335 - Your Sinclair Top 100 part 126 Jan 202405:10:55

Your Sinclair was one of the "Big 3" Spectrum magazines, alongside CRASH and Sinclair User.  It was considered to be more humourous and zany than its contemporaries.  Its final issue was in September 1993, which was an incredible run, considering the 16-bit computers had taken foothold years prior.  In 1991, they published their top 100 games list, which was compiled by staff writer Stuart Campbell.  It was a comprehensive list of games featuring many classics (and some curveballs).  Join Drisky and Kingy as they go through the games on this list.  With thanks to Gary Arnott for recreating that final cover for our own poster for this episode.

239 PC Gaming and Upgrades08 Mar 201902:12:24

The RGDS boys sit down to chat about memories of PC gaming during the 90’s and the numerous Hardware upgrades they purchased to play the latest and greatest games.

Hear why Matt L can’t be trusted to buy a good Graphics card, why Drisky was king of the gaming world (for a while at least), why Kingy overpays for corporate junk and Matt A believes the PC’s time is now (as well as then…).

If you played PC games in the 90’s and know your RTS from FPS, your 3DFX from PhysX and your HBP from your AGP, you’ll have a blast dipping back in time with this episode.

238 Filling in the Blanks22 Feb 201901:11:10

Kingy is joined by special guest, Will Brooker to discuss the phenomena of "Filling in the Blanks" in gaming. Where the imagination takes over the experience suggested in the particular game.

This episode is based around the 8-bit era where the games were a lot more basic and the players own imagination took the game to a new level.

Will has submitted an academic paper on this very topic and discusses it in the show.

Show notes:-

Details of Will's Spectrum documentary (as discussed in the episode)

I’m currently filming my first round of interviews with Spectrum gamers - people local to me who can fund their own travel to the university - and I’m going to apply for funding to cover the costs of more distant interviews.

In the meantime I’m inviting Spectrum gamers to mail me their video memories. Here’s what I’ve sent my respondents so far.

We can ask your listeners to send in their videos, and they can check details in the show notes.

The end goal for this project is a short film about Spectrum fans which will be screened at the Centre for Computing History as part of their 2020 Spectrum anniversary celebrations. It may also be screened and hosted elsewhere -- I'll keep you informed if that happens. I'll be gathering material over a long period, with the aim of having the film edited in 2020-2021. I should be able to show you clips before that.

I'm currently interviewing fans who live close to me, and then I will be applying for funding to cover the cost of interviewing more distant fans. I hope I may also be able to interview you face to face.

Meanwhile, if you are willing, I'd like you to submit your responses to some questions by video. The questions are at the bottom of this email.

This can be as simple as you like -- no problem with using a phone, though if you have other camera equipment, please feel free to use it. The videos will be compiled into my documentary film as a montage of responses, so a mixture of different styles and quality will be fine.

Feel free to film your responses to them separately or all at once. There is no right or wrong way of doing this -- just please make sure that I can hear you clearly with no background noise, that you're well-lit and in focus.

If you want to include your own Spectrum and original cassettes in the video, please do.

Once you've filmed your responses, please upload them to https://wetransfer.com/

and send them to me at drwillbrooker@gmail.com. (My gmail account has more room than my work one).

Or you can attach them directly to an email and send them to me at drwillbrooker@gmail.com.

Thanks very much for taking part, and if you have any questions, do let me know.

I'll very much appreciate all contributions.

Questions for Spectrum fans

1. Your name, your age now, and where you’re from.

2. What Spectrum did you first have, and when? How old were you?

3. What did the Spectrum mean to you?

4. What were your favourite games?

5. Please read podcaster Gordon King’s review of Avalon here.  He talks about how he was entirely drawn into the world, experiencing fear and shivering in the cold dungeon.

http://girnygamer.scottige.com/2017/04/13/avalon-the-greatest-game-of-all/

Did you feel immersed like this in any games? Please say as much as you want.

6. What do you remember about the role the Spectrum played in your friendships and family relationships? (For instance, swapping games with friends, two-player mode with a brother or sister; your parents buying you games for Christmas; taking the Spectrum to a grandma’s house or on holiday...?) Say as much as you want.

7. Can you still experience the magic and wonder of the Spectrum in the 80s, or is it something of a specific time, which has now been lost?

Please feel free to send any photos of yourself from the time, and/or you at the Spectrum, your bedroom, Spectrum games from the time – or, even better, video from the time that you are happy for me to use.

236 Resident Evil25 Jan 201901:28:56

Welcome back to RGDS. We’ve deployed our R.G.D.S Bravo team of Matt A, Matt L and Jon back to the Spencer Mansion to battle the evil demons of destruction, in celebration of the newly released Resident Evil 2 Remake.

The boys discuss their favourite memories of the original Resident Evil, the 1996 seminal Survival Horror experience for PS1, Saturn and PC, memories of acquiring via slightly dodgy means on Import 6 months before a PAL release, and Matt A had a few nightmares he’d like to forget about.

We also give a quick run through some of the games that inspired the original RE, and a round-up of the immediate sequels.

If you like Shotguns, Tyrants, and a Jill Sandwich, this is the podcast for you.

226 Console Concepts 213 Aug 201801:21:17

Welcome to the first of several episodes that RGDS will be releasing to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Sega Mega Drive in Japan, hosted by our very own Matt L.

The Mega Drive was a big hit amongst fans of the early grey import scene, and we thought there was nobody better to guest on the show than Colin Dimond, the former co-owner of the infamous Console Concepts import store, based in Stoke-on-Trent during the late 80’s and early 90s.

Colin gives his expert insight into the impact the MD had on the import scene, where the MD lays amongst its competitors of the time and the legacy it left on the industry.

This is a fascinating conversation, and if you enjoyed Colin’s last appearance on RGDS in EP 197 (The Golden Age of Imports), you’ll simply love this one too.

#KeepItImport

All music on this episode is sourced from YouTube channel - Savaged Regime.

The author reproduces famous video game tracks (particularly Mega Drive) using the MD’s own Yamaha 2616 sound processor, but vastly more detailed. Some of the tracks you will recognise, but will never have heard them so good!

Title music - Solar Modulation - original piece

30:17 - Track 3 - Mortal Kombat II - Title/Character Select (YM2612 arrangement)

224 PlayStation Vs Saturn13 Jul 201801:54:23

Welcome to episode 224 of RGDS Podcast, and in this episode we sit down to discuss the import war of the 32-bit era, Sega Saturn vs Sony PlayStation.

In a modern day top-trumps, Matt Aguilera sides as champion of PS1 and Aaron White puts up his dukes to protect the honour of the Sega Saturn. Popular opinion during their heyday would see PS1 win this battle hands down, particularly if sales figures have anything to do with it. However as more and more have sample the delights of each machine over the years, we feel the debate is once again wide-open.

Host of the show Matt Lambourne plays the role of independent adjudicator as the champion of each console choose their favourite titles from 11 different game genres to determine which is the greatest machine of the 32-bit age.

Stay tuned to this one, hilarity ensures as two grown men reignite playground style petty squabbles and we re-visit some amazing games of one of gaming’s greatest generations.

219 Amiga PD and Shareware Games04 May 201801:42:07

In this episode of RGDS, we discuss the often forgotten scene of the Amiga Public Domain and Shareware scene, that in many ways kick started the vibrant Indie scene we see today.

So come and join us as Kingy and Drisky take you through ten great examples of the day.

We have also collected up these amazing games (and many other favourites that didn't me the show) as well for you to enjoy on an emulator.  See it as the ultimate coverdisk.  Please give these classics a try, we love to hear you memories or what you think of the games.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L-7NHRid7DmCF8FG5XL-Gru5niiF2-Dr/view?usp=sharing

Also we discuss a favourite Disk magazine of the day Grapevine and have collected up every one.  This really was for many of us the internet of the day.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1O2oijgNVwuk7IykXCsRTJA_rAzguv4dk/view?usp=sharing

To play the games and disks you will need an emulator such as Win UAE.

http://www.winuae.net/download/

You will also need the Kick Starters and Rom which you probably can fine... or if you want to cut out all the hassle then https://www.amigaforever.com/ is a great legal emulator to use.

213 The Jon Ritman Interview09 Feb 201802:08:17

Hello and welcome to another fantastic episode of RGDS.  This time we interview a true legend, with the brilliant Jon Ritman.

Jon, the man behind such classics as Head Over Heels, Batman and Match Day games gives us an in-depth interview spanning across his full career.  He is a true gent and I guarantee you will adore this in-depth interview.

Show Notes:

The ZX81 book that taught Ritman Basic in 1 week was Sinclair ZX81 BASIC Programming written by Steven Vickers

http://zxnext.narod.ru/manuals/ZX81_Manual.pdf

The book that finally taught Ritman how to write Machine Code was Mastering Machine Code by Tony Baker

http://www.users.waitrose.com/~thunor/mmcoyzx81/

Ritman Raiders (1982) On the ZX81

A competent shooter on the ZX81 based on an obscure arcade game Jon stumbled across whilst camping with some mates.

 Play the Game Online Here:

The Inspiration for Ritman Raiders we believe was an obscure 1980 Irem game called Uniwar S.  Ritman would have played the bootleg version called Sky Raiders.  The game is playable in MAME but here is a video of the game running  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRrt_OSZnkY.

Cosmic Debris (1983) On the ZX Spectrum

Jon next turned his sites to a great Asteroids clone.

 Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

3D Combat Zone (1983) On the ZX Spectrum

Always looking to push himself, Jon next tried to tackle 3D graphics on the Spectrum, taking on the Atari game Battlezone.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

Dimension Destructors (1983) On the ZX Spectrum

Jon's next game was his first original game, being a 3D space shooter.  It is great fun and is similar to how Star Raiders played.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

Bear Bovver (1983) On the ZX Spectrum

After someone brought in the Mattel Intellivision and the game Burger Time,  Jon felt inspired to take on a clone that could rival his heroes at Ultimate Play The Game.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

Match Day (1984) On the Various

Always looking for what was popular, at a computer show he realised there was a desperate need for a Spectrum version on International Soccer on the C64.  So despite having no personal interest in the sport, Jon set about making the best football series on the Spectrum.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

Batman (1986) On the Various

Jon next set his sights on a licensed game.  Being the honour of the first Batman video game ever released.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

Head Over Heels (1987)

Jon would build on what he had learned from the Batman game, to make the second best Isometric game ever released.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

Match Day 2 (1987)

Jon would return to football for an amazing sequel.

Download the game here

Play the game using the Speculator emulator or the free online emulator here http://torinak.com/qaop

GLAM (1988 - 1992)

Jon would look to write development tools behind the scenes.  This was the tool Rare used, so if you played Donkey Kong Country or any of their Gameboy or SNES classics, then chances are it was written using Jon's development tool.

Monster Max (1994)

Jon would use the GLAM tool for a new isometic game for the Gameboy.  Called Monster Max it truely is the best isometric game ever released.

Bonus Drunkcast Xmas Party II24 Dec 201702:27:22

Welcome to the 2nd annual RGDS Drunkcast Xmas Party! As with last year’s show, this episode will contain some highly offensive content (at least for the first hour or so), so please do not listen with children present, or if you’re easily offended.

If you decide to listen and then wish to complain, we don’t wanna hear it to be honest.

The boys get to together for end of year Christmas drinks to discuss the year of great podcasts and tell funny stories. If you listened to it last year, you’re bound to enjoy this one, and we even squeeze in some fairly serious gaming chatter in the final hour.

All of us at RGDS would like to wish our listeners a very Merry Christmas and hope you can enjoy listening to this show over the holiday period.

We’ll catch you next year!
