EXPLICIT: OLD GODS OF APPALACHIA RPG CHARITY STREAM REPLAY: Don't Look at the Tommyknockers. No, Seriously, Don't Look10 Nov 202501:13:54

Have you ever gotten up for a full day's work in a haunted coal mine and thought, "Boy, I really hope that bird in a cage doesn't stop singing and doom us all"? No? Then you clearly weren't with the RPGBOT crew in Part 2 of our Old Gods of Appalachia charity stream—where coal dust has claws, headlamps are your best friend, and it turns out you can get shot-in-the-foot vibes without ever firing a gun. Buckle up, y'all. Things are getting deep, dark, and very dusty.

Support MD Anderson Cancer Research

Before we go further, remember: this campaign was part of a live charity event supporting MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the top cancer hospitals in the world. Their mission is simple but critical: end cancer for patients everywhere through advanced research, treatment, and compassionate care.

You can still make a difference.

Donate today at https://mdanderson.donordrive.com/participants/9351 — every dollar helps bring hope, healing, and lifesaving treatment to real people in the fight for their lives.

Previously, on the RPGBOT charity stream: Jessie and Isaiah arrived in Williams Holler—an Appalachian company town where coal mine doom meets fire-eyed-almost-deer and fatal sermons about salvation through suffering. After a run-in with a not-deer and a meet-and-greet with Mister T and his questionable Applejack theology, our heroes found themselves deep in the mines for mandatory community service, hammering rocks for redemption.

Episode 2 picks up right where we left off: with moonshiner chaos, clumsy pickaxe injuries, Tommyknocker rituals, and a collapsing mine shaft that proves this town is as deadly belowground as it is above.

In this episode of the RPGBOT Podcast, the gang digs deeper into Old Gods of Appalachia—both narratively and literally—as they're sent into the bowels of the Williams Holler coal mine to "earn their keep" under the watchful eye of foreman Josh CC.

Join Jessie and Isaiah as they:

  • Learn about Tommyknockers—ghostly Appalachian mine spirits who love pennies and hate eye contact.
  • Perform citation-needed rituals involving canaries, fish bits, and whispered thanks.
  • Fail basic pickaxe maneuvers (looking at you, Isaiah) and experience the dark gift of GM intrusions, brought to you by generous donors.
  • Discover strange, ancient artifacts deep underground—hint: they might belong to the town's ominous apple orchard daughter.
  • Encounter a creature that definitely isn't a dog made of coal and bad vibes.
  • Try desperately to outrun physics, collapse, and tiny angry men with stone axes through lightless tunnels.

All while raising money for MD Anderson Cancer Research, whose work helps real people—unlike some podcast characters we could name.

Key Takeaways
  • Horror is better underground: Claustrophobic tunnels, unstable lanterns, and monster-dust dogs? That's premium Appalachian fear.
  • Cypher System shines in survival tension: Speed and might rolls build both narrative and actual sweat.
  • Tommyknockers are the coal miner's cryptid: They warn you with knocks—if you leave them snacks and don't embarrass them.
  • GM intrusions are extra spicy during charity games: The more you donate, the more you make the players quietly panic.
  • Jessie can shoot, quip, and pull people out of holes: The perfect outlaw protagonist energy.
  • This mine is getting worse by the minute: Strange artifacts, broken elevators, dead canaries? It's all very "maybe we leave now."
  • Basket of weird fruit: The orchard, Mr. T, and a thing calling itself "the green" are part of a cosmic tug-of-war that's barely begun.
Thank You to the Old Gods and Monte Cook

A huge thank-you to Steve Shell, Cam Collins, and the DeepNerd Media team for creating the masterwork that is Old Gods of Appalachia. Their audio drama is the gold standard of Appalachian horror storytelling—and the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game, built on Monte Cook Games' Cypher System, brings that dread to your table with terrifying finesse.

Show Notes

In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts take a deep dive into fighting styles in Dungeons & Dragons, unpacking how these choices can optimize your martial build and define your character's combat identity. They explore the classic styles available to Fighters, Rangers, and Paladins, and evaluate how each style synergizes with class features, feats, and weapon choices—especially in the new landscape of D&D 2024.

They analyze popular choices like Dueling, Great Weapon Fighting, Archery, Defense, and why Protection either makes you the party MVP or the target of everyone's complaints. Along the way, they offer practical advice on build planning, weapon synergies, narrative flavor, and how fighting styles impact your role in combat and the party dynamic.

Whether you're building a min-maxed Fighter, a divine smiting machine Paladin, or a bow-wielding Ranger with dreams of Legolas-tier accuracy, this episode arms you with the knowledge to bring out your character's best in the battlefield.

Key Takeaways
  • Fighting styles are a crucial decision point for martial characters like Fighters, Paladins, and Rangers in Dungeons & Dragons, defining your combat specialty.
  • Different styles fit different builds and playstyles. Archery is amazing for ranged builds, while Dueling and Great Weapon Fighting shine for melee smiters and strikers.
  • Some fighting styles synergize with specific feats or class features, especially in D&D 2024 where changes may affect how much value you get from styles like Two-Weapon Fighting.
  • Optimization matters—Defense may look boring, but +1 AC goes a long way in making your character survivable, especially at low levels.
  • Don't forget the roleplaying opportunities: the story behind your fighting style can give your character depth beyond combat efficiency.

Show Notes

In this chilling episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts descend into the Domains of Dread, exploring what it takes to create a Dungeons & Dragons campaign centered on irredeemably evil characters. From the tortured moors of Ravenloft to homebrewed horror realms, they discuss how to balance story tension, sustain player engagement, and manage moral complexity in games that venture beyond good and evil.

Topics include:

  • Campaign Design for Evil Characters – Building motivation and narrative cohesion for villainous parties without descending into chaos.
  • Moral Ambiguity in RPGs – Turning "evil" from caricature into compelling character arcs.
  • The Art of Gothic Horror – Using atmosphere, pacing, and dread to make fear part of the gameplay loop.
  • Domains of Dread in 5e – Exploring Ravenloft, the Darklords, and what makes each domain a reflection of its master's sin.
  • Fear and Power Dynamics – Leveraging fear mechanics and temptation systems to reinforce the campaign's tone.
  • Session Zero for Evil Campaigns – Establishing safety tools and boundaries before diving into depravity.

The discussion blends humor, horror, and hard-earned DM wisdom—making this an essential listen for anyone who's ever wondered what would happen if their party actually joined Strahd's HR department.

Key Takeaways
  • Evil Doesn't Mean Chaotic – The most compelling villains have goals, loyalties, and internal logic; chaos for chaos' sake burns out fast.
  • Atmosphere Is a Mechanic – In horror RPGs, tone-setting is as crucial as initiative rolls. Lighting, music, and description carry mechanical weight.
  • Safety Tools Are Sacred – Lines and veils aren't optional—they're essential in games exploring darkness and corruption.
  • The World Reflects the Villains – Domains of Dread are metaphors in motion; the land mirrors its Darklord's sins and failures.
  • Power Has a Cost – The higher your characters climb, the closer they draw to their own damnation.
  • Let Players Build the Horror – Player backstories, vices, and obsessions fuel the dread better than any monster stat block.
  • Evil Campaigns Need Boundaries – Trust, tone, and transparency keep the horror immersive, not harmful.

SPELL UPCASTING - Remastered21 Mar 202501:02:17

On this remastered Upcasting Spells episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast), the hosts delve into the mechanics and strategic applications of casting spells at higher levels in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (DnD 5e) and Pathfinder 2nd Edition (PF2e). Understanding upcasting is essential for spellcasters aiming to maximize their effectiveness in various scenarios.

Episode Highlights:

  • Definition and Importance of Upcasting: The hosts explain that upcasting involves casting a spell using a higher-level spell slot than its base level, enhancing its effects. This mechanic allows spellcasters to adapt their magic to meet the demands of different combat and role-playing situations.

  • Upcasting in DnD 5e:

    • Damage Spells: Many damage-dealing spells, such as Inflict Wounds, gain additional damage dice when upcast, making them more potent against formidable foes.
    • Healing Spells: Spells like Cure Wounds restore more hit points when cast with higher-level slots, providing crucial support during challenging encounters.
    • Utility Spells: Certain spells, including Hold Person, can target more creatures when upcast, offering greater control over the battlefield.
  • Upcasting in PF2e:

    • Flexible Spellcasting: Unlike DnD 5e, PF2e allows spontaneous casters to cast spells at higher levels without prior preparation, offering adaptability in various situations.
    • Signature Spells: Spontaneous casters can designate specific spells as signature spells, enabling them to cast these spells at any available spell level without needing to learn multiple versions.
    • Scaling Effects: Many spells in PF2e, such as Heal, scale effectively with higher-level casting, maintaining their relevance throughout a character's progression.
  • Strategic Considerations:

    • Resource Management: The hosts discuss the importance of balancing the use of higher-level spell slots for upcasting against reserving them for high-level spells, emphasizing strategic resource allocation.
    • Spell Selection: Choosing spells that scale well with upcasting can enhance a spellcaster's versatility and effectiveness in diverse scenarios.

PF2e Rival Academies Review17 Mar 202501:15:37

Episode Summary:

In this particularly chaotic and deeply nerdy episode, the hosts embark on a magical journey through Pathfinder: Lost Omens Rival Academies, but not before getting sidetracked by their own brand of ridiculousness. The episode kicks off with an exciting announcement about an upcoming West Marches-style game, loosely inspired by Monster Hunter—because who doesn't love a good excuse to whack giant beasts with unnecessarily large weapons?

Once they finally manage to refocus, the hosts dive into the Rival Academies supplement, offering an in-depth exploration of the convocation of magical schools, the history of the World Wound (which, surprise surprise, involves wizards making bad choices), and the fascinating cultural dynamics of Golarion's magical academia. They break down each of the six academies, ponder the mechanics of running adventures in a world of scholarly spellcasters, and try to decide whether demon hunting is a practical career choice or just a competitive college sport with higher-than-usual mortality rates.

As the episode progresses, the conversation somehow takes a hard turn into discussing the Seven Deadly Sins, leading to an amusing debate about which sin best represents each host as a Rune Lord. Things escalate quickly as they delve into personal anecdotes about gluttony—both in terms of food and drink—revealing that some of them may have majored in "College Drinking Games 101." The discussion wraps up in true RPGBOT fashion: a delightful mess of nostalgia, absurdity, and the realization that teleportation magic would make them all incredibly lazy.

Links:

Key Takeaways:

  • The upcoming West Marches campaign promises flexible, player-driven adventuring and likely many, many large weapons.
  • Lost Omens Rival Academies is essentially a magical World's Fair, full of weird and wonderful academic rivalries.
  • The World Wound was created by wizards summoning demons, proving yet again that wizards should probably not be left unsupervised.
  • The convocation of magic schools is all about rebuilding lost historical knowledge, which is noble—if not also a great excuse for some high-stakes academic drama.
  • Golarion's magic schools provide diverse character options, making them a playground for role-playing and mechanical depth.
  • The hosts love letting discussions flow organically, even if that means they occasionally spiral into completely unrelated nonsense.
  • Player engagement is key to making a game world feel alive, especially in settings as rich as Pathfinder's.
  • The historical lore surrounding the World Wound adds a dramatic backdrop for adventures, reinforcing that bad wizard decisions have long-term consequences.
  • Each magic school has its own unique theme and mechanical flavor, ensuring something for everyone—whether you want to be a scholarly necromancer or a wizard athlete.
  • Rune Lords remain one of the most beloved and terrifying elements of Golarion's lore, because nothing says "respect my authority" like wielding ancient, sin-powered magic.
  • Demon hunting in Rival Academies is not just a grim necessity—it's practically a competitive sport. If you're not slaying demons for clout, are you even trying?
  • The city at the heart of the convocation serves as an adventuring hub, making it easy to introduce characters and plotlines.
  • Political intrigue can be seamlessly woven into magical academia, proving that wizard politics are just as cutthroat as regular politics—but with more fireballs.
  • The thematic elements of the Rune Lords and their ties to the Seven Deadly Sins make for compelling character and villain concepts.
  • Anathemas in magic should not be taken lightly—unless, of course, you enjoy watching your character suffer terrible consequences for breaking them.
  • Indulging in sin can lead to some of the best role-playing moments, but portraying pride or lust effectively is harder than it sounds.
  • The book is packed with lore-rich content, though some DMs might find it lacking in practical tools for structuring campaigns.
  • New wizard schools introduce fresh gameplay mechanics, making it a great resource for players looking to spice up their spell-slinging.
  • The podcast's Question of the Week prompts some self-reflection, ultimately proving that given the choice, teleportation and summoning magic would make everyone incredibly lazy adventurers.
  • The discussion on gluttony goes beyond overeating, touching on the nature of indulgence in all its forms—especially when it involves alcohol.
  • Nostalgia plays a huge role in the hosts' humorous drinking stories, as they recall their reckless college days and questionable beverage choices.
  • Lust proves to be a particularly challenging sin to explore in role-playing, leading to some entertainingly awkward moments.
  • Cigars and alcohol somehow make their way into the discussion, proving once again that any RPG conversation can and will derail into personal anecdotes.
  • The episode ends in beautifully chaotic fashion, as all good RPGBOT episodes should.

Final Thoughts: If you're a fan of Pathfinder, wizard academies, or just enjoy listening to a group of nerds veer wildly off-topic before pulling everything back together at the last second, this episode is for you. Whether you're here for deep lore discussions or just the occasional tangent about irresponsible college drinking, RPGBOT delivers yet another entertaining and insightful episode filled with laughter, lore, and just the right amount of nonsense.

SIGIL.VTT - WoTC's New Digital Frontier with Room to Grow13 Mar 202501:25:06

In this episode, the RPGBOT team bravely ventures into the digital dungeon of Sigil VTT, the latest virtual tabletop experiment from Wizards of the Coast. They dissect its features, question its "user-friendly" design, and debate whether it's a game-changer or just a new way to set money on fire. Along the way, they compare Sigil to classics like Roll20, Foundry, and Dungeon Alchemy, discuss the importance of map-making, spellcasting mechanics, and undo buttons (seriously, why is that still an issue?), and ponder the future of D&D in a world where subscription models are king.

They also take a hard look at monetization strategies, because nothing says immersive fantasy roleplaying like microtransactions and corporate greed. Is Sigil the beginning of a bright new era for D&D, or just another way to charge players for digital dice? The hosts have thoughts, and they're not holding back.

Key Takeaways
  • Sigil VTT is in beta and, like most betas, it's got issues.
  • The user interface? A puzzle unto itself, and not the fun kind.
  • Graphics range from "cool" to "wait, did my internet just die?"
  • Three-dimensional movement? Neat! Terrain management? A tragic comedy.
  • Spellcasting animations exist, so at least there's some razzle-dazzle.
  • Undo button? Oh, you sweet summer child.
  • Integration with D&D Beyond? More like integration pending.
  • Map creation tools feel like they were designed by someone who never made a map.
  • Dungeon Alchemy is still winning in the VTT race.
  • Game masters deserve better, and Sigil isn't there yet.
  • Kids might love it because it looks like a video game.
  • Serious gameplay? Maybe in a few updates.
  • Subscription models are here to stay, and we are tired.
  • Digital content ownership is a concern, because who really owns your virtual minis?
  • Hasbro wants your money. That's not a conspiracy, that's just math.
  • The gaming community is skeptical, and for good reason.
  • The future of D&D depends on whether Wizards listens to actual players.

Will Sigil level up or end up rolling a natural 1 on usability? Tune in to find out!

2025 UNEARTHED ARCANA - The Cartographer's Guide to Getting Lost10 Mar 202501:24:15

Ever wanted to play an Artificer so obsessed with maps that they can literally teleport via doodles, yet still somehow get lost? Buckle up, because the Cartographer subclass is here to turn your D&D campaign into a magical GPS adventure—complete with rerouting, questionable shortcuts, and the occasional teleportation mishap straight into a dragon's lair!

Episode Summary

In this thrilling episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts embark on a magical journey through the latest Unearthed Arcana updates for the Artificer class, complete with a hearty dose of laughter and debate. They begin by dissecting the major changes to the Artificer's core mechanics and subclass features, including an in-depth look at the newest addition to the Artificer family: the Cartographer subclass—because what every adventuring party really needs is a sentient GPS that may or may not lead them into a pit of doom.

The discussion unfolds with an analysis of the Adventures Atlas, a magical mapping system that aims to redefine exploration mechanics but also raises questions about just how useful a glowing, teleporting map can be in the middle of combat. Can you really fight a dragon while scribbling out escape routes? The hosts weigh in.

From there, the conversation pivots to a much larger topic—the role of exploration in 5e. The hosts argue whether modern D&D has devalued travel and survival mechanics and whether subclasses like the Cartographer can bring back the golden age of navigating with actual consequences (hint: probably not, but it's fun to dream).

Not stopping at Artificer updates, the episode veers into Dragon Marks, magic items, and character customization, with the hosts debating whether Dragon Marks should get a modern refresh or stay as the Eberron-exclusive party trick they've always been. They also dig into the Mark of Healing, Potent Dragon Mark, and the Boon of Sibiris, contemplating the power levels of these abilities and whether they introduce game-breaking (or at least table-flipping) potential.

Lastly, the hosts share game-mastering wisdom and some truly absurd personal anecdotes, proving once again that no amount of Unearthed Arcana can prevent players from doing completely unexpected things.

Key Takeaways

  • Artificer updates: The Artificer class gets some noteworthy enhancements, including a revamped subclass and fresh spells that improve its versatility.
  • Cartographer subclass: Magical maps and teleportation mechanics open new possibilities, but the subclass may still struggle to compete with stronger Artificer options.
  • Exploration in 5e: The discussion highlights how D&D 5e has gradually moved away from meaningful travel mechanics, raising the question of whether exploration can make a comeback.
  • Teleportation tactics: The Cartographer's teleportation abilities could be a game-changer in combat, offering strategic mobility for quick positioning and battlefield control.
  • Dragon Marks reimagined: The debate over whether Dragon Marks should receive updates to fit modern D&D leads to a broader discussion about character diversity and flexibility.
  • Magic items and balance: The hosts critique how newer magic items often overshadow classic ones, potentially making certain features obsolete.
  • Healing and spellcasting feats: Mark of Healing and Greater Mark of Healing provide significant cleric-like abilities to other classes, while the Boon of Sibiris introduces high-level spellcasting power without using spell slots.
  • RPG learning curve: The hosts share practical advice for navigating new RPG systems, from focusing on key sections of rulebooks to embracing the inevitable chaos of a first session.
  • Game Master struggles: Balancing player agency, new rules, and campaign consistency is an ongoing challenge—but one that leads to some of the most hilarious moments at the table.

If you've ever wondered whether a magical map can solve all your problems (spoiler: it can't) or if the Artificer is finally getting the love it deserves, this episode is for you. FORCED MOVEMENT - Pushing Someone Has No Downside03 Mar 202501:17:53

Episode Summary

In this action-packed and delightfully chaotic episode, the RPGBOT hosts kick things off with a thrilling unboxing moment from Hero Forge, revealing a spectacularly 3D-printed D20 die. Naturally, this leads to a deep dive into the wonders of forced movement in tabletop RPGs. Whether it's pushing, pulling, or just shoving characters into awkward situations, the hosts dissect every angle of this often-overlooked mechanic with their signature blend of humor and expertise.

The discussion takes some wild detours, including tragicomic battles with printers, a debate on the best and worst jobs (spoiler: San Diego weathermen have it easy), and a flurry of pop culture references and questionable impressions. But fear not, the conversation steers back on track with an in-depth analysis of how forced movement mechanics have evolved in Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder 2, and Tales of the Valiant. From grappling tactics to spell-versus-martial balance, the crew explores the intricate dance of battlefield control and the ever-present struggle between player creativity and game mechanics.

Ultimately, the hosts leave no stone unturned, questioning the effectiveness of push mechanics, analyzing historical shifts from 2014 to 2024, and debating the fine art of battlefield manipulation. Along the way, they uncover the power of tactical play, uncover absurd yet effective spell interactions, and ensure that no D&D rulebook remains unscathed in their quest for ultimate RPG enlightenment.

Key Takeaways

  • Disney Whispers: Technically not forced movement, but we won't tell if you don't.
  • What Counts as Forced Movement? If something is physically moving you against your will, it's probably forced.
  • Bull Rush: The football tackle of RPG mechanics.
  • Dungeon Crasher: The best way to turn your Fighter into a wrecking ball.
  • The Meta of Pushing: If pushing mechanics don't become meta, what are we even doing here?
  • Push 'Em Away! Keep enemies out of melee range with strategic shoving.
  • Every Class Has a Move: If you look closely, every class has at least one forced movement option.
  • Battlefield Control = Power: If you can control positioning, you control the fight.
  • 2014 vs. 2024 Meta: Not much has changed, but we're still talking about it.
  • AOE Spells Still Reign Supreme: Sometimes, the best way to move enemies is to make them disappear.
  • Martials vs. Casters: Who controls the battlefield better? Let the debates rage on.
  • Tales of the Valiant's Shove Mechanics: Adds some risk-reward spice to the push game.
  • Pull Weapons in Tales of the Valiant: Because yanking enemies into danger is just as fun as pushing them away.
  • Pathfinder 2 Loves Forced Movement: More mechanics, more options, more fun.
  • Grappling in Pathfinder 2: It's a full-time job, requiring constant upkeep.
  • Pathfinder 2's Organization Woes: Finding the right rule shouldn't be harder than fighting a dragon.
  • Hero Points to the Rescue: Because failing a flat check is the worst.

Bonus Fun Mechanics

  • Hydraulic Push: It's a spell, it's water-powered, and it's a force movement MVP.
  • Decanter of Endless Water Shenanigans: Turns out, infinite water is useful in a lot of unexpected ways.
  • Grapple Like a Pro: Knowing how to grapple effectively can change the course of a fight.
  • Weapon Traits Matter: Sometimes, the right weapon makes all the difference.
  • Multiclassing = Brain Hurts: Every choice has trade-offs, so choose wisely.
  • Ritual Casting for the Win: Sometimes, taking a few extra minutes pays off.
  • Creative Combat Scenarios: Thinking outside the box leads to legendary moments.
  • Know the Rules, Avoid the Frustration: Nothing ruins a session like rule confusion.
  • Optimal Class Dips: The right multiclass decision can unlock powerful combos.
  • Wizards Stay Winning: Utility and ritual casting make them indispensable.

THE PSION REVISITED - Unearthed Arcana, Albuquerque, and the Future of D&D Psionics16 Oct 202501:04:03

Somewhere between the high deserts of New Mexico and the psychic wastelands of Unearthed Arcana, the RPGBOT crew discovered two great truths: Albuquerque has better tacos than Los Angeles, and psionics might finally make sense in Dungeons & Dragons.

We know some of you thought the Psion episode was lost forever (vanished into the Astral Plane or eaten by a mind flayer), but good news! The missing RPGBOT.Podcast episode on the Psion Unearthed Arcana has been recovered and is now live on your favorite podcatcher. Catch up and join the conversation before your DM rewrites the subclass again.

Show Notes

In this episode, the RPGBOT.Podcast team takes a psychic deep dive into the latest Unearthed Arcana update to the Psion class for Dungeons & Dragons. Between discussions of New Mexico's high desert climate, Albuquerque's local cuisine, and Taos skiing, the crew explores how psionics, multiclassing, and new subclass mechanics are reshaping D&D's design space.

Listeners will hear insights on how Wizards of the Coast reworked the Scion (now Psion) class, making psionic energy and subclass features more flexible and accessible. From the Metamorph's Fleshweaver feature to the Psychonetic's telekinesis and the Telepath's support abilities, the team analyzes gameplay impact, balance, and flavor.

The discussion also touches on the rebalancing of level 20 features, improvements to psionic spellcasting, and how multiclassing interacts with hit dice mechanics. As always, the hosts bring humor, personal stories, and some surprising local insight from their rediscovery of Albuquerque's food culture—because apparently, "better tacos" is a universal truth worth multiclassing for.

Key Takeaways
  • Unearthed Arcana brings a refined Psion to D&D, improving class balance, subclass diversity, and psionic flavor.
  • Psionic energy mechanics now scale smoothly across levels and subclass paths.
  • The Metamorph subclass gains major survivability boosts with its Fleshweaver feature.
  • The Psychonetic subclass emphasizes mobility, telekinesis, and damage versatility.
  • The Telepath subclass leans into party support, battlefield control, and communication.
  • Level 20 features expand psionic dice and late-game impact without overwhelming balance.
  • Multiclassing with Psion no longer punishes hit dice mechanics, making hybrid builds more viable.
  • New Mexico's food culture, from Albuquerque green chile to Taos tacos, inspires reflection on community and quality—much like balanced game design.
  • Listener engagement continues to be key: reviews and ratings help keep RPGBOT's brainwaves strong.
  • Wizards of the Coast's open development process hints at more innovative subclasses and psionic expansions ahead.

OTHER WORLDS - An RPGBOT.Adventure - Betrayal, Bad Decisions, and the Mysterious Coin of Chaos24 Feb 202501:35:35

This episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast has everything: magic, mayhem, and at least one person realizing they should have read the rules on push mechanics before trying them in combat.

Things are getting wild on the RPGBOT.Podcast as the crew sets sail into a maelstrom, only to find themselves face-to-face with a Kraken, a legendary pirate, and a whole lot of questionable choices. Between spells flying, swords clashing, and a mysterious coin that nobody fully understands, the stakes couldn't be higher.

Naval combat, unexpected betrayals, and a few too many reckless ideas make this one of the most chaotic sessions yet. Will teamwork save the day, or will bad dice rolls and impulsive plans sink the ship? There's only one way to find out.

Listen now wherever you get your podcasts and join the adventure!

Summary:
In this action-packed episode, the hosts start with their usual dose of chaotic humor, discussing the struggles of modern comedy, the challenge of new music, and the universal truth that nobody likes change. Then, they dive headfirst into an intense Dungeons and Dragons session featuring a maelstrom, a Kraken, and a whole lot of questionable decision-making.

As the players prepare for naval combat, they receive a cryptic coin from their patron, leading to rampant speculation, bad theories, and at least one failed insight check. The session quickly escalates into an epic battle involving pirates, betrayal, and ship repairs that may or may not have been handled responsibly. With spells flying and teamwork being tested, the players must strategize their way through chaos while dodging betrayal, Kraken tentacles, and the ever-present risk of rolling a natural one.

Between dramatic moments, surprising tactics, and plenty of player banter, this episode highlights the creativity, excitement, and occasional confusion that makes tabletop role-playing games so much fun. Whether it's using Mass Suggestion to manipulate enemies, questioning their own character choices, or debating whether dragons are friend or foe, the players bring high stakes, high drama, and just enough bad decisions to keep things interesting.

Key Takeaways:

  • Change is scary, but so is fighting a Kraken.
  • Comedy and music take time to appreciate, just like a good D&D strategy (or a bad one).
  • The mysterious coin is probably important, but nobody knows why.
  • Naval combat is fun until your ship needs repairs.
  • Teamwork makes the dream work, but betrayal keeps things spicy.
  • Players are never 100% confident in their character builds.
  • Spellcasting can be the difference between victory and disaster.
  • Rolling for initiative can make or break a combat encounter.
  • The DM's storytelling can be both a gift and a curse.
  • Bold moves often have bold consequences (and sometimes tragic ones).
  • The importance of trust in a party cannot be overstated—until someone stabs you in the back.
  • Dragons: helpful allies or terrifying enemies? It depends.
  • Creativity and quick thinking are the best weapons in any RPG session.
  • Strategic planning is great—right up until the dice decide otherwise.
  • Sometimes, the most memorable moments come from absolute chaos.

The team also gushes over the ArchHag, questions the mysterious absence of high-level NPCs, and asks the important question: Does inflating HP while lowering AC make combat better or just longer?

Summary:
In this delightfully chaotic episode, the hosts battle technical gremlins, reflect on life's existential woes, and somehow end up deep in the weeds of the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. They break down the latest changes, from monster stat overhauls to baffling reclassifications (farewell, humanoids?), while throwing in plenty of humor and spicy opinions along the way.

The discussion takes an intense turn as they dive into gameplay mechanics, lamenting the loss of beloved traits (RIP False Appearance) and questioning why poison and paralysis are suddenly less terrifying. They also express mixed feelings about the mysterious disappearance of damage resistances, argue whether inflated HP is a blessing or a curse, and call out the promised but mysteriously absent rulebook features.

Of course, no Monster Manual discussion is complete without fawning over new monstrosities. The hosts gush over breathtaking artwork, break down standout creatures like the ArchHag and the Blob of Annihilation, and voice their strong opinions about the new and improved Mind Flayer. Wrapping up with thoughts on game balance, community feedback, and whether anyone actually follows official rules, this episode is a must-listen for DMs, players, and anyone who enjoys deep-diving into monster mechanics, stat block debates, and rulebook drama.

Key Takeaways

Monster Manual Madness

  • The 2024 Monster Manual brings major changes, some exciting and some controversial.
  • Monster design trends are shifting—goodbye non-magical resistances, hello glass cannons.
  • Hags now have personal anathemas, which is both horrifying and amazing.
  • The Blob of Annihilation is exactly as terrifying as it sounds.
  • Mind Flayers got a glow-up, and players are here for it.
  • The ArchHag is a fantastic new addition, possibly leading the Hag Cinematic Universe.

Gameplay & Mechanics: The Great Debate

  • False Appearance's removal: Was it too overpowered, or are DMs just lazy?
  • Humanoids reclassified—because nothing says "fun" like redoing encounter tables.
  • Poison and paralysis mechanics were nerfed, making things less deadly.
  • Resistance to non-magical damage is gone. Bring tissues for your Barbarian.
  • HP inflation versus AC reduction—a battle for the ages.
  • Monsters now hit harder, last longer, and have questionable life choices.

Community, Balance, and The Future of D&D

  • Players expected big changes, but not these big changes.
  • Where are the high-level humanoid NPCs? We miss them.
  • Weapon masteries feel imbalanced, and future errata seem likely.
  • Community feedback is key, but does WOTC actually listen?
  • Homebrewing is both a blessing and a curse, especially with changing rulesets.
  • Clear communication is essential for any game transition, looking at you, rulebook writers.

PFE2E - GUNS AND GEARS REMASTER - The RPGBOT.Review17 Feb 202501:06:36

Pathfinder 2E: Guns & Gears Remastered is here, proving once and for all that the best way to balance a game is by strapping explosives to your boots, firing an elephant gun from horseback, and praying Overdrive doesn't betray you.

Guns & Gears Remastered is bringing more chaos than a malfunctioning automaton with a loaded musket. The RPGBOT crew dives into the madness, covering everything from gadget-wielding Inventors to Gunslingers finally getting the respect they deserve.

Highlights include:

  • Overdrive no longer punishing you for trying
  • Firearms with enough kickback to send you into the next campaign setting
  • The Harmona gun, because apparently, we needed a weapon specifically for hunting elephants
  • Gadget Skates and Blast Boots proving that fashion and explosions CAN mix
  • A technological wheelchair, making combat both more inclusive and way more stylish

If you like high-speed chases, overly complicated weaponry, and questioning whether all of this is actually balanced (spoiler: it is, but barely), you need to check this out. Saddle up, grab your gnome amalgam musket, and prepare for the most mechanically unhinged ride in Pathfinder history.

Links

Episode Summary

Welcome to the wild world of Guns & Gears Remastered, where firearms meet finely tuned mechanical madness. The hosts take a deep dive into the updated Inventor and Gunslinger classes, the Automaton ancestry, and the fallout from the OGL fiasco that led to the Pathfinder Remaster.

Expect heated discussions on whether all weapons are viable (spoiler: yes, but also no), how Overdrive is now slightly less heartbreaking, and why the Harmona gun is just excessive (unless you're an elephant, then it's terrifying). The crew also explores the absurdity of gadgets, gizmos, and gloriously impractical firearms, questioning just how many springs, cogs, and explosives one character really needs. The answer is always more.

The episode also highlights the introduction of a technological wheelchair, making combat more accessible and proving that even in a world of magic and mayhem, inclusivity matters.

So grab your gnome amalgam musket, strap on your Gadget Skates, and get ready for a mechanically enhanced ride through Pathfinder's most ridiculous (but undeniably fun) rulebook.

Key Takeaways
  • Inventors Gonna Invent – The Inventor class is all about making wild contraptions and hitting things with them. Who needs spells when you have gadgets?
  • Slingers Get Some Love – The Gunslinger class gets a well-deserved glow-up, proving that gunpowder and class mechanics can mix well.
  • Overdrive Wins, Even on Failure – Now players still get a minor bonus even when their roll goes horribly wrong.
  • Automatons Are Steampunk Terminators – The Automaton ancestry lets players live their best robotic medieval fantasy dreams.
  • OGL Fiasco Leads to a Pathfinder Remaster – The fallout from the licensing mess led to this refined edition. No new content, just streamlined and improved mechanics.
  • Gadgets Are Not Gizmos – They are mechanical consumables with distinct rules, and the difference may or may not confuse players forever.
  • Ridiculous But Effective – Blast Boots, Gadget Skates, and absurd firearm traits add both strategy and pure chaos to combat.
  • Harmona Gun is Overkill in a Barrel – A gun designed specifically for hunting elephants, with a massive 1d10 damage die, because apparently subtlety is overrated.
  • Mount Up or Brace for Recoil – Firing certain firearms on horseback cancels out their kickback penalty, making mounts the unsung heroes of gunfighting.
  • Firearms Have Range and Quirks – Scatter blasts, kickback mechanics, and fatal aim traits introduce both tactical depth and comic relief.
  • Vehicles and Combat Drivers Expand the Game – High-speed chases and mechanized warfare are now part of the Pathfinder experience.
  • Technological Wheelchair Brings Inclusivity – One of the most impactful additions, ensuring that mobility aids can be just as powerful as any warhorse.
  • Pathfinder Embraces Maximum Absurdity – The Guns & Gears book (and this episode) prove that the best RPGs allow players to embrace the fun, the chaos, and the sheer unpredictability of a well-placed gadget.

Guns & Gears Remastered is an absolute blast. Whether you're an engineer of doom, a sharpshooter with a flair for the dramatic, or just someone who wants to ride into battle on a mechanical unicycle, this book has something for you.

Now go forth and build the most impractical, over-engineered character imaginable.

2025 UNEARTHED ARCANA - FORGOTTEN REALMS SUBCLASSES 2 - Mind Magic is Incredibly Powerful12 Feb 202500:57:29

In this episode, the RPGBOT.Podcast hosts discuss the latest Unearthed Arcana release and its potential implications for the upcoming Forgotten Realms Player's Guide. The hosts speculate on new and revised subclasses, examining how these additions and modifications impact gameplay balance and character building.

The discussion covers the changes to the Knowledge Domain Cleric, which has received significant buffs in the 2024 rules. Additionally, they explore revisions to the Purple Dragon Knight, which has undergone significant changes. The new features resemble those of the Drake Warden, and the introduction of the Amethyst Dragon Companion adds a fresh dynamic to gameplay. The hosts analyze the viability of these changes and how they may shape future class interactions.

2025 UNEARTHED ARCANA - FORGOTTEN REALMS SUBCLASSES - Artisan's Tools are cool now guys!10 Feb 202501:06:53

If Clerics can outsmart Wizards, Fighters get pet dragons, and Bladesingers are still ridiculously overpowered—has D&D officially lost its mind?

The new episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast is live! This week, we ask the hard-hitting questions—should Clerics be smarter than Wizards? Do Fighters deserve pet dragons? And has the Bladesinger finally reached levels of power where even the gods are filing complaints? Join us for heated debates, unnecessary tangents, and the kind of overanalysis that would make a rules lawyer weep. Listen now before Wizards of the Coast patches reality.

Links

Episode Summary

In this whirlwind episode, the hosts embark on a rollercoaster of topics ranging from the perils of rogue socks in the laundry to the existential nightmare of troubleshooting wired internet connections. Between these real-life boss battles, they somehow manage to talk about Dungeons & Dragons.

The latest Unearthed Arcana release is scrutinized with the fervor of scholars deciphering ancient texts—except these texts involve subclasses with confusing names and power levels that may or may not break the game. The hosts dissect the freshly buffed Knowledge Domain Cleric, marveling at its new spell lists and the power of Mind Magic, which essentially lets Clerics moonlight as Wizards without all that pesky spell-slot management. They also ponder whether setting floors on ability checks is a stroke of genius or an affront to the sacred chaos of rolling dice.

Next, they turn their attention to the Purple Dragon Knight, a class previously dismissed as the fantasy equivalent of soggy toast. With new features resembling the Drake Warden and the introduction of an Amethyst Dragon Companion (because dragons make everything cooler), this once-ignored subclass suddenly has tactical depth. The hosts debate whether it's finally worth playing or if it remains the equivalent of a participation trophy for Fighters.

Finally, the Bladesinger Wizard takes center stage, dazzling with its high-powered, glass-cannon energy. The hosts discuss its absurd combat effectiveness, its revamped Song of Defense mechanic, and its continued ability to make DMs question their life choices. They also consider whether Steel Wind Strike is a spell or just an excuse for Wizards to roleplay as anime protagonists.

All of this is wrapped up with heated opinions, terrible jokes, and an unwavering commitment to finding the perfect balance between power and design—except when it comes to Bladesingers, because apparently, they're just unstoppable.

Key Takeaways
  • The Bladesinger Wizard is so strong it probably multiclasses into itself.
  • Laundry disasters are real, and they don't discriminate.
  • Unearthed Arcana is like a D&D loot box—exciting, unpredictable, and possibly game-breaking.
  • Technical difficulties are the true final boss of podcasting.
  • Knowledge Clerics can now out-Wizard Wizards in intelligence checks, which feels… illegal.
  • Setting a floor for ability checks is either genius or blasphemy, depending on how much you enjoy suffering.
  • The Purple Dragon Knight is no longer D&D's equivalent of a sad birthday party.
  • Adding a dragon companion instantly makes any class 300% cooler.
  • Song of Defense makes Bladesingers even more unkillable, which will surely delight players and frustrate DMs.
  • The hosts are equal parts analysts and comedians, which is why this episode feels like a chaotic, but delightful, deep dive into D&D mechanics.

If you love high-level theorycrafting, chaotic energy, and the occasional rant about internet cables, this episode is a must-listen.

COMBAT MANEUVERS - Rest in Peace, Meatloaf!06 Feb 202501:04:06

On this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast - We break down the art of smacking, grappling, and generally making your DM cry.

Episode Summary:
Ever wanted to suplex a dragon? How about blind an orc with a well-placed pocket full of dirt? In this episode, our hosts take a deep dive into combat maneuvers across Pathfinder 1E, Pathfinder 2E, and Dungeons & Dragons 5E, exploring how these tactical tools can make or break a fight.

We tackle the infamous grapple flowchart (yes, that thing exists), discuss why Pathfinder 2's tagging system makes life easier, and reminisce about the chaotic glory of PF1's maneuvers like Dirty Trick and Sunder. Whether you love combat crunch or prefer 5E's simplified "grapple and shove" approach, there's something here for every tactician at the table.

Plus, we chat about weapon masteries, homebrew rule flexibility, and why new DMs should break the rules (responsibly, of course). So grab your rulebooks, prepare your trip attacks, and let's get tactical!

Key Takeaways:

  • PF2's tagging system makes combat easier to navigate, but some players miss the crunch.
  • Combat maneuvers = tactical genius – they're not just for magic users!
  • Learning PF2 is like learning a new language – fluency in rules is key.
  • PF1's CMB/CMD system is complex but allows for wild combat creativity.
  • Grappling is both powerful and a logistical nightmare – be ready to double your combat time!
  • Battlemaster fighters in 5E get all the fun maneuvers, leaving other classes feeling left out.
  • Dirty Trick (PF1) is underrated – ever wanted to blind someone with an improvised move? You can!
  • Size matters in combat – grappling a giant is significantly harder than tripping a goblin.
  • PF1 had an overwhelming amount of maneuvers, while 5E boiled it down to just grapple and shove.
  • Weapon masteries & new systems like Tales of the Valiant add more martial depth to combat.
  • Homebrew makes everything better – house rules can improve mechanics & storytelling.
  • New DMs: loosen up! Don't be a rules lawyer; creativity beats strict rule-following.

Whether you're a seasoned Pathfinder pro, a new DM trying to navigate combat mechanics, or just here for the chaos, this episode has something for you. Now, go forth and trip your enemies into oblivion!

PLANE OF CELESTIA - Its Like Being in a Casino03 Feb 202501:22:51

Welcome, weary adventurers, to another celestial installment of the RPGBOT.Podcast! In this episode, our hosts take a divine deep dive into the luminous layers of Mount Celestia, the lawful good paradise of the D&D multiverse, where angelic beings reign supreme, the paperwork never stops, and even heaven has a dress code.

Links What's Inside This Episode?

Prepare for an unholy amount of lawful good as our hosts grapple with questions like:

  • Is Mount Celestia just an exclusive afterlife country club? The ultimate "gated community," where only the most virtuous souls get a keycard and an HOA compliance form.
  • Do Celestials ever take a break? Or are they stuck in an eternal grind to keep their goodness rating at a solid 10/10?
  • Why does the seventh layer feel like the VIP lounge of the cosmos? No one comes back to tell the tale—are they ascending to ultimate bliss or just getting locked in divine HR meetings forever?
  • Is Bahamut's realm the fantasy equivalent of an armored Renaissance Faire? A blend of knightly virtue, dragon-sized bureaucracy, and the world's most rigid chivalry standards.
  • What's with the mysterious black domes? Are they heavenly zen gardens or celestial prisons? And why do they sound like the plot of a horror movie?
Heaven, but Make It Complicated

The discussion takes unexpected turns as the hosts compare D&D's Mount Celestia with Pathfinder's Heaven, exploring celestial beings, alignment shenanigans, and the sheer logistics of running a flawless divine realm (spoiler: it's harder than it looks). From beachfront property in the first layer to the moral implications of ascending through good deeds, the conversation proves that even perfection has a few cracks.

But wait, there's more!

  • Comedic interludes featuring celestial court jesters, the trials of divine pronunciation (is it Pay-lore or Pah-lore?), and the baffling existence of heavenly bouncers.
  • A light roasting of the celestial bureaucracy, because even angels probably have to fill out divine TPS reports.
  • A deep-dive into morality, questioning whether lawful good is just neutral good with extra paperwork.
Final Verdict?

Celestia might be a beacon of goodness, but our hosts aren't convinced it's the paradise it claims to be. Between the divine bureaucracy, alignment gatekeeping, and oddly exclusive policies, they make a compelling case for why sometimes, chaotic neutral might be the way to go.

Tune in to this hilariously insightful episode where philosophy meets comedy, and the afterlife gets a much-needed reality check!

TIME MANAGEMENT - Every Absolute Condition Ruins Fun30 Jan 202501:08:35

Ever wonder how Tolkien kept track of all that walking in Middle-earth? Turns out, he'd be a pro Dungeon Master. This week on RPGBOT.Podcast, we're diving into the wild world of time management in tabletop RPGs. From tracking minutes to years, making crafting fun (yes, it's possible), and throwing just enough time pressure to keep your players sweating—this episode has it all. Tune in and learn how to make your campaigns feel like epic, immersive worlds instead of endless waiting rooms.

Links:

Show Summary:

In this engaging and multifaceted episode, the hosts explore the intricacies of time management in tabletop role-playing games (RPGs), such as Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. They highlight how tracking time enhances storytelling, creates tension, and influences player choices and character development.

With references to Tolkien's meticulous use of time in The Lord of the Rings, the discussion blends practical advice for Dungeon Masters with imaginative storytelling possibilities. From tracking in-game minutes to spanning years, the hosts explore how dynamic time mechanics can enrich gameplay, create meaningful challenges, and immerse players in a living world. They also touch on crafting, retraining mechanics, and how to keep gameplay engaging during downtime.

The episode culminates in practical tips for Dungeon Masters to effectively implement time pressure, manage resource scarcity, and balance the flow of the campaign while ensuring players enjoy the experience. Alongside their mechanics-focused discussion, the hosts keep the conversation entertaining and accessible, making this episode both informative and engaging.

Key Takeaways: Time Management in Tabletop RPGs:
  • Storytelling Depth: Tracking time enhances immersion, tension, and the dynamism of the game world.
  • Tolkien as a Model: Referencing Tolkien's detailed timekeeping highlights how time can add stakes and realism to narratives.
  • Player Decisions: Different time intervals (minutes, days, years) influence character development and resource management.
Practical RPG Mechanics:
  • Time Pressure: Can drive narrative stakes but must be used sparingly to avoid overwhelming players.
  • Dynamic Worlds: Introducing world changes over time enhances player engagement.

Tips for Dungeon Masters:
  • Balanced Challenges: Avoid excessive time pressure, especially for lower-level characters.

  • Goal-Oriented Play: Setting clear, accomplishable goals with time limits helps players focus.

2024 D&D MONSTER MANUAL Pt 2 - A Look Ahead (This Took Two Episodes)27 Jan 202501:11:59

What do monks, rich people, and spellcasting dragons have in common? We had no idea either—until this week's episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast. Join us as we dive into the 2024 Monster Manual, where over 80 new creatures are ready to terrify and delight. From Haunting Revenants to a revamped lineup of vampires, there's something for every adventurer to fear.

We also explore the evolution of dragons, now more terrifying than ever with spellcasting abilities and complex mechanics that make them true forces of nature. And in case you missed it, kobolds are officially dragons now, so prepare your campaigns accordingly.

Oh, and apparently rich people might collect monks like rare treasures. It's a thing.

Links

Summary

The hosts kick things off with a spirited discussion about the finer things in life: their choice of beverages, the strange allure of monastic life, and, apparently, why rich people might consider monks the latest luxury accessory. Naturally, this segues into the real meat of the episode—exploring the juicy details of the 2024 Monster Manual and its cavalcade of new creatures for tabletop RPGs, particularly Dungeons and Dragons.

With over 80 fresh monsters to drool over, the hosts dissect everything from revamped high CR nightmares to quirky additions like the Haunting Revenant and Ghast Gravecaller. They marvel at the diversity of vampires, debate the artistic and mechanical evolution of dragons, and even grapple with the introduction of creatures like the "concubus," which is either a typo or the funniest twist on infernal lore ever.

The conversation spirals into the exciting changes coming to classic beasts. Dragons, the rock stars of D&D, are getting a glow-up: they're confirmed spellcasters now, complete with terrifyingly complex mechanics for fear and charm effects. Gargantuan creatures defy physics, kobolds are dragons now (deal with it), and green dragons might just have depth beyond being scaly jerks.

Along the way, the hosts dive into the artistry behind the manual, storytelling opportunities baked into monster lore, and the importance of keeping players on their toes with creative creature designs. Whether it's reimagined cyclopes or the Death Knight Aspirant filling the undead middle-management void, the new content promises a blend of challenge and storytelling gold.

Takeaways:

  • Drinks & Drama: The hosts enjoy their drinks as much as their discussions, setting a relaxed, comedic tone.
  • Monastic Mysteries: Monks are weirdly versatile—both in D&D and in conversations about rich people.
  • Monster Mayhem: The 2024 Monster Manual introduces 80+ creatures to terrify and delight players.
  • Dragon Drama: Dragons are evolving into spell-slinging, fear-inducing nightmares, and honestly, we're all for it.
  • Artistic Flair: The new designs focus on unique silhouettes and storytelling potential, bringing creatures to life in ways that excite both players and DMs.
  • Lore & Laughter: From Medusa vs. Gorgons to undead promotion paths, the hosts balance humor with deep dives into game design.
  • Biggest Twist: Kobolds are dragons now. Let that sink in.

  • Monster Mayhem 101: Alphabetical monster organization is here, and the hosts are split. Is it revolutionary or just Dewey Decimal for dice slingers?
  • Challenge Ratings Are a Challenge: New DMs rejoice! The manual aims to demystify those tricky challenge ratings, although seasoned DMs might still side-eye the math.
  • Bloodied but Not Beaten: The fan-favorite bloodied mechanic is back! Will it revolutionize combat or just remind us how squishy we really are?
  • Legendary (and Exhausted): Legendary actions and resistance are getting a glow-up, but spellcasters everywhere are still grumbling about those pesky save negations.
  • Kobolds: The Dragon Glow-Up We Deserve: Kobolds officially join the dragon family tree, bringing their rightful swagger—and lots of fire breath.
  • Titans, Cultists, and Shadow Dragons, Oh My!: Titans are stomping into the fray, cultists are getting a creepy upgrade, and Shadow Dragons are ready to haunt your dreams.

The hosts don't hold back on humor as they reflect on their own monstrous mistakes (Pro Tip: Gnolls as fiends are still scary) and speculate wildly about what's next for D&D monster design. Whether you're here for the laughs, the nostalgia, or the hot takes, this episode delivers.

Takeaways:
  • Monsters are easier to find, but are they easier to fight? TBD.
  • Stat blocks: Simpler for DMs, scarier for adventurers.
  • New exhaustion mechanics: Everyone suffers equally—how democratic!
  • Legendary actions are still a DM's best friend for keeping players on their toes.
  • Creature types are evolving faster than a polymorph spell, and the debate over classifications like gnolls-as-fiends is just heating up.
  • Kobolds = dragons now. Fight us.

Whether you're a rookie DM or a grizzled D&D vet, this episode will leave you entertained, informed, and possibly questioning whether your next monster encounter needs more dragons. Spoiler: It does.

PREDICTIONS 2025 - I could always use more NPCs20 Jan 202501:04:20

Brace yourselves, adventurers! In this week's RPGBOT.Podcast, we take on our most dangerous quests yet: planning a charity live stream without burning down the kitchen, deciphering the D&D 2025 release schedule without a map, and surviving the wrath of YouTube's algorithm. They'll explore the secrets of NPCs, the motivations of villains, and why humans are always the worst. Along the way, there's talk of Starfinder 2E, remastered treasures, healing potions with pizzazz, and a bold pitch for restaurants where the chef makes all the decisions (because who needs a menu?). Tune in for laughs, lore, and the occasional internet meltdown. It's chaotic, it's hilarious, and it's everything you didn't know you needed in a TTRPG podcast.

Summary

In this laugh-filled episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts embark on an epic journey across the wild landscape of tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), charity initiatives, and personal cooking struggles. First, they unveil their ambitious plans for an upcoming charity live stream to support victims of the LA fires, sparking debates about whether they should risk their lives (and dignity) attempting to cook live on camera. Spoiler alert: delivery food might save the day.

From there, the conversation shifts to a whirlwind tour of the 2025 D&D and Paizo release schedules. With a lineup of new adventures, remastered classics like Treasure Vault, and the highly anticipated Starfinder 2E, the hosts dig into what makes these releases so exciting. Naturally, they poke fun at D&D's sometimes baffling naming conventions (seriously, how many "Vaults of Something" can we have?) and share their thoughts on how remastered content enhances gameplay.

The episode also features a deep dive into the art of storytelling in TTRPGs, focusing on villains and NPCs. The hosts stress how NPCs are often the unsung heroes of great campaigns, offering insights on the upcoming NPC Core Book and its potential to empower game masters everywhere. They explore the importance of giving villains relatable motivations, lament the frequent role of humans as the ultimate antagonists in stories, and share clever ways to weave NPCs into complex narratives.

For lore enthusiasts, there's a discussion on the Lost Omens line and its connection to Golarion's rich history, alongside teasers for upcoming adventures that promise to explore bold new themes and settings. Meanwhile, the release of Starfinder 2E is hailed as a major milestone, with the hosts eagerly anticipating its innovations.

As the episode unfolds, the hosts delve into the challenges faced by content creators in the RPG community. They discuss the ever-shifting algorithms of YouTube and how these changes impact D&D content creators, while also emphasizing the importance of diversifying across platforms like Spotify. The hosts champion independent TTRPG creators, urging listeners to support their work through purchases and sharing content.

The discussion then takes a creative turn as the group brainstorms unique mechanics to enhance TTRPG gameplay. They draw inspiration from Baldur's Gate 3, suggesting fun twists like using healing potions in unexpected ways or designing environmental effects to create more dynamic encounters.

All this is wrapped up in the hosts' signature relaxed and humorous tone, sprinkled with tangents about their struggles with cooking, internet connectivity disasters, and their wish for restaurants where the chef decides the menu. It's an episode packed with laughter, lore, and a lot of love for the TTRPG community. Whether you're a player, a dungeon master, or a content creator, this episode has something for everyone—plus plenty of ideas for making your next game unforgettable.

TWO-WEAPON FIGHTING: Swords, Spells, and Audiobook Shenanigans16 Jan 202501:12:57

Ever wonder why two-weapon fighting feels like juggling flaming swords while blindfolded? We dove deep into Pathfinder, D&D, and the eternal question: "Is the Dual Wielder feat secretly trolling us?" Along the way, we debated the cultural legacy of Drist, praised doubling rings like they're the new sliced bread, and agreed that critical hit confirmations are basically your dice laughing at you. Tune in to hear us talk combat mechanics, convention chaos, and why humor might just be the ultimate life-saving spell.

Show Notes:

Get ready for a whirlwind of banter, dice rolls, and dramatic deep-dives as the hosts tackle everything from RPG mechanics to natural disasters. This episode has something for everyone, whether you're fascinated by the nuances of doubling rings or curious about how Nick Mastery can transform your two-weapon fighting strategy. Along the way, the conversation meanders through critical hits, the evolution of bonus actions, and even the enduring influence of Drist, the legendary dual-wielding ranger.

The discussion begins with a lighthearted look at how humor serves as a coping mechanism during challenging times, before diving into the complexities of RPG combat mechanics. Pathfinder's action economy, which revolves around its unique three-action system, is unpacked alongside comparisons to D&D's approach. Pathfinder's emphasis on critical hit confirmations and Touch AC mechanics gets a spotlight, offering insights into how these rules create a more intricate—and sometimes intimidating—gameplay experience.

The hosts share their thoughts on the often underwhelming Dual Wielder feat, providing comedic relief while exploring how two-weapon fighting can feel both rewarding and frustrating. They reflect on Drist's cultural impact, considering how his character has shaped the design of dual-wielding mechanics across editions. The conversation shifts to Pathfinder 2nd Edition, celebrating its improvements to the action economy and the creative freedom it offers. Of course, no RPG chat would be complete without a few grumbles about how long combat can drag on, especially when critical hits are involved.

A highlight of the episode is the exploration of Nick Mastery and doubling rings, which allow for impressive damage potential and flexibility in combat. The discussion also touches on the essentials of convention games, emphasizing the importance of clear communication, engaging puzzles, and pre-generated characters. Anecdotes about convention mishaps and player confusion bring humor to these practical tips.

On a lighter note, the hosts share their excitement about an upcoming audiobook project, discussing the creative process and encouraging community support for such endeavors. As always, they manage to blend serious topics with witty commentary, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere that listeners won't want to miss.

Listener Challenge:

What's your most epic fail moment in RPG combat? Share your story with the hosts on social media—bonus points if it involves Pathfinder's crit confirmation rules making you question your life choices!

D&D UNEARTHED ARCANA REVIEW Part 2 - ARTIFICER: I would like a small army, please?13 Jan 202501:13:47

The Alchemist subclass has leveled up its potion game, proving you can now brew life-saving elixirs faster than most of us can make a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, the Armorer subclass is out here making Dreadnought armor that essentially says, "I'm big, I'm bad, and I take up two squares now." The Artillerist got an upgrade, so you can still blow stuff up while debating whether guns belong in your magical fantasy world. Spoiler: Someone's Homunculus Roomba is going to have to clean up the mess.

Tune in for the laughs, stay for the puns, and remember: one day, Vicious Mockery might become a bonus action, and then no adventurer's ego will be safe.

Links

Summary and Takeaways

In this hilarious deep-dive into Dungeons & Dragons' Unearthed Arcana, the hosts embark on a chaotic yet insightful exploration of all things Artificer. The episode begins with a lively discussion of the revamped Alchemist subclass, where the once-mediocre healer is now brewing elixirs that can practically bring characters back from the brink of death—or at least keep them upright long enough to face their next poor life choice. Potions are now crafted faster than ever, which might explain why Alchemists seem perpetually caffeinated.

Shifting gears, the hosts don their metaphorical armor (and probably some literal helmets) to dissect the updated Armorer subclass. With options like Dreadnought armor, which makes you bigger and scarier in combat, and Perfected Armor, which adds a splash of damage and utility, there's something for everyone—unless you liked the old customization options, in which case, condolences. The new armor replication system is simpler, but as one host laments, "simplicity is the enemy of shiny customization."

Things take a turn for the absurd as the conversation veers into gameplay mechanics. Pulling and pushing creatures might sound straightforward, but apparently, it's a one-way ticket to rules-lawyering chaos. Grappling, once a staple of wrestling matches gone awry, now feels about as effective as trying to hug a gelatinous cube. And then there's the unforgettable mention of "character brain extraction," which the hosts agree is equal parts horrifying and comedy gold, depending on which side of the dice you're on.

Next, the spotlight shines on the Artillerist subclass, which has undergone upgrades that make it deadlier—and debatably more explosive—than ever. This sparks a lively debate about the coexistence of magic and technology in fantasy worlds, with one host arguing for the poetic elegance of wands and the other championing the raw, chaotic energy of boomsticks. Meanwhile, Battlesmith fans will be pleased to know the Steel Defender is now more useful, although one host quips, "It still won't do your taxes."

The humor continues with a look at the Homunculus spell, a new addition to the Artificer arsenal that lets players conjure a small, slightly unsettling creature to assist in adventures. One host imagines it as "a glorified Roomba with attitude," while the other is already brainstorming scenarios where the Homunculus saves the day—or ruins it spectacularly.

The episode rounds off with a mailbag segment tackling the question: which cantrips should become bonus actions? This sparks a flurry of debate, with one host suggesting Firebolt could add some sizzle to multi-action rounds and the other lamenting that bonus-action Vicious Mockery would lead to endless pun wars at the table.

Throughout the episode, the hosts share their hopes, dreams, and mixed feelings about the future of D&D. They long for innovative subclasses, yearn for a return to the rich settings of Eberron, and urge designers to embrace the weird, wonderful flavor that makes the game magical. All this is delivered with a heaping dose of humor, proving once again that no matter how complex the rules or contentious the changes, the real joy of D&D is in laughing through it all with friends.

PUBLIC SPEAKING OR DEATH: ENCOURAGING ROLEPLAY (Remastered)11 Oct 202501:05:40

RANDALL: "They say people fear public speaking more than death. Which means that, statistically, most players would rather TPK than deliver an in-character monologue."

ASH: "Honestly? Same."

TYLER: "So today we're doing the impossible—convincing gamers that pretending to be a half-elf sorcerer in front of their friends doesn't have to be terrifying."

Show Notes

In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts dive into one of tabletop gaming's most universal fears: speaking in character. Whether it's performing a heartfelt speech to rally the party, negotiating with a dragon, or just trying to remember your bard's accent, encouraging roleplay can feel like public speaking in front of a judgmental lich.

The hosts explore why roleplaying in tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) and Pathfinder often triggers the same nerves as giving a speech—and how to overcome it. Drawing from years of experience as Dungeon Masters, players, and accidental thespians, they break down how to build confidence, improve storytelling, and make roleplay fun for everyone at the table.

Learn how public speaking skills and improv techniques can enhance your D&D roleplay, how to encourage shy players without pressure, and how a supportive group dynamic transforms tabletop gaming into something deeper and more memorable. Whether you're a veteran DM or a first-time player who'd rather hide behind your dice, this episode helps you turn stage fright into character insight—one awkward monologue at a time.

Topics discussed include:

  • How public speaking anxiety translates into roleplaying hesitation
  • Techniques to encourage roleplay among shy players
  • Using improv and acting tips to bring characters to life
  • Building player confidence and group trust
  • Balancing storytelling and game mechanics in tabletop RPGs
  • Making Dungeons & Dragons sessions more expressive and inclusive
  • Why roleplay and performance make better campaigns
  • Strategies for Dungeon Masters to create safe spaces for expression

Battlesmith fans might be mourning a few losses, but the class's overall versatility is better than ever.

In this episode, we talk about what works, what feels awkward, and why features like Right Tool for the Job might need a little extra fine-tuning. We also dig into why the Artificer has solidified its place as the Swiss Army Knife of adventuring, ready to save the day with creativity and clever mechanics.

Episode Takeaways

In this episode, the hosts delve into the latest Unearthed Arcana updates for the Artificer class in Dungeons & Dragons 2024. They explore the significant changes introduced in the playtest, focusing on how these updates impact gameplay and the class's overall role in the game. Key features like the new Drain Magic Item ability stand out, allowing Artificers to convert magic items into spell slots, adding a strategic layer to their utility.

Other updates include adjustments to Replicate Magic Item, which now allows Artificers to create any common magic item starting at level 2, while delaying access to rare items until level 14 for better balance. The ability to change cantrips on a long rest has been extended to Artificers, increasing their adaptability in various scenarios. Meanwhile, the changes to spellcasting focus require infused items, creating new considerations for character planning.

The hosts also discuss the potential downsides of the revisions, such as the removal of certain options for Battlesmiths and the diminished utility of Right Tool for the Job. They emphasize how these updates reflect a broader effort to refine and modernize the class while noting the mixed player reception.

The conversation highlights the importance of clear mechanics, balanced features, and rewarding gameplay experiences, especially as players evaluate the Artificer's evolving toolkit. While the updates show promise, the hosts agree that more refinement is needed to ensure the class remains engaging and versatile, particularly through the introduction of new subclasses and impactful capstone abilities.

PLANE OF ARCADIA - Imagine Weather Designed by Committee06 Jan 202500:48:29

Ever wondered what it's like to visit a plane where metallic animals roam, bureaucrats are literal perfectionists, and time is kept by a giant celestial fidget spinner? Tune into the latest RPGBOT.Podcast, where we unravel the shiny, dystopian mysteries of Arcadia! From the overly organized Storm Kings to the Spotless Seven (who are way too proud of their cleanliness), we'll guide you through this paradoxical paradise. Plus, we tackle the ultimate DM challenge: explaining planar vitality to kids without breaking their brains. Don't miss this hilariously existential adventure—perfect for your next campaign or your next identity crisis.

Summary

The latest RPGBOT.Podcast takes us on an adventure into Pathfinder and the enigmatic plane of Arcadia. While it may appear to be a utopian paradise, Arcadia hides underlying tensions fueled by the pursuit of perfection. With layers that range from idyllic to militaristic, realms like Heliopolis, and eerie features like metallic flora and fauna, Arcadia offers a complex, dystopian backdrop for campaigns.

From the lost layer of Nemesis, which warns of perfection gone wrong, to the Orb of Day and Night's unique timekeeping, this plane brims with intrigue. Its afterlife is home to spirits of lawful warriors, dwarves, celestials, and weather-controlling Storm Kings who work in chaotic collaboration. Fortitude, the unsettling gate town, is ruled by the conformity-obsessed Spotless Seven.

For younger players, the podcast suggests simplicity: use pre-generated characters and familiar storylines, turning children's tales into exciting RPG adventures. Whether you're a player, a DM, or a curious listener, this episode highlights the richness of RPG storytelling and the quirky challenges of Arcadia.

Links

Key Takeaways

The latest RPGBOT.Podcast dives deep into the world of Pathfinder and the fascinating, yet unsettling, plane of Arcadia. While Arcadia is often seen as a utopian paradise, it's riddled with hidden tensions. The pursuit of perfection—central to its culture—creates a paradox, where the idyllic veneer masks an undercurrent of discomfort and conflict.

Arcadia is a plane of many layers, blending peaceful and militaristic elements. One such layer, Nemesis, stands as a cautionary tale about the dangers of enforcing perfection at all costs, while Heliopolis shines as a central realm within this complex plane. Arcadia's day-night cycle is governed by the Orb of Day and Night, a unique mechanism that adds a touch of the surreal to this already paradoxical landscape.

The plane's eerie metallic flora and fauna, while peaceful, lack the ability to speak, adding an unsettling atmosphere to its supposed perfection. Spirits of good and lawful warriors populate the afterlife here, and societies like the dwarves and celestials play crucial roles in maintaining Arcadia's structure. Meanwhile, the Storm Kings collaborate chaotically to control the weather, offering a fascinating contrast to the rigid conformity of Fortitude, the gate town. Governed by the Spotless Seven, Fortitude embodies Arcadia's obsessive pursuit of purity and order, often to disturbing extremes.

For Dungeon Masters, Arcadia's complexities reflect broader RPG themes, making it an excellent setting for immersive storytelling. For younger players, however, the podcast emphasizes the importance of simplification. Pre-generated characters can streamline gameplay, while familiar children's stories can be adapted into engaging RPG adventures, balancing complexity with accessibility.

Whether you're looking to explore the intricate layers of Arcadia or seeking advice for crafting campaigns for younger audiences, this episode offers a wealth of insights into the rich and often paradoxical nature of RPG storytelling.

Whether you're here for the laughs, the lore, or just to figure out why a revenant might hold a grudge, this episode has something for every RPG fan.

Expect tactical blunders, dark rituals, and a whole lot of banter as the team grapples with their characters' moral dilemmas, questionable strategies, and the realization that digging up the past might require actual shovels.

Episode Takeaways

This episode dives into the intricate dynamics of a murder mystery fueled by supernatural undertones. Rut takes the role of a servant archetype, aiding Ash's character as the investigation kicks off with a cryptic letter about a savage murder. Suspicion quickly falls on the church grim, a creature that requires dark rituals and a dead animal to summon. The brutal death of Father Gustav, along with hints of financial discrepancies within the church, points to deeper, sinister motives.

Councilwoman Ingrid's reactions suggest she knows more than she lets on, while the mortician Morticcio's reluctance to share information further complicates matters. Leaf's sudden death and the sensitive discussions around exhumation add emotional weight to the mystery. Ravens emerge as ominous symbols, warning of dangers ahead.

As the players navigate ethical dilemmas, hidden relationships, and a web of deception, teamwork becomes essential in piecing together the truth. The unpredictability of dice rolls in the Year Zero Engine adds tension, while humor helps balance the darker themes. Through character interactions and development, the narrative explores loss, the importance of understanding the past, and the power of confronting hidden secrets in storytelling.

Summary

It's all fun and games until someone accuses a wolf of murder. In this episode, the crew gears up for their next RPG session in the world of Vaesen, diving deep into character creation, game mechanics, and some hilariously offbeat tangents. As they prepare to upgrade their in-game headquarters (because every adventurer needs a killer base), they stumble upon a mystery more tangled than a dice bag after game night.

Enter Carl Leifson, whose letter pleading for justice for his murdered father kicks the adventure into high gear. Is it a simple case of clearing a name, or does the legend of the Church Grim—a spectral wolf with a flair for drama—add a supernatural twist? The group debates clues, puzzles over mysterious deaths, and theorizes about Father Gustav's role while sipping imaginary ales in a bustling pub. Secrets spill, alliances form, and someone definitely makes a terrible pun about "grave" matters.

The investigation heats up with a trip to the mortician (because where else do you go when chasing murder mysteries?) and a deep dive into some church financial records. What they uncover? Accounting so meticulous it makes modern spreadsheets jealous—and a few discrepancies that point to shady dealings. Will Carl's father's name be cleared? Will Father Matthias turn out to be friend, foe, or something in between? And most importantly, will the group ever stop arguing over whether or not their wolf-themed theories hold water?

Tune in for laughs, lore, and the occasional existential crisis as our adventurers tackle a mystery that's part ghost story, part detective drama, and all chaotic energy.

UNEARTHED ARCANA THE PSION - Breaking brains and game balance: mind powers or just headaches?09 Oct 202501:17:57

BIG IMPORTANT NOTE: This episode covers the first UA Psion version. We have an upcoming episode discussing the updated version.

Wizards of the Coast is back at it again with another Unearthed Arcana, this time dropping the Psion class on our laps. It's psionics, but not like you've ever seen before—or maybe exactly like you've seen before if you remember the Mystic. Is this bold new innovation, or are we just telepathically dragging a corpse of old ideas across the table? Either way, we've got thoughts, strong feelings, and maybe some psychic damage to hand out."

Looking for a place to debate game mechanics, share your homebrew subclasses, or complain about the Telepath subclass with like-minded nerds? The RPGBOT.Discord is your new psionic hive mind. Show Notes

Note that we recorded this episode for the first UA Psion and it didn't get through the release queue until we got the updated UA. Stay tuned for another round of Psion discussion!

In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we dive into Wizards of the Coast's latest Unearthed Arcana release: the Psion class, the long-awaited return of psionics to Dungeons & Dragons. The hosts break down the mechanics, subclasses, and overall design philosophy, while debating whether psionics should feel truly distinct from traditional spellcasting.

From reclaiming language in gaming communities to cancel culture in tabletop RPGs, we go beyond crunch to talk about the culture of gaming itself. Along the way, we unpack how resource management systems can either enhance or bog down gameplay, and why community feedback is essential in shaping Unearthed Arcana content.

The Psion's subclasses get a critical spotlight:

  • The Metamorph subclass shines as a creative standout (though oddly misplaced).
  • The Psywarper and Psykinetic subclasses leave us underwhelmed and wishing for more.
  • The Telepath subclass earns the dubious honor of "worst in show," with lackluster mechanics and little to inspire players.

The verdict? Psionics in D&D need innovation, not imitation. The Psion is a step in the right direction, but its mode resource system and subclass design need reevaluation to deliver the unique identity players crave.

Key Takeaways
  • Reclaiming language matters: language in RPGs reflects broader culture, and reclaiming terms can empower communities.
  • Cancel culture impacts tabletop: even beloved creators and mechanics can suddenly face backlash.
  • Psionics should feel distinct: the Psion class needs stronger separation from traditional spellcasting.
  • Resource management is tricky: the mode pool system is seen as overly complex and clunky.
  • Community feedback is critical: Unearthed Arcana exists to refine designs, and this playtest needs serious revision.
  • Subclass performance varies widely: Metamorph is a bright spot, while Cywarper, Psykinetic, and especially Telepath fall flat.
  • Innovation drives class design: breaking free from spell slot mechanics could create exciting new possibilities.
  • Class identity is essential: without uniqueness, psionics risk feeling like "just another caster."
  • Hope for the future: the hosts remain optimistic that psionics can evolve into something fresh and balanced in future iterations.

Cinematic scenarios and simplified resource management can elevate player engagement, while pre-generated characters and storytelling mechanics provide fresh dynamics for immersive gameplay.

Exploring specific genres, like space horror, post-apocalyptic worlds, or teenage superhero drama in Masks, can help groups find the perfect game. Beloved franchises like Star Wars RPG and Marvel Multiverse capture iconic elements, while innovative hybrids like Cyberpunk and Shadowrun blend themes in exciting ways.

Lesser-known RPGs often hide creative gems, and one-page RPGs stand out as quick, accessible options for introducing new players or enjoying fast-paced fun. Ultimately, balancing crunch with accessibility and understanding player preferences ensures a great tabletop experience for everyone.
