The Price Is Retro

If this is your first time playing Price Is Retro, here’s how we play. I’m going to list off 4 or 5 games and everyone has to guess how much the lot is worth in total. Whoever is closest to the actual value wins that round! Everyone has a list and everyone guesses on each other's list. At the end, the player that won the most rounds wins the episode! But watch out for the robot Deus Guess Machina! He averages all of our guesses together for his own guess

@txTrey

Guys I've never played super Metroid more than an hour because I got stuck and gave up. I've beaten dread, fusion, and returns remake. Should I walk or run into playing super Metroid? Does it do anything better than the games that came after it? Or was it remarkable for being the first of the great Metroid games?

Dan - RetroLogic — 04/07/2024 5:29 PM

I play it for the first time ever a few years ago and it's undoubtedly one of my favorite games of all time now.

BUT I didn't play it without some help. There are a few points in the game where what you need to do next is unintentionally opaque. I own the paper guide so I limited myself to that. But if you get stuck, just look it up.

The game is amazing and 100% worth playing.

OctoRock_1982 — 04/07/2024 6:05 PM

As an adult with normal adult responsibilities, there are plenty of retro games that will give you a much more enjoyable experience using a guide when you don’t have endless childhood summers and afternoons filled with nothing but free time to explore every single pixel of a game.

Solo — 04/07/2024 6:41 PM

After coming off Metroid and many Summer afternoons firing your way thru an underground maze; do you feel Super Metroid in comparison was an easier game to finish since you had a working foundation now? (edited)

Mike Writes — 04/07/2024 7:40 PM

Which genre needs to make a comeback?

Claymation games

3D fighters that are very realistic

Guitar Hero games

Hong Kong style bullet time shooters

WW2 first person shooters that are not multiplayer

Mech sims

PrestoTheMagnificent — 04/08/2024 3:49 PM

Name 5 franchises that are better than super metroid

Gamers are debating the best generational leap. I would say the Saturn to Dreamcast was a pretty big jump, 128 bit, online gaming, PC engine gaming, arcade perfection. Others argue that the jump from GBA to PSP will never happen again in our time. I would consider the Wii to Switch if Nintendo didn't make a WiiU

DOS to Steam lol?

Canceled Games we wish we could play (or at least see finished)

Mario Motors

3ds

Yutaka “Yoot” Saito (Odama, Seaman, SimTower, Aeroporter) revealed its canceled development at 2018’s Reboot Develop conference.
Based on Yoot’s latest hobby of sculpting chunks of metal and him chatting about it with Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoru Iwata

Saito could not give a reason why the game was canceled.

-Game was based around the concept of building engines by shaving and sculpting chunks of metal.

-at one point intended to blow into DS microphone (because YS loves microphones)

-Unclear if you would actually ever race using these engines

-only two characters confirmed in concept art, Mario (duh) and an elderly scientist (no, not E. Gadd)

Super Mario Spikers

Wii

-volleyball-wrestling hybrid sport game to be developed by Next Level games team responsible for Mario Strikers games

-carried over experience from the also canceled WWE Titans: parts unknown (the same team worked on it and really didn’t want these ideas to go to waste

-WWE parts unknwn itself is super interesting:  crazy stylized take on pro wrestling, featuring fantastic environments and the ability to wrestle bears, crocodiles, sorcerers, etc.

- Nintendo felt the violence in the game was too realistic for something featuring mario’s characters

Untitled earthbound game (developed by Baten Kaitos team of Monolith Soft) possibly a remake?

If this is your first time playing Price Is Retro, here’s how we play. I’m going to list off 4 or 5 games and everyone has to guess how much the lot is worth in total. Whoever is closest to the actual value wins that round! Everyone has a list and everyone guesses on each other's list. At the end, the player that won the most rounds wins the episode! Future installments?

Interesting tidbits

The series is weird about region exclusivity:

ReBoot camp has yet to be confirmed for a release in japan

Advance Wars (1) was delayed in japan (presumably as a result of the US war on terror, though not officially stated).(the US released coincidentally released just before on September 10, 2001)  It released 3 years later in 2004 as Game boy Wars advance 1 & 2, bundled with the second game.

Famicom wars, Gameboy Wars 1-3 were of course Japan only

Japan also only got Days of Ruin as an eshop exclusive, not physical.

Designer Kentaro Nishimura stated that the success of Advance Wars shifted NIntendo’s attitude towards western tastes and without it Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade would never have been localized.

Reboot camp is not the first time Nintendo outsourced the series development to a third party: Game boy wars Turbo, 2, and 3 were developed by Hudson and Battalion Wars 1 and 2 by Kuju Entertainment.

Sonic Colors. Played the OG on Wii, it was my first Sonic game, and had good memories.

Bozo

F-Zero GX comes to mind. When I first played it in 8th grade I couldn't understand how anyone could even reach the credits,
Now after 100%-ing the game multiple times and beating all the staff ghosts, GX provides a catharsis and a sense of mastery that other racing games simply can't compete with. Everything else feels so pedestrian in comparison. It's gaming in its purest, most intense form and I love it.

Octorock (Adam)

Replaying games multiple times is a luxury that I haven’t really had in a long time. The first exception to this is probably going to be Breath of the Wild which I just recently started a quick playthrough in anticipation of Tears for Fears coming out in May. Conversely, having just started playing Metroid Prime Remastered, I’m amazed at how much I actually remember considering I haven’t played it in 20 years!

SoloSomething

Elden Ring currently playing a second time and will say opinion did change on this one.  The 1st play thru I got so frustrated multiple times I literally deleted the game off my PS5 because I was drained by the boss fights.

And now on my 2nd play it is my junk food game that I love to just jump and go raise Hell and see what trophy I can get.

Two Dollar Hero

Are there any games you actually never want to replay? I call these “big fish” games — I want them to stay rose tinted in my memory; I want to always remember the fish that I caught being massive and I don’t want to revisit it and see that it actually wasn’t. A good example of this for me is Journey. I’ll never play that game again - I had my experience.

  1. A) Puzzle Solving first Person games

Follow up on “John’s retro collection and potential downsizing”

ChrisHL94

I am definitely feeling what John described in the last podcast. I have a fairly modest game collection, but I almost never "have" time to play them. I keep telling myself I'll play these games one day, like when the kids are older and out of the house, or when I have fewer commitments in my life. I also wonder if this "time" will ever come, and should I just sell all these games and play what I have time for. I have a feeling I know what you guys think about this, but I'd be interested in hearing it.

WarriorofWASD

I feel this. I have tons of unbeaten games and a wishlist that is just as big. I had to redeem my game time by sticking to motion games (VR and Switch) for exercise and multiplayer with my friends to make it a healthy hobby.

“If this is your first time playing The Price Is Retro, this is how we play.

I’m going to list off 4-5 games, and everyone else has to guess how much the games are worth in total. Whoever’s guess is the closest wins that round, and the next person lists off their games. Everyone brought a list of games, and everyone guesses on each other’s lists.

At the end of the game, whoever won the most rounds wins the game!
But look out for Polterguest! He  guesses $300 on each list, and if he wins the game I have to give away a sticker from the merch store!”

All N Eric — Today at 1:16 PM

Easily one of my favorite moments was when I got to film all these celebrities giving shoutouts back to my Army unit.

Wizard Con Shoutouts

Eric Plunk — Today at 1:23 PM

I got to be part of the Nintendo Dads panel to talk about retro gaming at the con in my home town. And by panel I mean just me and Marty Estes  I was also introduced to the girl that voiced Ash from Pokemon.

adam — Today at 1:23 PM

i was going to origins game fair with my friends, and one of the features of the con was the ability to pitch a board game you designed to publishers with the intent of either getting advice or possibly being picked up by the publisher and have your board game sold.

my friend sam had been developing a game for awhile called ‘go for the krill’ a whale themed trick taking card game, and he was planning on pitching it at the convention. while we were in line to get tickets we struck up a conversation with the guy behind us we all hit it off, and it turns out he owned a board game company and he picked up my friends game and it’s gonna be launched in the near future!

OctoRock_1982 — Today at 2:07 PM

My favorite convention memory is getting to spending time with Dan, John and Trey.

DoubleD — Today at 2:35 PM

A good friend and I took our sons to Gamescom 2016 in Cologne, Germany (pictured is the FFXV wristband I still have from the event). It was such an amazing and over the top event, and while I was originally excited for myself, I quickly switched gears and I let my son take over and decide how we spent our time there. It was my first large gaming event like this, so I didn't realize how much time we would spend waiting in line though. My favorite thing there was the Tekken 7 booth, but it was bittersweet, because we waited in line for a while to play it, and then found out that my son was too young and they wouldn't let him play it even though I was his father. Very strange, but still a great experience overall.

Your Wallet's Defense Attorney — Today at 2:36 PM

I've only ever been to Anime Midwest, and that was more to chaperone my sister.  It was fun tho.  It was really surreal seeing a bunch of people dressed up in cosplay, and it was fun trying to see how many I recognized.  I got a picture with Pepsi Man.  We went to a few panels of varying quality, from a professional samurai to some people who just bought a ton of Kazoos.  We did Karaoke, and I sang Call Me Maybe, The Kirby Right Back At Ya Theme, Bye Bye Baby (Giants home run theme), Full Disclosure (Steven Universe), and Ya Got Trouble (Music Man).  Someone sang Escape from the City (SA2) and the Phineas and Ferb Theme Song.  It was a good time!

txTrey — Today at 5:25 PM

I took my son to CGF yesterday morning near opening time and he played a demo of a game called Ghost Ship Grannies.  The game is an RPG about a group of grannies who get shipwrecked and you have to find the other grannies and do RPG things.  Then when I obligatorily signed up for the email list after talking to the game's artist I saw 2 lines up on the sheet someone had signed up with the SAME FIRST.LAST@gmail.com address as my son's name!  It was the most coincidental moment that has happened to me at a convention.  That was the question, right?

Topic: our favorite Beat-em-ups!

OctoRock (Adam) — Today at 9:46 AM

My three favorite non-TMNT bmups are The Simpsons arcade game, Battletoads and River City Ransom.

The Simpsons may actually beat out TMNT for me as far as the 4 player arcade experience goes. Just such a hilarious and well crafted game.

Battletoads speaks for itself, I’m not sure if it’s a full blown bmup because of the platforming and speeder bike levels, but they teamed up with Double Dragon so that’s gotta say something.

River City Ransom is probably the only oddball here. A great semi-obscure NES game that thankfully a lot of people are now aware of thanks to River City Girls. One of my favorite NES titles and up there with Battletoads for me.

the Well-Red Mage — Today at 9:50 AM

Shredders Revenge is AH MAH GAHHHHHHHH so good. A beat em up nobody gives enough love to is Fight N Rage. Seriously amazing.

ElPeeDee (Liam D) — Today at 10:09 AM

mine has to be Batman Returns for SNES.  I loved the grabbing & throwing mechanics, breaking parts of the environment and the bat gadgets you could employ.  the sprite art was gorgeous and, while I hadn't even seen the movie at that point, I loved the characters

twodollarhero — Today at 10:25 AM

For me, it’s Scott Pilgrim. It’s not the most mechanically dense beat-em-up, but I’ve come to realize that I prefer the River City Ransom approach of simpler gameplay, but a more fleshed out world with characters, shops, etc. Paul Robertson’s artwork is gorgeous and the soundtrack by Anamanaguchi is among the greatest in video game history, full stop.

CrazyGreekDre — Today at 10:51 AM

Turtles in time, Final fight both sNES and TMNT arcade game

ChrisHL94 🇨🇦 — Today at 11:47 AM

I’ll vouch for the Streets of Rage series. My favourite is SOR II, but I like them all. The sequel on the Nintendo Switch is great as well.

solo_something — Today at 12:00 PM

NARC.  Still can see it in the arcade when closing my eyes.

SpiderShan — Today at 1:45 PM

The TMNT games are easy favorites but I have a couple others that are right up there for me.  The first is the X-Men 4 player Arcade game.  So many quarters with my friends at the small pizza joint in our town that had this cabinet.  The second game I want to shout out is Death and Return of Superman on the SNES.  This was a pretty great adaptation of the comic event and allowed you to play as all the various Supermen at the time (Superman, Superboy, Cyborg Superman, and Eradicator).  I lost track of the amount of times I played through it wanting to relive the story.

WarriorofWASD — Today at 2:18 PM

I was a big fan of Jaleco's Final Fight  knock off like  Rival Turf. You could do a code that would let you edit all the bad guy's names: Butt Man, Turd Ferguson, Captain Urine...etc

Eric Plunk — Today at 9:37 PM

Late entry here! Have you heard the good word about Die Hard Arcade? I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it recently on the Sega Saturn. A seemingly endless amount of various weapons, moves, and 3D low-poly charm make this short but endlessly replayable gem must-play. The same could be said for it’s Dreamcast sequel Dynamite Cop. On a related note, has anyone tried Breakneck City on Switch? I’ve been curious about the Die Hard Arcade vibes it gives.

WarriorofWASD — Today at 9:31 AM

The Game Genie was known for some game altering codes that did ridiculous things to the game. There was a code for Street Fighter 2 where you could replace the Capcom logo with Balrog.
In Mortal Kombat 3 you could unlock a Space Invaders game where Kahn would say "You Suck" if you lost.

SpiderShan — Today at 9:49 AM

Growing up on the Nintendo, the first code I ever learned was the classic Konami code! It was the only way I could get through Contra and Life Force!  Up up down down left right left right a b a b

neoprime33 — Today at 10:43 AM

I don't remember which magazine I got it from (NP or EGM), but this was one I used all the time, so I could build the city of my dreams in Sim City for the SNES (source: IGN)...

Easy Money

First spend all your money. Put the game on the fastest setting and wait for the tax grid to appear. As soon as the screen turns black hold L + R. While holding these buttons change all settings to 0% and exit the screen (don't release the buttons yet).

While still holding these buttons, use the menu to return to the tax screen. Raise all settings to 100% except for the tax rate. Set that to 20%. Exit the tax screen and the menu, then release L and R.

Congratulations! You now have $999,999. You might want to lower the tax rate now. Give those SimCitizens a break!

OctoRock (Adam) — Today at 10:55 AM

I always liked DK mode in Goldeneye. 🤣

Eric Plunk — Today at 12:46 PM

Unlocking various celebrities and developers in NBA Jam was awesome. The Beastie Boys vs Bill Clinton anyone?

Flightsy — Today at 1:22 PM

There’s a part of Mario and Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story called the Lunbar Nook where you are basically forced to take a break as Toadbert and Toadstool drink tea and listen to soft music.  But if you talk to Toadbert BEFORE you go to the Lumbar Nook when it is made available, he tells you he had a dream about him having tea and time passing really slowly.  He then says he heard the sound of ABXYLRYXBA being pressed to make time go at a normal speed.  Doing this in the Lumbar Nook speeds up the wait time to a couple of seconds.  You don’t have to talk to Toadbert to do this, the cheat works no matter how you learn of it.  I found it in an old cheat book I got from my elementary school’s book fair!

PrestoTheMagnificent — Today at 2:43 PM

I love the “cheat codes” that just let you do ridiculous things. Lego Star Wars the complete saga comes to mind

hambone jonny — Today at 3:20 PM

My parents bought me a NES game genie in an attempt to delay getting me a SNES.  Man I loved that thing.

DesolateSaturation — Today at 4:48 PM

The Scott pilgrim video game had a cheat that could indirectly get you infinite money. “To do the cheat, the player will need to be inside of a level, preferably away from enemies. This is best done with 2-players. Basically, the way the cheat works is that the player will input it and instantly die. Although when they die, they will drop $50. The second player can then pick up the money and revive the player to repeat the process. Players can get thousands of dollars within minutes without needing to do anything else. This is called the Noble Sacrifice.” (Screen rant)

The code for the cheat was:

PlayStation: Hold X and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Circle

Nintendo Switch: Hold B and press Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, A

Using this cheat made getting achievements and leveling up characters you hadn’t used much require less grinding. That way you could play later stages with friends and not have one person stuck with a useless character.

The price is RETRO

“If this is your first time playing The Price Is Retro, this is how we play.

I’m going to list off 4-5 games, and everyone else has to guess how much the games are worth in total. Whoever’s guess is the closest wins that round, and the next person lists off their games. Everyone brought a list of games, and everyone guesses on each other’s lists.

At the end of the game, whoever won the most rounds wins the game!
But look out for Polterguest! He guesses $300 on each list, and if he wins the game I have to give away a sticker from the merch store!”

Obviously Mario vs DK itself, although I’ve only played the one for Retro Rewind (Mini-Land Mayhem), I recently bought the rest on the 3DS eshop so I’ll have a chance to play them.  I’ve also been enjoying Box-boy, but I just started that…

Wario Land 2 and 3

Stevens_NES — Today at 3:47 PM

The Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle games. I haven't played much of them, but playing it gave me Mario vs DK vibes. You don't jump though so that makes it not really a platformer.

DesolateSaturation — Today at 4:40 PM

My favorites are Little Nightmares, Thomas Was Alone, Human Fall Flat, and Unravel.

I also think Forgotten Anne and Gris are worth checking out, but they’re more cool due to visual esthetic than gameplay.

Does Super Paper Mario count?

HeyItsChad! — Today at 9:32 PM

Other than the Mario DK I did like Solomon’s Key. I had never played it until the Switch Online service showed up.  It is a close second place to MDK

So #JurassicJune is right around the corner and I'm curious what are your favorite Dinosaur games? I know Dan will probably say Turok, but I'm curious if there are others you may like or have just even played.

Questions

ElPeeDee (Liam D)

not sure if this fits for a community couch but putting here in case anyone has any similar experiences...

so I FINALLY beat the 1st Resident Evil game (HD remake on Switch).  In the past I've beaten RE2 on 64, RE4 on Gamecube, Code Veronica on Dreamcast, and Revelations on Wii U.

I'm glad I did it, it's something I've been meaning to play for a while.  unlike those other games, I don't think I'll ever play RE1 again.  there is just too much about it that seemed dumb/cheap, that I ultimately used a guide for the final 1/3 of the game

I currently own it for Gamecube, the DS remake (which lists for ~100$) and the digital Switch version.  I'm thinking of selling at least the DS copy, if not the GC one as well.

TL; DR does anyone else have similar experiences where they finally played a backlog game theyve collected for a while and ultimately decided that they would sell that game after finishing it?

Arcades:

Since whole cabinets were made for one game, truly unique controls could be tailored to a single game.

Joysticks and buttons became standard quickly, but button placement could vary.

Trackballs (Centipede, Marble Madness)

Dials (pong, arkanoid)

Steering wheels and pedals (like every racing game)

Light guns (like every arcade shooting game)

Rotating Joysticks (Ikari warriors and other SNK games)

DDR

Consoles(main):

Atari Joystick w/ 1 button

NES controller gives us the D-Pad
Genesis does 3 buttons for some reason.

4 face buttons on the SNES, another industry standard

Sony’s Dual shock Controller gives us dual analog, which becomes a gold standard for industry.

N64 Controller: it’s not that bad

Dreamcast: divisive. But ergonomic. I wish the stick was more grippy.

Gamecube: perfection (except that D-pad)

3rd party and peripherals:

Fightsticks - still tournament standard for most fighting games, esp. Street fighter.

HOTAS or Yoke (hands on throttle and stick) - flight sims
Light guns (NES Zapper, Master System, Super Scope)
Powerglove

Gameboy Tilt Controls
Microphone - N64, Gamecube

SNES Mouse (and N64 mouse for DD)

R.O.B.
Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc.

Alternative controllers (that you might play any game with)
NES - Max, advantage, dogbone

Genesis - 6 button

Playstation - the aforementioned dual shock

Community:
Question: I wanna hear about the weirdest 3rd party controller you've ever used.

Fight Crab Fanatic — 03/28/2022

The Steam controller had a track pad instead of a right thumb stick. The pad had to be edited for every game on Steam. The trackpad had a cool haptic feedback

WondrousWill — 03/28/2022

I've used the Onimusha katana for PS2. I remember it somehow being better than I expected, but not good enough to use a 2nd time. Fortunately, it wasn't mine. It made for a very cool display piece, though.

SpiderShan — 03/28/2022

Do those Wii lightsaber Wiimote holders count? Not really controllers themselves. I’ve always wanted a DQ Slime controller.

ChrisHL94 🇨🇦 — 03/28/2022

I wouldn’t call it weird but I loved the NES Advantage growing up. It was the real arcade feeling that I enjoyed the most. The rapid fire A and B buttons were great as well. I would unleash a hail of fire balls playing any of the Mario games.

OctoRock (Adam) — 03/28/2022

This one is a little bit out there, and it might be a loose fit, but a family friend of ours in the ‘80s had a Captain Power set complete with the spaceships and multiple corresponding VHS tapes. It’s crazy to think about now, but the ships were basically equal parts toy and light gun controller that worked similarly to the NES Zapper. But there was no game console, the ships would interact with certain elements contained within the video playing from the VHS tapes. (I think there was also a TV show that aired that the ships could interact with, but I don’t think it lasted long).

The ships even had an action figure in the cockpit that would eject and fly across the room if you lost the mission.

Seems really archaic now, but as a 5 year old it was like magic.

Flightsy — 03/28/2022

I’m afraid I don’t have a fun story for this one.  The only 3rd party controllers I’ve used are fake Gamecube controllers, where the only notable thing was that the analog stick wore out really quick.

SkinnyMatt — 03/29/2022

Epyx made a joystick. We used these for the C-64.  It looks funny, but man was it comfortable.  The button placement was great, and it was easy to hold.  ESL orally good while playing Summer Games and Summer Games II on the Commodore.  FYI, they made one for the NES too!

My love for the criminally underrated Codename STEAM is well documented at this point, but I’m constantly thinking about how good Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was. Every time it comes up in conversation, it’s like a fever dream. That concept had no business being that good of a strategy game.

the Well-Red Mage —
FF Tactics, somedays my all-time favorite Final Fantasy ❤️

Fight Crab Fanatic —
Jeanne D'Arc for the PSP was really good (and unforgiving)
Mystaria Realms of Lore for the Sega Saturn

oops —
Tactics ogre and final fantasy tactics (my favorite game of all time)are the goats but a very underrated game I really enjoyed was arc the lad twilight of spirits on ps2.

ElPeeDee (Liam D) —
the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars GBA games are favorites of mine since I played them on my SP in the back of my college Economics classes (woops).  in the broader strategy sense, i spent a lot of time playing the Command & Conquer series over the years and just started playing through Warcraft 2 again.  I love base building and planning out offensives

Flightsy —
Does Pikmin count?  I don’t really play tactics games, but they’ve always seemed interesting.  Actually, this leads into a CCQ of my own!  What are some good Strategy and Tactics games I could try out?

solo_something —
FE 3 houses.  Love how it’s tactics and some drops of rpg running around the grounds as I complete quest, reunite missing items, and take time for a cup of tea; sometimes from what I planted.  Also, helping a girl realize she doesn’t have to stay locked up in her room.

SpiderShan —
I have the most experience with Fire Emblem games which I first picked up on a whim on GameCube (Path of Radiance). Since then I’ve played nearly all the English released games in the series. I don’t mind the newer games like Three Houses, but I miss the older ones without the dating/marrying/kids stuff.  My favorite strategy game is probably the original FF:Tactics.  The GBA sequel was okay but I wasn’t crazy about the Law mechanics which bogged down the battles.  I really want to get into Triangle Strategy one of these days!

Questions
Flightsy —
CCQ: How do you find good retro stores near you?  I’ve tried looking it up and only stuff like Game stop and Disc Replay seems to come up.

Fight Crab Fanatic —
If you had to collect a niche of retro games what would you pick?
(example: WWII games, Wrestling games, The DS Imagine Babysitters series)

oops — 03/19/2022
What’s a game you missed when it was new then revisited later and you could not believe how good it was?

The Price Is Retro

If this is your first time playing Price Is Retro, here’s how we play. I’m going to list off 4 or 5 games and everyone has to guess how much the lot is worth in total. Whoever is closest to the actual value wins that round! Everyone has a list and everyone guesses on each other's list. At the end, the player that won the most rounds wins the episode! But watch out for the robot Deus Guess Machina! He averages all of our guesses together for his own guess

  • The developer of the Mario & Luigi games began as a fledgling RPG house. Making both the japanese only Koto Battle: Tengai no Moribito for GBC and Tomato Adventure for GBA.

    • In Tomato Adventure the player, as DeMille, a tomato-hater in the Ketchup Kingdom, fights his way from his outcast village to rescue his girlfriend. The in-game weapons are toy-like and the battles against opponents involve minigames. Some consider it to be the spiritual precursor to Mario & Luigi.

  • Tetsuo Mizuno, Square's second president, and Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa, who were game directors at Square. The name AlphaDream, meaning the 'first dream', is a play on Final Fantasy, Square's most notable series.

  • Alphadream was also notable for being the developer for the Hamtaro license and created several games using the IP.

    • Specifically, the later games in the series, Rainbow Rescue and Ham Ham games, both of which featured minigames that served as a prototype for those featured in mario & luigi series.

  • On October 1, 2019, AlphaDream declared bankruptcy, citing sluggish revenues and high development costs, and being unable to keep up with growing debt (which as of March 2018 was over ¥465 million)

    • Many of the staff were scooped up Monolithsoft, ILCA, and Nintendo.

SpiderShan — Today at 6:17 PM

@everyone a little late notice but we will be talking about the Mario & Luigi games tonight for the next episode of RetroLogic. We’d love to hear about your experiences with the series?  What games have you played?  What are your favorites in the series?

Just being Bruce — Today at 6:50 PM

Oh sorry guys, but I can’t leave any messages for you about that because I’m concentrating on the Oilers winning all the way!!!!!!!!!

Your Wallet's Defense Attorney — Today at 7:08 PM

The Mario & Luigi games are my childhood Mario RPGs.  I had Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story as a kid.  I view the series as an underrated classic.  I own and have played the core four games, but I only beat PiT and BiS.  I almost got to the end in Superstar Saga, tho.  I haven't played Paper Jam.  I think my favorite is absolutely Bowser's Inside Story.

Eric Plunk — Today at 8:07 PM

I’ve only dabbled in the series but have played enough them to enjoy their comedic charm. Superstar Saga has a special place in my heart because it was the last Christmas gift I got from my Grandmother before she passed.

Have you ever or would you ever buy a game that you know you cannot play right now, but buy it for the backlog (cause you want to play it eventually)? If so, do you have an example? If no, why not?
