Atleti for the title? It's Groundhog Day all over again: the weekend in La Liga
lundi 2 décembre 2024 • Duration 05:36
These short video reports are produced for my new Substack, Revista de la Liga - video reports from around La Liga, posted directly to your email. Please subscribe here and don't miss any of them...
...I hope you’re enjoying these reports on all aspects of Spanish football. I know 1993 was a long time ago but you’ve ALL seen Bill Murray starring in Groundhog Day. Despite tipping Atletico Madrid as title contenders in previous seasons and being brutally disappointed, I’ve nevertheless decided to stage my own Spanish Football Groundhog Day and mention them again, even in a conspiratorial whisper, as potential La Liga winners.
This was a weekend with a sacking, a Jornada where the big two suffered completely different experiences, and one where the big Basque clubs each won. But the focus is Cholo Simeone, Antoine Griezmann, and the dashing, daring Simeone Jnr: here comes Groundhog Day (two months early), here come eleven goals in their last two games for Atleti. Enjoy

mercredi 27 novembre 2024 • Duration 07:25
Pitchside at the Olympic Stadium, soon after Barcelona 3 Brest 0
A historic night for Robert Lewandowksi, who became only the third player in history to hit the 100-goal mark in the Champions League. He’s in decent company.
Let me talk you through a special night…

Spain win! La Roja are reborn in Berlin
lundi 15 juillet 2024 • Duration 15:27
As I leave Berlin - the city of Jesse Owens, David Bowie and now Lamine Yamal - I’m recording this final report from Euro 2024, where I have been embedded once more with the Spain team.
I saw the treble winners of 2008-12 up close too, and they may not have a prime Iniesta or Xavi, but in their own way I think this team is just as good.
Some of them spoke to me after the final, and what a joyful, brotherly bunch they are. The trophy is in good hands.

Classic Big Interview: Damien Duff Part Two
jeudi 28 décembre 2023 • Duration 44:19
Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Damien Duff from season one.
In part two, Damien describes working under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, and scoring in an incredible battle with Barcelona. Mourinho’s seven-page dossiers on his opponents were grist to the mill for this keen student of the game. There’s also great stuff about how Fulham manager Roy Hodgson plucked him from an unhappy spell at Newcastle and gave him a new lease of life at the wonderful Craven Cottage.

Classic Big Interview: Damien Duff Part One
mardi 26 décembre 2023 • Duration 37:42
Here’s another chance to hear my interview with Damien Duff from season one.
In part one, Damien describes how as a kid he instinctively knew to practice for hours alone to develop his ball skills. He tells about cleaning Tim Sherwood's boots and struggling with homesickness as a youngster at Blackburn. It was all character building, and at the FIFA World Youth Championships in 1997, where Ireland finished third, Damien knew in his heart that he was going to make it.
