Mentoring - the power of giving back through a magical relationship 29 Jul 202200:17:03

This episode is about mentoring which I think is much needed in the world today. Many of us will have had incredible mentors who selflessly give up their time and knowledge in order to help others.

I feel it is a way of paying it forward and that both mentors and mentees to help each other grow and learn.

Beyond Ed Peile who I mention in the episode I would like to acknowledge and thank Jon Fowler, Mark Allen, Julian Godlee and my late father for their inimitable ability to mentor, inspire and transform others.

Singing - the healthy hobby?22 Jul 202200:15:52

Singing is something close to my heart and I feel it does not get enough attention for it’s

multiple health benefits.

It is accessible to so many and is an easy thing to take up and enjoy.

In this episode I explore the benefits to almost every body system which singing can confer.

Prejudice and inclusion01 Jul 202200:21:35

*TW* Today’s episode is on a topic which affects us all.

Prejudice, bias and inclusion are all ongoing hot topics which can affect our wellbeing, how we feel about ourselves and our experience of the world.

Here I look at the reasons why it is such a complex area to navigate and not as simple as it should be.

*TW*

This is such a trenchant topic and I wanted to cover it for so many reasons.

Most of us get some kind of brain symptom at times but it is short lived, but that is not the case for many people. Alzheimer’s Disease is the commonest form of dementia affecting over 60% of all dementia sufferers worldwide.

This episode looks at the determinants of brain health and the aetiology of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Drill down, Diary up 10 Jun 202200:13:28

Sometimes in order to get to the underlying reason behind symptoms that may arise from your lifestyle and environment.

It is a way of dissecting an area that may need more focus, for instance: diet, environment, movement, sunlight exposure, sleep, historic infections and your family history.

They are good tools to use if you are not making huge progress with conventional habit changes.

Language and meaning - more important now than ever09 Dec 202100:21:56

Language is important in all walks of life and has changed hugely over the years because

of how humans communicate.

In this episode I look at its importance and its role in health and medicine, nuances in language and how we can try to work out what someone means from what they say.

You can cross reference to my episode on Consultations which overlaps with this nicely and covers the way in which we communicate.

This is an argument that rages on in the world of nutrition and medicine. In this episode I look at what food is, what it does to us in terms of our health and the mechanisms behind it and give you my verdict on whether I consider it to be medicine or not.

Wellbeing - what's it all about?12 Nov 202100:21:50

We know what wellbeing means - or do we?

What does it really mean and how do we acknowledge and make it a priority at work and in our

lives?

One of my friends triggered this episode having been unsure how to acknowledge and accommodate wellbeing at work.

In this episode we look at the determinants of wellbeing and how to take practical steps to improve yours.

Medical Myths - busted and validated29 Oct 202100:14:47

Today I’ll be looking at medical myths. It’s a fascinating area which most of us will be able to relate to.

How many times have you found yourself saying we only use 10% of our brains

or that you should feed a cold and starve a fever?

I’d love to hear your experiences of this via Insta, Twitter, LinkedIn or FB.

Diagnosis (and overdiagnosis) - the challenges and pitfalls 15 Oct 202100:21:50

Today’s episode is about medical diagnosis. It’s a tricky business and

as patients we want to make sure the diagnosis is as accurate as possible without

something being missed or the opposite - the risk of overtreatment.

I look at the role of screening and talk through some of the challenges we face as both patients and

clinicians.

Impostor Syndrome - sound familiar? You are probably not alone01 Oct 202100:19:39

Impostor syndrome affects up to 70% of people and I see it so often that I wanted to look at what it is, where it came from and what we can do about it.

It’s a fascinating phenomenon which once uncovered can lead to self-exploration and changing our thoughts.

R*silience in the modern world - what it really means20 Aug 202100:17:30

What exactly is resilience?

Is it more than being able to recover from adversity or stresses?

It’s a term that has annoyed me in the past so I wanted to get under it’s belly and explore where it came from beyond flexibility and adaptability in thinking or

handling stressful situations.

Mind Body Medicine - a new and old frontier 23 May 202400:17:43

Weight loss drugs - are the new blockbuster medicines really a solution for obesity?16 May 202400:17:03

Obesity, in some instances, is in essence a form of ‘malnutrition’ because of the nature of food consumed and how rates have increased rapidly over the last 40 years.

Race and Racism in Medicine15 Aug 202400:15:32

This is a topic close to my heart and is important to address for patients and medical staff.

Race is a sociological construct and differs from ancestry.

It has a surprising impact in medicine, both in terms of care and outcomes for patients. In addition racism

needs stamping out in the medical profession in all corners.
