Rorshok's weekly ten-minute update of stuff happening in Venezuela. An anti-immigrant march in Iquique in northern Chile culminated in the burning of the belongings of a group of Venezuelan migrants sleeping in the city's main square who had been evicted by police on Friday the 24th of September. This raid resulted in 14 people being detained. In oil news, a shipment of more than 2 million barrels of condensate supplied by the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) to Venezuela's PDVSA, the first in a swap deal between the state-owned companies, began unloading this week. Also this week, a new batch of the second dose of the Sputnik V vaccine against Covid-19 arrived at Maiquetia International Airport, to immunize the Venezuelan population. Rorshok's weekly ten-minute update of stuff happening in Venezuela. Last week, following the extradition request by the United States, Alex Saab was appointed by Nicolás Maduro as a "full member" of the pro-government delegation and was asked to assist with negotiations in Mexico. Jorge Rodríguez, president of the Venezuelan National Assembly elected in 2020 and head of Maduro's government delegation for the negotiations declared that Saab had been kidnapped by the Government of Cape Verde for more than 400 days, yet is fully qualified to fulfil his functions as a delegate. Also this week, U.S. President Joe Biden added Venezuela to the list of illicit drug producing or transit countries for its lack of action to combat drug trafficking. In addition to Venezuela, the list includes Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Peru. In economic news, Crystallex, a Canadian gold mining company, had requested in the past weeks, shares of Citgo, the Venezuelan oil subsidiary in the USA, as partial payment of the debts that the subsidiary has with the Canadian company. The request was denied on September 15th by the US Treasury Department. These stories and more in this week’s update.

The government of Nicolás Maduro suffered some major blows, including business woes with a petrochemical company and its subsidiary. Two key alliances of the Maduro government were intercepted abroad and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia, on behalf of the Maduro government, rejected a report published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. According to the August 2021 report of the United Nations Interagency Coordination Platform (R4V), the number of Venezuelan migrants distributed around the world exceeds 6 million. Olympic medalist and BMX world champion Daniel Dhers is working with the French ambassador to Venezuela to work on sports initiatives in popular areas of the country. Rorshok's weekly ten-minute update of stuff happening in Venezuela. The delegations of Nicolás Maduro and Juan Guaidó met in Mexico again for the second round of negotiations. Two agreements were reached - the first, to establish mechanisms to obtain resources and thus to address the effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in all areas; the second suggests that some of the sanctions on the Maduro government will be lifted, although which ones were not specified. Also this week, after ten years of prohibition, 30 casinos have been given the OK to reopen this week. Technology and Sesame Street come together to accompany Venezuelan migrants. Rorshok's weekly ten-minute update of stuff happening in Venezuela. In the state of Mérida, in the west of the country, the heavy and constant rains caused a trough and landslide in the Valle de Mocotíes on the 26th of August, leaving dozens of families homeless and, so far, 20 people dead. The official Twitter account of the Sputnik vaccine published on Monday the 30th of August a photograph announcing the arrival of more doses of the vaccine to Venezuela. However, minutes later, the announcement was removed from its account, and hours later, the Venezuelan Ministry of Health announced that the account information was false since no vaccine had arrived in the country. Thousands of people are still awaiting their second vaccination. Soccer superstar Lionel Messi landed in Caracas in the early morning of Tuesday, August 31 as part of the Argentine national team ahead of the game, Thursday, These stories and more in this week’s update. September 2, against Venezuela in the South American qualifier for the Qatar-2022 World Cup.

Sports have uplifted the Venezuelan spirit this week: First, Miguel “Miggy” Cabrera launched his 500th home run this week, becoming the first Venezuelan Major League Baseball player to reach the historic milestone. BMX sweetheart Daniel Dhers led an exhibit ride through Caracas. Twenty-six Venezuelans will compete in seven categories including: shot put, swimming, judo, powerlifting, cycling and tennis at the Paralympic Games, becoming the third largest contingent the country has sent. The highest ice rink in the world, located at 2100 meters, almost 6900 feet, above sea level in the Hotel Humboldt Caracas, was reopened on the 20th of August after years of refurbishment. In La Cota 905, a slum in the west of Caracas, a large group of criminals led by the well-known leader “El Koki” opened fire against police on the street. After three straight days of shooting, eight people were killed with many more injured. A reward up to $500,000 has been issued for any information leading to an arrest. In lighter news, Venezuelan pitcher Pablo López earned a new record in the Major Leagues by striking out the first nine batters. This story, and much more!
