99: Jessica Simpson - "A Public Affair"

Episode 99

mercredi 31 juillet 2024Duration 01:23:26

Grab those cowboy boots and pull on those sexy denim shorts because we are steppin' out for A Public Affair! Joel and David are heading back to 2005 and 2006 to revisit this iconic chapter in Jessica Simpson's career - and arguably, her best album to date!

As the sun was setting on her high-profile marriage to Nick Lachey and the "Newlyweds" series; Our Jessica Ann is hitting a new stride! She bagged her first film role, playing the iconic Daisy Duke in "The Dukes of Hazzard" and released one of her highest-charting singles 'These Boots Were Made For Walking'. Little did we know then that the character would become the launch pad for so many commercial opportunities for savvy Jess, including her billion-dollar retail empire!

"A Public Affair" was released the following year, with the title track grabbing headlines for all the best reasons. The music video and euphoric pop tune saw Jess step out for the ultimate girls night out with Christina Applegate, Christina Milian and Eva Longoria.

Whether she was being real and vulnerable on 'I Belong To Me' or giving you an undeniable "slagbanger" in 'Fired Up', there's plenty to enjoy on this fun and varied album; which samples everything from Dead or Alive to Diana Ross and Fleetwood Mac! We're here for the full spectrum of it.

98: Pixie Lott on 15 Years of "Turn It Up" and returning to her roots with new album "Encino"

Episode 98

jeudi 27 juin 2024Duration 01:24:08

This is one of the most special conversations we've ever had on the podcast. Joel and David are joined by chart-topping, BRIT-nominated pop singer songwriter Pixie Lott to celebrate 15 years since the release of her No.1-selling debut single, 'Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)' and the massive debut album "Turn It Up", which sold over a million copies and spawned six Top 20 singles!

But we're going even further back to Joel and Pixie's shared secondary school memories. From train journeys listening to Pixie's early demos with cheeky McDonald's, to her skipping class to sing for music mogul LA Reid and signing her first major label deal; we go back to her teens and talk about her early music influences.

We look back on the whirlwind years of countless studio sessions with some of pop's biggest hitmakers, music video shoots, a Pixie Lott-branded plane, opening for The Saturdays and Rihanna before embarking on her own headline tour "The Crazycats Tour".

She also chats about her collaborations with Selena Gomez and Stevie Wonder, and a lost Joe Jonas duet; and how she finally created the album she has always wanted to make, "Encino".

Don't miss Pixie Lott Live at London's Hoxton Hall on 11 July - tickets now on sale. Her new single 'Somebody's Daughter' is out now, go pre-order her forthcoming album "Encino" - out on 27 September.

89: Sophie Ellis-Bextor - "Make A Scene" with 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' and more

Episode 89

mercredi 17 janvier 2024Duration 01:10:42

"Face to face, it's Murder on The Dancefloor. Cut to the chase, just give us what we came for!" Pop fans, we hear you loud and clear. It's a new year and the dawn of the Sophiessance Age! Joel and David are jumping in that time machine with the dials set for 2009 to 2011 for Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Make A Scene" era - her clubbiest body of work yet!

This all-killer-no-filler fourth album marked the closing of Sophie's club disco chapter in the 2000s but she's not leaving the dancefloor without a bang! 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' with Freemasons, 'Can't Fight This Feeling' with Junior Caldera, and 'Not Giving Up On Love' with Armin Van Buuren - these titan dance collaborations that are still beating strong in her discography were born from this time.

Whether you're new to Sophie's work or a card-holding member of the 'Murder' cult; we all need to be bumping these tracks and getting them back up the charts. We got classy, Sophisticated offerings like 'Starlight' and 'Bittersweet' ("It's like a £20 bottle of wine!") to grittier indie club-friendly cuts like 'Under Your Touch', and retro Calvin Harris with 'Off & On'... it's time to get on the revolution!

86: "Reach for the Stars" with Special Guest & Author Michael Cragg | RBAY! Book Club

Episode 86

jeudi 7 décembre 2023Duration 52:58

Welcome to our first ever Right Back At Ya! Book Club episode. It's a new thing we're doing to cross into the world of literature, just like so many of our popstars-turned-authors. For our very first attempt at this spin-off series; we're speaking with respected pop music journalist and author Michael Cragg, who released his first book - the very 'right up our street' - "Reach for the Stars - 1996-2006: Fame, Fallout and Pop's Final Party", which is now available in paperback. Hello, Christmas stocking filler!

This 'pop bible', as hailed by Joel, is a super fun look at the golden years of pop from Spice Girls through to the dawn of the reality show eras of Pop Idol, Popstars and The X Factor. Michael has literally spoken to so many legends in this book, including members of Spice Girls, 5ive, Steps, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Blue, as well as hitmakers like Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper of Xenomania, Richard X, MNEK, and industry legends like Peter Lorraine, Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and... our very own Joel and David.

Michael chats with our RBAY boys about his process in putting together this incredible pop oral history, and spotlights three songs by three artists he spoke with for the book. If you have any suggestions for a future Book Club episode; email, comment or DM us right away. The library is open!

85: Lost Girl Bands Vol. 1 - Mini Viva, Dolly Rockers and Girls Can't Catch

Episode 85

vendredi 24 novembre 2023Duration 01:11:25

This podcast truly loves a pop girl group - and it shows! For years we have talked about doing a special episode celebrating the 'lost' girl bands of the 2000s and now here we are. It felt absolutely right to kick things off with the three distinct British girl groups that were launched in 2009: Mini Viva, Dolly Rockers and Girls Can't Catch. While these groups sadly disbanded not long after their launch, they will always live on in our hearts.

Together, Joel and David present you the girlies, getting into their singles and album sampler highlights, and more! Bring on the nostalgia!

Mini Viva, the Xenomania pop duo of Britt and Frankee, released three singles 'Left My Heart in Tokyo', 'I Wish' and 'One Touch'. Dolly Rockers, who started their fledgling journey on The X Factor but returned stronger in a few years with the buzz-worthy track 'Je Suis Une Dolly' which led to a deal with Parlophone, culminating in their official debut single 'Gold Digger'. Fascination Records' Girls Can't Catch was positioned as the 'little sister' of label mate girl groups Girls Aloud and The Saturdays, but they ultimately left us wanting more after the release of their singles 'Keep Your Head Up' and 'Echo'.

If you are loving what we're doing, let us know in the comments. Who would you like to see in a 'Lost Girl Bands Vol.2'?

84: Madonna - "Music"

Episode 84

mercredi 8 novembre 2023Duration 01:20:19

Do you like to Boogie Woogie? Because your Right Back At Ya! boys are covering the Queen of Pop for the first time, so grab that pink cowboy hat and tiara - and let's get to it! With The Celebration Tour going full throttle now (and yes we will give our thoughts on it!), it feels like the perfect moment to dive into Madonna's 2000 album "Music". Joel and David dive into this monumental album, including the singles and music videos, and relive Madonna's Brixton Academy gig which was impressively instantly live streamed to a global audience on the world wide web! *insert dial-up modem tone*

The "Music" era was a massive turning point for her Madgesty both creatively and personally. It's a new millennium, new experimental body of work with a new collaborator (Mirwais) and, it also marks Madonna's first album made exclusively in Europe. The avant-garde French house and electronica influences mixed with warm acoustic guitars, acid techno and folk influences brought us big commercial hits like 'Music', 'Don't Tell Me' and 'What It Feels Like For A Girl'; but also wild dance tracks like 'Impressive Instant' and 'Runaway Lover'. Despite the European influences, visually she gave us one of her most memorable signature looks with the camp, country Western aesthetic. There is so much to unpack together!

If you're liking us doing Madonna, let us know in the comments.
