| "Crucifixion of the Ghetto" Chapter 2 "To Get a Hit...(You haffe fit)" | 27 Feb 2024 | 00:22:54 | |
In Chapter 2 of "Crucifixion of the Ghetto" dancehall culture takes front stage. To get a hit "You haffe fit" loosely translated from Jamaican patios means to get a hit you have to be fit. During that fist year of recording at Studio K, those lyrics from the 1985 Black Uhuru song "Fit you Haffe Fit" had become a mantra, a catch phrase at the studio to always be alert, aware, attuned to both mentally and physically. Now that Henry K and Bigga Staar are venturing into the world of Dancehall Music, those lyrics are more useful than ever. | Book of Rules "Builders for Eternity" | 15 Nov 2023 | 00:18:03
"Book of Rules" Builders for Eternity is a bonus Chapter of Roootsland that takes listeners on an enlightening journey through the intersections of reggae music, history, and philosophy, anchored by the iconic song "Book of Rules" by the Heptones. The host begins by exploring the song's origins, noting its release in 1973 and its subsequent popularity in Jamaica and beyond. The discussion reveals that the lyrics, adapted from R.L. Sharp's poem "Bag of Tools," convey a powerful message about individual potential and the importance of moral guidelines in our lives. The episode emphasizes the concept that each person is equipped with a 'bag of tools'—unique skills and abilities that can shape their destinies while adhering to a set of universal principles. Host Henry K discusses how knowledge is often a source of power, and how those in authority may attempt to suppress it, leading to a cycle of ignorance and oppression. The poignant examples of historical censorship serve as a reminder of the importance of learning from the past rather than sweeping uncomfortable truths under the rug. Ultimately, the episode encourages listeners to recognize their roles as builders of their own lives and communities. The host prompts a reflection on what it means to leave a lasting legacy and how our actions, whether stumbling blocks or stepping stones, contribute to the broader tapestry of human experience. In the Season 6 Debut, Henry K explains the meaning and importance of "owning your masters" and why it's the catch phrase for a new generation looking to take creative control not only over their work, but over their lives. "Owning your masters," it even sounds powerful, like reckoning or reclamation, and it kind of is. It is the reason why 30 years ago the revolutionary singer Prince, wrote the word slave on his face, and changes his name to unpronounceable symbol. It's why even today, an unlikely rebel named Taylor Swift is re-recording and re- releasing her entire early catalog, of songs she signed away the rights to when she was just a starry eyed teen. | Forbidden Love Chapter 6: "Pass the Kutchie" | 06 Dec 2022 | 00:17:13
This Chapter of Rootsland "Pass the Kutchie" offers an enlightening and personal look into the world of reggae music through host Henry K's friendship with Headley Bennett, a saxophonist whose artistry has shaped the genre yet remains largely unrecognized. Listeners are introduced to Bennett's early life at Alpha Boys School, a pivotal institution in nurturing Jamaica's musical talent, and learn how his journey through the music industry has been one of resilience amidst exploitation. Key moments in reggae history are highlighted, such as the creation of the instrumental track 'Full Up,' showcasing Bennett's contributions alongside the Sound Dimension band. The podcast does not shy away from the uncomfortable truths about the commercialization of reggae, drawing attention to how artists like Bennett, despite their significant roles in producing timeless hits, often receive little recognition or financial reward. This stark contrast is illustrated through stories of popular songs that have reaped commercial success while the original creators languished in obscurity, emphasizing the need for a reevaluation of how the industry compensates its foundational artists. Negril was originally named Xtabi: "The meeting place of the Gods," by the Arawaks one of Jamaica’s native Taino Tribes. Cut off from the rest of the island by wetlands, and tidal marshes with dense waterlogged soil. Xtabi was a secluded paradise , where the Arawaks lived in harmony with "the land of Wood and Water..." a land they inhabited for thousands of years and felt a deep spiritual connection with. | Blood and Fire Chapter 5: "Outta Road" (In the Street) | 23 Aug 2022 | 00:17:53
Dancehall culture and the street dances that inspired it can be traced back the 1950’s to poorest and most marginalized areas in Kingston. Attended by residents who lived on gully banks and sustained themselves by sifting through garbage dumps. These were people so broke couldn't afford to go out on the town, and frankly weren’t invited , or wanted at the party. So they threw their own inner city street dances that became safe spaces within the concrete jungles, where underprivileged youth could converge and express their individuality through music fashion art and, dancing. Free from a judgmental middle class and popular culture that looked down on the ghettos viewed them as a depraved underworld on the fringes of society. . Once the phone started ringing at Brian & Henry's "Dread & Breakfast" their quiet spot in the hills became the Kingston base for dozens of reggae tourists from all over the globe. Music business people, journalists, singers, musicians. Most of them very dedicated to the genre looking to contribute music’s international growth and brand, others, Not so Much. These were selfish, self cent “so called” artists, who were all about themselves, traveling to the island in search of fame and fortune and willing to do whatever it took to achieve it. This was the new dancehall "mix tape" generation that grew up on a cliff note version of the music and new nothing of the genres history This Chapter contains language that may be offensive as it depicts actual events that occurred with real people, and is meant to be as realistic as possible. As Henry and Brian are touching down, in Kingston so is an army of foreign invaders. Record Companies, music executives, publishers, mangers all looking to cash in on dancehall's recent waive of international popularity, Most were opportunists looking to take advantage of what they perceived as uneducated 3rd world artistes. Yet as greedy and ruthless as these international companies were, they had no idea of what kind of resistance they would encounter when they reached the island’s tropical shores. The Jamaican establishment, the same power hungry consortium that controlled the Islands resources and products for centuries, they also saw in dancehall as a commodity, they could exploit.
