Remembering Mitchell Kezin & Jingle Bell Rocks!15 Dec 202401:11:07

As we enter into our first holiday season since the passing of Christmas Music aficionado Mitchell Kezin, we gather around the microphone at Chez Fashionista to share memories and reminisce about the beloved Vancouver filmmaker, his legacy and his lasting impact on the Christmas music community.

Through his 2013 documentary Jingle Bell Rocks!, in Kezin's words, "A trippy, cinematic sleighride thru the underground subculture of alternative Christmas music", Kezin himself has joined the pantheon of tortured Christmas underdogs along with George Bailey of It's A Wonderful Life, Rudolph, Hermey The Misfit Elf, Charlie Brown, Clark Griswold, Kevin McCallister, Buddy from Elf and a host of others.

In one of Kezin's final social media posts he expressed joy and gratitude that in the decade since its release, Jingle Bell Rocks! has become a Christmas tradition for many:

"THANK YULE ALL !   I wanted to take a moment to express my thanks & gratitude to each & every one of you ~ new friends and old ~ who took the time to reach out to me… I am so grateful for all the incredible support you have shown me once again for Jingle Bell Rocks! Doc and the joy it has brought you this Xmas season!   There is no more flattering and meaningful experience for a filmmaker then to hear directly from folks about how moved they are by your work and that they look forward to their annual Xmas viewings.   To realize that my Lil' Xmas Evergreen has become a part of your own family holiday ritual still blows my mind ! When I began work on the film many moons ago, I had high hopes for some measure of success, but I never dreamed that JBRX! would have the impact it seems to have had, now ten years on from its original release back in Fall 2014.   A very sweet fan recently noted that for her, JBRX! is the "feel good Christmas classic that helps get her thru the holiday"   Well, that is a compliment that fills me with more LUV than you can possibly imagine.   THANK YOU ALL so very much...I wish you peace & prosperity in the coming year...You are something else !!!" - Mitchell Kezin, January 7, 2024   In this Episode we are joined by Christmas Music enthusiast Amelia C. who corresponded with Kezin over the years and met him at the Toronto premier of Jingle Bell Rocks!   Amelia's Christmas Mixes can be found here: christmasmix.wordpress.com   Isle Of Lucy Christmas Mixes: https://www.mixcloud.com/isleoflucy/   Hip Christmas: https://hipchristmas.com/   Christmas Underground: https://christmasunderground.com/   Jingle Bell Rocks! Captain Beefheart vs The Monkees And Drummers Who Sing!01 Dec 202401:02:30

In this rambling episode we wrap the tumultuous yet ultimately triumphant saga of British electronic music pioneer Gary Numan while clarifying the distinction between said Numan and noted Academy Award wining music satirist and all around American song and dance man Mr. Randy Newman.

We dial into John Lennon's Lost Weekend co-conspirator and 70's American hit maker Harry Nilsson for his classic album in praise of said Newman while shedding light on that peculiar Rock N Roll phenomenon of Drummers Who Sing.

With a nod to Jellyfish, the GREATEST band (from the 90's) that should have made it BIG! BIG! BIG! (Big Star! Big Star! Big Star!) we riff on the hit song singing Power Pop brilliance of The Monkees' Micky Dolenz, musing aloud as to why Rolling Stone's Jann Wenner hates them so much, banning them from ever being inducted into HIS Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland.

In a wink and a nod, Dolenz tips the proverbial fedora to the songwriting prowess of former Monkees bandmate and country rock tunesmith Michael Nesmith (the one with the hat whose Mom invented whiteout) with the stellar 2021 album Dolenz Sings Nesmith.

We play the Six Degrees Of Seperation Game with noted roots Americana guitarist extraordinaire Ry Cooder for his brief and troubling stint with Captian Beefheart which ultimately led to a long and fruitful music partnership with the earlier mentioned I Love L.A./Short People/You've Got A Friend In Me/I Love To See You Smile/You Can Leave Your Hat On/I Want People To Like Me/Mr. Randy Newman.

Record shopping in Greenwich Village and the former CBGBs just to namecheck Trout Mask Replica in a little over an hour... PHEW!!

The Actual Gary Numan Episode24 Nov 202400:59:03

Apologies to all listener's who endured the entire previous episode for the intended Gary Numan theme that crash landed into the endless abyss of David Bowie. We are truly sorry.

Here is the actual episode on Gary Numan. With a segue into the late, great Melanie Safka (Brand New Key, Lay Down (Candles In The Rain), Look What They Did To My Song, Ma) who passed away earlier this year.

And finally a bit on preeminent British BBC radio DJ John Peel and his Record Box of 143 vinyl singles.

No gerbils were harmed in the making of this episode.

The One About Gary Numan That Became A Rant About Bowie17 Nov 202400:58:57

We intended to dedicate the entire hour of Episode 14 to celebrating British electronic music pioneer Gary Numan and the 40th Anniversary of his 1984 album Berserker.

However, in attempting to peel back the layers of the origin story behind Gary Numan's popularity we stumbled into a quagmire of Bowie, ultimately plunging head first into the quicksand of a hunky dory.

Apologies to the former Gary Webb. To be revisited on the Highway Of Episode 15 coming next week.

Stay tuned...

Brian Wilson Endless Summer 202522 Jun 202501:15:54

It's official! Summer 2025 has OFFICIALLY been declared Brian Wilson Endless Summer 2025 with festivities going all summer long!

#BrianWilsonEndlessSummer2025

Today, the first full day of Summer 2025, we joyfully dedicate the ENTIRE episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas to music Produced, Written, Recorded, Arranged and Performed by that Pop Music Master genius...

THE MAESTRO

THE MAN

THE LEGEND

Mr. Brian Wilson (1942-2025)

Join us as we surf the waves of Brian's madness from the mid 1960's through the turbulent 70's, laying "in a bed just like Brian Wilson did".

We make stops along the way to Terry Mercher's unfortunate L.A. mansion where we are greeted by nonother than a disgruntled Charles Manson, friend to Brian's baby brother and fellow Beach Boy Dennis Wilson.

Seems Charlie didn't dig the fact he didn't get that record deal he was promised, a deal thoroughly supported by one time fan and music colleague Neil Young!

All this and more in the latest installment of Rock N Roll Fashionistas, contextualizing rock n roll since Woodstock 2024

RIP New York Dolls03 Mar 202501:12:27

With the passing of David Johansen, the last living member of the New York Dolls, we dedicate an entire episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas to the memory of all five fabulous individuals who made up the legendary New York group.

Johnny Thunders Lead guitar

David Johansen Lead vocals

Sylvain Sylvain Rhythm guitar

Arthur Kane Bass

Jerry Nolan Drums

The New York Dolls, a pioneering glam rock band composed of five influential members, each with their own remarkable stories and achievements.

Johnny Thunders (1952-1991) Born John Anthony Genzale, Thunders was born on July 15, 1952, and died at 38 under mysterious circumstances on April 23, 1991. Known for his captivating guitar work and as a charismatic frontman, Thunders earned his fame as a member of the New York Dolls before going on to play with the Heartbreakers and pursuing a solo career. His untimely death took place in his hotel room at The Inn on St. Peter (formerly known as St. Peter Guest House) in New Orleans, Louisiana. The cause remains controversial; while some reports indicated an overdose of cocaine and methadone, others suggested that advanced leukemia could have contributed to his decline. A theory put forth by Dee Dee Ramone alleges that Thunders was murdered when robbed of the abundant supply of methadone he required when on the road. Despite numerous calls from his family for a formal investigation into his death, the New Orleans police department has not acted.

Jerry Nolan (1946-1992) was born on May 7, 1946, and passed away on January 14, 1992, just months after Thunders. Renowned as a powerful rock drummer for both the New York Dolls and the Heartbreakers, Nolan was a noted steadying figure in bandmate Johnny Thunders’s often chaotic life, being six years his senior. When working on new music, Nolan became gravely ill with bacterial meningitis and pneumonia. During treatment at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York, he suffered a stroke that left him in a coma, ultimately leading to his death. He was laid to rest at Mount Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing, New York, leaving behind a legacy of drumming that defined an era.

Arthur Kane (1949-2004) was born on February 3, 1949. He was the bass guitarist and a founding member of the New York Dolls. He played a crucial role in the band’s formation in 1971 but was forced out in 1975, shortly after Thunders and Nolan departed. In a poignant twist of fate, Kane reunited with his former bandmates in 2004 for a concert in London that was later featured in the documentary New York Doll. On July 13, 2004, just 22 days after Kane’s performance with the New York Dolls, he began to feel unwell. Thinking he may have caught the flu while in London, he checked himself into a Los Angeles hospital, complaining of fatigue. He was quickly diagnosed with leukemia and died within two hours. He was 55 years old. Former bandmate, David Johansen, described him as “nonjudgmental, bawdy and holy.”

Sylvain Sylvain (1951-2021) Born Sylvain Mizrahi on February 14, 1951, he was a pivotal member of the New York Dolls, contributing his guitar talents and flamboyant style. After living in Atlanta for several years, Sylvain moved to Nashville in 2015. On the 27th of April, 2019, Sylvain went public with his cancer diagnosis, setting up a GoFundMe page to help cover treatment costs. He died from cancer at his home on January 13, 2021, at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy of rock music that continues to inspire new generations.

And finally, David Johansen (1950-2025) Born on January 9, 1950, Johansen was the charismatic lead singer of the New York Dolls, later gaining fame as Buster Poindexter. His vibrant career spanned decades. In 2020, Johansen was diagnosed with stage four cancer and a brain tumor, effectively bringing an end to his music career. His health declined further after a fall in November 2024, when he broke his back in two places and required surgery. His step-daughter launched a fundraiser to help with his treatment on January 10, 2025. He died on February 28, 2025, at the age of 75, in Staten Island, leaving behind an indelible mark on the music world.

Ellen McIlwaine: Your School Bus Driver Jammed With Jimi Hendrix08 Jun 202501:22:24

Ellen McIlwaine, one of the greatest practitioners of slide guitar ever, soulful powerhouse vocalist extraordinaire, poet, composer, songstress, lyricist, recording artist, painter, visual artist, interpreter of song and more. She was all that and then some...

Join us in our celebration of the life and artistry of this giant amongst musicians, this icon, this goddess...

Ellen McIlwaine's life and times explored through the lens of the newly posted CBC Docs YouTube channel music documentary "Goddess Of Slide" from Soul Flicker Films, an Alfonso Maiorana production https://youtu.be/SCTety1hwdI?si=PC2ux8sTlD5_Occr

As far back as 1973 the impact of Ellen McIlwaine's presence has been deeply felt and loomed large in the personal life of Rock N Roll Fashionista's host Sean Passmore (AKA "unimportant").

Join Passmore as he outs himself as the guy who made the phone call that changed McIlwaine's life.

Passmore sets the record straight on one singular inaccurate fact in this otherwise thoroughly inspiring love letter to McIlwaine who passed away quite suddenly at the age of 75 in 2021, six weeks after receiving a diagnosis of terminal cancer.

McIlwaine's music weaves poignantly through Passmore's life through personal recollections and anecdotes of Swami Bill, Brother Tommy and others in the colorful cast of characters from the Rock N Roll Fashionistas universe.

Did a teenage Passmore put an impertinent and inappropriate move on the middle-aged McIlwaine while making an embarrassingly inebriated song request in a bar?

And did McIlwaine play the song?

Would this same song fatefully draw McIlwaine & Passmore together again over a decade later with surprising, life altering results?

FIND OUT NOW and SO MUCH MORE on the latest episode of Rock N Roll Fashionistas

THE SONGS:

Opening Track: "Can't Find My Way Home" is a song written by Steve Winwood that was first released by Blind Faith on their self titled 1969 debut album. They were an English rock supergroup consisting of Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Ric Grech. They followed the success of each of the member's former bands, including Clapton and Baker's former group Cream and Winwood's former group Traffic but split up after a few months, producing only one album and a three-month summer tour. McIlwaine's cover of the song appears of her debut solo album Honky Tonk Angel released by Polydor Records in 1972 https://music.apple.com/ca/album/cant-find-my-way-home/1444004698?i=1444005078

"Higher Ground" is a song written by Stevie Wonder that first appeared on his 1973 album Innervisions. The song reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart. Wonder wrote and recorded the song in a three-hour burst of creativity in May 1973. McIlwaine's stunning reinterpretation of the song appears on her 1975 3rd album The Real Ellen McIlwaine released by Montreal, Canada label Kot'Ai Records https://music.apple.com/ca/album/higher-ground/932879780?i=932882018

"Down So Low" was written by American R&B and country music singer/songwriter Tracy Nelson. Welcome back Rock N Roll Fashionistas! In this weeks episode we explore the intrinsic link between Rock N Roll music and Black History Month, how the very roots of Rock N Roll evolved out of the magic that emerged from the 1940's Chicago blues scene and the development of Rhythm & Blues music as an offshoot of the popular Swing jazz music of the era.

We reveal the very first Rock N Roll song ever!

We reveal the very first use of guitar distortion ever!

Join us on numerous stops around the dial visiting the legendary Sun Records in Memphis, Tennessee with none other than Sam Phillips and and his young protégé Elvis Presley.

We visit Polish immigrant World War II veterans the Chess brothers, Leonard and Phil, along with their cavalcade of stars including Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Chuck Berry and Etta James at the legendary Chess Records in Chicago.

"Say it loud, I'm Black and I'm proud!" - James Brown

Opening track: "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton, recorded on August 13, 1952 and released as a single 45 RPM by Peacock Records in late February1953. From the Big Mama Thornton album Hound Dog: The Peacock Recordings https://music.apple.com/ca/album/hound-dog-the-peacock-recordings/1444120044.

Both 19 years old at the time, songwriting duo Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote the song Hound Dog n August 12, 1952 after being asked by R&B bandleader Johnny Otis to drop in on a Big Mama Thornton rehearsal and watch her work. They wrote the song the same day and recorded it the next. Written specifically for Thornton, Hound Dog was intended to reflect the 22 year old Thornton's personality, brusque and badass. Her recording of the song went on to Top seven Billboard Charts at the time including going #1 in the Billboard Top 100 and #1 in Billboard's Top Selling R&B Singles chart. At the time it was released it spent over three months in the R&B charts.

Closing track: "Rocket 88" 1951 Chess Records single attributed to Jackie Brenston And His Delta Cats. Sax player Jackie Brenston sang lead vocals on this track written by Ike Turner and recorded by Ike Turner & His Kings Of Rhythm at Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, produced by Sam Phillips. Guitar distortion by Willie Kizart with tenor saxophone solos by 17 year old Raymond Hill. https://music.apple.com/ca/album/youre-drivin-me-insane/299062706 Please note that lead vocalist, sax player Jackie Brenston's name is spelled incorrectly on this Apple Music album listing as Jackie Brenson. Apologies to the Brenston family and those who cherish Mr. Brenston's timeless legacy.

CLOSING TRACK: Well, Did You Evah! https://music.apple.com/ca/album/well-did-you-evah/1629181291?i=1629181417  is a song written by Cole Porter for his 1939 musical DuBarry Was A Lady, where it was introduced by Betty Grable and Charles Walters. It is written as a duet, with the pair exchanging bad news, shrugging off and one upping each others stories all in the name of an aloof good time.

Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra sang the song in the movie High Society, January 17, 1956. The film is a musical remake of the 1940 screwball comedy film The Philadelphia Story staring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, itself based on Phillip Barry's 1939 play of the same name.

The Sinatra/Crosby duet is likely the most well known version of the song. It was added to the movie late in development, to give the two stars an opportunity to sing together.

Punk Rock royalty Debbie Harry and proto punk granddaddy Iggy Pop recorded the song in 1990 for Red Hot + Blue, a compilation album released as part of an urgent call to raise funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS.

Red Hot + Blue is the first compilation album from the Red Hot Organization in the Red Hot Benefit Series. It features contemporary pop performers reinterpreting the songs of legendary LGBT Great American Songbook composer Cole Porter. The title of the album originates from Cole Porter's 1936 Broadway musical Red, Hot and Blue staring Ethel Merman, Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope.

Released in September 1990, the album sold over a million copies worldwide, raising nearly $1m for the activist group ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power). Heralded as one of the first major AIDS benefits in the music business, this initiative came a full two years before the creation of The Elton John Foundation, itself inspired by the tragic death from AIDS of teenager Ryan White who had, before his passing, forged a strong and meaningful friendship with pop singer Elton John.

Released as a single in the UK on December 24, 1990 but not the US. The single reached No. 42 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 29 in the Irish chart.
