MTB Trail Closures — Riding the Fine Line Between Sanctioned and Illicit Trails [RNL S2, Ep 5]11 Jun 202501:03:37

Ever ridden an “illegal” mountain bike trail? Has one of your favorite trails or features been recently shut down?  How do we deal with closures and rogue trail building?  This week, we dive into the wild world of mountain biking’s gray areas — from rogue builds and red tape to trail shutdowns and the passionate advocates fighting to keep the stoke alive. Whether it’s sketchy lines or battles over building rights, we’re covering all things MTB, on and off the map.

Plus, the boys explore more MTB topics on this episode — from brainstorming Strava titles mid-ride to chasing flow and letting go of expectations. Dan and Sage get real about self-worth, fear, music, body position, and finding freedom on two wheels. It’s all about trusting your skills, riding with intention, and maybe… building a new bike park for every trail that gets shut down!

MTB Gratitude of the Week:

Dan: Shoutout to listener Jason - Jason took inspiration from the R&L podcast and crushed a gnarly tech climb he once thought was impossible. The skills were there all along — he just had to believe it. We got this. You’re stronger than you think, and Jason’s proving it out on the trails!

Sage: Big thanks to Keeton and Jose - two super skilled riders who shared tips and trail wisdom with Sage at Blue Mountain Bike Park. Riding behind talented folks takes the guesswork out of the game. Just trust the speed, trust your skills… you’ve got this!

MTB Tip of the Week:

When the trail’s muddy, ride through it, not around it. Getting your bike (and legs) dirty is way better than widening the trail by going off-path. Trust us, land managers and trail builders will thank you!

Mountain Bike Pads on Trial! A Case For And Against MTB Protection [RNL Quick Rip]02 Apr 202500:17:28

Mountain bike knee pads, elbow pads and full face (enduro) helmets add protection but maybe they don't help all riders!?  Is Sage right to refuse MTB pads on trails and bike parks!?  Let the trial begin!

Flow on the trails starts with confidence and comfort.  If we believe that pads protect us and add confidence, then they are already working!  But the same is true for the opposite belief system!  Debate the pros and cons of wearing MTB pads on trails and bike parks.  What pads do you wear?  Why do you wear/not wear pads? What do you think of chest/back/neck protectors?  Do you prefer a full-face enduro helmet?  Join the conversation!

Learn a valuable MTB breathing and visualization routine to apply to your next mountain bike ride featuring intimidating jumps, drops rocks and gnarly trails.  Choose your riding partners carefully as group vibes matters when you're looking to take your mountain bike riding to the next level.

How much time do you need to get ready at the trailhead (Dan needs too much!?)  What makes mountain bike jumps different from traditional dirt jumps?  Dan and Sage discuss how to find your peaceful presence and use living in the moment to add confidence and stoke to all your mountain bike rides.  Boosting jumps adds control and steez in the air.  The human body is amazing as we discuss multi-day stage races, bulldog mentality, mega climbs, clipless pedals on dirt jumpers, flat pedals and more!

Ride Dynamic, Fist Bump vs. Handshakes, Pump Track Skills, Hip Hinge & More! [RNL S1, Ep 57]12 Mar 202501:01:56

When you're open, present, and centered on the mountain bike, all your skills will flow effortlessly.  Use your excitement to be active and dynamic on the bike as you confidently ride all the jumps, drops, tech, steeps, skinnies and climbs.

Settle the debate... mountain bike fist bump vs. hand shake (or bro-hug!)?   Are some features visually misleading or actually harder to ride?  Dan 'focuses on not focusing' in order to enter the mountain bike flow state!  Sage rides awesome trails in Virginia such as Ragged Mountain, Western Slope and O Hill.  Callouses are normal for mountain bike hands (though storing them in a jar is still not normal!).

Dan commits to trying RevGrips on his DJ!  Don't burn out your quads on the MTB downhill with a proper 'hip-hinge.'  Can smaller jumps actually be harder than bigger jumps?  Overcoming crash memories on Sunset Ridge Trail at Hawes.  Trying Continental Kryptotal tires and discussing loose terrain riding technique.  Join us for all the high vibes, encouragement, laughs and fun!  We appreciate you!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Dan: DJI Osmo Action Mini Extension Rod - Dan is grateful for this pocket-sized extendable tripod made specifically for the DJI Action Camera.  With this nifty tripod in his pocket, Dan is able to record extra B-roll for the podcast. MTB Gratitude of the Week:

Dan: Lyte Show Travel Packets! - In case of dehydration... do a shot of pure electrolyte liquid!  The perfect combination of salt and minerals. Dan appreciates being able to drink this electrolyte shot directly. Especially in the heat of the Arizona desert! These Lyte Show packets are great for travel but even better for hot weather mountain biking!  LyteShow Packets - https://amzn.to/3DsfcTt (Affiliate Link)

Sage: Reading Glasses! - Sage appreciates his reading glasses!  With the 'readers,' Sage can now read and write in his gratitude journal.  Manifesting MTB Progression, joy & stoke!  If you're having trouble with anything... it's OK to accept help! Surrender to the moment and see that the answers may be closer than you realize!

MTB Tip of the Week:

Sunglass travel wipes! - As the weather thaws, Sage has noticed mud splattering onto his riding glasses.  These inexpensive sunglass wipes are a great way to clean your glasses, sunglasses or mountain biking goggles of mud.  They work equally well in the summer for sweat and debris!  Some wipes even have an anti-fog element to them for added utility! The Hardest MTB Feature, Intuition, RevGrips, DJ vs Gravel Bikes, and More! [RNL S1, Ep 55]26 Feb 202500:59:26

Certain MTB features are visually unsettling and can get stuck in our heads!  The dreaded "downward facing drop" may require more technique on our mountain bike trails than we're accustomed to!  Access your MTB intuition, trust your skills, stay present and effortlessly flow through any and all features on your next mountain bike ride!

Do calloused hands mean we're gripping the handlebars too hard?  Does an electric Dirt Jumper actually make a lot of sense?  When can gravel biking be considered mountain biking?  What the heck is cyclocross?  Join the guys for a fun conversation about hitting features for the 1st time, Dan's ride at Gold Canyon, e-bikes, perfect trails and more!

MTB Gratitude of the Week:

Dan: Email from Listener Nick Haas! - Dan & Sage received an awesome email from Nick about the positive vibes of the R&L podcast.  Nick noted how the pod is helping his mindset for more fun, flow & stoke on the bike.  Where we decide to put our attention and what we consume matters. Thank you Nick for your kind words and encouragement!  We appreciate you and all of our awesome listeners!

Sage: Sticker Mule! - New Ride & Laugh Stickers are here!  Sticker Mule does a great job with their stickers.  Next time you see us, don't be shy & ask for a shiny new Ride & Laugh sticker! Sticker Mule - https://www.stickermule.com/

MTB Tip of the Week:

How to warm up your winter gloves pre-ride! You're driving to the trails for a cold, winter ride but you don't have to warm your riding gloves on the dashboard defroster anymore.  Turn on your seat heaters and sit on those gloves!  Now your winter riding gloves are nice and toasty when you arrive at the trailhead!

From the pros racing Red Bull Hardline Tasmania to brand new riders, all mountain bikers possess the three prime MTB talents of balance, coordination and comfort on a bike.  What makes some people fall in love with mountain biking but scares others away from ever taking a bike on a trail again?

Join the fellas for a fun debate on how soon new riders know if they love or hate mountain biking?  Are all mountain bikers fans of progression?  Does mountain bike social media inspire or scare new riders?  How important is proper mountain bike coaching/instruction for new riders?  The guys also discuss MTBer time travelers from the past, comfort vs. progression, enduro bikes on Hardline courses, talent vs. experience, red light healing and much more!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Dan: Red Light Therapy! - After Dan injured a quad muscle, he has gratitude for the healing power of red light therapy!  Certain frequencies of red light have been scientifically proven to increase blood flow and stimulate cell regeneration.  Dan has utilized red light therapy to accelerate the healing of many injuries.  Thank you red light therapy! Red Light Therapy Wraps: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DFTY5CHR

Sage: Jeff Jackson! - Sage asked Jeff for some video of night riding and Jeff came through in a huge way with awesome footage of night riding at South Mountain.  And this wasn't footage that Jeff already had... The guy went out of his way to get awesome and fresh footage of mountain biking at night for the Ride & Laugh Podcast!  Jeff consistently has insightful and helpful comments on the R&L YouTube and he often promotes the show on Instagram.  Jeff Jackson is a fixture in the Arizona mountain bike scene and he made sure to introduce Dan to many of his awesome MTB buddies in AZ!  Thank you Jeff Jackson!!  We appreciate you!  https://www.youtube.com/@jeffjacksonmtb

MTB Tip of the Week:

Demo a MTB!  A great way to try mountain biking for the 1st time is to demo a bike!  Bike shops and bike companies offer opportunities to demo a bike.  When you go to a mountain bike "Demo Day" you'll have the opportunity to ride recommended bikes and talk directly to the bike mechanics.  Whether you're trying mtbing for the 1st time or deciding on your next mountain bike, "Demo Day" is a great idea!  Call your local bike shops or look online for mtb demos near you!

Your Best NEXT Mountain Bike May Surprise You! E-bike vs. DJ for Progression! [RNL S1, Ep 53]12 Feb 202501:04:06

We can all agree that hardtail mountain bikes and full suspension bikes are great choices, but what is the best NEXT bike for most riders to excel on?  E-bikes (aka E-MTBs) allow almost limitless laps and miles on your trails, but e-bikes are expensive while Dirt Jumpers (aka DJs) are inexpensive and demand precision from riders.  Listen to the episode & then let us know which you would choose: e-bike, DJ, or something else!

The fellas debate the best bike to own AFTER your hardtail and full suspension trail bike.  Dan & Sage make some surprisingly compelling arguments for e-bikes vs. dirt jumpers.  Who do you agree with?  Which bike would  you recommend and which bike would you buy?   The guys also discuss riding 'blind' vs. sessioning drops/features, icy Pennsylvania mountain bike trails, night riding, bike jump 'mastery', Dan in Arizona, riding centered/riding confident, and Sage's New Bike Day!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: 500 Subscribers on YouTube for Ride & Laugh! - The fellas have so much gratitude and appreciation for all our listeners and viewers on YouTube.  Sage especially puts a tremendous amount of work into the YouTube episodes.  We're unlimited and we're so excited to see what's next for Ride & Laugh and for all of our awesome listeners and viewers!

Dan: The State of Arizona - Dan is grateful to Arizona for the sun, positive vibes and healing energy.  Dan shares that his amazing wife, Lauren, has been fighting cancer and explains how he followed his intuition to move to Arizona for her healing.  Open to intuition, open to flow.  There is appreciation to be found in everything.  Be in the moment.  We got this.

MTB Tip of the Week:

When riding at night, use TWO lights.  The handlebar light will be your main headlight but a 2nd light on your helmet is key.  The helmet light will swivel with your head and also bail you out should the 1st light fail!  Night riding is fun and modern trail lights are amazing!

Get a professional bike fit!  We spend a lot of money on our bikes and gear.  Let’s make certain we’re fit for optimum performance on all of our current and future bikes!  Avoid injuries, add comfort, and maybe get faster at the same time!  A good bike fit can be invaluable.

Riding Blind! 8.5 Tips to Increase Your Confidence When Riding Trails for the 1st Time! [RNL S1, Ep 51]29 Jan 202501:01:49

Maximize the fun and excitement of mountain biking on a new trail for the 1st time, aka “Riding Blind!”  Learn the top tips to boost your confidence, speed and flow on new and old MTB trails!!

Is it still riding blind if you’re following another rider?  Dan rides partially blind (Pirate style!?) on the double black "Old Man Trail" at South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona.  Does a ‘big’ bike with more suspension travel, such as the Pivot Firebird or Yeti SB160 add confidence when riding blind on new trails?  Sage discusses how he utilizes multi-day fasting to optimize health for mountain biking.  Dan is surprised by what he learns riding his hardtail MTB on the famed National Trail at SoMo.  Also discussed are clipped-in pedals vs. exposure, gap jumps at Hawes Trails in Mesa, AZ, pumptrack fitness, ideal tire PSI, anxiety vs. intuition and much more!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: DennyJenettyMTB “Rider Spotlight” series - Dennis interviewed TrailSage as part of his new “Rider Spotlight” series.  Dennis is interviewing MTB YouTubers and riders with his unique perspective and sense of humor.  Sage had a blast talking to Dennis and has gratitude for their friendship!  Check out Dennis’s interview with Sage and support his Rider Spotlight series!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGD6BNe6Tgw

Dan: Meeting Kyle Anderson and Rob Drew! - Dan and “SoMo Jeff” met Kyle on a recent ride climbing up the gnarly National Trail at South Mountain.  Kyle was as friendly as he was talented!  This guy loves mtbing and was stoked to share some crazy lines and options we had never even considered!  We then met Kyle’s good friend, the legendary Rob Drew himself!  Rob was super cool and showed us how he climbs up the massive waterfall feature on National Trail.  Awesome people, awesome riders, awesome day on the bike!

MTB Tip of the Week:

When riding a trail for the 1st time and following someone, JUST FOLLOW.  Ask only about trail features that are above your comfort level.  Don’t ask for too much detail, your job is to stay present and ride.  The ride leader’s job is to shout-out any features you may not be comfortable with.  Use the techniques discussed in this pod to slay new and old trails alike!  You got this!!

No Dabs and Steep Slabs! How to Stay Perfectly Centered On Your Bike at All Times! [RNL S2, Ep 3]28 May 202501:02:23

Letting go of expectations leads to more flow and progression on our mountain bikes!  Whether it's climbing incredibly difficult technical trails without 'dabbing' (foot down) or confidently riding steep rock slabs, being centered on the bike and in our minds is the key to ultimate confidence, flow and fun on all rides!

This week Dan and Sage discuss seeing the infamous "White Line" trail in Sedona, AZ.  How riding with no expectations leads Jeff Winsor to an amazing 'no dab' climb up the notoriously difficult National Trail in Phoenix, AZ.  When is Too Slow actually harder on steep tech?  The guys examine the importance of being perfectly centered on the bike,  jumping hardtails vs. full suspension, and the right budget for upgrading an older mountain bike.  As always, there's a healthy dose of gratitude, appreciation and mindset tips for riding your best ride and living your best life!  Thanks for listening!

MTB Gratitude of the Week:

Dan: Dan's gratitude this week is his friendship with Sage - Dan expresses his gratitude to Sage for pointing out Dan's overthinking and anxiety.  Reminding Dan to go with the flow.  Release anxiety, release expectations, step into presence.  Dan is so grateful for Sage's ability to bring Dan back to presence.  On and off the bike!

Sage: Sage's gratitude of the week is his wonderful Father aka "Big Pizon" aka "Tom." - Sage describes a special moment with his family and all the support he receives from his Dad.  Sage's Dad believes in Sage.  Sage follows his passion and he is able to do so with the support of his amazing Father!

Can XC Bikes Enduro? MTB Pants, Hip Packs, Hardtails on Hard Trails & More! [RNL S1, Ep 50]22 Jan 202501:00:33

Do we need to 're' unlock mountain bike skills we have already learned but not used on the trails in a long time?  Episode 50 is a classic as we discuss the "Ride and Laugh Cabin/Museum," breakaway pants, hardtails on hard-trails, hip packs and much more!

Dan and Sage learn the best way to land your mountain bike while discussing how much water we need on a ride, hip-pack vs. hydration packs, more winter ride tips, and demos of Pivot Cycles at South Mountain.  Can a modern XC bike possibly replace a trail or enduro bike on gnarly trails?  What happens on the trail, stays on the trail!?  Join us for all the laughs, jokes, stoke, tips, encouragement and mountain bike joy!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Shimano MW 501 - Sage appreciates these high performance winter shoes.  The Shimanos are great on all but the coldest of rides.  The shoes are light-weight, waterproof and comfortable.  A good pair of fall/winter shoes is a worthy investment that should last many seasons!  Check out Sage’s review here: https://youtu.be/1rX7cOGaTuk

Dan: Hector's portable, mini, electric air compressor! - This tiny air compressor saved Dan a ton of time on the trail as it not only re-inflated his flat tire, but seated a tubeless tire to the rim!  This powerful little compressor was super impressive, so Dan immediately bought one!  Mini-Air Compressor: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D8JGD9X8

MTB Tip of the Week:

When climbing on your mountain bike, shift your weight to the front of the saddle.  This weight shift will keep you balanced and keep your rear wheel glued to the trail!  You are crushing your next climb!

Unlock Trials Skills on Your MTB to Add Confidence and Progression! [RNL S1, Ep 49]15 Jan 202501:04:51

There is no doubt that utilizing beginner to expert level "Trials Skills" on a trail will unlock infinite progression, confidence and ability on your next mountain bike ride!  Old habits may die hard, but when we practice being present on the bike, we can unlock all the balance, skill and ability we want!

Sage was super stoked to ride with "The Trail Boss," Jeff Lenosky at Mt. Penn in Reading, PA.  Jeff's incredible skills and experience teach us that anything is truly possible!  Sage also enjoyed being back on a smaller mountain bike as he sends a new trail gap at Brandywine Park in Delaware.  Dan experiences the exact ride he needs in beautiful Sedona, Arizona.  Besides incredible beauty, Sedona boasts all the slabs, tech, climbs and jumps any mountain biker could ask for!  National Trail in Phoenix, AZ claims a victim in a nasty crash but the ride is saved in an expected way!

The guys also discuss the new "Ride & Laugh" Strava group, mullet bikes vs. 27.5 bikes, trail gaps, breaking old riding habits, clipless pedals vs. flat pedals and so much more!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Dan:  Web MD / Internet Search!  - After Neil dislocated his shoulder on a ride on National Trail at South Mountain, the guys learned how to 'relocate' a dislocated shoulder from the internet!  While still on the trail, they were able to instruct Neil how to pop his shoulder back into the socket and get back to the trailhead.  Gratitude to the internet!  Mountain bikers are awesome! Heal up Neil!

Sage:  Sage's Ibis Mojo 3 - As Sage contemplates adding a new mountain bike to his garage, he is overwhelmed with gratitude for the excellent and trusty Ibis Mojo 3.  The Mojo has brought countless hours of flow, fun, joy and progression to Sage on the trails.  Thank you Ibis Mojo 3!

MTB Tip of the Week:

Endo Turn/ Nose Pivot!  Hit the front brake to unweight your rear tire then swing the bike to either side.  Practice small endo turns on the trail 1st.  You don't need to go very fast and put yourself on a slight turn to make the endo turn easier to initiate.

Watch & Learn! How Following Better MTB Riders Unlocks More Possibilities [RNL S1, Ep 48]08 Jan 202501:02:17

Mountain bikers may struggle to learn new skills or add fitness and that's completely normal. However, we can learn, progress and become stronger riders without the mental suffering!  Give yourself grace, recognize your inherent worthiness and celebrate all the small wins on this amazing mountain bike journey!

Share the stoke, progression and MTB lessons as Dan recounts two awesome South Mountain rides in Phoenix, Arizona!  First up was a National Trail Technical Climbing CLINIC with new friends Mike & Stefanie McDaniel!  The very next day Jeff, Joe, Ryan and Dan embarked on a massive 5 1/2 hour South Mountain Epic Trail Ride called "National Trail Coast to Coast."  Progression on tech, climbing, descending and fitness all in one massive ride!

The guys also discuss giving grace to ourselves around the holiday season (and all the extra eating we may have done!).  Let go of judgement and step into presence on the trail and in life!  Join the conversation as we debate MTB trials skills vs. moto skills, radial tires for MTB, tech climbs, body position, short travel vs. long travel bikes, learning from better riders and much more!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Nick, Christian & the Infinity Demo! - Sage sessioned some frozen jumps and learned from expert level jumpers. Thank you Keswick Cycles for the Specialized Stumpjumper 15 demo!

Hips Be Lying - MTB Goals and Body Position Tips for 2025 and Beyond! [RNL S1, Ep 47]01 Jan 202501:01:05

2025 means unlimited progression on our mountain bikes!  Join us as we refine our bike jumping skills, improve body position, increase confidence and unlock more flow & joy on the trails!

Dan & Sage discuss their 2025 MTB & Podcast goals.  Move forward from fear, make 'shapes' in the air and be open to advice!  How much does beer/alcohol play in your mountain biking?  Why is jumping a smaller bike more technical than a larger mountain bike?  Practice being present on easy trails, so you're 'locked in' and present on the harder trails!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Dan: Godeson Presta Tire Gauge - Dan appreciates this little gadget for checking mountain bike tire PSI before each ride!  Tire PSI is so important in mountain biking and this simple gadget confirms that Dan's tires are exactly where he wants them before each ride. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09GF2D326/

Sage: Ceres MTB Crew (Steve, Nic, Ed, and Mike) - Sage is incredibly grateful for the tour, advice, encouragement and stoke from this awesome crew of riders!  The trail building and the riding at Ceres has been a huge part of Sage's progression, jump journey and MTB joy!  Thank you fellas!

MTB Tip of the Week:

How to stay 'present' on the trail!  Before your ride, set an intention or a goal to work on.  Focus on one or two skills to practice and look for opportunities to practice as you ride.  Not only will this keep your mind in the moment, the practice will make you a better rider!

MTB Tech Climbing is Alive and Well on National Trail on South Mountain! [RNL S1, Ep 43]04 Dec 202400:59:48

Challenging technical climbs on analog mountain bikes is alive and well at the famous National Trail at South Mountain! What's the difference jumping steep "Dirt-Jumper Jumps" vs. "Mountain Bike Jumps" and should you significantly raise handlebar height to boost confidence in the air?

This week the guys discuss the joys of technical climbing on mountain bikes.  Is it better to practice jumping a smaller BMX/Dirt-Jump bike on steep (and scary!) jumps or to practice jumping the 'humps' at the local pump track? Will raising the handlebar height on a dirt-jumper make it feel more like a mountain bike?  Can an e-bike get us in trouble by attempting a climb that's too steep!?  Join us for a fun conversation about all things mountain biking!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Sennheiser Profile Microphone!  After some listener comments about the Ride & Laugh Podcast sounding 'professional,' Sage appreciates how our Sennheiser microphones do a great job for our mountain bike podcast.  Technology is awesome and we appreciate our equipment which allows the Ride & Laugh podcast to happen! MTB Tip of the Week:

When/if your bike isn't shifting correctly or staying in gear, stop & get off the bike.  Check to make sure your bolts are tight!  The bolt that secures the derailleur to the bike may be loose!  Also, make certain your rear wheel is on tightly so check that rear thru-axle!  In fact, check that both your wheels are on tight before each ride!

Hello E-bike! Goodbye Fitness? - Are Mountain Bikers Missing the Joy of Peak Fitness!? [RNL S1, Ep38]30 Oct 202401:04:10

Once upon a time, fitness was a prerequisite for trail fun on a mountain bike! E-bikes have changed the MTB game, but is that a good thing?

Join the guys for a conversation about the benefits of cardio fitness on our mountain bikes.  Since e-bikes have eliminated the need to 'earn your turns,' is fitness still necessary?  What are the reasons and benefits to train hard for your analog bike?  Does riding an e-bike make rocky/technical trails easier?  How should beginners learn mountain biking?  Pump tracks!  We also discuss more techniques like “torso tracking" and dynamic riding that you can take to your next ride!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Road bike!  2014 Giant TCX Pro - Sage has appreciation for his trusty road bike.  The road bike allows Sage to walk out his door and train for mountain biking.  Intense road riding prepares Sage's legs, lungs & body for an intense day of riding and climbing on his mountain bike.  Thank you road bike!

Dan: TrainerRoad "AI FTP Detection" - Dan has so much appreciation for the elimination of the dreaded "FTP Test" on the indoor trainer. FTP or "Functional Threshold Power" is the baseline often used for cardio fitness. Utilizing the "AI FTP Detection" means no more incredibly difficult FTP Tests, more training and an accurate FTP! https://www.trainerroad.com

MTB Tip of the Week

Save your old mountain bike parts.  Sage was able to help a friend with a broken jockey wheel with parts from an old derailleur.  So, think twice before you discard your old gear, you never know when it might come in handy.

Know When to Send It and When to Ride Away - MTB Intuition [RNL S1, Ep35]09 Oct 202401:00:36

Fun on a mountain bike often includes new and difficult features, but how do we know when we're truly ready to 'send it' on that tough slab, jump, drop or gnarly trail?  MTB skills are important, but more than anything, riders need the supreme confidence which comes from a quiet and insightful mind.

Join the guys for a candid and honest conversation about tuning into intuition, paying attention to signs, 100% commitment, self-worth, approval and doing things for ONLY the right reasons.  We are all more than worthy already so our bikes should only enhance our joy.  This episode, Dan and Sage discuss the surprisingly complex emotions of mountain biking decision making.  Live in the moment, trust your abundance and let go of thoughts that do not serve you.  Flow on the bike, Flow in life!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Dan: 4th Street Cafe - Dan appreciates this diner for all the pre-work meals he and Sage have had there.  Talking bikes and life over a meal and a cup of coffee is better than therapy!  Perfect start to a day! Gratitude to the 4th Street Cafe and gratitude for friendship! Check them out here: https://www.facebook.com/p/4th-Street-Cafe-100088899905568/

Sage: Dan pulling Sage off a wet jump trail.  Sometimes the signs are as obvious as your friends telling you something may not be a good idea!  Sage really wanted to ride a jump trail even though it was wet, and conditions were less than ideal.  Maybe it would have been fine and maybe not.  But Sage appreciates Dan making the call based on his intuition and moral compass.  Gratitude to friends and the guidance they often provide.  Together, "we got this!"

MTB Tip of the Week

Ride with Intention - Ride the bike, don't let the bike ride you.  Work the bike at all times but especially in wet conditions.  When you ride with intention, you will be instinctive and purposeful in your actions. Push into the ground, know when to get heavy and when to get light, when to brake and when to roll.  Trust your skills, eyes up, stay present, react and flow!

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Terry & David (and the MTB Ethos!). Sage hurt his back at Mt. Penn.  Terry & David didn't hesitate in helping Sage back to his car. These riders embody the spirit and culture of mountain biking.  High stoke, high character and just really kind individuals.  Mountain bikers are awesome!  Gratitude for your help and positivity Terry & David!

Dan: Dan's new & super protective downhill helmet is the Fox Rampage Pro Carbon MIPS Helmet. But downhill helmets only come with "D-Ring" fasteners which are extremely difficult/frustrating to hook and unhook with mtb gloves on! Dan did some searching and found an awesome D-Ring replacement on Amazon! There are several types but Dan purchased this unit and it works fantastic! https://amzn.to/4lmVk5k (Affiliate Link)

Say "Yes" to Progression! How to Simplify Challenging MTB Features [RNL S2, Ep 1]14 May 202501:01:15

Sage's visit to Arizona and all the amazing trails in the southwest are just further proof that anything is possible on and off our mountain bikes.  The boys talk about how to break down complicated features, jumps and drops on the trail in order to gain confidence for that important 100% commitment moment!  We are not who we thought we were... we're better! And so are you!

Ride & Laugh Season 2 kicks off with tips that you can take to the trails on your next ride!  Dan & Sage discuss in detail the mountain bike mindset techniques that allow them to flow through features, jumps and drops that may seem frightening or intimidating.  Let the ride be what it will be!  Stay present, stack wins, stay positive and have fun!  Flow on the bike, Flow in life!

MTB Gratitude of the Week:

Sage: Dan, Family & Arizona Friends!  - Sage is grateful for his trip to Arizona and the hospitality of Dan, Dan's family and all the Arizona riders!  Further evidence to say yes to life. Things can work out better than we could ever imagine!

Dan: Sage’s Friendship - Dan is so grateful for Sage's visit, friendship, positivity and progression.  All the rides, conversations, meals and road-trips.  There's something special about connecting with good friends and growing as people and riders together.

MTB Tip of the Week:

Break features down piece by piece.  Several features or jumps in a row may seem daunting to our minds.  So break it up into sections, get comfortable, build confidence and allow your mind to relax.  Stack wins, build confidence slowly, give yourself grace and see what happens!

We ain’t half steppin! Peak fitness for epic rides – MTB Training [RNL S1, Ep24]24 Jul 202401:01:21

Peak fitness for epic mountain bike rides is essential to feeling good and flowing on the trails! Is easy training in Zone 2 enough to get you ready for your next destination MTB trip?

Dan and Sage debate, "The Loam Ranger" claim that Zone 2 Training on a MTB e-bike is all you need. Are you fit enough to tackle epic rides like the Whole Enchilada or Mag 7? What trails, rides, and bike parks are on your bucket list?  Do you think the reputation of a trail, or a feature, may make it harder ride? Listen to intuition, stack wins, feel confident and unlock your skills! Just like the ladies of the amazing F1RE team!

Electrified Progression – We found a mountain bike cheat code! [RNL S1, Ep23]17 Jul 202401:03:41

An e-bike certainly means more laps, more jumps, more drops and more trails, but what are the downsides for us traditional mountain bikers?  Can an e-MTB be used as a tool for progression on your mountain bike?

Dan & Sage are excited to demo Specialized Turbo Levo e-bikes for 3 days of riding!  The guys use these modern marvels to session jumps and unlock MTB skills!  Day 1 we went to the Trexler Nature Preserve and sessioned the Return of Brian's trail and Jack O Diamonds.  Day 2 and 3 we headed to Mt Penn to hit the Skyline jumps.  The progression we experienced over those 3 days was incredible!!!  But we also noticed some downsides concerning the weight of the bike and power modulation.

So the question is, will Dan & Sage want to buy e-bikes now?!  Listen and find out!  Join the conversation about the benefits and drawbacks. Join the conversation about the benefits and drawbacks of e-bikes at https://www.youtube.com/@RideLaughPodcast or rideandlaugh1@gmail.com

It's a mountain bike thing - Part 1: Non-riders think we're nuts for this! [RNL S1, Ep21]03 Jul 202401:06:21

Trusting our bike skills and fully committing to a feature on the trail feels good!  Why do some mountain bikers thrive on high consequence challenges like jumps, drops, features and tech?

Entering the flow state on our mountain bikes is achieved with skill, enthusiasm and confidence!  When we're flowing, we know that anything is possible!  We seek out challenges on the trail that may seem risky or silly to non-riders.  But as mountain bikers, achieving competence or mastery of these challenges raises our 'stoke-meters' through the roof!

Dan: Metabolic Flexibility!  - Dan appreciates his body's ability to burn fat as fuel.  This amazing adaptation that all humans have unlocks metabolic flexibility.  Dan can easily fast (skip meals) for long periods.  This ability has been really useful this week with Dan travelling and working long hours at work.  No need to eat!  It's a super-power that is really useful on the trails as well!  The human body is amazing!  Thank you universe!

MTB Tip of the Week

How to properly shift into an easier gear while putting down intense power on a mountain bike climb.  Find the spot in your pedal stroke where you can let up a little bit... that's your opportunity to shift into an easier gear 'under load.'

Pumptrack Training Adds Speed, Control, Flow, and Fun on Your Next MTB Ride! [RNL Quick Rip]07 May 202500:23:01

"You gotta, 'Pump the Hump!'" Developing skills and technique on a pump track has direct application to your next mountain bike ride! Pump tracks teach free speed on trails along with the ability to crush berms, pull for jumps, stay perfectly centered and work on your manual game!

The guys may (hilariously) struggle to explain what a pump track is but they definitely agree that pump tracks are awesome for mountain bikers!  You don't need to be into hunchbacks to enjoy this episode, but it certainly won't hurt!  Ride and LAUGH!

Do we need advanced mountain bike features on the trail? [RNL S1, Ep20]26 Jun 202401:05:13

Overcoming difficult obstacles on the mountain bike, and in life, are key elements of progression, stoke and joy.  Does conquering fears on the trails lead to more fun and how challenging do you want your local trails to be?

We're here to progress our skills on the trail and progress in life!  Do hard things, feel good and unlock your mountain bike skills!  It feels good to work hard and overcome obstacles.  Dan and Sage debate how difficult trails should be.  Should the trails be doable for everyone, or progressive for beginners to experts?  Do you prefer tech trails or flow trails?  Listen along, laugh and comment!  We appreciate you!

Dan talks about riding Gold Canyon and South Mountain. Dan's Gold Canyon Ride: https://www.trailforks.com/ridelog/view/71975454/   South Mountain Preserve: https://www.trailforks.com/ridelog/view/71975456/

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Honda Odyssey - Sage's trusty Honda minivan has been a reliable mountain bike adventure machine!  From Sage's daily driver to MTB day trips to week-long MTB adventures, the Honda Odyssey has been the perfect vehicle for hauling bikes, gear and riders!  Thank you Honda Odyssey!

Dan: Platinum Sol - Dan talks about trying cold plunge!  It's really hard but feels really good.  Dan's wife found Platinum Sol in Arizona for sauna, red-light therapy and cold plunge. The owners and staff are so supportive and kind.  Thank you Matt, Klaire & Platinum Sol!  Learn more about Platinum Sol here: https://www.platinumsolaz.com/

MTB Tip of the Week

Make sure the camera on your phone is set up for 4k and 60 frames per second.  This will give you good quality video and allow you to slow it down in case you want to study the footage.

Strange MTB Terms, mountain bike dating apps, emergency pedal kicks and more! [RNL S1, Ep19]19 Jun 202401:05:17

MTB terms that we use all the time on the trails are stranger, and funnier, than we ever realized!  Terms like 'babyhead rocks' and 'false-flat' are ubiquitous to mountain biking, but actually sound kind of weird & crazy when you really think about it!

Dan & Sage discuss and joke about all thing’s mountain biking.  Would you date a mountain biker?  Do you agree on our take on group riding dynamics?  What's the difference between babyheads vs. rock-gardens? Laugh and comment on more benefits (and drawbacks) of single speeds, MTB dating apps, dirt jumpers, electric toothbrushes and more!

Dan visited the Phoenixville Bike Park with his daughter Ella and had an awesome time.  If you want to learn more about the Phoenixville Bike Park visit their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PXVBP and if you want to support this worthy mission check out “More Kids On Bikes” https://www.morekidsonbikespa.org

MTB Gratitude of the Week

Sage: Sage thanks his good friend Jess who hires him for freelance production work.  This work really helps to sustain Sage's MTB lifestyle (and channels!).  Thank you Jess!

Dan: Dan has so much gratitude for his daughters, Ella (13) & Summer (10).  After a great day of riding bikes with Ella and then attending Summer's elementary graduation, Dan is just overflowing with gratitude and love for his wonderful children.  Life is good!  Thank you kids!

MTB Tip of the Week

Save your old toothbrushes to clean your bike.  Manual toothbrushes work better than electric. LOL!  Bonus tip - Dish Soap doubles as a cheap degreaser!

Dan: Gratitude can come in all shapes and sizes.  This week Dan takes a moment to give appreciation to the weather apps on his phone. Something most mountain bikers are checking ALL the time.  Knowing the forecast and planning accordingly is really nice. Thank you weather apps!

MTB Tip of the Week

Prepare your bike and riding gear the night before your next ride!  Then when it's time to head to the trails, you're relaxed, not rushed and in a good head-space!  Have a relaxing drive to the trail, give yourself plenty of time to get ready in the parking lot.  Set yourself up for the best ride possible!
