Rereading the Revolution
Kellie and Daphne
Frequency: 1 episode/10d. Total Eps: 48

Whether it was a reaction to the politics of the time or the rapidly approaching end date of the Mayan calendar, the pop-cultural landscape of the early 2010s can be best remembered for one thing: dystopian literature. Join plucky young heroines and podcast hosts Daphne and Kellie as they dive into all of your favorite young adult novels and series from this era as we reread the revolution. We lived through it once and are back to recap, review, and discuss all the best and worst that the world-shifting genre of YA fiction has to offer–the sci-fi, the fantasy, and the supernatural–at least until our society crumbles and we have to survive a brave new world.

"There’s a lot of walking through the desert."
Our patron-voted sequel episode for March is the sequel to The Maze Runner, James Dashner’s The Scorch Trials (2010). There are so many events in this book and yet...nothing really happens?

"They said, 'North Carolina? Eww.'"
In this month's bonus episode, we discuss the 2019 Netflix adaptation of Let It Snow, which is very different from the book. The cast list is studded with medium-sized young stars, the jokes are largely misses, and the holiday pageant centerpiece is absolutely not talked about enough. Happy holidays!

"We Need to Talk About Shrek" | Let It Snow
vendredi 6 décembre 2024 • Duration 01:00:10
"...Just so you know what level of quirky we're operating at."
Happy holidays! We're celebrating the season by reading Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle's 2008 short story collection, Let It Snow: Three Holiday Romances, and trying not to be too grinchy about it. Topics covered span from the Netflix Christmas Universe and Piggy Smalls to an impassioned discussion about a story's gross mischaracterization of Shrek. In addition, we continue spreading the good word of Waffle House and listen to one of the most inspired musical performances of all time.

vendredi 22 novembre 2024 • Duration 01:24:03
"Food, water, shelter, and tampons."
This week, Kellie and Daphne cover another YA dystopian staple: Rick Yancey's post-alien invasion novel The 5th Wave (2013). It's a supersized episode because we're rejoined by special guest and professional yapper Colin! We discuss aliens, hacking the mainframe, Gen Alpha slang, and blond adults, among many, many other topics.

"The props department was bedazzling those backstage."
Kellie, Daphne, and resident Selection expert Katie reunite to discuss BOTH unaired Selection pilots for CW. Between the uninspired 2012 pilot and truly incredible 2013 second attempt, they cover the full entertainment spectrum in just an hour. It's like the opposite of "How Did This Get Made?" where we uncover just why The Selection show never did.

"A Weird Choice" | Fangirl
vendredi 8 novembre 2024 • Duration 47:37
“Why was that a detail?"
We’ve read a few contemporary books on this show, but none that made us self-reflect on the nature of hosting a fan podcast and experiencing the other side of fandom through our relationships with our listeners as much as Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl (2013).
Just kidding. This book is crazy! Daphne and Kellie recap the college coming-of-age story and talk fanfic, young love, and one major historic event in particular in this episode.

"Aura of Creepiness" | Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
vendredi 25 octobre 2024 • Duration 57:15
“This book is basically Citizen Kane.”
Happy Halloween! We read Ransom Riggs’ fantastical 2013 novel/found photography collection, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, to celebrate. It’s not nearly as haunting as we remember—at least, not in terms of ghosts and ghouls. Plus, Kellie finally finished the Delirium series! Stick around until the end to hear her recap the final book of the trilogy, Requiem, for Daphne.

"Dominating the Post-Apocalyptic Walmart" | The Darkest Minds
vendredi 11 octobre 2024 • Duration 01:11:46
“You just wake up one day and you’re really good at math, and suddenly you’re being taken from your home.”
We're back with another dystopian novel and this one is...actually good? Our hosts are rejoined by special guest Katie to discuss Alexandra Bracken’s The Darkest Minds (2012). As we hit the road with Ruby and company, Daphne and Katie tell Kellie about the series, Katie and Kellie teach Daphne more Southern cultural nuances, and everyone in the room, including the cat, gets really excited about Harris Dickinson. Thanks for coming along with us on the ride, darlin'.

"Manic Pixie Dream Parents" | If I Stay
vendredi 27 septembre 2024 • Duration 47:55
"Collapsed lung, ruptured spleen, internal bleeding, brain contusions, broken ribs, and leg and face abrasions requiring skin grafts."
Kellie and Daphne deviate from their usual fare this week to discuss Gayle Forman's acclaimed novel, If I Stay (2009), a book that caused us physical reactions from heaving sobs to incapacitating laughter. Despite the somber subject matter, we still manage to have fun discussing punk rock, Yo-Yo Ma, Oregon culture, ghost rules, and more.
