Thank you and goodnight 31 Jan 202500:30:02

If you’re wondering why this episode is called thank you and good night it is because it is the final episode.

I’ve had an absolute fantastic time. I’ve met some incredible people hosting this podcast since it first started in August 2019 not just as guests but as listeners and also at all the runs I've taken part in.

It was only meant to help me complete the Classic Quarter which I did in May 2021 so it should’ve finished over 3 1/2 years ago .

But here we are at episode number 173 and of course it was almost by sheer chance that this whole journey started.

Back in February 2019 I was invited to speak at a business conference. The headline speaker was a guy called Jim Lawless who talked about a concept he had created called TamingTigers which essentially was about setting yourself challenges way beyond your comfort zone.

Whilst listening to Jim, I was conscious that I was just over two years away from a landmark birthday for which I had been thinking about running a third career marathon, the previous two being in 2005 and 2010. Listening to Jim I realised that wasn’t a Taming Tigers enough challenge.

For some reason the name Classic Quarter popped up into my head and I looked it up over lunchtime to discover that it was a coastal path run from Lizard Point, which is relatively close to where I was living when my children were growing up, to Lands End. Undoubtedly the Taming Tigers bit was discovering it was 44 miles!

I started calling the challenge 44 at 60 and as I already had a business podcast I decided that the best way to learn how to take on this challenge was to start a podcast so I could record all the great advice I knew I would be given.

The first episode which was basically an introduction episode went live in August 2019, with episode two being my first ever coastal path race -  the White Rat. My first guest was the fabulous Andy Goundry who told me ultrarunning was an eating competition not a running competition and to make sure that I walked up all the hills in the race, but to run up all of them in training and keep smiling!

Without doubt this podcast was a massive factor in achieving my goal of finishing the Classic Quarter and along the way raising over £7000 for the children’s hospice Southwest and postrace writing the book 12 business lessons from running an ultra marathon.

So many fantastic guests, so many great running adventures and so many great running community friends. I feel very privileged to have been able to do this.

Thank you everyone - it's been a blast!

Arc 50 - what happened - 6 runners tell all27 Jan 202501:06:22

So here we are recording on Monday January 27th - 2 days after the Arc 50

So what happened to our group - Richard, Anya, Himani, Tom, Nicky and Matt?

Each has a story to tell

Some made it

Some didn’t

What would they all do differently?

And what are they doing next?

It has been fantastic being part of this group - behind the scenes the What’s app group the 7 of us are part of has been virtually every day for the past 2.5 months full of encouragement, support, advice and help.

And most of us met in person for the first time at either Friday registration or at 5am on the Saturday in the barn at HQ waiting for the coaches to the Minack

Rachel Thomson’s Landmark Birthday Challenges 02 Dec 202400:30:33

To celebrate a landmark birthday in 2024 Rachel Thomson tackled a series of running events throughout the year whilst raising money for St Petrocs, the Cornwall Homeless Charity. The website provides information on how you can donate - including all those running hoodies you never wear.

So how did all go?

We catch up on the four events that became five when Rachel added the November Cornish Marathon to her challenges.

Rachel’s fundraising finishes at the start of 2025 so you still have time to support her via her Local Giving page.

The five challenges Rachel undertook:

April 21st - London Marathon - Rachel wore a bright yellow St Petrocs top and had a fabulous day out.

June 14th - Scilly 60% - 38 km over four of the Isles of Scilly: St Martins, Tresco, Bryher, St Agnes - if you miss the cut off on any stage you literally miss the boat to the next stage. Did Rachel make the cut offs?

Aug 2nd 7pm start  - The BOYD (Bring Out Your Dead) - 24 hours of running a 5 mile loop which includes 500 steps. If you stop at any point for more than 10 minutes you're out! Rachel tells how a rogue piece of wood with nails didn't help.

Sept 14th - The Woods - 12 hours of a 4 mile loop in Tehidy Woods. One of Rachel's favourites.

Nov 3rd - The Cornish Marathon - 26.2 miles through mid/east Cornwall

Newport Marathon - on the run recording 25 Oct 202100:23:08

The Newport Marathon claims to be one of the flattest marathons around and offers great opportunities for PB's – well I can certain events for the flat bit and I did get within 15 minutes of a PB but there were also 16 years in between so that was quite a challenge!
Most of the recording of this podcast took place whilst I was actually running so you get a feel for not just the course but the atmosphere around it and I have to say the marshals and aid station volunteers were absolutely magnificent.
If you are tempted here is the link: Newport Marathon

Big thanks to Helen, Claire, Jim, Katie, Ben, Lia and Matt sharing their experiences of running the 2021 London Marathon. For Helen this was a journey that began just over two years ago as a complete non-runner whilst for Claire it was a PB and another good for age time and a PB for Katie who knitted 250 hats in order to raise money to be on the start line.
This episode is all about inspiring you as a potential marathon runner to set yourself a target running a marathon in 2022 wherever that might be.
Tips include enjoying the day, not taking a week of work prior to the run and having your name displayed on your shirt.

Comrades Marathon with Green Number holder Trevor Nel 30 Jun 202100:34:35

The Comrades Marathon is described as 'The Ultimate Human Race'. It is 54 miles between Durban and Pietermaritzburg alternating each year with the Durban start known as the 'Up' version and Pietermaritzburg start known as the 'Down' version.
It is the world's oldest ultramarathon starting with the race won by Bill Rowan in 1921.
In this episode Trevor Nel, who ran Comrades 10 successive times to earn a much prized 'Green Number', talks about and shares the toughness of the race and his own adventures in it.
Trevor's article which appeared on Linked In illustrates how Comrades is a metaphor for life. Trevor also took part in the 120km Dusi Canoe Marathon -  which like Comrades runs between Pietermaritzburg and Durban and is the biggest canoeing event on the African continent.

Phil Begnett and the 53 mile 'Race to the King'21 Jun 202100:25:40

Phil Begnett returns to the podcast to share his experience of his first large-scale ultra run 'Race to the King' which was along the South Downs Way starting at Goodwood racecourse and finishing at Winchester Cathedral to meet the 'King' although it seems the King had another engagement to attend when Phil arrived.

Phil shares his tips and ideas for fellow first time ultra runners including the benefits of a shoe change and why he wouldn't recommend running 35 miles just 4 weeks before!

It is called 'Race to the King' because in 827 the first king of all England, Egbert, was crowned in Winchester.  Phil did the full 53 miles in one go but there is an option with this event to split it over two days and a 23 on the first day and 30 on the second day.

Arc 50 2025 Build Up - Hayle to Godrevy19 Nov 202400:34:54

On the run recording of the Arc 50 Hayle to Godrevy section condensed into about 30 minutes of run time.

Taking you through the Dunes - often referred to as the 'Dunes of Doom' - well lets hope not! I've been through here several tie including twice last winter in the dark with my good friend Tracy Waite. I took some photos on this and previous run which you can find on my Arc Training Website section. You can also photos from my previous podcast episode which covered the Zennor to St Ives section. Next up I'll be looking to cover Pendeen to Zennor.

I've broken the ARC 50 down into 9 sections:

  1. Minack to Lands End
  2. Lands End to Cape Cornwall
  3. Cape Cornwall to Pendeen
  4. Pendeen to Zennor
  5. Zennor to St Ives
  6. St Ives to Hayle
  7. Hayle to Godrevy
  8. Godrevy to Portreath
  9. Portreath to Porthtowan

This episode covers section 7
The previous one covers section 5
And I'm planning to cover section 4

For me these are the crucial sections as I'll be chasing cut off times at St Ives and then Godrevy.

If you are taking part in the ARC 50 and want to a share top tip or two then drop an email to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk or at the top of these notes press ‘Send us a Text Message’ - if you use that method please include your name otherwise I won't know who you are and I can’t reply to text messages.

7 top tips for first time Ultra Runners from a first time Ultra Runner 14 Jun 202100:25:39

In this episode Trevor aims at first time Ultra Runners sharing his tips from being a first time ultra runner. A summary of those tips is below:

  1. Find the ultramarathon you want to do, book it, and then tell everyone you’re doing it
  2. Study the course plan, if you can do some recces great if not use Google maps / earth watch videos, listen to podcasts  etc...
  3. Have a training plan that works for you. My recommendation would be in the last 13 weeks do some back-to-back runs maybe 16 one day and 13 the next and build in some hill work (run up the hills in training)
  4. Practice eating and drinking  in the last 3 to 4 months of training. You need to know what you’re going to be comfortable eating on the day . Practice eating even on short runs so  if you’re doing 6 miles take something to eat after 3.
  5. Taper early - I did from three weeks out and the four short runs I did in those last three weeks were all at ultra pace
  6. Recruit a reliable crew if you need crew for your event.
  7. If it is going to be hilly then walk up all the hills and consider using running poles but of course if you do that then do practice with them prior.

And the bonus one -  go and have a big day out, you know you’ve done the planning and the preparation so all you’ve got to do now is go and enjoy the day

Good luck

In this episode of the podcast Andy and Trevor reflect on their big day out sharing tips and ideas along the course which will be particularly useful for those running the full event for the first time.

We talk about eating, shoe changes, crew points, motivation, not going off course and our overall experience.

Note that towards the end of the podcast Andy makes reference to the Arc of Attrition 50 which as these show notes are updated he successfully went on to complete the end of January 2022.

This is episode 61 of the Running 44@60 podcast. You can access and download all episodes via your usual podcast app or follow this link.

May 22nd 2021 - the big day out - the epic adventure that was the Classic Quarter and I made it! Not that I ever doubted I wouldn't make it provided I didn't do something silly like twist my ankle or fall of the cliff!
The audio is wind affected - despite buying a wind resistant mic cover - in parts and my phone goes on the blink for the last 11 miles.
Nevertheless I hope this gives you a flavour of what it was like.

#54: Winning 24 hour races and final Classic Quarter tips with Colin Bathe 12 May 202100:31:29

Colin was the inaugural winner in 2019 of an event called 'Bring out your dead' which was a 24-hour event part of the Roseland August Trails (RAT) involving running essentially for the full 24-hour is as you are only allowed to stop for a maximum of 20 minutes at any one point in time and you have to be totally self-sufficient so you couldn't even indulge in the aid station which was part of the 2 1/2 mile out and back route for this 24-hour run.
Colin also shares some final top tips of the classic water including notes on the route, pack weights, the mental state of mind etc

ARC 50 - Zennor to St Ives 15 Nov 202400:30:33

On the run recording of the Zennor to St Ives route condensed into about 20 minutes of run time.

Picking out all the various landmarks, gates, big rocks, styles, signposts along the way.

I've broken the ARC 50 down into 9 sections:

  1. Minack to Lands End
  2. Lands End to Cape Cornwall
  3. Cape Cornwall to Pendeen
  4. Pendeen to Zennor
  5. Zennor to St Ives
  6. St Ives to Hayle
  7. Hayle to Godrevy
  8. Godrevy to Portreath
  9. Portreath to Porthtowan

This episode covers section 5
The next one covers section 7
And I'm planning to cover section 4

For me these are the crucial sections as I'll be chasing cut off times at St Ives and then Godrevy.

I ran my first, and so far only, ultra marathon in 2021 - the 44 mile Classic Quarter - to celebrate a landmark birthday which was a few weeks before the run.

This podcast started as a way of me learning how to do that - hence why it’s called Running 44@60. The adventure then turned into a book and as a business consultant it became both a business and running book and is available on Amazon via this link: 12 Business Lessons from Running an Ultra Marathon.

My run raised over £7000 for Childrens Hospice South West Music Therapy programme and every book bought on Amazon generates another £5 for the programme.

#53: Classic Quarter Training Done - Mindset Begins05 May 202100:26:30

This episode was recorded on May 5th 2021 - 17 days before the Classic Quarter and exactly 27 months and 820 days since I announced I was going to take part - that announcement was on Feb 5th 2019.
In this episode I reflect on the transition from completing the long run training to now focusing on my mindset for the day. I share how I'm breaking the course down into four very uneven quarters and also into 3 mile segments and what I'll be doing during each segment as well as talking about how I'm planning to simply have a big day out.
I also introduce a new idea when this is over called RB@50 which is running begins at 50 and is inspired a little bit by the lonely goats running community and also by the number of people that I've met my kind of age-group out running on their own during my training as well as targeting those people who have got to the stage in life where they words want to return to their youthful activity but without any motivation or inspiration could easily end up simply not doing that and instead buying a bigger TV a bigger sofa and a wider sky sports subscription.
If you think this podcast is a value and worth a tenner towards my fundraising campaign and please click here to make a donation and help me get to a new target of £6000 – and please do leave a review via your podcast app. Thanks very much.

#48: The 'secret' birthday marathon 05 Apr 202100:16:04

Good Friday - April 2nd - was my 60th birthday and I had decided to do my own marathon starting at 8am.  A chance to collect marathon  number 3 after Amsterdam in 2005 and Eden in 2010. But having shouted so much about 44@60 I decided to keep this quiet. Only my daughter Beth and son Jim knew.
Little did I know that Beth had spent 6 weeks organising support runners all the way along the route - and of course that had only been allowed since March 29th.
This podcast episode summarises how the 'secret' marathon unfolded....

#44: The Big Announcement 31 Jan 202100:13:00

The big announcement is that I'm going to be raising money for Musical Therapy sessions delivered by Children's Hospice South West.
And I need your help to hit my £100 / mile target
Two fundraising ways:
1. Just Giving - we divided the 44 miles into 176 quarter mile segments and we're looking to have each segment sponsored for £10. As a incentive Trevor Lee Media is sponsoring a £75 eating out voucher for one lucky sponsor who will be decided by a random draw.

2. Business Masterclasses - I'm running a series of 3 sales and presenting masterclasses. They are all virtual and will be a fast paced, action packed one hour. Spots are £44 +vat with the entire  £44 going into the fund-raising pot.

Any support and/or sharing of this much appreciated.

Cornish Marathon on the run recording 04 Nov 202400:30:45

I made a big thing about saying that I would never run the Cornish Marathon and there I was on November 3rd 2024 on the start line.

So yes I did run the Cornish Marathon, or rather I 'Jeffed' the Cornish Marathon so four minutes running one minute walking using the same strategy I used at the Brighton Marathon earlier in the year.

Was a great day and I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Lots of fantastic people and some amazing views from the middle of nowhere.

Loads of great volunteers out on the course - just a tremendous day. I'm so glad that I did do it.

This is an on the run recording picking up snippets as I go which I hope you'll enjoy and I hope will give you a flavour for the Cornish Marathon if you decide to do it in 2025.

If you do think about that here's the link to the East Cornwall Harriers website page featuring the Cornish Marathon.

#33: 100 Up and Garmin Connect down29 Jul 202000:15:04

I've now gone past 100 runs for the year, helped my daughter do her first half marathon, took 12 days off to rest which broke my sequence of 'Not a Park Run', got some new shoes, and am told the Classic Quarter is still on for Sept 5th.

#31: Andy Williams on lockdown running, injury, and the way ahead27 May 202000:26:56

Andy and I were planning to run this year's Classic Quarter as a relay of 2. Andy though has been injured and the event is currently delayed until Sept 5th but realistically that is unlikely to happen.
