| Ep 65 - Wendy Pratt - Author of The Ghost Lake talks about writing, infertility and bereavement | 04 Oct 2024 | 01:09:55 | |
Wendy Pratt is a poet, creative non fiction author and editor living on the North Yorkshire coast. In this episode we talk about navigating the loss of her daughter, infertility, the sense of not belonging, nature and her journey as a working class writer. Her non fiction nature/landscape memoir The Ghost Lake, was long listed for the Nan Shepherd prize in 2021. The Ghost Lake is inspired by paleolake Flixton, an extinct lake in North Yorkshire. In the book Wendy brings the reader on a pilgrimage around the ghost lake, to locations that have acted as journey markers in her own life. While traversing forests and fenland, she reflects on the process of finding belonging in nature as a woman who exists in a series of liminal spaces – as a working-class writer, an infertile woman in a fertile world and a bereaved mother in a society focused on children. | Ep 64 - Andy Brown - How resilience is the currency in our Emotional Overdraft | 30 Aug 2024 | 01:26:35
Do one day you feel like you are on top of the world, and yet one day feel overwhelmed by life and everything you are expected to deal with? Did you know that this when you are overdrawn in your emotional overdraft? Andy Brown - the author of Amazon Number one bestseller, "The Emotional Overdraft: 10 simple changes for balancing business success and wellbeing” explains all on this not-to-miss episode. We talk about: What your emotional overdraft is and how it can deplete your resilience Guilt as an impact on resilience Change your resilience by changing habits - but don't worry, there are no 5am gym and journalling sessions here How we can measure and spot habits in our emotional spending... Why the Lone Ranger needed to delegate and sort out those systems.. Andy is also a podcast host, leadership coach and award-winning advisor with over 30 years’ experience. Andy wrote his book after hundreds of conversations with leaders, entrepreneurs and founders – all of which pointed to the fact that every single one of them was – to some extent or another - subsidising their success at the cost of their own physical or mental wellbeing, what he calls their ‘emotional overdraft’. Andy believes the currency of an emotional overdraft is resilience. The longer and deeper you are overdrawn, the less resilient you become, which leads to stress, overwhelm and burnout. | Ep 44 - Imogen Furlong - Caving Expedition Leader | 22 Dec 2023 | 01:05:42
Imogen Furlong, Imo, has an impressive track record as a cave expedition leader. Imo broke ground leading the first expeditions to the Shan plateau in Myanmar. She's also explored the deepest cave in China, was the first to complete the deepest cave traverse in Mexico, and was part of the team who connected and surveyed the longest cave in India. Her recent cave projects have been to integrate families with young children into expeditions and develop a family expedition methodology. I sit down to ask her what caving has taught her about resilience, how the death of her mother when she was 18 years old affected her life, and why she is working on 'food resilience' from her Scottish home. “Caving and exploration has been a big part of my life, but it was the bereavement, through losing my mum at 18, that opened that pathway up to cave exploration in the first place. It shaped my life considerably, and accepting death is inevitable is key to everything thereafter.” --- If you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including behind the scenes of the podcast, please consider subscribing to the Substack page - Find out more at https://jenscotney1.substack.com Resilience Rising Podcast is hosted by Jen Scotney @jenscotney Find us at: Instagram: @resiliencerisingpodcast Website: www.jenscotney.com Twitter: @ResilienceRPod Facebook: Resilience Rising Podcast Email: theresiliencerisingpodcast@gmail.com

It's about accepting what has happened and allowing it to become part of who I am, without it defining who I am, leaving me frozen in time.’ Joe French - Out of Mind Joe French is a Film maker, Climber, Musician, Barefoot runner, and author. Combining his love of climbing, mountains and storytelling, Joe taught himself to become a climbing cameraman and started making films on the cliffs of Ben Nevis and beyond. This started a successful career in TV and Joe was soon working as a self-shooting Producer/Director on high profile productions, including recreating Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic journey of survival in Antarctica. But Joe has experienced a great deal of trauma and tragedy whilst filming in the mountains. He has been lucky to survive on several occasions. In 2015, he was about to fulfil a dream of a lifetime – to climb Everest and film it, when tragedy struck and Joe found himself at the epicentre of an earthquake which killed nearly 9,000 people. Only a few years previously, his team of Sherpas had been killed in another avalanche, and soon after that, Julie, his wife, was diagnosed with cancer. His experience of Post-Traumatic Stress and the subsequent journeys of healing is the subject of his book Out of Mind, which is out now via Sandstone Press/Vertebrate Publishing. --- If you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including behind the scenes of the podcast, please consider subscribing to the Substack page - Find out more at https://jenscotney1.substack.com Resilience Rising Podcast is hosted by Jen Scotney @jenscotney Find us at: Instagram: @resiliencerisingpodcast Website: www.jenscotney.com Twitter: @ResilienceRPod Facebook: Resilience Rising Podcast Email: theresiliencerisingpodcast@gmail.com

| Ep 33 - Lizzie Pickering - Grief and Resilience | 29 Sep 2023 | 01:24:02 | |
How do we live with grief? Lizzie Pickering offers grief guidance and is a speaker, podcaster, author and film maker. Her book 'When Grief Equals Love' is out now. She offers guidance to private individuals and companies on the effects of grief, whether through bereavement, divorce, diagnosis or workplace change. She has 23 years of experience investigating responses to shock, trauma and grief, through her films, podcasts, and the years she spent as a carer to her terminally ill, eldest child, Harry. Subsequently through 12 years working at the children’s hospice where Harry died, she worked closely with the bereavement team on peer-to-peer support and had the privilege of hearing the stories of many bereaved parents and siblings. When Harry died in 2000, she set out on a journey to understand how she could survive her grief and learn to live with it. In her book, out now, When Grief Equals Love, she details the lessons she’s learned from her own experiences and those of others, who share their thoughts in this moving and powerful book. Lizzie opens her diaries, written in the early years after Harry’s death, revealing her observations on the grief of his siblings and family, what helped and what hurt. Revisiting those diaries, she reflects on time passing, and what has changed for her and her family since. Lizzie looks at the myth of closure, survivor’s energy and cumulative grief – when life experiences pile up and become too much to bear. In the book, she writes ‘it took a long time and much investigation into how to survive my own grief, and that is work in progress, but I hope that some of what I have learned so far might resonate’. --- You can find out more about Lizzie Pickering and her work Website: https://lizziepickering.com Instagram: @lizzie.pickering Twitter: @PickeringLizzie Buy her Book: When Grief Equals Love --- Resilience Rising Podcast is hosted by Jen Scotney @jenscotney Find us at: Substack: @jenscotney1 Instagram: @resiliencerisingpodcast Website: www.jenscotney.com Twitter: @ResilienceRPod Facebook: Resilience Rising Podcast

| Ep 27 - Victoria Bennet - Writer and Chronically Ill Carer | 11 Aug 2023 | 01:14:34 | |
"Stone by stone, seed by seed, they discover that sometimes life grows, not in spite of what is broken, but because of it." on All My Wild Mothers by Victoria Bennett On 19 October 2007, Victoria Bennett was looking forward to new motherhood. At seven months pregnant, she was excited about what was to come. But when the telephone rang, the news she received changed everything. Her eldest sister had died in a canoeing accident. Five years later, struggling with grief, the demands of being a parent-carer for her young son, and the impact of deeper austerity, life feels very different to the future she had imagined. A move to a new social housing estate in rural Cumbria offers Victoria and her family a chance to rebuild their lives. Constructed over an industrial site, at first the barren ground seems an unlikely place to sow the seeds of a new life. She and her son set about transforming the rubble around them into a wild apothecary garden. Daisy, for resilience. Dandelion, for strength against adversity. Red campion, to ward off loneliness. Sow thistle, to lift melancholy. Borage, to bring hope in dark and difficult times. Stone by stone, seed by seed, they discover that sometimes life grows, not in spite of what is broken, but because of it. Victoria Bennett is a poet and author, her writing has previously received a Northern Debut Award, a Northern Promise Award, the Andrew Waterhouse Award, and has been longlisted for the Penguin WriteNow programme and the inaugural Nan Shepherd Prize for under-represented voices. She founded Wild Women Press in 1999 to support rural women writers in her community, and since 2018 has curated the global Wild Woman Web project, an inclusive online space focusing on nature, connection, and creativity. When not juggling writing, full-time care, and genetic illness, she can be found where the wild weeds grow. | Ep 17 - Resilience Rising Podcast - Becca Harvey - Cold Water Swimmer | 26 May 2023 | 01:07:11
Can choosing to put ourselves in hard situations, such as getting in cold water, prepare us for the hard uncomfortable situations in life? Becca Harvey believes so. Becca is an outdoor swim guide based in the North East. She started swimming outdoors one January when she saw a documentary on people using cold water to treat depression. At the time she was dealing with complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and had not found any conventional treatments effective for her. She was desperate to try anything. Getting into the cold water was one thing that helped her, and both changed and saved her life. Becca features in the film, The Ice Mile, which is recently available to purchase on Vimeo here, with a portion of the proceeds going towards the charity Beach Access North East. The film, directed and shot by filmmaker Rachel Sarah, follows Becca’s journey as she trains for her Ice Mile. An Ice Mile is a challenge to swim a mile in water 5 degrees or cooler, with just a swimsuit, hat and googles. It’s something only a few hundred people have ever done. Even fewer people have joined Becca in completing an extreme ice mile, which means being in the water longer than 45 minutes to complete the swim. The film is beautifully shot, and tells the journey of training and completing such an extreme event as well as touching on some of the difficulties Becca has faced in her life. | Ep 13 - Resilience Rising Podcast - Tess Elias | 28 Apr 2023 | 01:00:14
What can we learn about resilience from humans displaced in refugee camps? How do humanitarian aid workers cope with their work? What is resilience programming for communities and does it work? These are all questions I ask Tess Elias on this episode. Tess spent the best part of a decade working in humanitarian emergency responses, both in refugee settings and in conflict situations, ranging from Afghanistan to Tanzania to Bangladesh. She started out working in medical logistics, and eventually moved into general management for international charities. She also worked for the EU for a year, but realised that even when working for an organisation that controls the purse strings, the system designed to help people in crisis is fundamentally flawed, and there just wasn’t the scope to do what was needed. So she moved back home to the UK, started to deal with the burnout she’d experienced, and now lives in North Wales with her dog, working part time consulting for various humanitarian NGOs, running a lot of mountain miles, and trying to figure out how to spend more time outdoors and less in front of a computer. --- You can find out more about Tess Elias Instagram: @tessoutdoors_ --- Resilience Rising Podcast is hosted by Jen Scotney @jenscotney Find us at: Instagram: @resiliencerisingpodcast Twitter: @ResilienceRPod Facebook: Resilience Rising Podcast Email: theresiliencerisingpodcast@gmail.com
