escaping competition through authenticity 10 Sep 201900:08:48

"escaping competition through authenticity "  - naval ravikant

Trying to stop looking around at what others are doing so much and focus again on finding out what exactly I want to create. I have been trying to remind myself to re-analyze the values, ideas, thoughts that I have brought into my life and creative work to see which ones actually work for me.

Creating when you don't feel like it16 Aug 201900:09:42

Just some of my thoughts on how to create when you just don't feel like it. There are some key excuses most people including me use; Perfectionism, not having the resources, rationalizing the project (whats the point?), fear of being judged, and laziness. Pick your poison!

#10 - Guy Fattal: Deep Winter Winner 201727 Jul 201700:47:26
Today a chat with Israeli photographer Guy Fattal! Guy is an photographer originally from Israel who now lives in Whistler, Canada. Guys Photography is largely based around skiing and he was the winner of the Deep Winter photography challenge this year. His slideshow was amazing I highly recommend checking it out its up online now. Please subscribe and leave a review if you enjoyed! Web: www.ryanjharris.ca Guy’s Work: http://bit.ly/2tNwzZI About Guy: I’ve always been passionate about photography and sports, in particular skiing and snowboarding. This along with my love of people, travel and nature constantly drives me to explore and experience new horizons. I feel that the camera lens is a means to capture and combine the essence of natural backdrops along with the human force of extreme athletic performance. I love photographing brilliant people in incredible surroundings with an emphasis on movement, speed and danger. My goal is to record striking and powerful photos that evoke emotion and fascination.I grew up in the hills surrounding Jerusalem and many of my local photographs echo both the uniqueness, divisions and similarities of the different faiths and cultures that live in the area. Being raised in a small country that’s never out of the news makes for a pressure cooker type of environment. That background is a part of what attracts me to vast mountain ranges and the warm camaraderie of the extreme sports world.
#09 - Mason Mashon: Biker, Photographer, Adventurer24 Jul 201700:56:40
Mason is a biker, photographer, writer, surfer and just all around adventurer. We chatted about how he got into photography, his time at university, a few recent adventures he has been on and the upcoming solar eclipse! I left this conversation super keen to step up my game and just get out there and explore more. Check out his instagram below: Mason: https://www.instagram.com/mason_mashon/ Podcast: www.ryanjharris.ca/podcast Mason's Website: http://masonmashon.com/essays/ Mason’s photography draws from a deep well of influence. Growing up in Vernon BC, and having spent much of his adult life residing in Whistler BC Canada, he honed his craft in a location known worldwide as the holy grail of action sports. Here is where his photography career began. Pursuing the sports he loved Mason became one of the most prolific Whistler ski, snowboard and mountain bike photographers in an area saturated with camera talent. As his passion for the lens grew as did his repertoire of sports. Surfing had always been an infatuation for Mason and it was only natural for him to shoot it. A professional Mountain Biker in his own right, Mason has often been the subject of others lenses and has appeared in magazines worldwide. As a presenter Mason hosted the largest mountain bike festival in the world, Crankworx Whistler, to a crowd of thousands. Starting in 2013 Mason began hosting an action sports TV show called UnderExposed. A show that followed Masons life as a freelance action sports photographer. It is now airing in Canada on APTN, and in the US on Outside TV.
#08 - Bruin Alexander: Writer & Photographer20 Jul 201701:05:46
Today we get to hang with writer and photographer Bruin Alexander. Bruin is an amazing photographer, writer and a friend of mine up here in Whistler, BC. His instagram following is over 100,000 and for good reason. His ability to combine words and imagery to tell vivid stories is very unique and not easy to find these days. Thanks for listening please leave a review 1 star or 5 depending what you thought! iTunes: http://apple.co/2ny1Wnl Podcast Website: www.ryanjharris.ca Check out his Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bruinalexander/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ryan.j.harris Bruin's Story: Almost two years ago I had a chunk of money saved, was inquiring about down-payments and in the midst of finishing my junior year of university. A concussion had, rather abruptly, ended my hockey career and despite a well constructed front, I was confused. Really confused. Around that time I picked up an old 35mm camera and had a university professor tell me I ought to pursue my book. Fast forward and you might find me sitting in a cafe somewhere drinking a black coffee and reading a good book, same as always. It hasn’t been a smooth transition, the learning curve with photography turned out to be a lot steeper than expected, and I remain by far the toughest critic of my work. What it has done is fill the void left by the loss of athletics, and I treat it with just as much intensity and hard work. The book has had highs and lows, good and bad days, I guess thats true for all of it. I took the money and invested it, now I fill the my gas tank through licensed images, commercial work and writing gigs. Living in my Cherokee this year has allowed me to climb mountains in Alberta, surf in Oahu, tramp through the southern alps of New Zealand, watch the Yankees in the Bronx, road trip around Iceland, sip whisky in Scotland, scream from the edge of the great granite cliffs in Yosemite, get lost on long nights wandering the cobblestone streets of London and stargaze from the Grand Canyon. I woke up with the sun most mornings and spent evenings scribbling in a journal from the front seat of the car, it's been an amazing ride.

#06 - Riley Elliott: Shark Scientist23 Jun 201701:09:16
Today a chat with shark scientist and marine biologist Riley Elliott. I came out of this one so so pumped up, he’s got to be one of the most passionate and tactical marine conservationists around today. Riley is one of few modern day ambassadors, who communicate science through social media using stimulating visual imagery. Riley has played a massive part in ending the Western Australia shark cull and the ban of shark finning in New Zealand. In this episode we talk about how Riley got started in Marine Biology, his time studying in South Africa watching the Great Whites poach seals all day and then surfing in the same waters that evening, his formula to invoke change in policies, and just life in general. I had so much fun chatting with him and have massive massive respect for the marine conservation work he and his team have done.  www.ryanjharris.ca
#05 - Chris Burkard: Adventure Photographer30 May 201700:29:10
A chat with Chris Burkard, arguably one of the most influential photographers of our time. Traveling throughout the year to pursue the farthest expanses of Earth, Chris works to capture stories that inspire humans to consider their relationship with nature, while promoting the preservation of wild places everywhere. In this episode Chris was pressed for time as he was on the road, usually the podcast is more of a conversation and less formal but because of time constraints things were a little more ridged. Chris and I talk about a whole number of things in this episode including; what makes his photography standout, creating timeless work, work life balance and his new film Under an Arctic Sky. See more at www.ryanjharris/podcast Thanks for listening! Please review if you enjoyed.
#04 - Kai Lenny: Big Wave Surfer24 May 201700:58:20

#03 - Angel Collinson: Big Mountain Skier20 May 201700:52:50
Angel Collinson is one of the top big mountain skiers and based in Utah. If you haven’t seen her ski before its worth checking out she skis insanely aggressive lines on some of the steepest faces around the world. In this conversation we talk about her massive fall in Alaska, getting homeschooled growing up, her morning routine, and a bunch of other stuff. Shes super chill, humble and a super talented skier. In this episode we talk about her massive fall in Alaska, growing up unconventionally, dealing with anxiety, and lots of other random bits AND bobs. You can see more info www.ryanjharris/podcast
#02 - Matt Draper: Freediving & Photography16 May 201700:41:23
Today a hangout with wildlife photographer Matt Draper. Free-diving with mako sharks, 30 foot Killer Whales and exploring the ocean while documenting his experiences with his camera. Matt Draper travels to some of the most remote areas of the world, documenting subjects for the purpose of education and positive change for the environment. Matt left his job as a carpenter and became a full-time marine photographer. With the extent of my ocean knowledge told to me by a car salesman in Hawaii, Matt teaches me a bit more about the ocean and his career as an artist.
