Want to Ride Better Under Pressure? Talk to Yourself Like THIS | Podcast #6626 Sep 202600:22:29

Why do MTB skills seem to disappear the moment you feel scared, frustrated, overwhelmed or under pressure? You KNOW how to brake. You KNOW where to look. You KNOW what your body should be doing — and yet, on a difficult section of trail, suddenly none of it seems accessible. In previous episodes I've talked about how a lack of automaticity may be the cause, in THIS episode we talk about how you may be sabotaging yourself mentally!

Because maybe it's the way you talk to yourself. In this episode of the Ride & Inspire RAWcast, we explore a sport psychology tool called Ileism. It's actually ridiculously simple — but psychological and neuroscience research into self-distancing and emotion regulation helps explain why changing the way we talk to ourselves can influence how we respond under pressure.

In this episode, you'll learn:
  • Why your MTB skills can feel inaccessible when pressure rises
  • How self-talk influences fear, attention and performance
  • What third-person self-talk and ileism are
  • Why psychological distance can help us regulate emotions
  • Practical examples on how to replace identity-based thoughts with useful process cues
  • How to coach yourself through difficult MTB sections
  • Why the RIGHT technical cues still matter
  • How this technique can also help with overwhelm, procrastination and stressful situations away from the bike

Because becoming a better mountain biker isn't "just" about learning what your body needs to do. It's also about learning how to "coach" your brain when it matters.

Try the practical self-talk exercise from this episode on your next ride and notice what changes. And DO share it with me 😍

📚 Research mentioned in this podcast:

Kross et al. (2014): Self-talk as a regulatory mechanism: how you do it matters.
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, PMID: 24467424
Across seven studies (N=585), participants used either first-person language or non-first-person language (their own name/other pronouns) when thinking about themselves. Third-person/non-first-person self-talk increased self-distancing. Under social stress, these participants showed less distress and better performance, including during public speaking. They also tended to appraise future stressful situations more as challenges and less as threats.

Lieberman et al. (2007): Putting feelings into words and the brain, PMID: 17576282
In an fMRI experiment, labeling emotional stimuli was associated with reduced amygdala/limbic responses: Useful evidence that language and emotional labeling can alter measurable neural responses.

Moser et al. (2017): Third-person self-talk facilitates emotion regulation without engaging cognitive control: Converging evidence from ERP and fMRI, PMID: 28674404
Using EEG/ERP and fMRI, the researchers found evidence that third-person self-talk facilitated emotion regulation without requiring greater cognitive-control engagement. A strong basis that this can be useful when cognitive resources are already under pressure.

Anxious About Group Rides? Try This Neuroscience-Based “Brain Hack” | Podcast #6512 Sep 202600:09:08

Do MTB group rides make you nervous? Maybe you're worried you'll be too slow, hold everyone back, or won't be able to ride all the technical sections. Or you have anxiety about another topic and are looking for a simple, yet effective method to help with it? In this episode of the Ride & Inspire RAWcast, we explore the psychology and neuroscience of reframing — and why it is much more than motivational positive thinking.

I’ll introduce you to research by Alison Wood Brooks showing how changing what you label your emotions as can influence performance without ignoring the emotion. And, most importantly, we’ll translate the science directly to mountain biking and use "ride anxiety" as a practical example.

You'll learn how to reframe common pre-ride thoughts such as:

“What if I’m too slow?”

“What if I’m the slowest rider?”

“What if I can’t ride all the sections?”

“What if I hold everyone back?”

I’ll also introduce the simple Roxybike MAP Method:

Meaning – Adjust – Proceed, which you can use on your next group ride, during MTB practice, or in stressful situations in everyday life. Because stress itself isn't necessarily the enemy. What matters is the meaning your brain gives it.

This is particularly relevant to MTB performance, because it specifically examines reappraising physiological arousal under pressure and its relationship with stress responses, attention, confidence and performance.

Can’t Focus on MTB Practice? What ADHD Research Teaches Every Rider | Podcast #6429 Aug 202600:27:18

Can you happily ride your mountain bike for hours… but lose focus after ten minutes of deliberate skills practice? Or you feel like you're just SO inconsistent with your performance? If you have ADHD — or simply struggle with concentration, inconsistency or getting overwhelmed by too many instructions — the problem may not be your ability to learn. It may be the way you’re practising.

In this episode, I look at what science tells us about ADHD, attention and motor learning — and translate it into practical MTB training for every adult brain, not just neurodivergent brains 🧠

We talk about:

  • why ADHD does not simply mean “you can't concentrate”
  • why performance can fluctuate even when you already know a skill
  • research son how to produce better motor learning in adults with ADHD
  • does more repetitions do not automatically equal more learning?
  • how working-memory overload can make MTB coaching cues counterproductive
  • why making a task harder doesn't necessarily make it a better learning task
  • how fear, speed, terrain and social pressure increase the effective difficulty of a skill
  • what makes complex MTB skills easier to learn
  • how immediate feedback and visible progress can help (and why this does NOT mean you need a coach by your side...!)
  • why novelty is useful — but constantly changing drills isn't what that means
  • what research says about aerobic exercise, executive function and motor learning in adults with ADHD

And I give you a very simple practice structure to try:

ONE — FIVE — CHECK

This is the step-by-step DROP TUTORIAL I talk about: https://youtu.be/cf6vSUtNKYY?is=y4ym92qogtoyBOcp&list=PLwfXYMc609PWCk0Gs4BWHsVBNQJYG7Boz&si=rQ16psvciW_ZyQbR

Note: “Neurodivergent” is not a medical diagnosis itself; it’s a broad umbrella term for brains that function in ways that differ from what is considered neurotypical. ADHD is commonly included under that umbrella, along with autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia and some other neurological/developmental differences.

Are You Really a Negative Person? Why Your Brain Thinks So—and How MTB Can Help | Podcast #6308 Aug 202600:17:02

You'd like to be more optimistic or positive? Then this episode is for you! Today we explore a fascinating insight from neuroscience: your brain is not a passive observer of reality. It's a prediction machine that constantly looks for evidence to support what it already believes. And you can LEVERAGE this to become more positive, courageous or in fact, almost anything you think you're NOT!

If you've ever caught yourself saying:
👉 "I'm just not confident."
👉 "I'm not athletic."
👉 "I'm too old."
👉 "I'm a negative person."

...this episode is for you.

You'll learn how to influence these labels, why two riders can have completely different experiences on the exact same trail and most importantly, you'll discover how mountain biking can become a powerful tool for changing ingrained patterns. Using examples from the free Trackstand Challenge, I explain how bike skills practice can help train attention, build resilience, strengthen healthier thought patterns, and create evidence that challenges limiting beliefs.

In this episode:
• Why does negative thinking feel so automatic?
• How do self-fulfilling prophecies work?
• How does ad adult brain learn?
• Why is attention one of the most powerful training tools you have?
• What's the difference between a thought and a label?
• How can trackstand practice help rewire your brain?

The 3 Brain Exercises Every Mountain Biker Over 40 Should Do | Podcast #6225 Jul 202600:09:04

Most mountain bikers think getting better means riding more, training harder, or improving fitness. But what if the biggest limiter after 40 isn't your fitness at all? What if it's your nervous system?

In this episode, we explore three surprisingly simple exercises that neuroscience suggests can help maintain and improve the systems that matter most for mountain biking: balance, vision, and brain function.

You'll learn why many age-related changes are not simply the result of getting older, and why training the systems that support coordination, confidence, and control on the bike matters!

We discuss:

• Why balance is one of the first abilities to decline with age
• How vision affects line choice, timing, and confidence on trails
• The surprising connection between smell, brain health, and decision-making
• Why mountain biking is fundamentally a coordination sport
• How your nervous system influences confidence and fear on the trail
• Simple daily exercises you can start today—without even touching your bike

Whether you're 40 or 70, or simply want to keep riding strong for decades to come, this episode will help you understand why training your brain may be just as important as training your body.

Your Brain Is Exhausted. Here's What Finally Helped Mine | Podcast #6110 Jul 202600:17:44

Do you ever finish a day feeling mentally exhausted... even though it doesn't feel like you've actually done that much? A few weeks ago, I disappeared for two weeks. No Instagram. No YouTube. No comments, emails, or analytics. Ironically, it wasn't the holiday we'd planned. Berni came down with COVID the day before we left, so instead of traveling, we spent most of our time at home. Looking back, that unexpected change became a gift. In this episode, I read an article that perfectly describes what so many of us are experiencing without realizing it: a brain overloaded by constant notifications, endless information, and the pressure to always stay connected. This isn't an anti-phone or anti-social media episode. Technology allows me to coach mountain bikers all over the world, build an amazing community, and do work I genuinely love. But like any powerful tool, it works best when we're in control of it—not the other way around.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Why your brain feels exhausted in today's digital world
  • What constant task-switching is doing to your attention
  • The surprising benefits of boredom
  • What these digital sabbaths give me
  • Small changes that can help you regain focus without giving up technology

If you've ever struggled to concentrate, found yourself reaching for your phone without thinking, or simply felt mentally "fried," I think you'll find something valuable in this episode.

This is the article I read in this episode: Steve Magness: A Digital Survival Guide

I'd love to hear your thoughts after listening. Have you ever taken a digital break? And if not... would you?
Why ADHD, Fear or Self-Doubt Don't Have To Define You | Nir Eyal Part 3/3 Podcast #6030 Jun 202600:22:12

Starting with a simple mountain biking example ("I'm bad at left corners") the conversation expands into a much deeper discussion about ADHD, fear, confidence, labels, self-concept, and why what comes after the words "I am" may shape your future more than you realize. Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs begin when we stop saying "This is who I am" and start saying "This is what I'm learning."

Because the thing is, many of us carry labels we've repeated for years:

"I have ADHD."
"I'm not confident."
"I'm bad at this."
"I'm just an anxious person."
"I'm not athletic."
"I've always been this way."

But what if some of those labels have quietly become limitations? In this final part of my conversation with bestselling author Nir Eyal (Hooked, Indistractable, Beyond Belief), we explore the powerful connection between identity, self-belief, and human potential. Nir shares his own experience with ADHD and explains why diagnoses, labels, and personality traits can sometimes become self-fulfilling prophecies that keep us stuck, because they can narrow what we believe is possible.

🎙️ Listen to episode 1 here and episode 2 here 🙂

We also discuss:

✅ Why labels can become limits (and how MTB Skills training can help with ADHD)
✅ The surprising downside of identifying too strongly with a diagnosis
✅ ADHD, attention, focus, and learning new skills
✅ Why "I'm bad at this" is rarely a useful belief
✅ The importance of the word "yet" in skill development
✅ How mountain biking can challenge limiting identities
✅ Why confidence requires evidence, not blind faith
✅ The difference between faith and belief
✅ Why persistence matters more than talent in long-term success
✅ How to stop letting fear and self-doubt define you

Whether you're struggling with confidence, anxiety, ADHD, skill progression, or simply feeling stuck in an old version of yourself, this conversation offers a powerful reminder:

You are not your labels.

How to Change a Limiting Belief in Minutes | Nir Eyal Part 2/3 Podcast #5921 Jun 202600:24:21

What if the biggest thing holding you back is a belief you've never questioned? In this special interview (part 2 of 3) with bestselling author Nir Eyal (Hooked, Indistractable, Beyond Belief), we move from understanding beliefs to learning how to change them.

Many of us can recognize limiting beliefs:

"I'm too old."
"I'm not good at this."
"I don't have time."
"I'll never get better."

But once you've identified a limiting belief, what do you do next?

In this episode, Nir shares the most powerful mindset exercise I've ever learned—a simple but profound framework for questioning the stories that create suffering and keep us stuck.

Using real-life examples, including a story about his own mother, Nir explains how to uncover hidden assumptions, challenge long-held beliefs, and replace them with beliefs that create more freedom, motivation, and possibility.

We also discuss:

✅ Why people stay stuck even when they know what to do
✅ The difference between facts and interpretations
✅ Byron Katie's powerful belief-questioning process
✅ The four questions that can reveal hidden assumptions
✅ The "turnaround" technique for creating new perspectives
✅ Why venting often reinforces suffering rather than reducing it
✅ Why we don't see people as they are—we see them as we believe them to be
✅ How liberating beliefs increase motivation and reduce suffering
✅ Why looking for evidence matters when creating lasting change

Whether your challenge is mountain biking, relationships, health, work, or confidence, this episode offers a practical framework you can start using immediately.

Your Beliefs About Aging Can Add (or Take Away) 7.5 Years of Your Life | Nir Eyal 1/3 - Podcast #5807 Jun 202600:14:30

What if one of the strongest predictors of how long you live isn't your diet, fitness routine, or supplements... but your beliefs about aging? In this special interview (part 1 of 3) with bestselling author Nir Eyal (Hooked, Indistractable, Beyond Belief), we explore the surprising science behind beliefs and how they shape what we see, feel, and ultimately do.

Many riders over 35 tell themselves:
"I'm too old."
"I'm not athletic enough."
"Mountain biking is too dangerous."
But what if these aren't facts at all?

In this first part of our conversation, Nir explains the difference between facts, faith, and beliefs, why beliefs are powerful predictions about the future, and how they can become self-fulfilling prophecies that influence everything from confidence and performance to health and longevity.

🎥 Watch the entire interview as a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHtezlTRuYo&list=PLwfXYMc609PXz3fHAWMt5HLdLUS5_KiQ-&index=2

We also discuss:

✅ Why beliefs are tools, not truths
✅ The surprising research linking positive views of aging to longer life expectancy
✅ How beliefs influence behavior and biology
✅ Why we often see evidence that confirms what we already believe
✅ The connection between mountain biking, confidence, and personal growth
✅ Why it's never too late to learn new skills

Flats vs. Clipless: Which Pedals Make You a Better Rider? (According to Science) #5725 May 202600:12:33

Which pedals actually improve your mountain biking skills faster: flat pedals or clipless (clip-in) pedals? In this episode we break down the science behind flat pedals vs. clipless pedals, not from a tribal “this is better” perspective, but through the lens of neuroscience, motor learning and coordination training. If you want to develop better long-term coordination, balance, timing, pressure control and technical understanding of the bike, this episode is for you.

In this episode, we explore:

- why coordination matters more than most riders think

- how sensory feedback through your feet affects riding

- how fear and tension influence learning

- how skills transfer from flats to clipless riding

This episode is especially helpful if you:
  • struggle with confidence on technical trails
  • feel tense or inconsistent while riding
  • want to improve cornering, jumps, drops or manuals
  • plateau despite practicing a lot
  • or simply want to become a smoother, safer and more controlled rider

Why Thinking Ruins Your MTB Riding (But Is the Key to Progress) #5613 May 202600:08:59

You want to improve your skills so you start to practice. You think about your body position, your braking or your timing… and suddenly everything falls apart. 😬 This is where many riders come to the same conclusion: “Thinking is the problem. I should just ride naturally.” But that’s exactly what keeps them stuck. In this episode, we break down what’s actually happening in your brain when you switch from autopilot to conscious control and why that awkward, frustrating phase is NOT failure…

You’ll learn:

- what changes in your brain when you start thinking about movement

- why things feel worse when you go into that second brain mode

- and how to use that phase to actually build better, more reliable skills

If your riding "falls apart" the moment you try to fix something… this episode will change how you see that.

Harsh Self-Criticism in MTB: The Loop That Creates Fear & Overthinking #5528 Apr 202600:15:51

You're out on your MTB and mess up. 😣 Instantly your mind goes: “Why do I always do this?” OR “I should be better by now.” Do you recognise yourself here? Then this episode is for you!

Because THAT is a self-criticism loop that is NOT helping you improve - in fact, it's keeping you stuck. It's quietly training your brain to feel more fear, more tension, and less control every time you practice or ride. In this episode, we break down the neuroscience about what harsh self-criticism actually does inside your brain and why it pushes you out of learning mode.

You’ll understand/learn:

- why mistakes start to feel dangerous and why that's NOT a good thing

- a simple 4-step system (P.A.S.T.) to stay regulated and improve faster

- how self-criticism creates overthinking and blocks progress

- why “being strict on yourself” isn't motivating, but actually backfires

- and how to interrupt the loop in real time using a simple system you can apply on every ride (the Roxybike P.A.S.T System)

This is about staying regulated so your brain can actually learn. And once you see this pattern on the bike…you won’t be able to unsee it in the rest of your life.

Skills Training After 35 (Part 2): 5 Mental Benefits of Training MTB Skills #5408 Apr 202600:06:04

Most riders think skills training is about technique. But what if it’s actually one of the most powerful tools to reduce fear, improve focus, and build real confidence — on and off the bike?

In this episode, I break down 5 mental benefits of mountain bike skills training that most riders completely overlook.

We’re talking about:

  • why fear on the bike is a prediction problem, not a personality flaw
  • how structured practice creates real motivation (instead of frustration)
  • how skills training improves focus and mental clarity
  • how riding can become a powerful tool for stress regulation
  • and how building skills builds self-trust that transfers into life

This episode is especially relevant for riders over 35 who feel stuck, hesitant, or like progress isn’t sticking — despite putting in time on the bike. Because the problem usually isn’t effort. It’s the lack of a system.

How Mountain Biking Builds (or Destroys) Confidence — The Neuroscience Behind It #5201 Mar 202600:23:30

Mountain biking can rewire your brain for deep confidence and self-trust. But if you’re not careful, it can also train self-doubt, fear, and destructive thought patterns. In this episode, I break down the neuroscience behind both. You’ll learn how real confidence is built through motor learning, awareness, and measurable progress — and why many riders unknowingly train the opposite of what they want. I explain how skills training, when done intentionally, becomes a powerful tool to overcome limiting habits and beliefs — based on how the brain actually works.

This isn’t motivation fluff. It’s brain science applied to the trail.

Because MTB is more than sport. If used consciously, it becomes a laboratory for rewiring belief systems.

You’ll also hear the story of Samantha, a rider who went from constant self-doubt to grounded confidence — through understanding cause and effect, and how you can, too!

You’ll learn:

- Why confidence is a trained neural pattern (not a character trait)

- How to build confidence circuits in your brain

- Why awareness is the true foundation of self-confidence and what the German word for confidence (Selbstbewusstsein) has to do with it

- How the Notice → Accept → Adjust → Repeat loop builds self-trust

- Why dopamine from small wins is more powerful than big breakthroughs

- Why negative self-talk blocks learning

- Why even your posture and body tension directly influence confidence

- How familiarity — not difficulty — determines fear

- Why safe practice environments accelerate growth

- How skills training on the bike transfers into real-life self-belief

Why MTB Is Objectively Harder for Women (Physics, Not “Excuses”) #5113 Feb 202600:14:41

If you're fed up with men telling women that they're just making excuses, or you think “women just need to try harder”… you’re exactly why this episode exists. 🤓 It is based on physics, physiology, bike geometry and hormones: it's a clear explanation of why the same trail and the same skill can cost women more. If you'd like to see some great examples of mansplaining, then just check the comments below this reel, which ironically addresses this topic with FACTS already: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DF2rxqqsb78/?igsh=cm9nbGZobnUzNWti

This is not a political statement and not “activism.” I’m NOT here to fight culture wars. I’m here for truth, physics, and better coaching — so more women+ ride bikes, stay motivated in the sport, feel seen and progress faster.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • the difference between relative strength vs absolute strength and why mountain biking doesn't care that women can have more "relative lower body strength"
  • why cues like “just send it”, "stop making excuses", or “just pull up” are NOT helpful when coaching women
  • how power production, fatigue, recovery, and threat response can change the learning curve
  • where bike geometry and component sizing can quietly reduce control for many women
  • why women often ride closer to their limits on the SAME trail or when performing the SAME move
  • why women can't just "make it snappier" as easily as men.
One boundary up front:

This episode is for women and men. However, it's for genuinely strong men: the kind who can handle facts, respect context, and support women without putting them down to feel superior.

If you’re here to learn (regardless of gender): welcome. If you’re here to “correct” women’s experiences, minimize biology, degrade me or others — that’s not a discussion, and it’s not welcome here. Also: That’s not masculinity. That’s insecurity with a keyboard. 🤓

This space is for respectful, grounded (wo)men+ who value understanding, empathy, and better solutions.

Why Fear Blocks Progress: The 3 Neuroplasticity Stages That Make MTB Skills Stick #5030 Jan 202600:17:23

Why do MTB skills feel amazing right after a clinic… and then “disappear”? In this episode, I break down what’s really happening inside your brain (neuroscience-based, no fluff, in simple terms) when you learn mountain bike skills:

  • Why your brain deletes new MTB skills (unless you do this)
  • The real reason skills fade: you’re stuck in Stage 1 of neuroplasticity
  • Why confidence isn’t magic, it’s actually something called myelination (and it's simple to build!)
  • Why fear blocks learning: the amygdala rule every MTB rider (and MTB skills coach) should know

You’ll learn how to move from temporary performance to trail-proof skill by understanding the 3 stages of neuroplasticity and how to train in a way that actually sticks.

Real progress isn’t about talent or bravery. It’s about wiring the skill deep enough that it shows up when it matters. In this episode you'll find out how to do that!

Why Solo Rides Feel So Hard — And How to Make Them One of Your Strongest Training Tools #4916 Jan 202600:19:12

Riding alone can feel surprisingly hard, especially for MTB beginners, often more so for women, but sometimes even for experienced mountain bikers. Fear, lack of focus, and constant “what if” thoughts often have a lot to do with how the brain reacts when we lose external support. This episode is especially helpful if you want practical, science-based confidence strategies.

In this episode, we break down:

  • why solo MTB rides trigger fear and overthinking
  • how self-talk influences confidence and riding performance
  • how third-person self-talk (Illeism) can calm the nervous system (and why it works based on neuroscience)
  • how to make solo rides safer and more effective
  • practical strategies for solo ride safety and preparation

You’ll learn how to:

  • ride alone with more confidence
  • strategies for guided self-talk
  • reduce fear on solo mountain bike rides
  • stay focused without external validation
  • build trust in yourself

Why Your Brain Clings to the Bad — And How to Train It Otherwise #4819 Dec 202500:19:41

In today’s episode, we dig into one of the most powerful (and most misunderstood) features of the human brain: your built in negativity bias.

You'll learn:

  • why your brain holds onto negative experiences
  • why “reality” is filtered, not objective
  • how the Reticular Activating System (RAS) decides what you notice
  • and how mountain biking is a surprisingly effective tool for retraining your attention

If you’ve ever wondered why one bad ride, one mistake, or one negative comment sticks in your mind far longer than all the good stuff combined, this episode will finally help you make sense of it and CHANGE it! You’ll learn practical, science-backed tools to start training your attention today (on the trail and in daily life) so your brain becomes better at noticing possibilities, capabilities, and micro-wins instead of dangers and mistakes to build a more supportive inner environment.

We explore:

  • Baumeister et al., “Bad Is Stronger Than Good”
  • the fast subcortical threat pathway that triggers your amygdala before you can think
  • why positive moments fade unless you consciously reinforce them
  • how attention literally rewires your neural pathway Hebbian learning
  • and why your RAS acts like a “bouncer,” filtering your world based on what you engage with

How Menopause Affects Riding – And How Mountain Biking Helps #4705 Dec 202500:27:56

We dive into what’s actually happening in peri- and postmenopause (hormonally, neurologically, and physically) and how those changes show up on the bike. From fear on technical trails, to fatigue, difficulties concentrating, to the “hit by a truck” recovery days… none of this is random. This episode is science-based and NOT only for women 🤓

You’ll learn:

  • to understand women deeper and why the transition is not "in their head"
  • how estrogen and progesterone influence fear, focus, coordination and recovery,
  • why everything can suddenly feel harder,
  • why muscle soreness and fatigue stick around longer,
  • why menopause affects balance and timing,
  • why MTB is one of the most powerful tools to feel better during menopause

Attention Training: What MTB and Social Media Teach Your Brain Every Day #4625 Nov 202500:12:59

In today’s episode, we dive into something unexpectedly powerful: how a simple, honest video about positivity received 968 positive comments across 4 platforms and just A SINGLE negative comment, and what this reveals about human connection, the social media algorithm, and your brain’s built-in negativity bias. This episode is both personal and deeply science-based.  You’ll hear why authentic honesty repels trolls, why your attention shapes your reality, and how you can actively train your feed (and your brain) to give you more of what actually serves you.

📹 There’s also a full video version of this episode, where you’ll see the original positivity reel and the comment section that sparked this whole conversation.

You can watch it here:

In this episode you'll learn:

  • What humans seem to crave more than spectacle (deep down)
  • How you can literally rewire your "algorithm" (this goes way deeper than you may expect)
  • The neuroscience behind “look where you want to go”
  • Why your brain remembers the negative more
  • How to override negativity with conscious practice
  • How this applies both to social media and to mountain biking (especially line choice!)
  • Why positivity is not denial, but deliberate neuroplasticity

The Perfection Trap — and How to Escape It #4517 Oct 202500:15:40

Why perfectionism slows progress, what’s really happening in your brain and body, and how to break the loop — on and off your mountain bike.

In this episode, I dive into one of the biggest hidden blockers in adult MTB learning: perfectionism. If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “I should be better by now,” or you get frustrated when a skill doesn’t click instantly — this episode is for you. We’ll explore why perfectionism isn’t just about “high standards” but a protective mechanism of your brain, what happens physiologically when you tense up and over-focus on mistakes, and — most importantly — how to shift out of that loop and back into learning flow.

You’ll walk away with concrete, science-backed tools to calm your nervous system, rewire your brain for real progress, and finally enjoy the process — instead of chasing “perfect.”

🚵‍♀️ You’ll learn:

- Why perfectionism is actually a form of fear and self-protection

- What your dopamine and cortisol systems have to do with frustration and flow

- How tension blocks coordination and confidence

- Simple “in-the-moment” resets to shift from frustration to focus

- Why imperfection is the key to long-term skill growth

- How to literally train your nervous system, not just your muscles

How to Overcome Fear on MTB Trails (Does “Just Ride Scarier Trails” Work?) #4403 Oct 202500:08:51

Struggling with fear on technical MTB trails? I certainly did! In this episode, I share my personal story of trying the “just ride scarier trails” method - whether it works for overcoming fear mountain biking, and how I finally built confidence on steeps, rocks and technical trails that once intimidated me.

You'll learn why fear doesn’t actually vanish through random exposure, how your adult brain wires fear and courage differently than you used to as a kid, and the proven step-by-step approach to actually build lasting confidence on the bike.

If you’ve ever thought “maybe I’m just too fearful to mountain bike,” this episode is for you.

Brain Gain, E-MTBs & Inclusion: My Takeaways from the IMBA Summit #4321 Sep 202500:12:21

Last week I had the honor of giving a keynote speech at the IMBA Europe Summit in Boltaña, in the heart of the Pyrenees in Spain (a GORGEOUS riding area). In this episode, I share my biggest takeaways, how new research shows E-MTBs change riding behavior and keep more people riding longer, and why mountain biking is much more than just “send-it” culture.

From inspiring projects in Nepal, Bhutan, and schools worldwide, to women like Manon Carpenter, Evelyn from Dutch Girls on Wheels, and many others leading the way — this summit left me hopeful and excited about a more inclusive future for MTB.

Fact is: Trails connect us. Skills empower us. And inclusion sustains us.

What I learned coaching 400 riders across Europe: How skills change lives (at any age) #4204 Aug 202500:09:02

In this episode, I’m sharing raw reflections from my current coaching tour across Italy, Germany, and Austria - where I've already worked with over 400 mountain bikers in just a few weeks. You’ll hear stories that fuel my passion: like Raymond, who started riding at 75 and now (at 77!!) navigates trails with more control than many half his age. Or Sarah, whose confidence on and off the bike has transformed her and the way she lives her life.  But I’ll also speak honestly about the frustrating side of coaching, about mental blocks, fear and confidence.

This episode is for anyone who wants to understand what really leads to progress - on the trail and beyond. Because skills aren’t just about safety or speed. Skills training can change who you are, how you see yourself and your life.

Mental Strength Training: Handling Hate & Bullying Like a Pro #4029 Jun 202500:14:50

Don’t feed the trolls — let them FUEL you. 🔥 In this episode, I share my 5-step protocol for transforming verbal bullying into mental strength.

You’ll learn how to:

- Take hate less personally

- Understand the psychology of bullies and “anger talk”

- Respond with integrity and a growth mindset

- Use neuroscience to understand why hate can hurt — and why it doesn't have to

- Build resilience like resistance training for your nervous system

This is a message for every rider who’s ever been judged, dismissed, or verbally attacked for trying to grow — whether on a trail, online, or in life.

Can Mountain Biking & Skills Training Help with Burnout? The Science + Mistakes to Avoid #3807 Jun 202500:10:41

Can mountain biking help you recover from burnout - or could it secretly be making overwhelm and exhaustion worse? In this episode, we touch on the neuroscience of burnout and boreout, proven ways to rebuild skills, inner stability, and joy on the bike and how burnout impacts your nervous system, decision-making, and overall well-being. As a full-time mountain bike coach and certified mental trainer, I’ve worked with hundreds of riders—some of whom came to me during or after burnout.

Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode:

What burnout and boreout really are — and how they show up in your body and brain

Why decision fatigue can lead to exhaustion and poor choices

How mountain biking and what type of skills training can support recovery

The ways riding can actually worsen burnout

What warning signs to look out for if your rides are doing more harm than good

A type of coaching that helps riders rebuild confidence, control, and calm - which can reduce burnout symptoms

If you’ve ever wondered:

“Why do I feel worse after riding?”

“Is mountain biking helping my mental health—or draining it?”

“How do I get back in control when life and riding feel overwhelming?”
… then this episode is for you.

Are You Just Riding… or Actually Training? Why Trail Time Isn’t Always Progress #3604 Apr 202500:07:38

Are you riding more than ever, but still not seeing real progress? In this episode, we dive into one of the biggest myths in mountain biking: that riding trails automatically makes you better. Spoiler: if you're an adult mountain biker: It doesn’t. And if you’re only riding you might actually be reinforcing bad habits that lead to plateaus, frustration, or even crashes. Find out why in this episode!
Just to make things clear though: My intention with this episode was definitely not to say that a ride without progress isn’t a valid ride—it was more about raising awareness that only riding, can eventually lead to a plateau. If that plateau is your happy place—AMAZING! But if it starts to feel a bit stale, then that’s the perfect moment to shake things up. That’s really what I wanted to touch on in this episode and to give you hands on tools how to and WHY to do so!

In this episode you'll learn:

  • How to avoid the illusion of progress
  • The difference between soft skills and hard skills in MTB
  • How to actually improve hard skills
  • One of the biggest MTB mistakes adult riders make that causes skills plateaus
  • The key for safety, control, and lasting confidence on your mountain bike

Whether you’re new to the sport or have decades of trail time, this episode may shift the way you think about your own progress—and show you how to train smarter.

Harness Comparison! How Wo(men) Can Use MTB Envy to Ride Better (Despite Biology) #3526 Mar 202500:19:11

Do comparisons frustrate you more than they fuel you? You're not alone - especially as a woman rider navigating a sport that's often tougher for us physically and mentally. Ever had a male riding buddy muscle through a tricky section (or skill) and then casually tell you, "It's easy"? Yeah, we've all been there. In this episode, I share 3 practical tips on how to turn that envy and frustration into motivation and real progress on the trails. Learn why biology and anatomy makes mountain biking different for women, how to stop unfair comparisons from stealing your confidence, and remember: you can train smarter, not harder with my SKILL UP PROGRAM, starting on March 29th: https://roxybike.podia.com/skill-up-2-0-6-weeks-mtb-skills-program

Small Tweaks, Big Gains: MTB Training Insights & Coaching Myths with Dr. Liz Koch #3419 Mar 202500:32:23

I discuss the importance of personalized training for women in mountain biking with Dr. Liz Koch, Physiotherapist and Strength & Endurance Training Expert. We talk about the significance of understanding movement patterns, biomechanics, and some common misconceptions in coaching and training, address a tailored approach to strength training and skills development, particularly for women and riders aged 40+, and explore how small adjustments in technique can lead to significant improvements in performance. We also touch on the difference between being a skilled rider and an effective coach, advocating for a deeper understanding of biomechanics and movement in sports training and mountain bike instructor certifications and look at some possible causes as to WHY some coaches teach so superficially.

What REAL Confidence is: That Gap Jump Won’t Make You Happy - Here’s What Will! #3307 Feb 202500:14:45

This episode is the audio from my video, "It took me 20+ years to realize what I’ll tell you in about 10 minutes." And honestly? I wish I had heard this pep talk two decades ago. I want to save you YEARS of frustration - those painful moments of feeling like a failure, pushing yourself into rides you THINK you should do, but that actually hold you back. In this episode, I share:

- Why I felt empty chasing the wrong goals - and how you can avoid that trap.
- How to truly enjoy every ride, no matter your level.
- Why you're NEVER too old to improve (and why you should keep evolving until your last ride).
- How I finally found real happiness in biking and life.
- Why I do what I do - and how this realization changed everything.

This is probably THE most important lesson I’ve ever learned—and it took me AGES to figure out. But you can get it all in just 14 minutes.

🎧 Hit play, and let’s talk about the ride that really matters.

Life lessons I learnt from MTB Racing - The art and importance of FOCUS! #3012 Nov 202400:21:12

Sharing a few surprising lessons I learnt racing in a local mountain bike (and e-mtb) hobby race on the weekend. If you want to see the type of trails we rode and a fun little moment when Berni's mom called, then watch this short video on YT: https://youtube.com/shorts/0MOuFHehn6A?feature=share

I also talk about:

  • an inspirational story one of the racers (aged 70+!) shared with us
  • the elusive Flow State (and about how some people confuse Flow with an adrenaline rush - and the dangers of doing so according to neuroscience)
  • a motivating concept about learning, especially at an advanced age (quoting James Clear)
  • why (re-)focusing during a race matters
  • self talk strategies for more confidence, persistence and patience
  • practice culture vs. crash culture
  • how to instrumentalise mountain biking to contribute to happiness

You will NOT believe these comments 😳 - Misogyny in the MTB-World, a deeper reflection #2931 Oct 202400:26:20

How can we leverage mountain biking to make the world more inclusive? What do mountain biking ladies think about sexism in the mtb world (and beyond)? Is hate on social media a reflection of society? Is there systematic misogyny? Is it a coincidence that most Nobel Prize winners are male? How can mountain biking help build skills for life? Shred, Send it & Insane Stunts! Is Mountain Biking marketed realistically? #02407 Jul 202400:16:47

Is the MTB Mantra "Speed is your friend" true? Why it may NOT help women! #02306 Jun 202400:25:24

In my daily job as a MTB skills coach and instructor trainer I hear SPEED IS YOUR FRIEND a lot - and while it does have its truth, it also has its limits and dangers. In this episode I talk about why it may help, why and when it won't, why it can cause mountain bikers to plateau and crash, and how you can improve your skills without having to crash or "balls"/courage.

I also answer these and more questions: When is speed your enemy? Which maneuvers/features/trails require speed? Why is braking more impressive than being able to bunny hop? Is a fast rider a skilled rider? What do I work on with advanced riders? Why will women not be able to use "speed is your friend" as often as men? Is courage the trick to progress?

How to find a good Mountain Bike Skills Coach? #02211 May 202400:23:05

Are men or women better at coaching? What to look for in an exceptional MTB Coach? Are racers good/better coaches? Are women or men better at coaching mountain bike skills? Are instructor certifications important and which is the best certification? Are race qualifications an indication for good coaching? Do you need a coach with mind-blowing riding skills? How will you find a coach that fits your riding and learning style?

As a full-time MTB coach and an international instructor trainer, certifying coaches for the Bike Instructor Certification Program, I have worked with MANY instructors over the last years. In this episode I share my own and the experiences as an IT and share what an instructor trainer for the PMBIA also shared with me. I also address whether racers are good coaches and what most exceptional riders struggle with most when they become instructors.

Also, I share what World Cup racers have told me about coaching and what it does to their skills. (It's not what you think) And give you an indication on what in my opinion REALLY makes a good coach (and what disqualifies coaches).

I use it a lot with my clients in my counselling, but also with the athletes when we work on mental strength and resilience - and also use it a lot myself when I get frustrated while practicing or just overwhelmed with emotions of different sorts.

The snobbification of mountain biking - What makes a REAL mountain biker? #01916 Mar 202400:09:59

A short, but thoughtful episode about a topic, that has been bothering me for a while now... It started off with something I heard on Pinkbike about "trail bumblers"...

As a full-time mountain bike skills coach, mental trainer and psychological counselor I have seen how this aspect of mountain bike "culture" has it negative side effects.

This is the video I talk about in this episode:

Turning frustration into motivation! Tips to leverage mountain biking for emotional balance #01808 Mar 202400:16:41

Sharing some of the most common reasons why athletes get frustrated, how to turn frustration into motivation, why a FEAR OF FAILURE is stopping many people from progressing, and how we can utilize emotions we feel during mountain biking to create growth and emotional equilibrium in our daily life. As a graduate mental trainer I work with riders of all levels to improve their confidence, reduce their fears, and to perform optimally. Mental strength, if combined with physical and technical strength, is trainable - it's not magic. In this podcast, I love sharing my pro experience, modern neuroscientific findings and thoughts about these topics to help you have more fun on your bike and more fulfillment on your ride through life!

Join my live online program starting March 15th - let's turn your frustration into your FUEL together:

Fearful despite being motivated? When encouragement becomes dangerous in mountain biking #01702 Mar 202400:09:33

This episode is about something I call "toxic positivity" in mountain biking. In my experience, responsible, professional and effective mountain bike coaching is WAY more than motivating people into technical sections - actually over-motivation can be very dangerous! In this episode I share why "it's easy, you can do it" can actually hurt, where good mountain bike coaching starts, why to listen to your gut and what to do if you feel fearful despite being motivated or cheered into sections.

Listen to my last episode about fear on trails:
