Healing & Prayer12 Nov 202500:47:02

This week, Jake and Bob explore how inner healing is rooted within the tradition of the Catholic Church. Drawing from the Catechism, they discuss the three expressions of prayer—vocal, meditative, and contemplative—and how each form is incorporated within the inner healing process. Far from being a psychological exercise, inner healing comes from a deeply relational encounter with Jesus and restores the whole person so we might live in deeper communion with Him.

Key Points:

  • Inner healing prayer is deeply rooted in the Church's tradition
  • The Catechism identifies three key expressions of prayer: vocal, meditation, and contemplative. These are all at the heart of the inner healing process
  • Healing comes from an encounter with Jesus and is not a result of a mere completion of steps
  • When we pray, we need to engage our hearts instead of simply repeating words
  • God is always present when we pray, even when we cannot hear His voice
  • Inner healing often requires us to patiently cooperate with God's timing. He knows more about the mysteries and vulnerabilities of our hearts than we do

Desire (Part 2) w/ Dr. Shane Owens29 Oct 202501:03:18

This week, Jake and Bob welcome Dr. Shane Owens to explore how desire, the heart, and theology work together for our good, through the lens of St. Augustine's Confessions. Dr. Owens breaks down St. Augustine's healing journey and how by understanding the desires motivating our actions, we are led into deeper communion with God. They also discuss how memories shape our view of reality, why we distrust a good God, and what the Scriptures teach us about our identity.

Key Points:

  • Our desires ultimately point us towards God
  • Sin is a result of misdirecting our desires towards something that is not God. It is an attempt to counterfeit the beautiful
  • Memory is dynamic, not static, and returning to our heart to examine our memories plays an important role in forming our identity and facilitating healing.
  • St. Augustine's willingness to be vulnerable in his "Confessions" is a model for vulnerability and understanding our desires.
  • Scripture helps us recognize true beauty and reveals our true identity
  • There will always be a tension between our desires and satisfying those desires. Healing and maturation occurs when we listen to our desires but wait for true fulfillment in God rather than settling for counterfeits.

Healing, Discipleship and the Heart w/ John Eldredge25 Jun 202500:54:56

This week, Jake and Bob are joined by John Eldredge, president of Wild at Heart, to discuss what authentic discipleship looks like in a distracted digital age. They explore the subtle ways constant connectivity and information overload can erode our spiritual focus, hinder intimacy with God, and ultimately fragment our souls. John also shares stories and insights from his own journey, highlights how unchecked busyness can mask deeper wounds or spiritual emptiness, and encourages listeners, with practical advice, to seek genuine communion with Jesus for true restoration.

Key Points:

  • A true disciple is someone who has fallen in love with Jesus. This love sustains their commitment to following His commands
  • The internet conditions people against intimacy with God. While the internet is not always be, it is important to recognize its impact on your spiritual life
  • Intimacy with God requires intentionality and focus, especially when it comes to our phones and computers
  • Mystery and wonder have been twisted into something negative. In reality, mystery and wonder are a beautiful part of spiritual life
  • Jesus actively seeks to heal each fragmented part of yourself and continually invites you deeper into relationship with Him

Sexual Healing (Part 6) with Christopher West10 Nov 202100:52:11

This week, Jake and Bob spend time with an old friend, Christopher West. They reminisce about their spiritual history with each other, and Christopher gets real about his own journey of healing from rejection wounds. Christopher is well known as 'the Theology of the Body guy,' but after nine years of hiding his own brokenness behind masks in his marriage, he was confronted with the reality that he was living out his brokenness with his wife. Christopher walks us through his testimony of learning to take off the masks to let God love him.

Guiding Quote:

"For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power." - 1 Cor 1:17

Key points:

  • Christopher, Jake and Bob talk about their friendship and how they first met
  • How Christopher's wounds of rejection created a blindspot that prevented him from loving his wife well in their first decade of marriage
  • How wounds of rejection can affect identity
  • We have to go into our family history to understanding our wounds
  • The 'archaeological dig' into our own wounds must be done with Christ
  • Our wounds play out in the marriage bed
  • We can show up as we are because we're loved by God

Practical Application:

  1. What is your spiritual legacy? Who has shared the faith with you and is your spiritual father or grandfather?
  2. Where have you experienced rejection wounds? Pray over those areas to ask God to heal those wounds.
  3. Reflect on how God has worked in your history to bring you to where you are today.

Healing from Abuse within the Church w/ Teresa Pitt Green28 May 202500:57:31

This week, Jake and Bob are joined by Teresa Pitt Green, co-founder of Spirit Fire, a ministry dedicated to "facilitating healing dialogue among those wounded by abuse in the Roman Catholic Church." Teresa shares her own story of healing from abuse, the challenges she experienced, and what she learned along the way. She also shares practical advice to help priests approach conversations with survivors, common mistakes to avoid, and insights into the complexity of what it's like to heal from abuse. Ultimately, it is Jesus who heals, and He can use whatever we have to offer to bring about restoration in the Church and her members.

If you are experiencing or have experienced abuse of any kind, we encourage you to reach out to Teresa or check out her resources on Spirit Fire's website.

Key Points:

  • Navigating conversations with survivors of abuse requires sensitivity and receptivity
  • For many survivors of clergy abuse, there is little distinction between priests and abusers
  • Healing from abuse is an ongoing journey, it isn't something someone can just "get over"
  • If someone approaches you about abuse, be careful to listen and not judge their experiences
  • Even if we make a mistake in our approach to a conversation, God can still work through that moment. He is the one who is ultimately doing the healing work
  • The journey of healing is complex and nonlinear

This week's episode goes deeper into the life of St. Peter. Through personal stories and experiences, Bob and Jake help us appreciate the value of seeing ourselves as we truly are because in vulnerability, as we carry the cross, our hearts move deeper through the journey of healing. Our search for identity and validation is most perfectly rooted in our relationship with Him.

The Life of Peter: Part 2 (Beyond Control)09 Dec 202000:38:18

Bob and Jake continue the series on healing as seen through the life of St. Peter. In the healing process, we can be focused on a dynamic that is important but not as deep or far reaching as what Jesus is addressing. Vows can significantly affect the way we do life and can go unnoticed since we often perceive them as normal and necessary.

Anatomy of a Wound: Part 428 Oct 202000:43:51

Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss judgements which are a type of belief that distort our perceptions of others and become a barrier to love.

Anatomy of a Wound: Part 314 Oct 202000:45:12

Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss beliefs. Our lives are filled with experiences and we interpret these experiences and put meaning to them. We then agree with the beliefs that are either truths or lies.

Anatomy of a Wound: Part 230 Sep 202000:39:58

Bob and Jake continue the series on the anatomy of a wound and discuss Type A and Type B wounds as well as seven categories of woundedness called the seven deadly wounds.

Our healing journey requires us to bring the depths of our shame into the light and love of God so we can live our lives to the full.

It's important that we are aware of where we are bringing the deep questions of our hearts because if we lose God's identity, we lose our identity.

Theology of the Body & Healing: Part 1 (Introduction)13 May 202000:35:49

Bob and Jake start a series on the Theology of the Body (TOB) by sharing stories of how the TOB has brought healing into people's lives. They discuss various aspects that are essential to the healing process and ground TOB as an essential background for healing.

Healing Within a Parish Community30 Apr 202500:58:56

This week, Jake and Bob share ideas on how to foster a healthy parish community. They not only reflect on the challenges of developing true community within a parish but also ponder how healthy parish life revolves around our personal healing and freedom. Through the use of multiple personal examples, Jake and Bob also explore the importance of the Sacraments, the role of forgiveness, and how love and fear bonds affect our relationships with God and those around us.

Key Points:

  • Building community in small groups and then coming together for Mass on Sunday is one way to begin fostering community
  • The Pastor of a parish has the important role of spiritual father and can foster community and connection by his example
  • Many people may feel unsafe to build community in their parishes due to past wounds and judgements
  • Fear and love bonds not only affect our relationships with others but also with God
  • Fear bonds are formed from wounds and can lead to anxiety or avoidance in relationships
  • Love bonds are built on trust and intimacy
