Today, I’m speaking with Darius Foroux. Darius’s work has been featured in Time, NBC, the Observer, and the Economist. Darius teaches online classes on wealth building and has written eight books, including his newest work, The Stoic Path to Wealth: Ancient Wisdom for Enduring Prosperity.

In his new book, Darius applies ancient wisdom to the chaos of the modern-day market. He investigates how discipline, emotional distance, and self-mastery–techniques passed down over thousands of years–give us the tools to live better financial lives and weather economic storms today.

In this conversation, we explore how his experience as an immigrant helped shape his financial philosophy, why Stoicism is so uniquely suited to making sense of modern-day problems, and the beauty of staying on this path to build a purposeful life and legacy.

353: A Retirement Dilemma: Wisdom You Need Before Leaving Full-Time Work with Steve Lopez20 Mar 202300:56:10

Today, I’m talking to Steve Lopez. Steve has been a writer for the Los Angeles Times since 2001 and a four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist. He’s won over a dozen national journalism awards and three local news Emmys, and he’s written three novels, including The Soloist, which was adapted into one of my favorite movies.

In Steve’s new book, Independence Day: What I Learned About Retirement from Some Who’ve Done It and Some Who Never Will, he explores the meaning of work and how it defines us in a combination of memoirs, interviews, and guidance.

The book features conversations with a wide variety of people, including some who chose not to retire (like director Mel Brooks) and those who simply can’t retire, as well as aging scientists, geriatric specialists, and psychiatrists.

In today’s conversation, Steve and I talk about what it means to live with purpose and passion, how to tell which of the five categories of retirees that you fall into, and the big financial trends we should all be thinking about as the world around us changes.

347: How the Retirement Quotient (RQ) Test Helps Redefine Your Retirement with Robert Laura20 Feb 202300:40:27

Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Robert Laura back to the podcast. Back in 2020, we had a great conversation about the ways COVID was impacting retirement. Now, we’re shifting gears from a “No-Regrets Retirement Plan” mindset to redefining retirement and improving our retirement intelligence.

Robert is the founder of RetirementProject.org and Naked Retirement. As the Retirement Activist, Robert is committed to changing the way people think about and prepare for every aspect of retirement. In his nationally syndicated columns at Forbes and Financial Advisor, he challenges the status quo of traditional retirement planning. His tremendous work also frequently appears in the Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Investor’s Business Daily, The Street, and many other publications.

In this episode, we dig into Robert’s Retirement Quotient (RQ) test and what he’s learned throughout his career, studying why some people succeed and some fail in retirement from an individual–not a financial–perspective.

You’ll also learn why so many people underestimate just how intense retirement can be, why retirement is all about envisioning the life you want, and removing the negative stigma that the idea of retirement means happiness is over or that you’re put out to pasture.

GET A FREE ACCESS TO ROBERT’S RQ TEST AND JOIN A GREAT DISCUSSION.

Here's all you have to do...

Step 1.) Subscribe to the podcast and leave an honest rating & review over on iTunes.
Step 2.) Send an email with your username to info@howardbailey.com, and we’ll provide that to you free of charge!

In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:

  • How to use the RQ test to assess your retirement readiness.
  • Why so many retirees suffer in silence despite being financially stable.
  • Why the “honeymoon phase” of retirement can be such a dangerous time.
  • How to create a retirement plan when you don’t really want to retire.
  • How retirement reorients work, helps us find new communities, and forge new connections in the outside world.

343: The Evolution of Money Management with Wall Street Legend, Burton Malkiel30 Jan 202301:09:56

Today, I'm thrilled to be speaking with Burt Malkiel. You probably know him as the author of A Random Walk Down Wall Street, originally published 50 years ago and is now in its 13th edition. In the book, he made a compelling case to make index funds the core component of one's investment portfolio. Keep in mind that index funds weren’t publicly available at that time.

Having written one of the most influential books in the history of investing is an extraordinary achievement. And Burt's accomplishments are many, including several lifetime achievement awards from professional investment organizations.

Burt is the Chemical Bank Chairman's Professor of Economics at Princeton University. He has also served as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers, president of the American Finance Association, the dean of the Yale School of Management, and spent 28 years as a director at the Vanguard Group.

331: How Demographic Changes Are Impacting the Future for Retirees with Bradley Schurman28 Nov 202201:02:07

Today, I’m talking to Bradley Schurman. Bradley is the founder and CEO of The Super Age, a global strategic advisory firm that helps people tap into the economic power of “super-agers”–the older populations that will soon outnumber younger people in economies worldwide.

In his book The Super Age: Decoding Our Demographic Destiny, he explores how these changing demographics will affect government and business, touching all of our lives. He warns us that our failure to prepare for an aging world could lead to economic stagnation, more isolated populations, and accelerated decline. He also outlines how we can harness this generation’s skills and talents to enrich everyone’s lives for years to come.

In our conversation, we discuss why he believes the Super Age presents an extraordinary challenge and opportunity for our world–and how this impacts our notion of “retirement.”

We discuss how the Super Age will change our world for at least the next 25 years, the links between aging and inflation, and the private-sector innovation and public-sector adjustments that will define this transition for so many of us in the years to come.

In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:

  • How Super Age nations are guaranteed to create massive socioeconomic change all over the world.
  • Why our definition of retirement is currently changing in real-time.
  • What makes someone a Super Ager–and how these traits keep older people healthier, more active, and better-connected.
  • How changes to our economy are creating communities that look more like the families of the early 20th century.
  • What Bradley expects to see happen to Medicare and Social Security to address these demographic changes.
  • The factors that define our longevity–and what people are looking for as they seek out stability in this highly disruptive period.

321: How The RISA® Profile Tool is a Gamechanger for Retirement Income Planning with Alex Murguia10 Oct 202201:10:04

Today, I’m speaking with Alex Murguia. Alex has worked to turn Dr. Wade Pfau’s framework for retirement income planning into a quantifiable retirement income model, and the Retirement Income Style Awareness (RISA) Profile is the result of his hard work.

Before creating the RISA® Profile, Alex graduated from George Washington University with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology and served as a research fellow for the National Institute of Health before pursuing a formal career in finance. He joined McLean Asset Management as a scientist-practitioner and launched a financial planning software company, but soon found himself disillusioned by the lack of tools individuals could use to chart a course to a successful retirement, leading him to where he is now.

In today’s episode, you’ll find out how the RISA® Profile can help answer some of your most pressing questions when it comes to retirement, why we’re biologically incapable of making sound financial decisions without a process in place, and why financial planning and retirement planning are not one and the same.

In this podcast interview, you’ll learn:

  • The common questions from many retirees that inspired Alex, Dr. Wade Pfau, and Bob French to create the RISA® Profile.
  • How to confidently do your own research when it comes to investing and retirement planning.
  • How strategic planning helps protect you from biased and irrational decisions.
  • When (and how) to assess your financial plan and asset allocation.
  • Alex’s response to one of our Weekend Reading subscribers looking for guidance as a conservative investor.
