In November of 1996, I was driving home from a late shift at a machine shop in western Pennsylvania.
It was a little after eleven at night.
My usual route took me along a narrow country road surrounded by miles of woods.
I had driven that road hundreds of times.
Nothing about it had ever frightened me.
Until that night.
About fifteen minutes from home, my headlights caught someone standing beside the road.
A woman in a light gray coat.
She was facing the trees.
Not the road.
There was no parked car nearby.
No driveway.
No house.
And nothing to explain why she was standing there alone.
I slowed down, thinking she might need help.
But she never waved.
Never stepped toward my car.
She barely even looked at me.
So I drove past.
A minute later, I noticed a strange smell inside my car.
Wet leaves.
Then something clicked behind me.
From the back seat.
I checked the rearview mirror.
Nobody was there.
A few seconds later, I heard it again.
Then the rear passenger window began to fog.
Only that window.
I told myself there had to be an ordinary explanation.
I even stopped at a gas station to check the back seat.
It was empty.
Eventually, I made it home.
My wife, Anna, was waiting in the kitchen.
But when I walked inside, she looked confused.
Then she asked me something I'll never forget.
Who was that?
I asked what she meant.
She looked toward the driveway.
The person in the car with you.
I told her I'd been alone.
But Anna insisted someone had been sitting in the back seat.
Directly behind me.
She said it looked like a woman.
And when I asked what the person was wearing, her answer made my blood run cold.
A light gray coat.
I hadn't told Anna about the woman beside the road.
Not one word.
And when we went outside to check the car, I noticed something that made the entire drive feel even more disturbing.
That should have been the end of it.
But months later, something happened on that same stretch of road that neither of us could explain.
And years afterward, I learned that I might not have been the only driver to experience it.
