12. Marcel Altenburg - from military to marathons, bomb threats, flood response, deviance, crowd science, risk, control rooms.

Episode 12

jeudi 13 février 2025Duration 01:38:10

Marcel, who is Senior Lecturer in Crowd Science at Manchester Metropolitan University is a friend, colleague and teacher, whom I met when studying the MSc in Crowd Safety and Risk Analysis. There were many routes this episode could have gone down has I had so many questions to ask. What I value about Marcel is his exceptionally unique perspective and outlook on life and situations, always challenging me to see things differently. This approach has aided him in developing unique solutions to challenges at the major marathons he works on across the globe. In this discussion, he shares his experience of responding to a bomb threat at one of the marathons he worked on, demonstrating the importance of training, experience and self awareness when working in a control room. We discuss an important event in his military career, his journey to crowd science, deviant behaviour in audiences and the importance of working as a team.

2. Janthea Bridgen - child care at events, regulatory compliance, lost child procedures, risk assessing events for child care, how safeguarding can be improved.

Episode 2

vendredi 14 juillet 2023Duration 55:57

Janthea Bridgen is CEO of Nipperbout, providing child care and children’s activities for the events industry. We talk about how she got to where she is today, what it takes to provide best practice and what challenges she faces in the industry. She shares fascinating insights in how she risk assesses events, debunks a theory that sometimes divides event safety teams and what she would like to see change in 10 years time. I learned so much from listening to Janthea and hope that you too can take home some of the wisdom she shares in how we can all work together to keep children safe at our events.

We couldn’t cover everything we wanted to in this episode and I will be inviting her back soon. Some of the things we are keen to cover next time are;

  • the times during an event in crowds when the risk to losing a child increases
  • the risks associated with toilets
  • the risk of losing children via fire escapes

Episode 1

jeudi 1 juin 2023Duration 01:02:36

Welcome to our first episode of Safety Sistas! The podcast about the people who keep you safe. I interview people who fascinate me with their experience, wisdom and knowledge in the world of safety and I want to celebrate the work they do behind the scenes to keep us all safe at events (and beyond). We kick things off with a bang with the wise and hilarious KT Sonnen. KT has worked in event security and medical for almost twenty years, is COO of Invictus Professional Training and now a full time PhD student. She shares with us how she got into this niche sector, how her career evolved and why she is now studying for a PhD on the behavioural science of protective security. Prepare to be taken on a rollercoaster ride as we navigate her experience, stories and how she learned a lot about crowd management from cows. Yes that’s not a typo. There was so much packed into this short hour so I hope to welcome KT back soon to go deeper into some of the critical topics we discussed for the future of the events industry. If you enjoyed this episode, please leave a review and follow the show.
