042. August 2022 - Trail running in review | UTMB, Sierre-Zinal and more01 Sep 202200:57:29

It was an incredible month of races and performances by so many inspiring athletes across the world.

UTMB week was a chance for the Vert.run team to finally meet and hang out together. Our founder Moisés raced UTMB and finished in under 25 hours. We had a great time meeting those of you who came to our Vert Run + Breakfast last week. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for coming to meet us in person.

We crewed and cheered the runners of OCC, CCC, TDS and UTMB. Our co-founder Kirsten Kortebein also ran ETC in Courmayeur!

We were inspired by the performances at Sierre-Zinal, where a new wave of African runners proved how much potential there is in trail running for them too. We cover in detail the results and the performances at Sierre-Zinal and Stranda Fjord Trail Race, last month's stages of the Golden Trail World Series, we talk about Trofeo Kima, Thyon-Dixence, Fletta Trail, Leadville 100, Comrades Marathon, Challenge Stellina and many more races.

041. Dillon Quitugua | Running the perimeter of Guam and empowering Pacific Islanders through trail running17 Aug 202200:53:58

Dillon Quitugua is an Hawaiian trail and ultra runner sponsored by Janji.

Dillon recently ran the 100 mile perimeter of Guam, an island in Micronesia, in the Western Pacific. In doing so, Dillon wanted to change the perspective that Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders don’t do certain things outside the traditional paradigm. He wanted to empower his people and promote sport and physical fitness among his people. Dillon named the FKT after his father and he's now planning to organize a 100m race on the same route.

He's also founded The Tribe Collective, a project with the mission to empower individuals to be their best selves through unity and service, and uplift Pacific Islanders. The organization is launching a full scholarship for a Pacific Islander to travel and trek to the Everest Base Camp at the foothills of Khumbu Glacier in 2023.

Where did these ideas come from? how did Dillon get started with trail running? what was people's reaction to his feat?

Discover Dillon's story and follow his projects and adventures! @dill_daddy

039. July 2022 - Trail running in review04 Aug 202200:48:11

July was a relatively "more relaxed" month in terms of racing, compared to the previous month. We saw most of the elite athletes putting in great training blocks towards their big  goals of the season, more shifted towards the end of the summer (UTMB week, Sierre-Zinal..). Nonetheless it was very exciting to follow the trail running scene and catch up with its diverse and fun community.

With the heatwave that we are experiencing in Europe, the glaciers melting and the landscape changing, we get the change to touch a very important topic: climate change and trail running, some ways to address this problem and how get involved in climate action. Some examples?

Support Footprints Running Camps - Kilian Jornet Foundation - Protect Our Winters. And of course use our power when we VOTE!

Learn about what you can do as an athlete and an individual on the Athlete Climate Academy

With the pause of the Golden Trail World Series - getting ready for Stranda Fjord Trail Race and Sierre-Zinal in two consecutive weeks, we followed in particular the World Mountain Running Cup, where the kenyan athletes Joyce Njeru and Patrick Kipngeno have a clean sheet with super impressive performances at Grossglockner Berglauf, Montée du Nid d'Aigle and Giir di Mont. We also followed the UTMB World Weries at Speedgoat, Val d'Aran by UTMB and Ultra Trail of Snowdonia, the Skyrunning World Series at Skyrace Comapedrosa and Schlegeis 3000 Skyrace, and some of the most famous, iconic classic races of our sport, such as Hardrock 100m (with victories by Kilian Jornet and Courtney Dauwalter) and Mount Marathon Race (where Allie McLaughlin set a new CR!)

038. Dakota Jones | Beyond just running. Environmental action, Hardrock 100 and an incurable curiosity for people and science27 Jul 202201:11:03

Dakota Jones is a trail and ultra runner from Colorado and an environmental activist.

Coming off a third place finish at Hardrock 100m Endurance Run behind Kilian Jornet and Francois D'Haene, we sat down and chatted with him about everything that is going on in his life.

Dakota is not the average trail runner. He surely is one of the most established and successful athletes in the sport, having competed across the world over any distance and terrain, from VKs to 100 milers. But he's not just that. Dakota wants to use his broad impact on the trail running community to raise awareness towards the environmental issue and do something really impactful to protect our planet.

A few years ago he felt the need to go back to university, where he's currently studying mechanical engineering. He founded Footprints Running Camps, which aims to develop leaders in climate action, combining environmental education with direct action. He's a very curious and thoughtful person; he's passionate about everything he does, and when he does something you can be sure he goes all in.

We talk in detail about his Hardrock experience, what it felt like to race with Francois D'Haene and Kilian, the story of how he got inspired to run 100 miles by Kyle Skaggs - who paced him over the last 10 mile of the race - his friendship with Kilian.

We talk about science, environment, Footprints and the trail running community.

Lastly, we discuss his collaboration with NNormal, the outdoor brand founded by Kilian Jornet and Camper in 2022.

Watch the 2021 Footprints movie and get inspired!

025. Jazmine Lowther | Training with Vert and winning Canyons 100k by UTMB!27 Apr 202201:10:26

This is the story of an achievement that makes all of us at Vert super, super proud. Our explore athlete, Canadian trail runner Jazmine Lowther WON the 2022 edition of Canyons 100k by UTMB, setting a new course record and earning a golden ticket for Western States in the process. It's a victory that we all feel a part of, thanks to Jazmine's hard work and dedication.

She raced fearlessly, listening to her body, managing the effort like an experienced athlete and finishing strong. Jazmine followed Tom Evans' 100k training plan under the guidance of Francesco Puppi. We used it as a base to incorporate a little more cross training (with the skis) and we decided to run Chuckanut 50k (where Jazmine placed 3rd) as a prep race towards Canyons, her A goal for the first part of the 2022 season.

Get to know Jazmine, her sport background and great sense of humour; follow her as she embarks on a new journey towards Western States!

Running Long | Trailer30 Mar 202200:01:32

Vert exists to celebrate running in all its forms. Running Long brings to you these stories.

021. Emelie Forsberg | Focus on the little things that make us happy30 Mar 202200:43:36

Emelie Forsberg is one of the most accomplished and inspiring trail runners of our generation, a mother, an entrepreneur, a farmer and so much more. She is from Sweden but she lives and trains in Romsdal, Norway.

I met Emelie for the first time at Giir di Mont, (31km, 2700m elevation mountain race in Italy) in 2014. I had raced the day before and I was traveling back home with my girlfriend when we decided to stop for the night in Premana, to watch Giir di Mont and cheer the runners, because I knew she would be running there with Kilian. We slept in a sleeping bag under the stars, and the day after we woke up early in the morning to go out on the course. And that was my first memory of Emelie!

In this conversation we cover many topics that I've found incredibly inspiring and related to the present time: the development of her athletic career after giving birth to her second daughter last year, where she still finds the motivation and drive to train at a high level after so many years and achievements in the sport, her projects with her farm in Romsdal and Moonvalley, the state and the future of our sport, in particular related to female athletes.

Check out Moonvalley's products here! Energy bars, chocolate, protein bars, coffee and more!

What's the best way to substitute an uphill session if I don't have mountains close to where I live?

Jonathan Wyatt is the absolute GOAT of mountain running.

Born in 1972, from New Zealand, Jono is a true legend of mountain running, someone who has really helped shaping the sport of trail and mountain running the way it is now, both from an athlete and an institutional standpoint.

130. Sophia Laukli | Running and skiing: my life, my soul22 May 202401:14:21

Sophia Laukli is a professional trail runner and cross country skier for Salomon coming from the US.

Sophia is only 23 but is already a star of the sport, being the 2023 Golden Trail World Series champion, having won races like the Mont Blanc Marathon and Sierre Zinal and her first cross country skiing world cup race this year.

I decided to reach out to Sophia knowing that she’s battling through an injury and wanting to know how she’s dealing with it and how she feels. As elite athletes, we know that injuries are part of the game but they’re still a very hard situation to get through, and I think being able to support each other and just openly talk about what we go through and what we struggle with can be valuable and teach us something.

During this episode we also discuss training on skis vs running, good and bad sides of both sports, how Sophia plans and handles her training and much much more. It turned out to be a really powerful and interesting episode, and I’m grateful to Sophia for sharing her own perspective in a very honest and authentic way.

012. Nutrition Talks #1 with On Pace Wellness | Balanced nutrition for athletes20 Jan 202200:31:51

This is the first episode of our mini series called Nutrition Talks brought to you by Vert.run in collaboration with On Pace Wellness.

On Pace Wellness is a company based in Portland, Oregon, which helps endurance athletes to optimize their nutrition for health, wellness and performance.

We chat with Wilfredo Benitez, head nutritionist at On Pace Wellness, USATF certified coach and trail runner, about the importance of a balanced nutrition for athletes.

How and what we eat have the potential to help make our goals a reality or to impede our training and performance, while potentially reducing our health at the same time. Nutrition plays a major role in the body's performance, including its health. It's important to understand some basics behind nutrition and help the body perform the best it can, whether that be athletically or just functionally.

We hope you can find some valuable information and tips for a more aware relationship with food and exercise.

Please comment, review and share this episode on social media if you enjoyed it!

011. Ruth Croft | The winning any surface any distance approach14 Jan 202200:55:15

Ruth Croft is a kiwi trail runner sponsored by Adidas Terrex.

A great friend of mine and definitely someone I've looked up to since I got into the international trail running scene, Ruth shares her 2021 journey which led her to some incredible achievements, including a win at Tarawera Ultramarathon, a 2nd place finish in her 100 mile debut at Western States, and another win at Les Templiers to cap off her season. She definitely deserves a mention among the best female trail runners of 2021.

Her results are built on a mountain of consistency and humble hard work, both on the trails and on the roads. Her collaboration with Jonathan Wyatt, a legend of mountain running, two time olympian and currently her coach, has led her to great results on virtually any surface and any distance, from 10k to the marathon on the roads, from short mountain running races to 100 milers on the trails.

We chatted about her approach to training and racing, her 2021 season and her plans for 2022, and her view on the international trail running scene and its development over the past few years.

Ruth has written two training plans for Vert, one designed for a 50k race and one dedicated to trail runners who live in a city (yes, you ca be a trail runner even if you don't always have access to the trails...Ruth herself proves it!). They both have a really good structure and great training tips that can be useful for any trail runners looking to improve his/her performance.

008. Martina Valmassoi | A 360° approach to the outdoors: running, skiing, shooting and sharing15 Dec 202101:18:17

Martina Valmassoi is an outdoor athlete and a community manager for Salomon.

She comes from Italy and she’s based in the beautiful Dolomites, where you’ll most likely find her climbing up a slope, running on a ridge or taking breathtaking pictures from her skimo, running or cycling adventures. She’s worked with many elite runners and with the most iconic races and trail running events all over the world. She’s developed a very personal approach to the sport which she likes to share with authenticity and style.

In this episode we talk about her relationship with nature, her balance between training and working, how she combines ski mountaineering and trail running.

Martina does what many people would consider their dream job, travelling, working with athletes and events and communicating all this to the world. We talk about how it started and how it’s going, and how it’s not always as easy as it looks, and how she took her chances and risks earlier in her career.

We talk about her relationship with social media and how she sees the development of trail running.

Finally, we finish her interview with a series of one-shot questions asking her opinion on the ultimate Italian dilemma: pizza or pasta?

007. Kate and Justin Arsenault | rnnr: running a company, running for a good time!08 Dec 202100:33:45

rnnr is a running company based in Colorado that makes super cool hats, beanies, socks and tees.

We chatted with Kate and Justin Arsenault, founder and co-founder of rnnr, running enthusiasts and big fans of Vert.

Kate and Justin seriously love running, but don’t take themselves too seriously as runners. And that's the main idea behind their company. They were motivated to start rnnr to inspire people running, building that cool atmosphere and camaraderie that creates its various and colorful community. It goes back to the main reason WHY we run: to move our bodies, to feel good about ourselves, to see new places and meet amazing people.

Kate was originally motivated to start the company after working with kids as a special ed teacher and track/XC coach. She started sponsoring kids to be part of their school running programs. Nowadays, rnnr supports many initiatives supporting youth running programs and communities.

During this episode we learn how the idea of rnnr was born, how the company started, what are the challenges of growing a business, the fine art of having a family, being athletes and balancing that with running a company.

006. Moisés Jimenez | How to run a 50 miler and learning to restructure your goals03 Dec 202100:56:19

Moisés Jimenez is an ultra runner for The North Face and the founder of Vert.run.

Moi was born in Venezuela, but he grew up in the Chilean Patagonia, an incredibly wild and unspoilt territory which inspired his passion for trail running. He currently lives in Annecy, France, with his wife Kirsten Kortebein, where you can find them enjoying any kind of outdoor activity in the alpine playground or a cup of coffee on the lake.

In 2021, Moi decided to focus his training on UTMB, the incredible 170km - 10000m loop around Mont Blanc. After dropping out in the latest stage of the race, he picked himself up and decided that he was not done for the year. He dedicated some time to recovery and, in the meanwhile, he got married. Eventually, Moi went on to take a wonderful third place at Maxi Race 50 mile, his final race of the 2021 season and also his home race in Annecy.

In this episode we learn from him how he planned his training for UTMB and Maxi Race, and how he handled the effort, the nutrition and the mental strategy for his 50 miler.

005. Lucy Bartholomew | You succeed when you try: behind the movie Running Out and Lucy's adventure on the Larapinta Trail23 Nov 202101:12:49

Lucy Bartholomew is an Australian ultrarunner sponsored by Salomon.

Though only 25 years old, she's had an incredible career, placing in some of the toughest ultra trails around the world and becoming one of the most popular athletes in the sport. It wasn't always perfect, it wasn't always easy, but Lucy learned to navigate the highs and lows of running (and life) in a very powerful and inspiring way: without hiding fears and doubts, but accepting them and ultimately turning them into strengths. She's developed her passion for running way beyond races and competition, chasing curiosity, empowering people and giving them the inspirations to get out and run on the trails, showing them that the real motivation often lies within themselves.

The idea of running The Larapinta Trail, a 231 km route from Mount Sonder to Alice Springs, going through some of the most remote and wild  landscapes of the Australian Outback, was born in the middle of a pandemic. Sharing much more than just the running aspect, the movie Running Out shines a light on going beyond limits, the value of community, and showcases some of the most beautiful landscapes of central Australia. Thanks Lucy for taking us through them!

129. Coach Lab with Max Keith | What types of tests can you do to monitor your fitness? Tracking progress and understanding how you're responding to training15 May 202400:37:47

Max Keith is a trail runner from Chile and the co-founder of Vert.

In this episode we talk about the different types of tests that you can do to monitor your fitness. Tracking progress is not always easy, and tests are a good way to understand how you’re responding to training, if you know what you’re doing and how to interpret the data - something that your coach can definitely help you with. From very simple field tests like a time trial, an uphill test or the max heart rate test, to more complex lab tests like the VO2max or the lactate test, we will try to shed some light on what you can learn through performing different running tests for your performance.

As always, the principle that is guiding us is to do everything we do with awareness, while having fun: it's very important to have an understanding of what we’re doing, based on who we are, what we do and what our goals are, something that of course a good coach can really help you with.

004. Tom Evans | Details that can make a difference: taking trail running to the next level.16 Nov 202101:00:20

Tom Evans is a professional trail and ultra runner sponsored by Redbull and Adidas Terrex from Loughborough, Great Britain.

He's been an athlete we have always looked up to since he entered this sport in 2017, making his debut at Marathon des Sables (3rd place). He's covered pretty much any distance and type of terrain, he's crazy fast on the roads (63:15 half marathon PR, 13:41 5000m) and he's got an incredible talent for the ultra distances.

We sat down and chatted with Tom while he's recovering from a knee surgery, easing back into training and taking care of his rehab at the Redbull Athletes Performance Center, in Austria. We went into the details of his training programs and nutrition; we discussed the importance of cross training, recovery and mental strength. What really inspired us during our conversation was how professional and scientific, but at the same time well balanced, his approach to the sport is.

After three years at the highest levels in the sport, in 2021 Tom chased his Olympic dream running the British marathon trials. We tell the story of how it went and what he learned from the experience, which ended up..in the hospital.

Finally, we dive into the new project that Tom has recently developed with Vert.run: a new training plan for 80-120km ultra trails, where he shared his knowledge and very powerful approach to training.

003. Karina Carsolio | Male and female athletes are different: sharing resources and knowledge for a healthier relationship with running, training and body image.10 Nov 202100:50:18

Karina Carsolio is a Mexican trail runner (corredora de montaña) sponsored by Salomon. She comes from a family of world class mountaineers from which she inherited her love for the mountains and the high altitudes (she lives above the clouds at 2600m of elevation, on a vulcano!).

She enjoys running on very technical terrain, which is no doubt since this year she stood on the podium of Dolomyths Run, the 3rd stage of 2021 Golden Trail World Series.

Her deep interest for physiology and her studies in medicine, together with her passion for trail running, made her realize how little awareness and information related to women's health there is among athletes. One of her missions is to extend the research on this topic, to share this type of information and make it available to anyone, in particular to help female athletes struggling with REDs (relative energy deficiency), eating disorders and body image.

002. Pascal Egli | A story of meters, ice and activism04 Nov 202100:51:48

Pascal Egli is a Swiss mountain runner and ski mountaineer who likes steep and technical races. He has an endless passion for mountains and their unspoilt landscapes, where mostly he feels at home, preferably above 3000m of elevation. While being a world class athlete, he's also completing a PhD in glaciology at the University of Lausanne.

Coming out of his first ultra, we sat down and chatted about his running career, his training and his future plans in the sport. We covered his environmental activism, his commitment for non profit organizations like POW (Protect Our Winters Switzerland) and Kilian Jornet Foundation. We talked about the importance of recovery, the environmental awareness of trail runners, his glaciology field work and the balance between his studies and his professional athletic career.

Please welcome: Pascal Egli!
