A safety walk-through aims to proactively identify risks and take corrective actions before an accident or injury occurs. When you think of a safety walk-through - you might think of one or more people with clipboards meticulously inspecting every square inch of a facility. That can be the case, but making a habit out of looking for potential issues and ways to improve should be a constant habit to adopt. During a safety walk-through, the inspector or the team may look for hazards such as:
The inspector may also review safety procedures, emergency response plans, and workers' training to ensure they are up-to-date and effective. Performing a safety walk-through is crucial in ensuring your workplace is safe and compliant with all applicable regulations. By checking the above items during a safety walk-through, you can identify potential hazards and take corrective actions before an accident or injury occurs. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Safety Clothing Is Essential PPE There is more PPE we could cover, but we've done our best to hit on the primary items. Over the last several weeks, we've covered footwear, gloves, eyewear, ear protection, hard hats, and harnesses. Today we will wrap up (No pun intended) with safety clothing. Safety clothing is critical to personal protective equipment (PPE) in factories and warehouses. These work environments often involve dangerous materials and machinery that can severely threaten workers' health and safety. Therefore, selecting appropriate clothing material and providing sufficient visibility is crucial to ensure maximum protection. Using high-visibility fabric in safety clothing, such as reflective vests, jackets, and pants, can help workers stand out in low-light conditions, making them visible to their co-workers and machinery operators. The choice of fabric is also essential. Safety clothing is dependent upon the activity that's performed. In an area where getting wet is likely, the material might be as simple as raingear. Other activities require durable materials that can withstand hazardous substances and protect workers from cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and chemical exposure. For example, Kevlar and other high-strength materials can prevent scratches and abrasions from sharp tools or machinery. Your safety clothing could range from something simple as a uniform to an all-out Hazmat Suit. In addition to protecting workers, safety clothing also significantly prevents accidents and injuries that may lead to costly medical bills, lost productivity, and lawsuits. Employers should prioritize providing their workers with high-quality safety clothing to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. If you wear what OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recommends, what your facility requires, and what you know will protect you while performing your duties - you'll be on the positive side of safety, and that's precisely where we want you to be! Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Until we meet next week - have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. Why Safety Harnesses Are Essential PPE Over the last several weeks, we've covered several types of essential personal protective equipment (PPE). So far, we've covered footwear, gloves, eyewear, ear protection, and hard hats - and today, we're talking about the importance of wearing safety harnesses. Even though this podcast speaks to warehouse and factory-type settings - any facility where harnesses or other PPE could assist staff in remaining safe is applicable. Safety harnesses can significantly reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities resulting from falls. Here are just a few examples of when safety harnesses should be required:
Safety harnesses are often required by law and vital to workplace safety regulations. Failure to provide safety harnesses or to enforce their use can result in significant legal and financial consequences for employers. It's yet another layer of PPE that helps ensure your facility and staff stay accident-free - and that's precisely why we talk about it. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Hard Hats Are Essential PPE Today on Warehouse Safety Tips - we're continuing our series on Essential PPE. We've covered PPE related to feet, hands, ears, and eyes, and now we will discuss protecting your head. The hard hat is one of the most crucial pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) for this. Workers in factories and warehouses often face head injury hazards such as falling objects, flying debris, bumps or knocks from equipment, and electrical hazards. Wearing a hard hat can significantly reduce the risk of severe or fatal injuries and provide protection. Hard hats are a helmet designed to protect the head from impact and penetration hazards. It consists of a rigid shell made of materials such as plastic, fiberglass, or metal, with a suspension system inside that helps absorb and distribute the force of an impact. Staff can add accessories such as visors, earmuffs, and face shields can also be added for additional protection. Much like gloves, hearing protection, and safety glasses, hard hats can get hot, uncomfortable, or get in the way of your actions. However, it's paramount that you don't remove them while in an area or job requiring them to be worn. Even though accidents can occur at any time, in the moments you have a slight error in judgment, they catch you off guard. Wearing your hard hat will help keep your head and brain protected, assist in your facilities' safety goals, and significantly increase your chances of returning home safely each night. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Hearing Protection Is An Essential PPE In industrial settings such as factories and warehouses, exposure to high noise levels is a common occupational hazard. Prolonged exposure to loud noises can cause irreversible hearing damage, hearing loss, and other related health problems. Hearing protection is a must for employers as part of their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) program. Hearing protection devices (HPDs) such as earplugs, earmuffs, and noise-canceling headphones can reduce noise exposure to a safe level - minimizing the risk of hearing damage. Regulations set forth by agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States suggest and enforce the use of HPDs. Not only is hearing protection essential for protecting workers' health, but it can also improve overall productivity and safety in the workplace. Excessive noise can impair communication and concentration, making it difficult for workers to perform their tasks safely and efficiently. By reducing noise levels, hearing protection can help workers focus on their jobs, improving overall job performance and safety. As with all PPE and safety procedures - proper training of all staff members and unwavering adherence to that training is paramount to its success. We said it last week, and it'll be just as true down the road - "Safety can't exist where safety isn't observed!" Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Safety Gloves Are Essential PPE Personal protective equipment (PPE) is crucial in any workplace where employees are exposed to hazards that may cause injury or illness. Over the last few podcasts, we've mentioned that everyone thinks of PPE as masks and safety glasses - but gloves are also a vital component of PPE. Always find out what your specific facility/position requires - but here are a few examples of Glove Safety to get you started. In warehouses, factories, and facilities where workers handle hazardous materials, operate machinery, or need general protection - gloves protect workers' hands from cuts, punctures, abrasions, chemical exposure, and much more. The gloves needed for this could be made of materials ranging from cotton, leather, Kevlar, or steel mesh to prevent injuries. We mentioned chemical exposure protection (This would also include biological agents). In those cases - gloves could be made of chemical-resistant materials such as nitrile, neoprene, or PVC (They should also be chosen based on the specific hazards of the workplace, such as acids, solvents, or oils). In positions such as food processing, pharmaceutical work, or dealing with the public - where cross-contamination might be prevalent - staff might need latex gloves that are thrown away after one use to ensure product quality and safety. It is important to note that gloves are not a substitute for proper hand hygiene. Workers must wash their hands before and after wearing gloves to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria. And we don't want to sound like a broken record - but the best way to increase your odds of not sustaining an injury, causing contamination, or becoming exposed - is keeping gloves on at all times. PPE can be uncomfortable or make a task more difficult to perform - but if you're required to wear it, there's probably a good reason. Don't be the person that says, "I've removed my gloves a hundred times before, and nothing happened - until today!" Simply put - safety can't exist where safety isn't observed! Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Until we meet next week - have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Safety Footwear is Essential PPE In factories and warehouses, proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of workers. While many people might think of hard hats and safety goggles as the most critical forms of PPE, proper footwear gets overlooked. Wearing the right shoes can prevent slips, trips, and falls, among the most common causes of workplace injuries. In fact, slips, trips, and falls account for a significant percentage of workplace accidents every year. Proper footwear can also protect workers from puncture wounds, electrical hazards, and other types of injuries in these environments. When choosing footwear for a warehouse or factory, it's essential to consider the specific hazards present in the workplace. For example, workers potentially exposed to chemicals should wear shoes resistant to chemical spills. Those who work with heavy machinery or equipment should wear steel-toed boots to protect their feet from crushing injuries. And workers who are on their feet for long periods should choose shoes with good arch support and cushioning to reduce the risk of foot and back pain. Proper footwear is an essential component of PPE in factories and warehouses. Employers should provide their workers with clear guidance on what shoes are appropriate for the job, and workers should take the time to choose footwear that will keep them safe and comfortable on the job. Making footwear a safety priority can help prevent workplace injuries and keep workers healthy and productive. Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Safety Glasses Are Essential PPE Wearing safety glasses is crucial when working in a warehouse or factory environment. There are several potential hazards that can cause eye injuries, such as flying debris, chemicals, dust, and other particles. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), about 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces every day, resulting in an estimated $300 million in medical expenses, lost work time, and worker compensation. Furthermore, OSHA reports that 90% of these eye injuries could have been prevented with proper eye protection, such as safety glasses. These statistics highlight the importance of taking workplace eye safety seriously and implementing proper safety measures, including providing and requiring the use of appropriate eye protection. Eye injuries can range from minor irritations to permanent vision loss, and they can significantly impact an individual's quality of life. In addition to the personal cost, eye injuries also result in lost work time and decreased productivity. So wearing safety glasses can help prevent these types of injuries. It's important to choose the right type of safety glasses for the job, as different tasks require different levels of protection. For example, tasks involving welding or cutting may require a different type of safety glasses than tasks involving chemicals. Be sure to check with your individual facility to find out what safety glasses or eye protection they require. Overall, safety should always be a top priority. Wearing safety glasses is a simple yet effective way to protect your eyes and prevent injuries in the workplace. By prioritizing safety and taking the necessary precautions, workers can stay healthy and productive while on the job. Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Why Is A Workstation Check Important For Lean Manufacturing? A workstation check is an important part of lean manufacturing because it reduces waste, streamlines processes, and enhances safety - which you KNOW we're all about.
Lean manufacturing has many benefits, including (But not limited to):
A workstation check is a process that involves inspecting the equipment and environment at your warehouse or facility. Doing this is important because it helps you identify areas where improvements can be made. If you want to improve your lean manufacturing process, it's important to look at every aspect of it, including how workers use their workstations. A good way to start a workstation check is by ensuring that all of your equipment is in good working order before beginning any tasks on it. This includes checking things like motors and belts and inspecting tools like saw blades or drill bits for damage or wear-and-tear from previous use (or misuse). You should also test machines periodically throughout each shift so that if something does break down unexpectedly during peak production times, there will be enough time for maintenance staff members, such as electricians or mechanics, to address the situation. How to Implement a Workstation Check?
Warehouse workers need to do a workstation check on a regular basis to ensure that their workstations are set up correctly and that they are using the right tools for the job. In order to monitor this process, warehouse managers can use checklists or other forms of tracking systems. They can also use technology such as barcode scanners or RFID tags in order to track what items each employee has in their possession at any given time. When analyzing data collected through these methods, warehouse managers should look out for trends in how often certain items are used by different people or groups within their facility--this will help them determine whether there is anything they can do to improve efficiency by changing things like workflow patterns or equipment usage patterns What are the Benefits of Workstation Checks? Workstation checks are a great way to improve efficiency and quality in the workplace. They also help reduce risk, which is important for any organization.
If you don't do workstation checks, your warehouse workers could waste time and money. Here are some of the pitfalls of not doing workstation checks:
To maximize the effectiveness of your workstation checks, you should consider the following:
As you can see, there are many benefits to doing a workstation check. In addition to improving safety and efficiency, it helps you maintain the highest quality standards. However, the most important thing is that it allows you to identify problems before they become bigger. Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Worker Safety - Managing Stress And Weather Ensuring the safety and well-being of your team is paramount. Stress and weather conditions can significantly impact productivity and safety, so implementing strategies that effectively address these challenges is crucial. 1. Recognize and Manage Stress: Warehouse work is demanding, and stress is often a byproduct of high temperatures, physical labor, and tight deadlines. Make it a priority to recognize these stressors and provide employees with regular breaks, encourage open feedback, and offer access to mental health resources. 2. Adapt to Weather Conditions: Extreme weather can drastically affect warehouse operations and worker safety. Whether dealing with intense heat, biting cold, or high humidity, adjusting your work practices to keep your team safe and efficient is essential. 3. Operational Changes for Weather: To mitigate the impact of extreme weather, consider adjusting shift times to avoid peak temperature periods. Ensuring all equipment is well-maintained and properly functioning is also critical in these conditions. 4. Review and Adjust Clothing Standards: Proper clothing can significantly improve worker comfort and safety. Regularly review and update clothing requirements to match current weather conditions and operational demands. As always - be sure to follow the rules and regulations of your specific facility. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Horseplay and Workplace Accidents: The High Cost of Ignoring Safety Workplace safety should always be a top priority for any organization. Unfortunately, some employees may engage in horseplay, which can put themselves and others at risk of injury. Horseplay can be defined as any activity that is done in jest or playfully that can potentially cause harm or injury. Examples of horseplay can include roughhousing, pushing, and pranks. While horseplay may seem harmless and fun at first, it can lead to serious accidents and injuries. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, horseplay is a contributing factor in over 2.5 million workplace injuries each year. These injuries can range from minor cuts and bruises to more serious injuries like broken bones, concussions, and even fatalities. In addition to the physical harm caused by workplace accidents, there are also financial costs to consider. Workplace injuries can result in lost workdays, medical expenses, and increased insurance premiums. These costs can add up quickly and have a significant impact on the financial health of a business. Furthermore, workplace accidents can also lead to legal consequences. Employers have a legal obligation to provide a safe working environment for their employees, and failure to do so can result in lawsuits and fines. To prevent horseplay and promote workplace safety, employers can take several measures. First and foremost, they should establish clear rules and policies regarding acceptable behavior in the workplace. These policies should be communicated clearly to all employees and enforced consistently. Employers can also provide regular safety training to their employees to ensure that they understand the risks associated with horseplay and other unsafe behaviors. By educating their employees, employers can empower them to make safe choices in the workplace. Finally, employers should encourage their employees to speak up if they see unsafe behavior or horseplay occurring in the workplace. This can create a culture of safety where employees feel comfortable reporting concerns and taking action to prevent accidents. In conclusion, workplace safety should be a top priority for any organization. Horseplay may seem like harmless fun, but it can lead to serious accidents and injuries that can have a significant impact on the financial health of a business. By establishing clear rules and policies, providing regular safety training, and encouraging employees to speak up, employers can promote a culture of safety and prevent workplace accidents caused by horseplay. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Emergency Preparedness Being woke up from a dead sleep to be told your basement is flooding, will wake you up faster than a cup of java. I know this because it happened to yours truly this morning. Bad storms were passing through - and I'd JUST gone downstairs to check the sump pump to make sure everything was OK. IT was. The pipes connected to it WERE NOT! Now, what's usually a quiet place to film, record audio, and do other marketing activities have been taken over by fans, carpet shampoo machines, and chaos. But within that chaos - the trains are still running. Why? That's what businesses and facilities have to do! And what's the best way to do that? Try to expect the unexpected via emergency preparedness. Whether it's where to go in case of a tornado, what to do should someone get injured, or utilizing an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) for someone experiencing cardiac arrest - you need plans in place for how to handle unexpected situations. Emergency preparedness does just that. For the last several weeks - we've been covering 5S. A major part of The 5S Methodology is a constant and never-ending improvement. It's important to do walk-throughs to make sure everything in your facility is running correctly. But it's equally important to imagine potential issues before they happen, and create emergency preparedness plans for those situations. You can't be prepared for every situation that occurs - but for every pre-emptive plan you successfully put in place, that's just one less thing you have to worry about later. The 5S Methodology - Safety We're FINALLY here - the last portion of our coverage on The 5S Methodology! Some people even refer to what we're covering today as The 6S Methodology. But in speaking with Blaine J. Hoffman of The Safety Pro Podcast - we agree that our topic today is part of all the Ss of The 5S Methodology - as opposed to being its own individual S. The S we're speaking of is safety. Here's a quick wrap-up of what we've covered so far.
After each episode of this revisiting of The 5S Methodology - we've done a recap of each S previously covered. Whether it's covering a topic already mentioned or recapping as previously mentioned - we do it to drive home the mindsets that safety ALWAYS has to be top of mind. The moment it's not is when accidents generally occur - and we don't want that to happen with you or within your facility. When safety is combined with the constant and never-ending improvement of an ongoing 5S Methodology Program - morale, organization, productivity, and customer confidence generally go hand-in-hand! Thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Until we meet next week - have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! The 5S Methodology - Straighten If you caught our podcast over the last two weeks, you'd know we started covering The 5S Methodology. We covered the intro to 5S and the first "S" - Sort. As it applies to 5S, sorting involves going through your work areas and facility and determining what's essential and non-essential. This week, we will cover the next "S" - Straighten. Straightening - as it pertains to 5S - involves making everything essential quickly and efficiently accessible. In addition – it allows for a system of always knowing where those essential items are, who’s using them, and where they go when no longer needed. Another phrase for this step is, Set In Order. So, in addition to what was mentioned above – it also entails making sure items are organized by priority of use. Following this step allows you to keep your tools available to those that need them when they need them the most. Next week, we'll discuss the next "S" of The 5S Methodology - Shine. Until then - thank you for being part of another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. Think about THAT (Maybe even THOSE) drawer, closet, or room where you put all your extra stuff. Almost everyone has one. Now imagine trying to be productive with clutter like that around. It's very difficult to stay organized in a disorganized area. That's where the first "S" of The 5S Methodology comes in. The "S" we're talking about is Sort. Sorting - as it applies to The 5S Methodology - is going through your work areas and facility and determining what's essential and non-essential. Sounds simple. Much like everything in our lives - it's easy to do and not to do. However, this simple streamlining allows you and your co-workers to perform tasks with the needed items. Nothing else gets in the way. And by doing so - enhances the potential of operating at a peak performance level. Next week, we'll discuss the next "S" of The 5S Methodology - Straighten. The reasons for this are simple. There are only so many tips and procedures to share - and many of them bear repeating. The 5S Methodology is one of those topics. If you were to list things that would make a facility run as smoothly as possible - the following items would certainly be on it:
Henry Ford had a method around 1920 called "Can Do" - which stood for Cleaning up, Arranging, Neatness, Discipline, and Ongoing improvement. The 5S Methodology we know today was developed in Japan after a team from Toyota visited Ford in the 50s - and is widely considered to be the base component of Lean Manufacturing today. The S's that make up the 5S Methodology are:

If you're a seasoned Podcast Listener, this podcast will be different from most you listen to. It's based on exactly what the name implies - Warehouse Safety Tips. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Make Safety A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) Have you ever heard the initials SOP? It stands for Standard Operating Procedure. An SOP is a physical and/or digital document that outlines every step that needs to be taken to perform a specific task. If written correctly - someone that has never done the task should be able to follow the steps to complete it properly. Implementing such procedures allows for tasks to be completed within quality standards. In a perfect world - these should be living documents that are constantly updated and improved upon within 5S Methodology standards. So how does safety integrate into this? If the facility you're working in is safety-minded and utilizing SOPs, safety procedures are probably already written into your tasks. If your facility isn't doing this - it needs to start! In addition to training individuals how to do particular tasks - SOPs significantly increase quality control, efficiency, and profitability. Things all facilities should be striving for! We hope you join us next week for another episode of Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to management and staff. It's almost impossible to go 10 steps without seeing Safety Tape, Angles, Signs, and/or products. These items show us how to be safe and avoid danger in the workplace. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Today is the first episode of season four of our podcast! Get A Grip On Safety At the time of this episode, a major winter storm is gripping (No pun intended) a large portion of the country. Certain Safety Topics get recycled several times throughout the year. Our topic today is one of those - primarily because slips and falls account for hundreds of fatalities, THOUSANDS of missed days, and countless OSHA Violations. As with most unsafe situations in the workplace – most of these situations could have been avoided. That's why we talk about it over and over. We've covered several situations in the past that lead to slips and falls - but today, we're going to discuss a specific product to prevent help prevent it. That product is Anti-Slip Traction Tape - offered by one of our sponsors, Mighty Line. Its diamond pattern surface provides extra traction and safety in even the hardest areas to navigate. Almost every facility has areas notorious for being slick due to rain, ice, and snow. Coupling a product like the TAC Anti-Slip Traction Tape with mats, regular maintenance, and safety training is a great way to prevent slips and falls. All the information mentioned today is great - but keeping it front of mind is better! Hopefully, bringing it to your attention throughout the year does that! Thank you for being part of our 4th Year of Warehouse Safety Tips! We'll see you next week with another great tip! Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. If you've ever been to or worked in a warehouse - you know just how important safety is to management and staff. | S3 Ep156: Warehouse Safety Tips | Episode 156 | Celebrate Safety | 14 Dec 2022 | 00:04:16
Celebrate Safety In today's podcast, we'll discuss why you celebrate safety. So - stay tuned. You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. Celebrate Safety Today is an exciting day for Warehouse Safety Tips! It's our 3rd Anniversary of bringing safety tips and information to you and your facility! When it comes to this anniversary and celebrating safety - there are a lot of takeaways we'd like you to consider. The first is consistency. We've been fortunate to bring you this podcast for the last 156 weeks without fail. Did situations arise that could have broken that streak? Of course! But when you commit to a weekly podcast - that's what you deliver. Adherence to safety has to have the same sort of unwavering consistency. You cannot take part in it when you feel like it. It has to be front of mind at all times. Next is repetition. If you watch, read, or listen to our podcast and posts long enough - you're going to notice topics you've heard previously mentioned. Even though new safety tips and procedures are constantly being created - some things will always be sound advice. Keep this saying in mind. "Repetition Is The Mother Of Skill." It means - the longer you do something, the better you'll get at it. Just make sure you apply it correctly. You can do the wrong thing repeatedly as well. Last - but certainly not least - is recognizing and celebrating safety. I had an undercover job many years ago, examining and reporting to management. Although I was supposed to report things like drug use, sabotage, and other harmful activities - I also reported positive activities I witnessed. There were employees and contractors doing things above and beyond their duties that would have gone wholly unrecognized had I not reported it. Having a "Days Since An Accident" Sign is good - but taking the time to reinforce good safety behaviors is better. If you're management or a Safety Coordinator - take the time to regularly walk your facility in search of things being done correctly - and be sure to point it out. Doing so not only allows for recognition - but also allows you to see things that can be improved upon. As we embark on our 4th Year of bringing you safety tips - we hope you embrace safety in every facet of your day-to-day life! We are excited to see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. | S3 Ep155: Warehouse Safety Tips | Episode 155 | Don't Assume Safety | 07 Dec 2022 | 00:03:08
Don't Assume Safety In today's podcast, we'll discuss why you shouldn't assume safety. So - stay tuned. You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. Don't Assume Safety I attended a college work co-op opportunity dinner with my son last night. During the presentation, the speaker pointed out the differences in safety over the years. In the past - they placed cages around manufacturing equipment. Today - light curtains have replaced most of the cages. When these beams are broken - the machinery they protect will immediately alarm, slow down, and/or shut down (Depending on what's been programmed). Or at least they SHOULD. Safety Protocols such as the above-mentioned light curtains are excellent - and it's likely they're trustworthy 99.99% of the time. However - it's that margin of error we ALWAYS want you to keep front of mind. Don't assume safety! We've covered this before and will cover it again. Attention to safety has to be 100%! How often have you heard someone at a facility say, "We've done that a hundred times before, and nothing happened!" Murphy's Law states, "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." We don't want you going about your day paranoid of danger. Instead - we want you to perform your duties in a way that you know you've done everything possible to make your job and facility safe. We are excited to see you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week, and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Safety Is ALWAYS Required Several years ago, a friend worked as a large home improvement chain manager. It would be great if everyone at a facility got along, but that doesn't always happen. He and another manager had an ongoing feud until it ended one afternoon. How? He was let go from his position because, in a hurried moment, he forgot to put on a safety harness. Normally - this would have been a "Don't let it happen again!" moment. But the person that witnessed him doing it was the manager he was feuding with. There are numerous lessons to be had in this, but the ones we want you to remember most are these.

And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Reporting Accidents In The Workplace What is accident reporting - and more importantly, what's a correct incident reporting procedure? Simply put, accident reporting is just what the name implies. Whether it affects property, persons, or both - all accidents need to be reported. Employers must provide a detailed list of what to do when an accident occurs in the workplace. This list should include what steps to take immediately, who to notify and how to contact emergency personnel. The correct incident reporting procedure may vary from workplace to workplace, but all staff should always follow these steps.
It's important to report accidents in the workplace because every accident can have a lasting impact on your company and its employees. Because of this, it is crucial to identify weaknesses in practices or processes, prevent them from happening again, and educate everyone involved. If you'd like to know more about OSHA Accident Reports - visit the OSHA Accident Report Search at: https://www.osha.gov/pls/imis/accidentsearch.search. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Hazardous Energy Safety Hazardous Energy can release in several ways, including rotating parts, moving parts, pressure on equipment, and the action of electromagnetic fields. It's essential to know how to protect yourself from these real dangers. The sudden release of stored energy in equipment and machinery can result in everything from injury to death. Proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) Procedures can prevent hazardous energy releases. Lockout/Tagout is a program that uses mechanical means to prevent unexpected startup of machinery or equipment. These procedures can help prevent hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries annually. In addition to a Lockout/Tagout Program - take extra time to account for everyone in your area, look and listen for people within your work area, and never assume you're good to start a machine until you've double and triple-checked that it's safe to do so. You might think taking the extra time to do so isn't needed - but it's much better than shutting down entirely due to an injury or death. Focus on the tasks that consistently improve productivity, production, and most importantly, safety - and you'll always be on the right track! We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! PPE Safety As we come to what appears to be the end of the Covid Pandemic - public mask requirements have all but gone away. However - in facilities where masks are part of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) Safety Procedures, the need to wear them is still very much needed. And it may not be your facility making the decision. OSHA (The Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Guidelines may require that your facility wear certain PPE. In addition to masks and respirators you wear to protect your breathing - don't forget these other important items to complete your PPE Safety. Safety Glasses to protect your sight.Ear Plugs and Ear Muffs to protect your hearing. Hard Hats to protect your head. Gloves to protect your hands. Steel Toed Boots to protect your feet. Braces to protect your back. Harnesses to protect you from falls. More PPE Safety Items may be required at your facility, but this list should get you well on your way. We've said this before, but it bears repeating. Remember - your health and safety are your bosses regarding PPE Safety. You're only fooling yourself if you think you're getting away with something by not wearing it. It only takes a moment of not wearing PPE to introduce issues, injuries, and death in the worst-case scenarios. Don't roll the dice when it comes to your health and safety. You can find the show notes to each episode, links to the information mentioned on the podcast, the social media platforms we're on, and anything else related to the podcast at WarehouseSafetyTips.com. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Safety Culture Have you ever heard the term 'Culture'? As it pertains to your facility - it's the behaviors and procedures observed regularly (Or the 'norm'). The late Tony Hsieh - Founder of the shoe company Zappos - knew culture inside and out. So much so - Zappos would publish an annual Culture Book and make it available to the public. Tony and the Zappos Management would give a bonus to people that didn't like their job (And/or do it within their culture) to leave. In addition - they'd help that person find a new job that did suit them. Imagine striving for that sort of culture in your workplace! How do you look at Safety? Do you view it as something you must do when management is looking - or as a culture? Hopefully, it's the latter! When you view safety as a culture, you take pride in it, seek to improve it, and know your facility doesn't operate correctly without it. An engaged Safety Culture will improve quality, productivity, profits, and make your staff safer. What more can you ask for? We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Full-Time Safety How safe and pleasing is it to have a full tank of gas? You KNOW there's no way you will run out anytime soon. Same thing with a full-time job. It gives you comfort in knowing you're earning at full capacity. Most things are just better when done at one hundred percent. And when it comes to safety - this couldn't be more true. Regardless of why you'd do it - it's never OK to operate at anything less than one hundred percent. Those moments when you remove your safety glasses because they're foggy, take off your hard hat because it's hot, or remove your harness because it's uncomfortable - is when disaster has the potential to strike. And if you listen to people that have been lucky enough to recall an accident - they almost always have the same story. "I've done that (whatever it was that assisted the accident) a hundred times before - and nothing happened." Attribute safety to that of a relationship you have. If you don't think there's a correlation - tell your significant other that you're ninety-nine percent faithful to them, and you'll see just how important one percent can be! We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Avoiding Slips And Falls Have you ever heard the Chinese Proverb, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”? It means that if you want success and growth in the future, the best time to act is now. So how does it apply to safety and our message for today? Although we're not even done with Summer yet (In the United States), Fall and Winter are right around the corner. And with those seasons come wet leaves, ice, snow, and all sorts of slick elements not usually present. Add the usual spills and leaks from machines/vehicles in the workplace to the mix - and you have all sorts of potentially hazardous conditions. Slips and falls account for hundreds of fatalities, THOUSANDS of missed days, and OSHA Violations. As with most unsafe situations in the workplace – most of these situations could have been avoided. Here are just a few ways you can help prevent slips from happening - and get ahead of potential situations. - Encourage staff to wipe off and stamp their feet before entering your facility during rainy or snowy days. - Make sure you have anti-slip tape, gritty surfaces, and mats in problem areas. - Repair machines/vehicles that leak. And if you can't stop leaks - contain them with proper spill containment products. - Encourage staff to alert maintenance as soon as a wet area is discovered. - Regularly mop wet areas and put out signs/cones indicating the situation. - Make sure staff wears slip-resistant footwear wherever applicable. These are just a few tips to make you aware - but if followed, should be a great start toward avoiding slips and falls at your facility. And since the people in that industry are busy - we know time is money, so each episode will be as short and to the point as possible. And now that all that is out of the way - let's get to the Podcast! Make Way For Safety Inspiration for our podcast today comes from outside of work. We needed to have some rugs cleaned - and decided to move everything out of the rooms being steamed (As opposed to cleaning around larger items). You don't realize how much stuff you have in a room until you see it empty. In addition - you start to question what needs to make its way back in and how you will arrange it. While waiting for the carpets to be done - I listened to talk radio. They were going over what millennials are requesting as new benefits - and how things have to change to meet those requests. These two things made me wonder how often changes are made in your facility to ensure optimized safety, efficiency, and productivity. If you follow the 5S Methodology - you know that constant and never-ending improvement is a major factor in the success of a facility. But unfortunately, "That's the way we've always done it." comes into play far too often. We know you can't move most machinery and general layouts - but you CAN focus on the best situations possible in every area. So focus on the things you can change - and adopt moving forward into the future over remaining in the ideas of the past. We look forward to seeing you next week for another Warehouse Safety Tips. Until then, have a great week and STAY SAFE! Before moving on - here's a word from one of our sponsors.
