but something—or someone—else. The Twist/Theme: The title refers to “Method Acting.” The horror comes from the realization that the “dog” is a human actor so committed to the role that he becomes a physical threat, blurring the line between performance and predatory behavior. Why it fits your radarGiven your interest in indie horror and creature features (or in this case, a human acting like a creature), this film plays on the “uncanny valley” fear of a human behaving with animalistic aggression, similar to the “Twisted Childhood” subgenre where innocent concepts are distorted into something violent.

/ @sgpreviews Slime City Massacre (2010)Director: Greg Lamberson Genre: Sci-Fi / Splatter / Horror-Comedy Runtime: 88 minsThe Premise Decades after the events of the original Slime City (1988), a “dirty bomb” has decimated New York City, turning it into a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Four squatters take over a ruined soup kitchen in the “Slime City” district. In the basement, they find a stash of “Himalayan Yogurt” and a glowing elixir left behind by the cult from the first film. Desperate for food, they consume it—only to be possessed by the spirits of the original cultists. They soon begin melting into colorful slime and must murder the homeless population to maintain their solid forms.Key CastDebbie Rochon as Alice. The indie horror icon takes a lead role here, adding to her extensive resume of “melt movies” and Troma-style productions.Jennifer Bighé as Alexa.Kean Cronin as Cory.Cameos: The film is packed with genre legends, including Lloyd Kaufman (Troma), Roy Frumkes (writer of Street Trash), and Robert Sabin (star of the original Slime City). Why It Fits the Genre“Melt Movie” Revival: This film is a deliberate throwback to the 80s “melt” subgenre (like The Blob or Street Trash). It relies heavily on practical effects—slime, oozing prosthetics, and gross-out gags—rather than CGI.Post-Apocalyptic Camp: It blends the grimy aesthetic of 1980s NYC exploitation films with a futuristic, sci-fi setting, creating a unique “retro-future” look.Connection to Podcast Interest Scott Geiter (Gruesome Hertzogg) is a vocal champion of director Greg Lamberson and the Buffalo, NY horror scene. He has interviewed Lamberson multiple times and frequently cites Slime City Massacre as a prime example of how to do a modern sequel to a cult classic correctly—by ramping up the gore and the camp.

/ @sgpreviews Cruel Will (2014) | The Gruesome Hertzogg PerspectiveThis is a significant find for your current deep dive, specifically because it connects directly to your research on Steve Hanks. While it is often marketed as a psychological horror under the title Cruel Will, you will also find it listed as The Crumbles. It represents a shift from the creature features and slashers we usually discuss. This is “descent into madness” horror, relying on atmosphere rather than jump scares. The Film at a GlanceDirector: Arthur RomeoThe Plot: A young couple (Lily and Paul) tries to move on after a tragic death in the family. As they isolate themselves in their home, Lily’s grip on reality begins to fracture (or “crumble”), and she starts seeing things that may or may not be there. The Hook: Is the house haunted, or is it just guilt?Genre: Psychological Thriller / Drama / Indie Horror.

/ @sgpreviews Devil May Call (2013) | The Gruesome Hertzogg PerspectiveThis film is a perfect example of what Scott Geiter might call “Resume Horror.” The plot is standard, but the cast is absolutely stacked with genre favorites. It’s the kind of movie you pick up not because you care about the story, but because you want to see Michael Myers fight Parker Lewis while a John Waters icon watches. It falls squarely into the “Direct-to-Video All-Stars” category. The Film at a GlanceDirector: Jason CuadradoThe Villain: John (played by Tyler Mane – Rob Zombie’s Michael Myers)The Hero: Sam (played by Corri English), a blind crisis hotline operator. The Support: Corin Nemec (Stargate SG-1, Mansquito) and Traci Lords (Excision, Blade). The Hook: A blind crisis counselor tries to quit her job, but an obsessive frequent caller decides that if he can’t talk to her, no one can. Wolf Creek (2005) | The Australian Outback's Deadliest Predator 03 Jan 202600:06:19

Join this channel to get access to perks:

/ @sgpreviews Wolf Creek: The “True Story” ContextHertzogg loves a movie with real-world grit. Wolf Creek claims to be “based on true events,” but it’s actually a composite of two terrifying Australian cases. Geiter would likely spend a segment breaking this down:Ivan Milat (The Backpacker Murders): In the 90s, Milat picked up hitchhikers and took them into the Belanglo State Forest to torture and kill them. He is the primary inspiration for Mick Taylor’s “hunting” style.Bradley John Murdoch: In 2001, Murdoch ambushed a British couple on a remote highway in the Northern Territory (much closer to the film’s setting). This case provided the specific inspiration for the “car trouble” setup and the mechanic facade.Gruesome Trivia (The Stuff Hertzogg Would Love)The Budget Miracle: The film was made for roughly $1 million AUD. Hertzogg often champions low-budget filmmaking, and this is a prime example of doing a lot with a little. The “night” scenes were often lit by the headlights of the cars because they couldn’t afford big lighting rigs.Improvised Terror: John Jarratt (Mick) stayed in character between takes. He reportedly didn’t bathe for weeks to get that “Outback grime” smell right, alienating the cast to increase the tension. The “Head on a Stick”: The infamous “spine severing” scene (making the victim a “head on a stick”) was based on a rumor about Milat, though it was never proven in court. It remains one of the most disturbing scenes in 2000s horror.
