RCL65: ’Breathwork & Nasal Breathing for Performance’ with special guest David ’Jacko’ Jackson13 Aug 202301:14:02

Is nasal breathing better for running? David 'Jacko' Jackson, former professional rugby player forced to retire in 2013 due to traumatic brain injury, recently ran up & down Mount Snowdon 6 times in 24 hours. He also ran a 216km Ultra Marathon, breathing just through his nose. In this episode of Runchatlive Podcast, he discusses how efficient functional breathing using the nose instead of the mouth can be key in not just recovery from brain injury but also improving athletic performance.  With 316 appearances for Nottingham RFC, and 102 tries across a career of 13 years, David 'Jacko' Jackson was forced to retire in 2013 due to ‘TBI’ - Traumatic Brain Injury. Re–training as a Strength & Conditioning Coach, David co-founded the School of Calisthenics, became a Master Instructor with the Oxygen Advantage, and founded ProBreathwork.com. In this episode, originally recorded for the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, Jacko talks to us about his incredible journey.

RCL56: ’In-Home Polysomnography’ with special guest Dr Amy M Bender01 May 202201:11:11

And so we reach the final part of our 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, being uploaded also to this Runchatlive Podcast. My special guest is Dr Amy M Bender, Director of Clinical Sleep Science at Cerebra, talking about 'In-Home Polysomnography' and sharing the results of my recent five week sleep study using the Cerebra Sleep System. What is In-Home Polysomnography? The most comprehensive form of sleep study currently available requires going to a sleep-lab. However, for many the sleeping environment is unnatural and equipment uncomfortable. A popular alternative is the ‘Home Sleep Apnea Test’ (HSAT), which though convenient only measures breathing and respiratory functions, not sleep quality. Enter the ‘Cerebra Sleep System‘ – an in-home, self applied polysomnogram (PSG) that provides the quality diagnostics of an in-lab study with the convenience of Home Sleep Apnea Testing.

For those of you who like the nitty gritty, Cerebra Sleep System uses the patented algorithm Odds Ratio Product (ORP) that micro analyses the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal providing a continuous measure of sleep depth, moving beyond conventional scoring methods to dig deeper into brain activity.

The Cerebra Sleep System can measure brain waves (EEG), eye movement (EOG), respiratory data, leg and body movements, pulse oximetry, and heart rate (ECG).

My Five Week Sleep Study using ‘Cerebra Sleep System’ My personal five week sleep study included:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG/brain waves).
  • Electrooculography (EOG/eye movements).
  • Electromyography (EMG/electrical activity of chin muscle).
  • Daily reaction time tests to track performance.
  • Questionnaires on perceived sleep quality, disturbances during the night.
  • Tracking of daily exercise & use of electronics before bedtime.

In this podcast episode, topics discussed included:

  • What are the benefits but also limitations of common consumer wearables like Fitbit and Oura ring?
  • How does the Cerebra In-Home Polysomnogram Sleep System differ from the above?
  • How useful is the data regarding the different stages of sleep, e.g. REM, N-REM, Deep Sleep, etc.?
  • How did Matt Phillips find sleeping with the Cerebra headset on?
  • How useful was it being held accountable each day by filling in questionnaires?
  • What was Matt's Sleep Study expecting to find by removing caffeine consumption after week one?
  • A look at the results from Matt's five week Sleep Study including: - General Insights (sleep efficiency, sleep latency, reported sleep quality, and more) - Actual sleep time per night - Amount of waking up after going to sleep - Effect of removing caffeine: evening sleepiness, reaction time, attention lapses
  • Take home messages from the study & Sleep Awareness Month

RCL54: Sleep Awareness Month Pt2 - ’Sleep Trackers’ with guest Dr Olivia Walch13 Apr 202201:12:00

After 18 months we're BACK! The response for last week's 'Sleep: The Silent Epidemic' episode has been fantastic - so very glad it has proved popular amongst the Runchatlive Community. We will continue to stream all episodes of the 'Sleep Awareness Month' LIVE to not just the STA YouTube Channel but also the Runchatlive Facebook Page so if you'd like to watch them live be sure to head to one of these sites at 8pm (GMT +1) every Tuesday in April.

In Part 2 of this month's 'SLEEP AWARENESS MONTH' on the Sports Therapy Association Podcast, we talk about 'Sleep Trackables' with special guest Dr Olivia Walch, CEO of Arcascope, a company that develops science-backed apps to help people fix their sleep and circadian rhythms. With an estimated one in three people in the UK reporting regular sleep complaints, it is not surprising that sleep trackers have become enormously popular over the last few years. On waking up, our faithful Fitbit, Oura Ring or Withings Sleep Analyzer (to name just three) will inform you of the quantity & quality of your night's sleep, but just how accurate are they? Can the information these consumer sleep wearables provide be put to good use, or are they just another modern day gadget causing dependency and anxiety? Special guest Dr Olivia Walch takes us through such questions to see how marketing claims hold up under the scrutiny of science, and discusses what role they can play in improving sleep health.

Topics discussed include:

  • What is the difference between sleep trackers and sleep wearables?
  • How long have sleep trackers/wearables been used to assess sleep quanitity/quality?
  • How has the technology in sleep wearables changed over time?
  • How do scoring algorithms work?
  • How accurate are popular sleep wearables from Garmin, Fitbit, Oura Ring, etc?
  • Can popular consumer sleep wearables measure stages of sleep?
  • What is the relationship like between sleep researchers and consumer brands for wearables?
  • If we see clients/patients are wearing sleep trackers, what sort of conversations should we be having with them?
  • Can sleep trackers cause 'orthosomnia' - the obsession for 'perfect' sleep?
  • Using sleep wearables to measure sleep consistency.
  • Controlling light exposure: one of the easiest & most accessible ways to improve sleep quality/quanity

Paul Ingraham: Muscle Knots and Trigger Points - Run Chat Live #5209 Oct 202001:11:36

Visit a massage therapist and chances are you will be told you have muscle knots and maybe even 'Trigger Points'. Much of the therapist's work will strive to 'undo' these knots, maybe using 'Trigger Point Therapy'. But how much evidence is there that these knots are responsible for pain. What effect does 'releasing' them have? As runners, can we benefit from such 'release'?

Ep.52 of Run Chat Live Podcast brings you the undisputed forefather of putting evidence back into therapeutical care - Mr Paul Ingraham. If you are as yet aware of Paul Ingraham’s work via painscience.com, formerly known as saveyourself.ca, then buckle yourself in for an episode that is going to change your life. Though taste is obviously a personal thing, as far as writing style, humour & educational skills go, Paul Ingraham is still after many, many years one of Run Chat Live's TOP RECOMMENDATIONS for clinicians (and patients) looking to open the door to becoming more evidence based.

Check out Paul’s book about trigger points and muscle pain. That's behind a paywall, but there's also a long free article about trigger point science and controversies, and an introduction to basic trigger point therapy.

Alice Sanvito: Massage Therapy - How to be Evidence Based19 Sep 202001:11:03

Despite the popularity of massage, many of the common assumptions of what is happening physiologically are poorly evidenced. In this episode of Runchatlive, internationally acclaimed massage therapist Alice Sanvito talks to us about what massage does & doesn’t do for runners, and how therapists can make it work better. We also discuss both therapists and runners can learn & evolve without feeling anger & frustration. Alice Sanvito is one of ten speakers presenting at this year's Runchatlive International Running Conference, Oct 29th & 30th Online. As one of just four therapists in the USA selected by Zhenya Kurashova Wine to be trained as instructors for the Kurashova Institute for the Study of Physical Medicine, Alice Sanvito has a great amount of experience in massage therapy, with a no nonsense science-based approach that makes her a leading figure in a number of online communities. Dr. Benno Nigg: Running Shoes - 40 years of research04 Sep 202001:15:03

Regarded by many as the important contributor to running related research over the past 40 years, Dr. Benno Nigg is Founder & director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Calgary, a multi-disciplinary Research Center concentrating on the study of the human body and its locomotion. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the Olympic Order, honorary degrees from the Universities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and an honorary professorship from the University of Shanghai.

In this episode of Runchatlive, he will be discussing the SCIENCE behind modern running shoes. What role have shoes truly played in the performance explosion we have witnessed since Eliud Kipchoge became the first man to break two hours for the marathon. 2019 also brought us twice as many men running under 2:10 and twice as many women under 2:27 compared to 2016. Eight of the twelve fastest men’s marathons in history have been run in the last year. How much of a factor has this new breed of shoe played? And more importantly, what is it in the shoe that could have made this possible?

With over 25,000 publications on human locomotion, in particular with relation to products such as orthoses, shoe insoles, sport shoes, surfaces and sport equipment, Dr. Nigg will be giving us an inside look at his latest study that appeared this August in the British Journal of Sports Medicine: 'The teeter-totter effect: A new mechanism to understand shoe-related improvements in long-distance running.'

An incredible hour, thank you once again Dr. Benno Nigg for giving us his time.

It is the second leading cause of knee pain and the most common cause of lateral knee pain. To facilitate evidence-based management of ITBS, one needs to learn about the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this injury. This is often not as simple as it sounds because studies often contradict each other. Fortunately, in this episode of Runchatlive (for the first time in Spanish!) we have the pleasure of speaking with physical therapist Manuela Besomi, who has been working on ITBS as part of her PhD in Australia. Hamish Vickerman: How To Overcome Plantar Fasciitis04 Jul 202001:00:27
Runchatlive Ep.47 brings you a 'Plantar Fasciitis Special' with guest Hamish Vickerman, creator of 'The Fasciitis Fighter.' As per last month , this episode was dual-streamed LIVE to Facebook Group 'The Running Community' www.facebook.com/TheRunningCommunity as well as our facebook page at www.facebook.com/MattPhillipsRCL . Hamish Vickerman created The Fasciitis Fighter in reaction to research published by Michael Rathleff in 2014: 'High-load strength training improves outcome in patients with plantar fasciitis'. In this episode, we discuss how the Rathleff paper revolutionised the way Plantar Fasciitis (PF) should be treated, and in doing so we cast a critical eye on many of the traditional ways that runners & non runners deal with PF, often following advice handed out by therapists & GPs who are clearly not up to date with the evidence. It's an eye opening episode which we hope you enjoy and take on board, whether you are a therapist or a runner. As always feel free to leave comments and questions in the comment section.

Nadeah Miranda: Love Gods & Marathons06 Jun 202001:24:17

Runchatlive Ep45: Nadeah Miranda 'Love Gods & Marathons' Exciting curveball in this episode as we bring you with great delight an interview with musician & vocalist extraordinaire Nadeah Miranda. Nadeah is an Australian singer-songwriter, model, and actress who shot to fame in the early 2000's as cofounder of Brighton based band 'The Lovegods'. The band won Radio 1’s best unsigned band and played Glastonbury three times. Nadeah then moved to Paris, joined Nouvelle Vague for three years and then put out three solo albums under the name Nadéah - Venus Gets Even (2011), While the Heart Beats (2016) and Milk Teeth (2019). As a fan throughout those 15 years, it therefore gave me GREAT pleasure when I heard during one of Nadeah's Facebook Live sessions that she is interested in running a marathon... but hasn't yet. Like a rag to a bull, the goal was set. In this special Runchatlive episode I ask Nadeah to comment of my favourite songs/videos that span her career to date, whilst Nadeah asks me about certain barriers she feels she has with regards to running a marathon. We had a great time recording this, despite a couple of internet connection issues, and totally recommend you check out Nadeah on Facebook with her regular live performances. The debut ep 'DreamBitches' by Nadeah & Beki (teaming up with producer Marc Collin of Nouvelle Vague) was released in March and is available on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/3yRMeeFPDRPAvUdYkNNDjl We hope you enjoy this episode of Runchatlive, and as always if you do please please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts / iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/runchatlive/id1446286174

Matt Fitzgerald: Running The Dream - How To Train Like An Elite22 May 202001:06:01

Runchatlive Ep43: Matt Fitzgerald 'Running The Dream'

In this episode of Runchatlive, we welcome the return of Matt Fitzgerald, nutritionist, endurance athlete and author of hugely popular books such as 'Brain Training For Runners', 'Run Faster 5k to Marathon', '80/20 Running', 'Diet Cults' and the truly incredible 'Life Is A Marathon' which we spoke to Matt about in Runchatlive Ep.37.

'RUNNING THE DREAM', Matt's latest book, documents a summer he spent with the Northern Arizona Elite, one of the country's premier professional running teams, training with national champions and Olympic hopefuls in the running mecca of Flagstaff, Arizona, leading in to the Chicago Marathon. His goal: to beat at the age of 46 a marathon PB he set 9 years earlier!

With Matt's trademark mix of humour, drama and defiant endurance in the face of adversity, 'RUNNING THE DREAM' is an incredible book and a total eye opener for any veteran runner tempted to play the "I'm too old" card, flipping as always from utterly gripping to Cheshire grinning, chapter after chapter.

Todd Hargrove: Playing With Movement - How to succeed at exercise01 May 202001:13:30

"Kids, animals, and most successful athletes develop skill and fitness through play, not working out. The best pathway to movement health is found not by tracking huge amounts of data or following algorithms, but through curious exploration of the physical world."

In 2014 , Todd Hargrove's book 'A Guide To Better Movement' rapidly became an absolute 'must have' for anyone who works with people in pain, explaining in a way that only Todd can concepts from modern pain science including the neuroscience of motor control, cortical body maps, complex systems, developmental movement patterns, and more.

In this episode of RunChatLive, we talk to Todd about his recent book 'Playing With Movement' in which he discusses how the mainstream approach to sport training and physical therapy has become 'all work no play', too often focussing on movements that are boring, repetitive, planned, stressful, and intrinsically meaningless.

We hope you enjoy it!

Tom Goom: 2002-2020 Changes In Running Injury Prevention08 Mar 202001:11:56

Ep40: Tom Goom - 2002-2020 Changes In Running Injury Prevention Tom Goom a.k.a. 'The Running Physio' is a physiotherapist based in Brighton, working out of the Physio Rooms. His 'Running Repairs Course' is internationally acclaimed, and he has now organised a 'Running Rehab, from Pain to Performance’ conference this April 24th in London, with speakers Alex Hutchinson, Ian Griffiths, Claire Minshull and Chris Napier. With this superb line-up, the conference is destined to be of huge value! Tickets available at https://www.running-physio.com/p2p/ With this year marking Tom’s 18th year as a Physiotherapist, we decided to celebrate by taking a trip down memory lane and looking at ways in which the management & treatment of Running Injury & the optimization of Running Performance has changed since Tom started in 2002. The episode is literally FULL of fantastic advice and comforting testimony to the fact that as a therapist it is totally normal to have your beliefs & assumptions challenged by modern research, and your practice forced to evolve to keep in line with more modern concepts.

We hope you enjoy the episode!

Alex Hutchinson: Pushing The Limits of Human Endurance15 Feb 202001:12:26

Ep39: Alex Hutchinson - Pushing The Limits of Human Performance.

Alex Hutchinson is one of the world's most highly respected authorities on the subject of endurance sports. With a PhD in Physics from Cambridge and a Master’s in Journalism from Columbia, his articles in Runner’s World, Outside Magazine, The Globe & Mail, are internationally acclaimed.

His 2011 book 'Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights?' is quite simply a 'must have' for anyone who does exercise. It was and still is THE bible of myth-busting misconceptions still found in the exercise industry.

In this episode of Runchatlive, we focus mainly on his 2018 book 'Endure: Mind, Body and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance', a New York Times best seller. The thrilling account of his involvement at Nike's Breaking2 project in 2017 is in itself enough of a reason to read it, and it has so much more. Using endless real life examples of elite endurance athletes, Hutchinson explains why our individual limits may be determined as much by our head and heart, as by our muscles.

We also talk to Alex about being one of the speakers at Tom Goom's ‘Running Rehab, from Pain to Performance’ conference this April in London, along with Ian Griffiths, Claire Minshull and Chris Napier. With this line-up of speakers, the conference is destined to be a huge success and of huge value.

Trust Me I'm A Physiotherapist with Nils Oudhuis02 Sep 201901:05:40

Special guest Nils Oudhuis, creator of awesome education website TrustMe-Ed and Facebook Group Trust me, I'm a Physiotherapist talks to us about his experiences training to become a Physiotherapist, and how the obstacles he discovered caused him to set up his Facebook Group and eventually the website. The conversation focuses on the variety of CPD (Continued Professional Development) choices out there and to what extent the content they deliver to Physiotherapists & other health care professionals actually help in delivering a better service to runners suffering from injury & pain. We also take a look at misconceptions surrounding the topic of 'posture' and discuss how clearing up certain yths can be a good way to start becoming a more evidence based practitioner. Finding The Right Therapist with Mike James and Malcolm Sloan07 Aug 201901:16:20

"Finding The Right Therapist" - with Mike James (a.k.a. The Endurance Physio) and Malcolm Sloan (founder of Sports Injury Fix). The frustration of running injury is often doubled by seeing your hard earned dosh💰disappearing on therapy sessions. Finding a therapist who CAN help you is sadly not as easy as it sounds... and we all know treatment & advice can vary considerably depending on who you see. Fortunately, our TWO speakers are at hand to try and help make that a thing of the past! In this episode, we see the return of Mike James (a.k.a. The Endurance Physio), this time joined by Malcolm Sloan, founder of Sports Injury Fix. Many therapists all over the UK use www.sportsinjuryfix.com as both a directory for listing their services AND a software system for taking bookings in clinic. Runners (and indeed anyone) are also able to use the website as a way of locating therapists local to their area with the desired set of skills for the particular issue they are having.  Runners, this episode highlights what YOU can do to successfully find a therapist who will get you back on track a.s.a.p. with minimum expenditure, and without seeing the same issue return within weeks. Therapists, we discuss what YOU can do to help your services get discovered by runners and stand out from the non-evidence based crowd. As always, this episode was recorded LIVE at www.facebook.com/runchatlive on a Sunday (time varies depending on location of guest/s). Episodes are later uploaded to YouTube and as audio podcasts on Spotify, iTunes, Podbean, Stitcher, etc. Both formats can also be found on website https://www.runchatlive.com/ THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Training for 5k with Jeff Gaudette23 Jul 201901:04:05

Jeff Gaudette, founder & head coach at Runners Connect, talks to us about how to train seriously for the 5k distance, something that a lot of runners fail to do either by choice (attracted more by the lights of a half or full marathon) or by making common mistakes. As a writer for the website I am obviously biased but if you have not done so already I seriosuly recommend you head over to www.runnersconnect.net and check out their coaching packages. Jeff Gaudette has competed all over the world and recorded Olympic Trials qualifying times in the marathon and 10,000 meters. He began coaching in 2005 while a member of the Hansons-Brooks professional team. With a 13:59 PB over 5k and 2:22 at marathon, he founded 'RunnersConnect' in 2011 with the goal of helping runners find real, research-based answers to questions about their training and avoiding the latest fads. As with all episodes of RunChatLive, this episode was recorded LIVE on Sunday at www.facebook.com/runchatlive. RCL Brighton Beard Company Special19 Jul 201900:45:32

In this 'Brighton Beard Company Special', we take some time away from running injury & performance to chat with Lloyd Kite, co-founder of our lovely sponsors 'The Brighton Beard Company '. We should WARN you that to enjoy this episode you will therefore need to fit into one of the following categories: • Have a beard / moustache • Want a beard / moustache • Be interested in beards / moustaches Lloyd tells us about how the company started, from its beginnings in the kitchen of his partner's parents' house to what is today a 3000 square meter enterprise with offices upstairs & manufacturing downstairs. We hear of the development of the oils, balms, shampoo bars and brushes, as well as reason for the recent redesign this January past. We hear some great about advice for anyone looking to grow a beard or who's struggling with getting past the first month or two, and we take look at beards throughout history, from prehistoric man through to pharaohs with false beards, Alexander The Great ordering his men to be clean shaven so that the enemy could not grab hold of their beards, plus the origins of World Beard Day (first Saturday of September). We also take a moment to reflect on why the resurgence of beards in 2013 has not yet faded away, drawing some interesting parallels with the fact that in these modern times there has been a welcomed shift in the ability of men to no longer be embarrassed about talking about grooming products, smelling good and feeling confident. We are all too familiar with the tragic consequences that can occur when men feel unable to talk about their emotions. We had a great time chatting with Lloyd and hope you enjoy listening back to our ramblings. Remember there is a 15% DISCOUNT on all products at www.thebrightonbeardcompany.co.uk when you use the code 'RCL15' at checkout. For the clean shaven of you who felt alienated by this special episode, fear not as we'll be back to normal in pursuing Sundays. Dr Rich Willy: Tips For The Older Runner16 Jul 201901:10:57

#Ep.29: "Tips For The Older Runner" with Dr Rich Willy This is a HUGELY valuable episode for any 40+yrs old runner, plus anyone who works with runners of this age! Many runners know all to well that hitting 40+ years brings changes; pace decreases, recovery takes longer, injury patterns change. The good news is there ARE specific things we can do to minimise the effects of age, plus some of the things we may be worrying about like 'wear & tear on the knees' are not actually true. All this and more will be explained by our very special guest, a leading authority in current running research, Dr. Richard Willy of University of Montana - School of Physical Therapy. When it comes to running research, Dr. Rich Willy is one of the leaders of the pack. With a PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science and a masters of physical therapy, he has over 18 years clinical experience specializing in the treatment of the injured runner and is currently Assistant Professor in the School of Physical Therapy, University of Montana. As the author of multiple published papers aimed at developing clinically effective treatments for patellofemoral pain syndrome, Achilles tendon injuries and tibial stress fractures, Dr. Willy is a highly respected presenter both nationally & internationally and his research has been featured in Runner’s World multiple times. Though Rich is sadly not able to be a speaker at this year's RCL Running Conference, we're going to do everything we can to get him over next year! Jason Fitzgerald: Strength Training For Runners11 Jul 201901:07:40

#Ep.28: "Strength Training For Runners" with Jason Fitzgerald Jason Fitzgerald finished the 2008 New York Marathon in 2:44 but with a severe ITB injury. Unable to run for six months, Jason put his time into investigating ways to not just recover but also reduce risk of future injury. It seems he found it... From 2009, Jason was able to run more than ever, achieving a 5+ minute PB at the Philadelphia Marathon in 2:39:32, 1st-place at the 2011 Moraine Hills Half Marathon, 2012 Maryland Warrior Dash and 2013 Potomac River Run Marathon. His secret… strength work.

In 2010, to celebrate & share his discovery, Jason created strengthrunning.com. It quickly grew to become one of the largest running blogs on the web with over 200,000 readers per month, and has been featured in Runner’s World, Competitor Magazine, USA Today, The Huffington Post, and most other major media.

As a USA Track & Field certified coach, Jason is the author of ‘101 Simple Ways to be a Better Runner’ and ‘Running for Health and Happiness’, both of which were #1 best-sellers in the running category on Amazon.

Greg Lehman: How understanding pain can help runners02 Jul 201901:12:58

#Ep.27: "So Pain Is All In My Head?" with Greg Lehman  - Many runners are starting to hear/read more frequently that although a particular pain FEELS like it's coming from e.g. the knee, it's actually being outputted by the brain & nervous system. An explanation of the significance of this distinction typically follows, but by then all the average runner is thinking is "So you're saying this pain is in my HEAD?" Needless to say, this can often be harmful for the therapist/runner relationship!  But fear not, because in this episode we have one of the best in the business here with us on Runchatlive to help explain how both therapists & runners can deal with such issues: Gregory Lehman. There's few who have had such a long & impressive career as Gregory Lehman. He was one of two students who back in 1996 trained with the highly respected Professor Stuart McGill in the Occupational Biomechanics Laboratory. As an assistant professor at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College teaching a graduate level course in Spine Biomechanics and Instrumentation, Greg has published over 20 peer reviewed papers in the manual therapy & exercise biomechanics field. Today, Gregory Lehman takes his internationally acclaimed  'Reconciling Biomechanics with Pain Science' workshop around the world and is regarded as a leading authority. Using his incredible knowledge of research, Greg shows how a simple yet science based interpretation of biomechanics can be complemented with concepts from modern pain science. Sadly, Greg is not able to join us at the up & coming the 'RCL International Running Conference 2019' this October 30/31 in Brighton, UK (full details: https://RCL2019.eventbrite.com). JF Esculier: Should All Runners Ne Wearing Minimalist Footwear?20 May 201901:05:03

#Ep.24: "All novice runners should consider minimalist shoes" - says JF Esculier, Vice President & Director of Research & Development at The Running Clinic Vancouver, and our special guest for this episode! In 2009, 'Born To Run' by Christopher MacDougall sparked an explosion in barefoot running, fuelled in no small part by the research of Professor Daniel Lieberman producing anatomical evidence that humans are the world’s best distance runners, meaning the wearing of shoes is therefore abnormal. In the ten years that pursued, many runners discovered the hard way that progressing too quickly into barefoot running or minimalist shoes can bring rapid injury, especially to the achilles and calf complex, but there are still many who believe that novice runners in particular should not be afraid to try minimalist shoes instead of immediately opting for the traditional heavily cushioned and structured shoe. Jean-Francois (JF) Esculier graduated as a physiotherapist in 2009 and has been combining clinical and research work ever since. As Vice President & Director of Research & Development at The Running Clinic Vancouver, a company founded by Blaise Dubois (former consultant for Athletics Canada), JF certainly presents a thorough argument in this episode, which is hardly surprising as the Running Clinic is today a leading international source of information in the prevention of running injury. Tina Muir: Athletic Amenorrhea in Female Runners09 Apr 201900:59:18

#Ep21: Athletic Amenorrhoea is a condition caused by overtraining in which menstruation becomes irregular or totally ceases. Many female athletes either regard it as a normal part of becoming the best or suffer in silence due to it still being regarded as a taboo subject.

In 2016, our special guest Tina Muir (founder and host of podcast Running for Real) was a professional runner and Olympic hopeful at the peak of her career, when suddenly after running the London Marathon in 2 hours 37 minutes she announced her retirement. The reason came soon after as Tina admitted that for 9 years of her 14-year running career she had ceased menstruation. Aware that athletic amenorrhea can reduce fertility, Tina made the decision to not only stop running but also speak out publicly about her 9 year battle to help inform other female runners of the dangers of this all too often silently suffered issue.

Running in Kenya: Run Beyond Special with George Parkes and Jimmy Beauttah09 Dec 201801:03:41

#Ep13: Live from Nairobi with special guests George Parkes, founder of Run Beyond, and legendary elite coach Jimmy 'Simba' Beauttah.

I had the pleasure of first meeting these gentlemen when I was asked to help set up 'Run Beyond' in Kenya and train the team in how to deliver evidence based gait analysis using the same software that I use in my gait lab at StrideUK.

Jimmy 'Simba' Beauttah, better known in the industry as Coach Simba, is one of the Godfathers of Kenyan running, having coached athletes like Abel Kiprop, Moses Kiptanui & Daniel Komen. In his 30 plus years of coaching, he has been responsible for producing eight World Championship medals, three Olympic medals and two Commonwealth Games medals. Without doubt a truly inspirational guy to listen to. Enjoy!
