One Hit Wonders: 3 Songs From 196920 Jun 202400:19:03

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  I’m Jumpin’ John, and in this podcast episode I will transport you listeners back to the year 1969!  The 1969-1970 time period is often referred to as an important transitional period in music that witnessed Album-Oriented Rock formats overshadowing Top 40 singles on the airwaves.

Back in 1969 the music buying industry was becoming dominated by purchases of rock albums.  The focus of this podcast is not on those popular albums of 1969.  Rather, I will briefly discuss three singles that were released in 1969 and are now considered to be classic one hit wonders!  Those three songs were “In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)”  by Zager and Evans, "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies, and "Spirit in the Sky" by Norman Greenbaum.  These three singles each would play significant roles in American music and pop culture.

Dusty Springfield21 May 202400:21:52

Greetings, fellow time travelers, and welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will discuss the career of the woman who, I would argue, was perhaps the finest white soul singer of her era!  I'm referring to the great British singing icon, Dusty Springfield!  So sit back and have a listen as we flash back in time in this edition of Rock and Roll Flashback!
During her 1960's peak, with her trademark peroxide blonde beehive hairdo, heavy makeup and eyeliner, evening gowns, and flamboyant performances, Dusty Springfield was an icon of the Swinging Sixties.  From 1963 to 1989 Dusty ranked among the most successful British female performers on both sides of the Atlantic with 6 top 20 singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and 16 top 20 singles on the U.K. Singles Chart.  Several international polls have named Dusty Springfield among the best female rock artists of all time.

One Hit Wonders: Ketty Lester & Kathy Young11 May 202400:08:41

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  Throughout the '50's and '60's, there were numerous Rock and Roll bands, vocal groups and solo artists. Many went on to have successful music careers, but unfortunately for others, lasting popularity did not always materialize. Some groups managed to achieve brief recognition, sometimes with just one hit, only to vanish from the music scene. A few managed to achieve some success, but only regionally, never quite gaining significant national attention. Those artists have come to be known as One Hit Wonders. During the 1950's and 1960's several artists attained that label.
I'm Bill Price and in this edition of One Hit Wonders, I will focus on two solo artists of the early 1960's, Ketty Lester and Kathy Young.

The Early Beatles: The Road to Beatlemania29 Mar 202400:19:35

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  I'm Bill Price, and in this edition of Rock and Roll Flashback, I will focus the early history of one of the most influential bands of the 1960's.  After performing and developing their unique sound in Hamburg, Germany, the Beatles returned to Liverpool, England in December 1962 after 12 performances at the Star Club in Hamburg.  Even though they had built up a following in Hamburg and Liverpool, they were still an unknown band elsewhere in England.  However, there were several hurdles to overcome before the music phenomenon that came to be known as Beatlemania hurdled the Beatles onto worldwide fame.  In this edition of The Early Beatles, I will focus on the period from 1961 to 1963, which was of great importance
in the band’s history.

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and today I will focus on one of the more successful British Invasion bands that began to hit America's musical shores in 1964.  This podcast is called Herman’s Hermits, Part 1, where I will briefly review the history and successful recordings behind the band called Herman's Hermits!  Be sure check out our companion podcast, Herman's Hermits, Part 2, where I interview an authentic Herman's Hermits fan in studio.

In 1964 Herman's Hermits was formed in Manchester, England.  Harvey Lisberg discovered them and signed on as their manager.  Then the band’s deal with producer Mickie Most had them signing with EMI's Columbia label in Europe and MGM Records in the United States.  Their five piece lineup essentially came together from two different local bands.  Keith Hopwood (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Karl Green (bass), and Peter Noone (lead vocals) came from the Heartbeats, and Derek "Lek" Leckenby (lead guitar) and Barry Whitwam (drums) joined later from the Wailers.

Buddy Holly23 Feb 202400:16:30

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback Podcasts!  I'm Bill Price, and in this podcast I will discuss one of the truly great pioneers of Rock and Roll.  Buddy Holly was very instrumental in Rock and Roll's early history.  This is the story of Buddy Holly and the Crickets on Rock and Roll Flashback.

Charles Hardin Holley was born in Lubbock, Texas during the Great Depression on
September 7, 1936. Beginning in his early childhood, he acquired the nickname “Buddy”.
Since his family was musically inclined, he took piano lessons at the age of eleven, but
gave it up after nine months, switching instead to the guitar. Initially Buddy’s parents
purchased a steel guitar, however what he really wanted was a guitar. His interest in
guitars started when he heard a school classmate singing and playing a guitar on the
school bus. Buddy received his first guitar that his parents purchased at a pawnshop.
His brother Travis then taught him how to play.

George Martin - The Fifth Beatle21 Feb 202400:28:05

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will review the career of the Fifth Beatle!  No, I am not referring to Beatles friend and New York City disc jockey, Murray "the K" Kaufman.  Nor am not referring to Stuart Sutcliffe, who briefly played bass for the band.  Nor am I referring to Pete Best, who played drums for three years with the band.  This podcast is instead about the innovative and prolific music producer, Sir George Henry Martin. The Fifth Beatle!
George Martin's career spanned more than six decades in music, film, television and live performance.  During his career, Martin won six Grammy Awards.   He produced 30 #1 singles and 16 #1 albums in the UK.  His productions resulted in 23 #1 singles and 19 #1 albums in the US.  His work with the Beatles truly created the soundtrack for the 1960's and the blueprint for the rest of the rock and roll world.   Records and songs that Martin supervised and produced have sold over a billion copies and are still selling!

One Hit Wonders: Troy Shondell & The Cascades21 Feb 202400:10:07

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  I'm Bill Price, and throughout the '50's and '60's, there were numerous Rock and Roll bands, vocal groups, and solo artists. During the 1950's and 1960's several bands attained that label. In this edition of One Hit Wonders, I will focus on the careers of solo artist Troy Shondell and The Cascades!

Bill Haley07 Feb 202400:14:24

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback podcasts!
Bill Haley and his group the Comets are generally credited with first popularizing Rock and Roll in the early 1950's.  As a result of their success, they sold over sixty million records worldwide.  During the period from late 1954 to the end of 1956, the band recorded nine Top 20 singles, one of which reached number one and three that were Top Ten hits.  "Rock Around the Clock" became the best-selling rock single in the history of the genre and retained that position for many years.  I'm Bill Price, and this is their story on Rock and Roll Flashback.

During the 1950's and 1960's several attained that label. In 1958 an unknown group from Southern California, achieved a number one hit with “To Know Him Is to Love Him”. In 1960 another southern California band had a number five hit with “Angel Baby”. In this edition of one hit wonders I’ll feature the story of two groups, The Teddy Bears and Rosie and The Originals.

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  I'm Bill Price, and this episode of the Rock and Roll Flashback Podcast will feature the career of singer/songwriter Otis Redding!

Otis Ray Redding Jr. was born on September 9, 1941 in Dawson, Georgia.  When Otis
was two years old, his family moved to Macon, Georgia.  At an early age, he sang in the
Vineville Baptist Church choir and learned to play the guitar and piano.  By the age of ten, Otis took drum and singing lessons.  At the Ballard-Hudson High School, he sang in the school band.  When he was fifteen, he quit school in order to help support his family by working as a well digger, gasoline station attendant, and frequently as a musician.  On Sundays he earned $6 by performing gospel songs for Macon radio station WIBB.

Jimmy Webb, Part 2 (MacArthur Park)22 Jan 202400:10:42

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback!  I'm Bill Price, and in this edition of Rock and Roll Flashback Podcasts, I’ll again be spotlighting songwriter, composer and singer Jimmy Webb.  Jimmy’s career in the music industry is impressive, having accumulated a string of pop classics and recorded by several well-known artists.  In Jimmy Webb, Part 2, I’ll focus on the story behind the hit song “MacArthur Park”.

Although, Jimmy Webb is well known for having written many hit songs, “MacArthur

Sister Rosetta Tharpe21 Dec 202300:19:54

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback Podcasts.  Today's episode reviews the career of Sister Rosetta Tharpe!

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a woman who broke every norm.  She was a thrice-married, bi-sexual woman who, for several years, toured with her gay partner.  She was a fearless and confident black artist who popularized gospel music by combining traditional gospel music with the sounds of jazz and swing.  Rosetta is often referred to as "the original soul sister" and "the Godmother of rock and roll".  The list of famous musicians who have cited Rosetta Tharpe as a major influence is extensive.  Her unforgettable voice, gospel swing crossover style, and guitar playing influenced a generation of musicians including such greats as Little Richard, Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Isaac Hayes, Tina Turner, and countless others.  In 2007, she was inducted posthumously into the Blues Hall of Fame, and on December 13, 2017, she was elected posthumously to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence.

Johnny Rivers02 Dec 202300:33:25

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and in today's podcast I will discuss the career of John Ramistella, better known as Johnny Rivers!

John Henry Ramistella was born on November 7, 1942 in New York City.  In 1948 his family moved from New York to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  John was drawn to the guitar before rock and roll became a national sensation.  His first musical inspiration was his father, who played guitar and mandolin and had perfect pitch.  Rhythm and blues was a way of life in Baton Rouge, and John listened to R&B on the late-night radio stations.  He saw performers like Fats Domino and Jimmy Reed in person.  In 1954 Elvis Presley performed at Baton Rouge High School, and John was hooked!  John has said [and I quote], “I was thinking, this guy is really cool because he had the greasy hair and sideburns.  It was something I'll never forget.  I said, wow, that's what I want to do.” [end quote].

Johnny Rivers is a unique figure in the history of rock music.  He was an American rock star of the 1960s, who came to popularity just as the Beatles and other English bands began their invasion of America.   Johnny was unique as a white American singer and guitarist who made a name for himself as a straight-ahead rock & roller during the middle of that decade.  Just as important behind the scenes, his recordings and their success led to the launching, directly and indirectly, of at least three record labels and a dozen other careers whose influence extended into the 1970s, 1980s, and beyond.  With a repertoire including pop, folk, blues, and old-time rock ‘n’ roll, Johnny Rivers remains best known for seventeen Top 40 Billboard hits, nine singles in the Top 10, two Grammy awards, and over 30 million records sold!

Alan Freed08 Nov 202300:25:56

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John McDermott, and in today's podcast I will discuss the major influence of disk jockey Alan Freed on the early development of rock and roll!

Alan Freed has secured a place in American music history as the first important rock 'n' roll disc jockey.  Not only was he the first radio disc jockey and concert producer who frequently played and promoted rock and roll, but he popularized the phrase "rock and roll" on mainstream radio.  His on-air manner was energetic, in contrast to other radio DJ's, who were more subdued and low-key while playing traditional pop music.  Freed helped to break down racial barriers in popular music.  He promoted the emerging black musical styles of the 1950s to a white mainstream audience.  He helped bridge the gap of segregation among young teenage Americans, presenting music by black artists (rather than cover versions by white artists) on his radio program.  He also arranged live concerts attended by racially mixed audiences.   Freed's importance to the rock 'n' roll musical genre led to his inclusion with the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.  He was the only non-musician inducted into that first class.

Aretha Franklin24 Oct 202300:31:53

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and we'll be looking back at some of Rock and Roll's greatest artists, songs, and stories.  Today's podcast will discuss the life and illustrious career of the woman known as "The Queen of Soul":  Aretha Franklin!

Aretha Louise Franklin was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee.  Her father, C. L. Franklin, was a Baptist minister and circuit preacher.  Her mother, Barbara, was an accomplished piano player and vocalist.  When Aretha was two, the family relocated to Buffalo, New York.  By the time Aretha turned five, C. L. Franklin had permanently relocated the family to Detroit, Michigan, where he was pastor of the New Bethel Baptist Church.  Shortly afterward her parents separated, and her mother returned to Buffalo.  Aretha's mother would die of a heart attack in 1952, before Aretha's 10th birthday.   During this time, Aretha learned how to play piano by ear.  She attended public school in Detroit through her first year at Northern High School, but dropped out during her second year.  Aretha would end up being the mother of four sons, and she gave birth to her first child while only 12 years old.

Aretha's father initially managed her early career, taking her on the road with him during his gospel caravan tours.  He helped her sign her first recording deal with J.V.B. Records.  In 1956, J.V.B. released fourteen-year-old Aretha's first single, "Never Grow Old", backed with "You Grow Closer".   During this time, Franklin would occasionally travel with the Soul Stirrers.  As a young gospel singer, Franklin spent summers on the gospel circuit in Chicago and stayed with Mavis Staples' family.  At the age of 16, Aretha went on tour with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  Other influences in her youth included Mahalia Jackson, Marvin Gaye (who was a boyfriend of her sister), Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke.  Another important influence was James Cleveland

The Doors, Part 201 Oct 202300:26:53

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and today's podcast will cover the final years, starting in 1969, of the career of one of the great American rock bands:  the Doors!  Among other things I will review the little known role of the Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian in a Doors' recording - and the origin of Mr. Mojo Risin!  So break on through and take a few minutes to listen to The Doors, Part 2!

As I mentioned in the companion podcast, The Doors, Part 1, the single "Touch Me" was released in December 1968.  It reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 in the Cashbox Top 100 in early 1969.  It would end up being the Doors' third and last American #1 single.

On March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, Florida, the Doors gave the most controversial performance of their career.  The 7,000 capacity auditorium had no air conditioning on that warm night.  The seats had been removed by the promoter to boost ticket sales, resulting in a restless, overflow crowd of 10,600.  Morrison arrived drunk, and the concert started an hour late.  Morrison had recently attended a play by an experimental theater group and was inspired by their "antagonistic" style of performance art.  So, from the very first song, Morrison taunted the crowd.  Things unraveled quickly on stage.  Morrison started and stopped in mid song.  He peppered the crowd with questions, obscene requests, and four-letter words.  The audience grew angry, hurling insults.  Morrison took his shirt off, and some in the audience started taking their clothes off.  Morrison held his shirt in front of his groin area and supposedly made hand movements behind it.  Four days later the Dade County Sheriff's office issued a warrant for Morrison's arrest, claiming Morrison had exposed his penis while on stage and shouted obscenities to the crowd.    Morrison was offered a plea bargain that required the Doors to perform a free Miami concert, but he turned it down.  So he was convicted and sentenced to six months in jail with hard labor, and ordered to pay a $500 fine.  Morrison remained free, pending an appeal of his conviction, but he would tragically die before the matter was legally resolved.  Interestingly, his three band mates all denied the allegation that Morrison exposed himself on stage that night.

Songs That Were Covers: I Can Hear Music26 Jul 202400:18:17

Welcome to Songs That Were Covers on Rock and Roll Flashback!  I'm Bill Price, and this series will feature the songs that were covers of the original version.  In many instances the original recording did not always become a hit.  In some cases it would take at least one or more cover versions in order for the song to become a top hit.  However, sometimes the subsequent covers also failed to achieve hit status. In this episode I will feature the four versions of “I Can Hear Music”.

The Doors, Part 101 Oct 202300:20:41

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and today's podcast will cover the first three years in the career of one of the great American rock bands:  the Doors!  So light your fire and have a listen to The Doors, Part 1!

In 1965 Ray Manzarek was playing keyboards in a Los Angeles band called Rick & the Ravens with his brothers Rick and Jim Manzarek.  Ray Manzarek happened to meet Jim Morrison on Venice Beach in July 1965.  They recognized each other from both attending the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.  When Morrison told Manzarek he had been writing songs and sang him the opening words of "Moonlight Drive", Manzarek was impressed.  Ray invited Jim Morrison to join the band.

At that same time John Densmore was drumming with the Psychedelic Rangers.  Densmore knew Manzarek from meditation classes and joined the group in August 1965.  By now the band called themselves the Doors, taking their name from the title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception.  In September 1965, after Manzarek's two brothers left, guitarist Robby Krieger joined.  The Doors lineup was now complete:  with vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore.

Eddie Cochran09 Sep 202300:16:57

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  Hey, Jumpin' John here, and on this podcast I will discuss the brief career of early rock and roller and rockabilly sensation, Eddie Cochran!

Ray Edward Cochran was born in 1938 in Albert Lea, Minnesota.  When Eddie was in junior high school his family moved to Bell Gardens, California.  Cochran briefly took music lessons in school, and the school band director suggested that Eddie try the clarinet.  Cochran refused to even consider it.  He vowed to quit the band if he couldn't play what he wanted.  After quitting to play drums, he gravitated to learning guitar on his brother's Kay brand guitar (that's spelled K-A-Y).  Eddie bought a guitar chord book and was completely self-taught, playing country, blues, and other music he heard on the radio.

Chuck Berry04 Sep 202300:18:27

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and today's podcast will review the career of one of the pioneers of rock and roll music:  Chuck Berry!

Charles Edward Anderson Berry was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1926.  Despite a lifetime filled with legal problems and periodic jail time, he became one of the most influential, groundbreaking musicians of early rock and roll.  Called by some "The Father of Rock and Roll", in 1986 Chuck Berry would be among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Kinks25 Aug 202300:19:42

Welcome to Rock & Roll Flashback!  I'm Jumpin' John, and on this podcast I will discuss the English rock band called the Kinks!

Ray Davies and his younger brother Dave Davies were born in the mid 1940’s in London, England.  After both learning to play guitar, the brothers formed the Ray Davies Quartet at school with Ray's friend and classmate Pete Quaife and Quaife's friend John Start.  The band performed under several other names between 1962 and 1963—the Peter Quaife Band, the Bo-Weevils, the Ramrods, and the Ravens.

In 1963 record producer Shel Talmy began working with the band, and in early 1964 Talmy got them a contract with Pye (P-Y-E) Records.  The Ravens added a new drummer, Mick Avory, and in early 1964 the Ravens changed their name to the Kinks.  Ray Davies has said that the name was coined by Larry Page, and referenced their "kinky" fashion sense.  Larry Page said, "The way you look, and the clothes you wear, you ought to be called the Kinks."  The original Kinks line-up was Ray Davies (on lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Dave Davies (on lead guitar, vocals), Mick Avory (on drums, percussion) and Pete Quaife (on bass).
