| WKRIO 002: Voices From the Past! or... Voices from the Trail 2018 | 30 Mar 2023 | 01:41:01 | |
_[NOTE: Due to poor producer skills, this episode was nearly lost to time. But thanks to some more experience, better audio editing tools (Thanks Patrons!) and quite a bit of luck... I think something was able to salvaged here. Happy to be able to share the stories from this night with you. Sorry for any residual poor audio quality. It remains the fault of the producer and not the panelists!)
_
Way back in 2018... Mort Nace and Medved once again gathered a distinguished panel of runners, assembled an interested community and provided a comfortable space for many stories to be told.
Jason Vidmar, Michael Burke, Nate Huckle, Katie Ghidiu and Joy Valvano shared their running stories with us. From broken bladders, spontaneous 50ks, near death coaching experiences to professional outdoor parenting tips.
Jason Vidmar's storied running career spans the peeks of Powder Mills Park, to the depths of the Barkley Fall Classic, around the hills of the Georgia Death Race and has left footsteps all over the Adirondacks. Trail Dad is always up for an adventure and often comes away with some entertaining anecdotes.
Katie Ghidiu is fast. She has run a sub 5 minute mile (4:55), a sub 3 hr marathon (2:58) and a sub 24 hour 100m (2:39). She Ran cross country and track at Fairport HS and University of Notre Dame.
With regards to trail racing she has a 3rd and a 1st at Ontario Summit Trail Marathon; A 1st place at Sehgahunda Trail Marathon, a 1st at Wakely Dam 55k, 3rd and 5th places finishes at Twisted Branch 100k, and sub 24 hour at her first 100 miler in Burning River 100M, 23:39.
She is also an Adirondack 46er and likely has a lot of dirt on Nate Huckle.
Nate Huckle is a running coach, a mentor, an ultrarunner, an ADK46er and a raconteur. Go on a run with him and he'll likely start telling you a story that before you know it, has held your attention for more hours and miles than you intended (or were willing) to run!
Michael Burke has run more than 70 races in and around the Rochester area. While doing so he has found time to raise his family outdoors (not actually, but you know) and help found a charity that assists local families affected by cancer. Find Mike on the trails and he is more than likely to chew your ear off (again, not actually, but with like stories and jokes and stuff)
Joy Valvano started running ultras back when it was considered crazy. More crazy than today. Her running consisted of often taking up road trip adventures with her running friends to races like Bull Run Run (10 times!!) and even 100 milers like Haliburton and Vermont. But her running isn't all in her past, Joy has recently run Twisted Branch 100k. Originally a runner for some alone time and a bit of fitness, Joy has found herself spending more and more (and more) time in the woods. Special Guests: Jason Vidmar, Joy Valvano, Katie Ghidiu, Michael Burke, Mort Nace, and Nate Huckle.

| 111: One of Those Beard Shaving Moments | 24 Jan 2023 | 01:08:05 | |
Scott Magee, Race Director of Twisted Branch 100k joins. We chat about what it's like to not be on the internet, taking unintentional breaks (ahem cough, cough) and of course Twisted and Frozen Branches.
There was a time when Scott didn't run a lot. Then he did run a lot. And as often happens to many of us in the trail running community, the desire to give back and contribute to community became so overwhelming that Scott up and created a 100k race. Starting with a map of the Bristol Hills Branch and stoked by a love of running, community and the Finger Lakes Trail (and of course, the prodding of others), Scott created Twisted Branch as a contribution to the running community. I created Running Inside Out in much the same manner. Hearing so many stories out on group runs and at races, thinking those stories should be saved and shared (and of course, the prodding of others.), Running Inside Out Podcast was a way to have our stories be shared and celebrated. But lo, these 8 years later, what's it like to shepherd these things along while feeling somewhat disconnected?
Also, why does Frozen Branch exist? What even is it?
And after 7 iterations, does Twisted Branch still have any tricks up its sleeve (it does.) How do you make changes to something so familiar that everyone has come to love? Special Guest: Scott Magee.

| 110: I Think a Hundred Is Doable - Prepping for Western States with Charlie Granger | 12 Jun 2022 | 01:39:52 | |
In this episode we wander around the surprisingly busy Genesee Valley Park with Charlie Granger. Charlie is heading to Western States this year! But he’s been out west before this… Angeles Crest 100 was his first hundred miler. He’s from the San Gabriel mountains, so you know, it just made sense. As for locally, you may have seen Charlie around Twisted Branch 100k, Many on the Genny or maybe most recently at Cayuga Trails 50k. This was a fun experiment of a podcast, Charlie and I participate in a quite eventful day at Genesee Valley park and chat about how his training is going, how he plans (or doesn’t) for these big events and just some life things in general. And as you’ll see, both of us have a bit of a fun time trying to remember, well… anything from the past. So feel free to shout into the air as you hear us stumble through a bunch of “thought exercises”
Special Guest: Charlie Granger.

They had some amazing training sessions and races together and so once Zach gets on the line, things get a lot more interesting. Special Guest: Jeff Beck.

| 082: We Don't Have to Talk About Me - with Mike Welden | 04 Jul 2019 | 01:43:53 | |
Despite the odds, the Earth has made it around the sun again and so it is time for Mike Welden to visit the studio. I wasn't sure what Mike had in store when he called me. In the end, it turned it wasn't anything to be afraid of; a little bit of running, a couple of laughs and good chat with a great person. Mike and I talk a little bit about Many On the Genny, Twisted Branch, and what it might look like if we all started being a bit more human to each other. As with most episodes featuring MIke, the language gets a little saucy, so keep away from sensitive ears if that isn't your thing. Special Guest: Mike Welden.

| 080: Barkley Marathons at Mind The Ducks - with John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy | 13 May 2019 | 01:19:18 | |
You may have heard of a little Netflix documentary called "Barkley, the Race that eats its young" and if you are a trail or ultra runner, you may have even been asked if you ever ran or want to run Barkley. And if you are a silly person, you might even be thinking that you DO want to run Barkley someday. What you may not know is that we have two people from the Rochester Area that have run Barkley. In fact, 6 they have 6 attempts between the two of them!
Tim Hardy and John Fegyveresi both ran the race in 2012. John is one of the races only 15 finishers. Tim has finished races like Arrowhead 135, Badwater, And Massanutten Mountain and yet was portrayed as 'the human sacrifice' in the movie.
Well thanks to Greater Rochester Track Club, Tim and John gave us a view behind the curtain. Special Guests: John Fegyveresi and Tim Hardy.

| 078: I Get This Now - with Lisa Famiglietti | 19 Apr 2019 | 01:37:23 | |
Lisa Famiglietti drops in to talk about being coerced into spontaneous racing, the joy (and coercion) of running groups, and how she hasn't ran a marathon (yet.) Then we explore the menus and beers of our favorite cities.
Lisa's first ever race was a borrowed bib, her most recent race was a borrowed bib, get the picture? She can frequently be found running with (and wearing the colors of) Rochester Running Company. She brought me Fifth Frame and TreeHouse Beers. She works in TV and usually keeps a tight schedule, so she wanted to make this brief and tidy... but she brought beers... so we disavowed her of that notion pretty quickly. Enjoy! (and don't play the "Drink every time you hear Rochester Running Company" game while listening... please... for everyone's safety.) Special Guest: Lisa Famiglietti.

| 077: Voices From the Trail 2019 | 30 Mar 2019 | 01:16:28 | |
Laura Rekkerth made her way to 74 peaks last year. Daven Oskvig has run more than 70 ultras, finishing many on the podium. Tim Kent is a purposeful training machine setting an example for the next generation. Laura Webber is a family oriented adventure racer who did a 24 hour mountain bike relay race with her husband Ian while their 1 and 3 year old served as crew.
They each were kind enough to share their experiences and motivations running and getting outside as well as humoring me during some of my more … interesting lines of questioning.
Special Guests: Daven oskvig, Laura Rekkerth, Laura Webber, and Tim Kent.
