DEADLY MESSAGES with Mario Diaz25 Aug 202501:28:04

The mystique and intrigue of the Ouija board is on full display this Monday afternoon. What will its' connection to the spirit world reveal to Mr. Pancake and his guest? More importantly, who, or what, is Dick Pizza?

DEADLY MESSAGES is a 1985 ABC made-for-TV horror film starring Kathleen Beller and Michael Brandon. When main character Laura finds a Ouija board, her roommate decides to use it behind her back to talk to a murder victim that was supposedly killed in their apartment. When this leads to someone beginning to stalk her, they begin to realize that it may be more than just a game...

Sam's guest brought in to handle the heart-shaped planchette with him today is none other than actor, promoter, L.A. club King and long time friend Mario Diaz

MOON OF THE WOLF with Tommy Hobson28 Jul 202501:55:42

Aaaaa-rooooooOOOOOOO! Werewolf-philes and lycanthrope enthusiasts unite as today's Monday Afternoon Movie is all about your favorite furry moon loving creatures of the night.

MOON OF THE WOLF is a 1972 ABC Movie of the Week starring David Janssen, Barbara Rush, and Geoffrey Lewis, father of the lovely Juliette Lewis. Fun fact: The director, Daniel Petrie, is probably best known for his work on A Raisin in the Sun, with the legendary Sidney Poitier.

As per usual, Sam has enlisted the help of an amazingly talented actor friend to break it all down for us. Tommy Hobson, star of Nickelodeon's That Girl Lay Lay and the Fresh Beat Band, as well as the supernatural thriller Ghosts of the Ozarks) was kind enough to join us and share his professional industry takes on the wacky and wild world of werewolves.

LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY with Stacie Ponder27 Aug 202401:56:18

You might think that if anyone was going to follow up the iconic film Rosemary's Baby with further tales of the plucky Woodhouse family, they would do so with the skill and thoughtfulness that made the original so celebrated. Well, you woulnd't be correct, because the 1976 ABC TV movie LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENED TO ROSEMARY'S BABY tosses out the prestiga of the original for the wackadoo kookiness that you'd find in any made-for-TV horror flick of the era. Fortunately for Sam, his guest for the exploration of this sequel-that-should-not-be is none other than Stacie Ponder, of the celebrated Final Girl blog and more podcast episodes about scary stuff than we can count. Was Ruth Gordon justified in returning for this one? Find out!

And if you're a fan of Stacie's appearances on the Evolution of Horror podcast, be sure to check out her new Twin Peaks podcast, The Detective and the Log Lady! (Spoiler: She's the Log Lady.)

SCREAM, PRETTY PEGGY with Andrew Hopf01 Aug 202401:47:40

Have you ever been watching reruns of That Girl and felt like Ted Bessell seemed too villainous to be playing Marlo Thomas’s boyfriend? If yes, then we’ve got the movie for you. Originally airing in 1973, SCREAM, PRETTY PEGGY has Bessell starring opposite Bette Davis and Sian Barbara Allen in a thriller that sure wants to earn the adjective “Hitchcockian.” Sam is joined by Andrew Hopf to discuss whether it earns it.

NIGHT TERROR with Carrie Aizley and Christen Sussin01 Jul 202401:39:42

Also known as Night Drive, this 1974 made-for-TV thriller stars none other than Valerie Harper as a lady motorist pursued by a psychopath. Is it a distaff Duel or an even scarier Crossroads? Here to answer that question are two of Sam's comedy chums, performers Carrie Aizley and Christen Sussin.

FALLEN ANGEL with Margaret Cho27 May 202401:43:26

Warning: This episode (and this TV film) concerns child pornography and might be upsetting for some listeners.

What’s this? A return to the “teen trauma” wave of TV movies? YES! And it’s all thanks to this week’s guest, Margaret Cho, who made the suggestion that Sam look into this real doozy of a telefilm. FALLEN ANGEL stars Melinda Dillon as the mother of a tween who runs afoul of child pornographers. So yeah, this is heavy, but Sam and Margaret treat it like a real-life horror film… because it is.

REVENGE! with Peaches Christ29 Apr 202401:39:29

Will Shelley Winters finally have her revenge on Sam Pancake and the Monday Afternoon Movie?

Now that we're back to the horror genre, Sam has invited iconic filmmaker and confirmed cult leader Peaches Christ into the fold to talk about REVENGE!, the 1971 ABC movie of the week starring Sam's nemesis, Dame Shelley Winters, Bradford Dillman, and Stuart Whitman.

In what very much feels like a precursor to the classic Stephen King story Misery, a vigilante mother will do anything to get revenge against the man who she believes is directly responsible for her daughter's untimely death. Will her plot to destroy him go too far?

Will Peaches' perspective on all things Shelley finally convince Sam to show her some love? Or will Sam's deep and passionate disdain for her just grow stronger with each scene stealing blocking and each passing huff and wheeze?

THE PEOPLE with Alec Mapa29 Jan 202401:31:56

Let the new season of horror begin! Sam Pancake is here in the new year to get back to the Monday Afternoon Movie roots, which is all that is shocking and scary and sometimes ridiculous. He's asked actor and now returning guest Alec Mapa to sit down with him to watch the 1972 film THE PEOPLE, starring William Shatner, Kim Darby, and Diane Varsi.

A school teacher takes a job teaching at a very rural school where she discovers that the locals adhere to very strict rules regarding their society as well as their children. Is there more to this town than isn't easily visible? Is the new school teacher in danger? Will doctor/veterinarian Willam Shatner have to save the day? Will we all have a newly discovered love of the sweet sounds of the harmonica?

Okay, now that that is out of the way... Part two of the Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special has arrived, and it has brought with it not frankincense and myrrh, but definitely two wise men in Sam Pancake and THE legendary Bruce Vilanch. We just had to include him in any conversation revolving around the Star Wars holiday special as he was one of the writers of this "timeless" classic. 😉 Bruce also touches on some of the other greatest hits of his career, such as Mahogany, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special, and a plethora of 1970s and 1980s television variety shows with Donnie and Marie and the Brady Bunch. Also find out what Bruce thinks wookies sound like, and what Paul Lynde loved about Gene Simmons.

THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL with Tom Ford (Part 1)26 Dec 202300:55:57

It wouldn't quite feel like the holidays without a Monday Afternoon Movie holiday special. For that special, why not cover the infamous pinnacle of all holiday variety shows, The Star Wars Holiday Special?! The whole crew is begrudgingly and contractually back to bring a truly forgettable viewing experience to your late 1970's television sets. Mark Hamill is here as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford is back as Han Solo, and everyone's favorite space Mom Carrie Fisher is back as Princess Leia Organa. Unfortunately, they are not the main characters in any way. That title would belong to Lumpy & Itchy, the family of Chewbacca, who spend large portions of the movie grunting away  about Life Day without the assisitance of subtitles. Then, just for fun, toss in a bevy of celebrity guests like Bea Arthur, Harvey Korman, Art Carney, Dihann Carroll, and Jefferson Starship. If you're a Star Wars fan and you've never seen it, you really should at least once... okay, maybe not.

Happy holidays (and Life Day!) from Sam Pancake and everyone at Monday Afternoon Movie & TableCakes! We hope that you got to spend some time away from work and with your loved ones.

Joshua Tonks is back, all the way from England (supposedly) to share his thoughts and quips with all of us. He says he's English, but is he really? Only Sam knows the shocking truth.

AMITYVILLE: THE EVIL ESCAPES with Joshua Tonks (Part 1)31 Oct 202301:13:09

Ok y’all- for my Halloween episode(s) this year, I decided to take us on a trip to that fated Dutch Colonial Mansard-Roofed House of Horror with the Glowing Demonic Window/Eyes. I had never seen the fourth installment and first TVM iteration of the frenetic “Amityville Horror” franchise, 1989’s AMITYVILLE HORROR: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES aka A HIDEOUS GAY LAMP IS KILLING MY FAMILY.

Y’all. Y’all!??! Y’ALL. The good news is that you can watch this jaw-dropper most anywhere: Tubi, Plex, Pluto, FreeVee, AMC+, Roku, YouTube, the CVS app, in the settings dial of a new Whirlpool dryer, if you stare long enough into a slightly spoiled container of macaroni salad from that questionable snack kiosk at the airport. The better news is that it is one of the most ridiculously hilarious, nonsensically kookoo-boots “movies” I’ve ever had the pleasure of covering on the pod. The best news: my guest is the delightful and deeply knowledgeable cutie- smartie Joshua Tonks, who I was a big fan of from my fave scary movie podcasts from the UK, “Evolution of Horror” and “Brain Rot.” Luckily he was here in LA visiting from London this week and I snagged him in person for my 🎃 special! Yeehaw!

After increasingly concerning behavior, including staying in character even when they aren't playing the game, he sneaks out of a party to go on a solo mission to find his long lost brother. His friends follow the clues he's left behind, Scooby Doo style, leading to our climactic finale in the heart of New York City.

MAZES AND MONSTERS with Meika Grimm (Part 1)16 Oct 202301:15:31

You're going to want to bring out the 20 sided dice, blacklights, and Mountain Dew for this one. We're staying in the year 1982, but after a string of teenage wasteland themed episodes, it's time to get back to the show's roots. That right! Horror! Specifically the Tom Hanks led film Mazes and Monsters, also starring Wendy Crewson and Chris Makepeace.

Joining Sam today is TableCakes own Meika Grimm, editor of this very podcast. She has also edited a number of our sister podcasts, including Smart Mouth. She is an L.A. based digital creator, musician, and audio/video engineer.

Our film follows 4 college aged kids from New York who have formed a bond around a fantasy table top board game loosely based on Dungeons & Dragons. When the group decide to take the game into the local caves to add an extra level of excitement to the adventure, it leads to one of them going missing and the rest wondering what is real and what is fantasy. You will definitely want to watch this one, if only for the amazing 80's sweaters on display.

ANGEL DUSTED with Gedde Watanabe (Part 2)28 Aug 202301:42:16

Sam Pancake and the amazing Gedde Watanabe are back for part two of their walkthrough of Angel Dusted, the NBC TV Special starring Jean Stapleton and Arthur Hill.

An affluent family's son begins to have violent outbursts while away at college and they soon discover that he has fallen into drugs, specifically the dangerous new trendy drug called PCP, otherwise known as Angel Dust.

Will parents Betty and Michael be able to reach their son in time to stop his descent into addiction? Will the young, hip Dr. Gideon's newfangled ways convince them to step out of their usual comfort zones to save him?

One thing is for sure, we are going to play a LOT of classic commercials from the era, and we will find out just how sexist advertisements were then.

Part 2 of 2. Look for another episode with Sam next Monday!

This week, Sam is here to help teach us all about the dangers of PCP, through the 1981 NBC Monday Night at the Movies film ANGEL DUSTED, starring Jean Stapleton, Helen Hunt, and Arthur Hill. Why not legendary screen and stage actor Gedde Watanabe (Pretty in Pink, Pacific Overtures, Ronin 47, & Sex Lives of College Girls)?

An affluent family's son begins to have violent outbursts while away at college and they soon discover that he has fallen into drugs, specifically the dangerous new trendy drug called PCP, otherwise known as Angel Dust.

Will they be able to pull him from the depths of his drug induced insanity or will he continue down his violent path until he seriously hurts somebody?

DIARY OF A TEENAGE HITCHHIKER with Naomi Ekperigin — Part One!13 Sep 202201:13:43

It’s super funny how hitchhiking used to be a thing everyone did to get aroun, but once people got it in their heads that it was dangerous and people could die, we stopped. Yet the whole time America also has this whole gun thing, which is emphatically worse and more likely to result in people dying, and we’re like “IDK LOL.” Anyway! This week Sam is joined by returning guest Naomi Ekperigin to discuss the 1979 TV movie DIARY OF A TEENAGE HITCHHIKER, starring Charlene Tilton and recalling a time when we actually warned each other off from dangerous activities. Enjoy!
