The Art of Saying No: The Sales Secret 97% of Roofers Miss with Dashaun Bryant26 Aug 202501:00:57

You’re not losing sales because of price. You’re losing them because you avoid the word “no.”

In this interview with the one and only Dashaun Bryant, we unpack the real reason most roofing sales reps miss deals — and how learning the Art of Saying No could change everything.

Dashaun breaks down why “no” is the second-best answer in sales, how to get it early, and why reps MUST stop running from hard conversations like contingencies, deductibles, and paperwork. You'll hear the exact frameworks he's using to train teams nationwide — saving them time, weeding out the wrong customers, and closing more of the right deals.

Plus:
- Why conversations is better than presentations
- How to flip objections BEFORE they come up
- The “door-to-door proclamations” to own the sale
- What it really means to love the game

If you want to become a dangerous rep who owns the block, controls the sale, and gets chosen for how you lead — you need this episode.

177: Elevate, Evolve, Excel: The Power of Relationships in Roofing with Ashley Smith14 Nov 202301:01:26

Ashley Smith is the proud owner of Always Forward Roofing, a testament to her unwavering dedication to helping others and her entrepreneurial spirit. With a life philosophy of "see a need and fill it," she has consistently strived to make a positive impact on the lives of those around her.

Ashley's journey as a business owner began at a remarkably young age when, at 12, she started making and selling jewelry, marking the start of her entrepreneurial journey. Her enthusiasm for exploring alternative income avenues rather than conforming to the traditional 9-5 work structure has been a defining characteristic of her life.

Ashley's entry into the roofing industry was serendipitous, as it happened when she was exploring career options entirely unrelated to roofing. A chance invitation led her to climb her first roof and perform her initial inspection, and she instantly fell in love with the industry. Her passion for being outdoors and her aversion to a sedentary lifestyle perfectly aligned with the roofing profession, making it an ideal fit.

As Ashley continued her journey in the roofing sector, she identified a critical need in her area. She observed that the "standard" installation practices needed improvement and that homeowners lacked information about roofing materials and installation practices. It was then that she made it her mission to elevate industry standards and educate consumers, empowering them to make informed decisions about their roofing needs.

Ashley firmly believes in the power of collaboration and thrives on building strong business relationships with like-minded industry partners who share her commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.

Outside of her professional life, Ashley is a loving wife to Andy, her high school sweetheart and soulmate, who is an architectural photographer. Together, they share the joy of parenting five wonderful children, ranging in age from 1 to 13. Ashley's dedication to her family, her passion for her work, and her commitment to improving the roofing industry define her as a remarkable entrepreneur and a compassionate individual.

On this episode, we talk about the power of relationships in roofing.

176: The Power of Replicating Effective Processes in Roofing with Stuart Hastings07 Nov 202300:57:07

Stuart Hastings, owner of Absolute Construction in Beaumont, Texas, has spent his entire working life in the construction industry. Following a four-year tenure as the General Manager at Williams Insulation, he seized an opportunity to work for a local roofing company, which he remained with for approximately two years. Subsequently, Stuart embarked on an independent venture, establishing Absolute Construction, a business he founded nearly 29 years ago.

Absolute Construction, under Stuart's ownership, is known for its professional approach. The company operates from a 20,000 square-foot warehouse equipped with offices for the entire staff, setting it apart from competitors who often work from their home. Stuart has implemented a structured system with production managers and estimators overseeing various divisions, including shingle roofing, metal roofing, flashing, commercial roofing, and even a fencing division.

In addition to these resources, Stuart personally owns a standing seam roll former and a 21-foot Veriobend trim folder. These assets enable Absolute Construction to offer both custom and standard roof flashing solutions for new construction and existing reroofs. Above all, the company's reputation is built on its commitment to delivering on promises, consistently exceeding expectations.

Outside of the business, Stuart and his wife own a beach house on the Bolivar Peninsula, a part of the Galveston Bay system, which they frequent almost every weekend. They are also avid travelers, adding depth and variety to their life experiences.

On this episode, we talk about the power of replicating effective processes in roofing.

169: How Private Equity Companies Value Roofing Companies, & How You Can Build to Sell with Mike Braun19 Sep 202300:57:45

Mike Braun is a successful entrepreneur with more than twenty years of experience in the construction industry. Mike started his first construction-related business while still in high school, and his passion for the industry has grown since. His first exposure to the exterior remodeling business was during the summer between high school and college when he worked for a local roofing contractor as a sales representative in Nebraska. Mike continued to work for this contractor throughout and immediately after college before deciding to pursue a more entrepreneurial environment. He joined a regional renovation and storm repair company as a sales representative in Columbus, Ohio. Mike received several promotions in rapid succession – ultimately to Regional General Manager where he oversaw nine locations around the country.

In March 2006 at age 24, Mike formed his own exterior remodeling firm, 123 Exteriors Inc., serving the Chicagoland area.  While Mike’s entrepreneurial mindset may have started him down the path of owning his own company it was his firm belief in customer service, adherence to sound business practices, and vision to provide unique customer solutions, that were the ultimate catalyst to his founding of 123. In an industry of fly by night, in business one year out the next, and sometimes flat out dishonest competitors Mike knew there had to be a better way.

123 Exteriors started in a 900 square foot office with one Production Manager and one Sales Representative. Through relentless effort and a unique business approach, the new venture generated $1.3 million in revenue in its first year. In January 2007, Mike opened a second location in Columbus Ohio. Over the years 123 has achieved its success by constantly working to be a beacon of professionalism in the exterior insurance restoration industry. The company now operates permanent locations in 6 states and averages $10+ million in annual revenue. As a result of Mike’s leadership and determination, the company has been listed in Inc. Magazine’s annual 5000 Fastest Growing Privately Held Companies in the United States four times. In 2020, Mike sold 123 Exteriors to Fred Grove, a long-time employee and the company’s COO since 2016. Mike is excited to see where the new ownership will take 123 Exteriors in the years to come while he focuses his efforts on continuing to build on the solid foundation of Elite Claim Solutions.

In 2018 Mike founded Elite Claim Solutions (ECS) with help of another long-time 123 Exteriors team member. After a pilot test with a number of contractors around the country in 2018, Mike and the team learned ways to refine the company’s processes and deliver elite service and elite results. ECS fully launched in 2019 and began building what is today one of the top supplementing firms in the industry. With over $100 million in claim volume processed, Elite is already following in 123 Exteriors’ footsteps by expanding the team and rapidly growing throughout the country.

Mike is a tough but fair leader who always strives for what is best for his companies, his team members, and his customers. He pushes himself to grow and learn each day and in turn pushes his people to be their best. Mike’s former and current team members describe him as a unique and candid leader who provides direction and high standards while allowing them the freedom to learn, grow, and forge their own path to success.

Today Mike’s decisions and ambitions are driven by his ultimate goal; to change the exterior insurance restoration industry from the inside out. Allow good contractors to rise to the top while pushing those who game the system out.

On this episode, we talk about how private equity companies value roofing companies and how you can build to sell your business.

152: Done Beats Perfect: The Art of Implementation in Your Roofing Business with Pat Readyhough23 May 202300:57:07

Pat has been in the home remodeling and construction industry for almost 30 years.  His journey began in college running painting crews to help pay for his tuition while attending Virginia Tech.  Upon graduating, he went to work as an in-home rep selling roofing, siding, windows, and doors. After learning the operations side of an exterior remodeling business, he built and sold his own exterior remodeling company.  In 2010, Pat was building a new exterior company and stumbled into an opportunity to join forces with a well-establish 46-year-old company. On a handshake, he merged his small company with Pond Roofing with the understanding that the Pond family would sell him the company. In 2012 he bought the company and has been working to fine-tune Pond’s operations to increase the quality of experience of their customers, teammates and community.

“I believe that in order to be successful in any business, but especially in this industry, you must have your mind right first. Work harder on yourself than anything else and the rest will fall in line.”

On this episode, we will dive into the concept of prioritizing progress over perfection and explore how this approach can benefit your roofing business.

151: The Power of Teamwork in Roofing: Scaling & Achieving Change with Patrick Muhs16 May 202300:55:53

Pat Muhs is the owner of Moose Roofing. Muhs grew up in a family-owned construction company and has been in the roofing business in Omaha since 1997. With a Best of Omaha designation 2018 and a repeat in 2019, and backed by numerous positive customer reviews on Google and Facebook, which Muhs says is a reflection of the incredible dedication of a team of employees who he treats like family.

“They are supported and appreciated, and the customer ends up feeling that, too,” he says. “Don’t ask me if we’re the best company in town. Ask my people.”

His German ancestors may have pronounced their last name differently, but in the U.S. Midwest, Muhs sounds just like “moose,” Muhs says. So, naming the company Moose Roofing was a natural progression, and the clean image of a strong and solid moose creates a brand that represents just what clients are looking for in a new roof or repairs.

Even after more than two decades in business, a company cannot become complacent. Every day, the Moose Roofing team provides commercial and residential customers with the same kind of care and attention to detail they did in the days when the company was still getting established in the market. Further, a successful company needs to continuously undergo strategic analysis and make changes to foster new opportunities and evolve, Muhs adds, and 2019 was one of those years.

“You must have a great culture and people who support one another.”

The result has been a refreshed outlook and a more profound commitment than ever, he says. Not only is 2019 finishing strong, but the company also has even higher expectations for 2020. “I have more enthusiasm than I ever have had before,” he said.

In addition to excellence in the quality of Moose’s work, the company has become known for its exceptional expertise in navigating insurance claims. This area is always changing and becoming increasingly more complex. The team keeps pace with training and education throughout the year and has worked closely with insurance agents, adjusters, and claims specialists for many years to maintain that expertise. It all comes down to what Moose Roofing does best: we embrace change and employ the latest technology and innovate process to stay on the cutting edge.

On this episode, we talk about the power of teamwork in roofing and how it enables professionals to scale their efforts and achieve meaningful change.

This Roofer Fired His Best Sales Rep—And It Made Them Millions with Elijah Muhm 29 Jul 202501:00:17

Not Elijah.

Watch to learn:
✅ Why having 6 owners was the secret sauce
✅ How to build a team that WANTS to follow you
✅ Why paying salaries, 401Ks, and giving trucks keeps reps loyal
✅ How caring more about people than profits makes you MORE money

138: The Best Ways to Keep Your Roofing Business Top of Mind with Millie Hindes14 Feb 202300:47:47

Millie Hindes was born and raised in a suburb of Columbus, OH. Millie was bartending when she met a storm chaser, moved to Portland OR, fell in love with the town, riding a truck, climbing a ladder and getting on roofs, and sweating her “tookus off”... Millie chased storms for a few years, in 9 different cities... then she had her last TERRIBLE boss (story of climbing 10:12) and opened her business about 10 years ago. And YES she is the founder - it is not her father's business, it is not her husband's business... She “OWNs THIS B****!!!” ;) Watergate Roofing: covers up what's inside. What makes them different is the company outlook and motto: Do it right. Do it well. The office is a happy, fun place to be - Nick, her “Beyonce” (we’ll expand on that) and she, has learned the importance of positive reinforcement with the staff. “EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES - it's how you fix them that counts.” Millie started taking the growth of the company more seriously after she had Louie, her 4-year-old. Now Watergate Roofing is in a growth phase, and she doesn’t have control of everything- which is SUPER difficult to deal with, she says. Millie states, “I don't know all my customers, we get leads off the interweb, they're not all referrals - stuff goes wrong that I don't know about - and I am expected to deal with this sh** like an adult!!” Amanda Fisher is the company's sales coach and management/strategy coach - she helps the company back up out of the day-to-day - so they can see the BIG picture - long-term growth, hiring, firing. Amanda helps Watergate Roofing make important decisions. On this episode, we talk about ways to keep your company at the top of consumers' minds.
