Camille is applying the Launch It Lean Process to create the Remote, Not Retired Club, a more affordable, community-focused alternative to Remote Work School. The Club will provide core resources, tools, and templates, with optional a la carte offerings like resume reviews, LinkedIn support, or business plan help.

The first participants will be a beta group of 20–40 founding members, helping shape the Club, give feedback, and influence its evolution. These early members will receive extra support at a lower cost while testing and refining the program.

Listeners can join the Interested List via the link in the show notes. Being on the list does not obligate anyone to join but guarantees first priority when the Club opens.

Proposed Pricing:

  • Trial run: two- to three-month experience for around $97
  • Ongoing membership: approximately $47 per month, cancel anytime

These rates are designed to cover costs, launch the program, and gather feedback, all while making the Club accessible to those who want to participate without committing to the full Remote Work School program.

5 Traits To Be A Successful Remote Worker Over 5022 Oct 202500:29:24

In this episode, Camille shares the five traits that most predict success in remote work or running an online business. Drawing from a decade of coaching thousands of people, she explains how to thrive in digital environments, adapt to change, and build momentum—especially if you’re 50+.

Episode Highlights:

  • Digital adaptability The win is flexibility with constant platform changes and AI updates, not mastery of one tool. You do NOT need to be tech savvy!
  • Growth mindset + curiosity. Replace stagnation with experimentation, self-teaching, and community-based learning.
  • Excitement and engagement. Contribute to virtual culture on Zoom, Slack, and PM tools; engage at a sustainable cadence.
  • Patience. Expect outages, updates, and friction; use AI to troubleshoot and keep moving.
  • Positive self-talk. Track your internal dialogue and challenge “I can’t” narratives with evidence and reframing.

Key Takeaways:

  • Success online is driven by traits, not credentials. Skills can be learned fast once mindset is aligned.
  • Engage in digital culture to be seen, supported, and accelerated.
  • Use AI as your first-line helper for roadblocks and learning paths.
  • Hiring managers and clients notice these traits across your resume, LinkedIn, and interviews.

Stop Sabotaging Your Transition to Remote Work29 Apr 202500:34:30

In this episode, Camille explores how self-sabotage can hinder mid-career professionals transitioning to remote work. Through the stories of Carol and Thomas, she illustrates how reframing personal challenges and adjusting mindsets can lead to successful career shifts into the remote work landscape. The following highlights are from conversations in a coaching circle as part of Camille's online coaching program, Remote Work School.

Key Points:

  • Carol's Transition to Freelance Bookkeeping: Carol, a former nurse, seeks flexibility and autonomy through remote work. Despite health challenges, she repositions her experiences as strengths, offering empathetic and resilient bookkeeping services.
  • Thomas's Career Shift Strategy: Thomas, with a sales background, feels overwhelmed by the idea of a complete career pivot. By identifying transferable skills and focusing on incremental changes, he navigates a smoother transition into remote roles.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Recognize patterns of self-sabotage to initiate change.
  2. Reframe personal challenges as unique professional strengths.
  3. Use empowering language to describe career transitions.
  4. Implement small, manageable steps towards career change.
  5. Leverage existing skills to facilitate remote work transitions.

Mental Muscles You Need to Build to Be a Remote Worker23 Apr 202500:34:06

Our topic needs more focus in remote work: Mental Muscles. No fluffy mindset tips: real tools to help face fear, overwhelm & frustration. New or seasoned these muscles are key to success.

Frustration:  Inevitable but Not an Enemy:
Keep it real: frustration is part of anything new including remote work. Learn to move through it faster by strengthening your inner skills.

Acceptance: A Power Tool:
Acceptance is not giving up it's seeing things as they are not how you wish they were. A shift lowers stress chemicals like cortisol & adrenaline easing mental strain & overwhelm.

You Can Rewire Your Brain:
Simple practices: breaks, meditation, journaling, short walks can reset your brain chemistry. Not indulgences but strategies.

Avoid the “Expert Trap”:
Thinking you should already know something blocks learning. Even seasoned remote workers need a beginner mindset. It takes practice to grow.

Be Resourceful, Not Dependent:
Camille reflects on how she used to always ask for help but that didn’t build her skills. Remote work demands self-reliance. Be your own tech support, researcher & motivator.

Stop Expecting Instant Help:
Unlike in an office help isn’t always nearby. Even in support systems like Remote Work School independence matters. Answers don’t grow your skills problem-solving does.

Ask Yourself One Powerful Question:
Stuck? Ask: “What is my next step to become more ________?”
Fill in the blank—more patient, focused, less stressed. Let your inner wisdom guide you.

5 Key Takeaways

Patience & Grace Are Foundational
New challenges will come. Meeting them with patience & grace eases stress & keeps you moving.

Acceptance Lowers Frustration
When you stop resisting reality you create space to think clearly & act calmly.

Beginner Mindset Opens Doors
Forget needing to know everything. Curiosity helps you learn faster & adapt more easily.

Resourcefulness Is Non-Negotiable
No coworker nearby? No problem. Learn to search, experiment & use your community wisely.

Ask Better Questions, Get Better Results
Don’t stay stuck ask: “What’s my next step to become more calm, clear, focused, etc.?” Then trust the answer.

This episode reminds us that remote work success isn’t just tactical it’s internal. Camille offers strong insights & tools to help you build the mental strength needed to thrive.

Tariffs, Stocks, and Jobs: My Take on How You May be Affected08 Apr 202500:35:20

Today’s episode explores recent developments in tariffs, stock market reactions, and employment implications, especially for retirees and older workers navigating remote work. Though not a policy expert, Camille interprets complex issues for an audience often overlooked—those approaching or in retirement, many of whom rely on market outcomes and job stability.

Tariffs aim to correct trade imbalances and revive U.S. manufacturing, but the reality is more complicated. While benefits like job creation and reduced import reliance are possible, products like the Ford F-150 show the global nature of modern manufacturing. Rebuilding domestic supply chains is a long-term challenge that tariffs alone can’t solve.

Higher tariffs may increase consumer prices and harm small businesses, as costs are passed on to consumers. Camille shares an example of a small shoe company struggling due to rising import costs.

Market volatility tied to tariffs adds uncertainty, especially for retirees concerned about shrinking portfolios. While tariffs are marketed as job creators, they could backfire by increasing automation instead.

Camille emphasizes awareness and encourages focusing on what’s controllable, like upskilling or exploring freelance opportunities, such as those featured in the Freelance After 50 Summit. She hopes for productive trade negotiations but cautions against oversimplified solutions. Broad tariffs could result in self-inflicted damage, so staying alert and prepared is crucial.

5 Key Takeaways:

  1. Tariffs may raise prices and hurt small businesses more than they help the broader economy.
  2. Stock market volatility following trade announcements affects retirees and those nearing retirement the most.
  3. Rebuilding U.S. manufacturing is a complex, long-term goal that tariffs alone can't accomplish.
  4. Automation is likely to replace jobs, even if production returns to the U.S.
  5. Staying informed and adaptable—through skills-building and remote work—is crucial in uncertain economic times.

Five Ways to Increase Remote Work Opportunities This Year25 Mar 202500:37:10

This episode focuses on increasing remote work opportunities despite headlines suggesting a decline. Some companies are recalling employees to the office, while others have maintained or expanded remote work options, including hybrid models.

Camille emphasizes that despite job market shifts, you can take proactive steps to create or find remote work opportunities instead of waiting for the market to dictate your options.

She builds on the topics of her two previous episodes: the February jobs report and potential recession.

She highlights that, as with any economic shift some opportunities will close while others open. The key is to position yourself strategically to take advantage of these changes rather than just waiting to see what happens.

The five main strategies Camille discusses include leveraging existing experience, embracing technology, using specialized job boards, networking strategically, and considering contract, part-time, or freelance work. These approaches will help you stay competitive in the evolving remote work landscape.

First, leveraging past experience allows you to highlight transferable skills relevant to remote work.

Second, by embracing technology, including AI tools, you can streamline job searches and increase efficiency in work processes. Third, specialized job boards help you target remote job opportunities and freelance roles.

Fourth, networking is key when seeking remote jobs. Camille encourages relationship-building to help you access hidden job markets and potential client work.

Finally she suggests considering alternative work arrangements—contract, part-time, or freelance positions—which can provide flexibility and open doors to long-term remote opportunities.

In summary the episode encourages you to be proactive in adapting to workforce changes rather than feeling discouraged by negative headlines. By implementing these strategies, you can increase your chances of securing remote work in 2025.

Key Takeaways:

  • Leverage Existing Experience – Highlight transferable skills relevant to remote work
  • Embrace Technology – Use AI tools and learn new digital skills to stay competitive
  • Utilize Specialized Job Boards – Target platforms that cater to remote jobs and freelancing
  • Network Strategically – Build meaningful professional connections to access hidden opportunities
  • Consider Alternative Work Arrangements – Explore contract, part-time, or freelance work for flexibility

Tips to Protect Your Career and Income During a Recession18 Mar 202500:33:16

This episode questions whether you can fully "recession-proof" yourself. While total protection is unrealistic, steps can help safeguard income and career stability. A recession is usually defined as two consecutive quarters of economic decline, but with mixed indicators, awareness is more important than panic.

Camille suggests proactive financial planning, like building an emergency fund, cutting expenses, and seeking financial advice. Instead of reacting to fear-driven headlines, she encourages small, practical steps to strengthen finances.

This may be a good time to invest in the stock market as prices fluctuate. While she recommends professional guidance, stocks or mutual funds may be more affordable now, making investments more accessible.

Beyond investing, Camille suggests diversifying income. Rather than relying solely on a job, explore freelance work, a side business, or contract work. Balancing employment with independent work creates flexibility, helping you pivot as needed.

One of the best ways to recession-proof is skill-building. Enhancing skills, particularly in AI or digital tools, boosts employability and future-proofs careers. Diversifying experience by exploring adjacent roles creates new opportunities. A strong professional network, especially on LinkedIn, can open doors to jobs and clients. Strong job performance is key, as positive reviews and recommendations are valuable.

Lastly, developing a personal brand builds credibility and visibility, positioning you for long-term success.

Key Takeaways:

  • Consider Market Opportunities – Stocks and mutual funds may be available at lower prices, but it is recommended to consider seeking professional financial advice.
  • Diversify Income Sources – Freelance work or side businesses can help to provide stability alongside current employment.
  • Enhance Skills & Adapt – Learning new, in-demand skills such as AI and digital tools, can help increase job security and earning potential.
  • Expand Professional Networks – Connecting with professionals within your industry can help lead to new opportunities.
  • Maintain Strong Performance & Branding – Consistently delivering quality work and building a personal brand can help in providing career security.

What Can Job Seekers Learn from the Recent Job Market Report? 12 Mar 202500:20:33

Drawing on a metaphor between almost walking into a wasp swarm, and the unpredictable economic climate, Camille encourages her listeners not to panic but be aware of market shifts. She emphasizes the importance of being open to and adapting to change by finding alternative paths. Even though the February jobs report shows some increase in unemployment and slight decrease in job growth, these shifts are not cause for alarm and should be used as opportunities to prepare.

The episode explores the evolving landscape of remote and hybrid work. While hybrid models are gaining strength, fully remote work is becoming a little more challenging to find. However, with the demand for skilled remote workers persisting, companies are continuing to hire workers who are adaptable to remote setups. Camille advises being strategic in job searching and the use of specialized job boards. Expanding their networking efforts will help to stay competitive in this increasingly complex market.

Finally, Camille offers actionable steps to help prepare for potential changes, such as filling experience gaps, embracing new technologies like AI, and exploring contract, freelance, or part-time work. Staying proactive, even when feeling secure in current roles, and taking small, strategic actions now can help provide a clear path through the uncertainty ahead.

Key Takeaways:

  • Adopt a proactive mindset in uncertain times
  • Leverage your remote work experience:
  • Prepare for economic shifts
  • Fill experience gaps and grow professionally
  • Use AI tools to enhance your job search

Will the Government's Return to Office Policy Bring an End to Remote Work?28 Jan 202500:18:15

Due to having a cold and somewhat scratchy voice, Camille is going to do something a little different with today's episode. She doesn't know if she's ever done this on the show but feels like this may make it a little easier to listen to her. And that is she is going to read an article that she came across on MarketWatch.

Not everyone has access to MarketWatch, but Camille is a subscriber because she thinks they put out some really great content, some informative articles, and she wants to share one of those with you today. She is going to read the article and if she read the whole thing, it would take about eight minutes. So, she may skip some parts. But she wants to actually read you the article so that you get all of the information.

And then at the end, she will give you her reactions to the article and what she thinks. Now the full title is called:  "Will Trump's Tough Stance on Remote Work Drag Everyone Else Back to the Office?" And then it says, "Don't Bet on It."  She also wants you to know that she does not intend to get political in this episode.

So, what she is really wanting to do is just talk about what's happening at the federal level and how she thinks that may impact what we're going to see related to remote work. But rather than just tell her opinion, she'd like for you to hear the article so that you can form your own opinion and see if you agree or disagree.

This article was published on January 25th, 2025. So at the time of this recording, that's about two days ago and it was written by Andrew Kasztner. Camille doesn't actually know who Andrew Kesner is and she could research him. But instead, she is going to trust that this person knows what they're talking about.

So, join her now as she reads this very interesting article.

Common Fears Shared by Job Seekers Over 5014 Jan 202500:24:07

Welcome back to the show and thank you for listening! Thank you for listening. You know, I haven't really thanked people for listening in a long time. It's probably because I haven't been recording a lot of podcasts. And I just assume that people aren't listening, but I want to thank you for showing up today.

Today, I felt compelled to address a topic that might resonate with many of you—fears that job seekers over 50 often share with me. While I typically focus on offering solutions, this episode is more about acknowledging and exploring those fears to help you feel less alone. Sometimes, simply hearing that others share your concerns can be more valuable than receiving advice. But, since I always like to give solutions, I’ll certainly offer some ideas and solutions. But in a way, I almost feel like it's more important for you to hear the fears and concerns that people have, because I think you may be feeling some of these same fears and concerns.

I want to boil them down to the ones that are most prevalent. The ones I hear about the most. So, number one will be age. I mean, that's kind of an obvious one, but number two will be gap in employment that comes up a lot. Number three would be outdated skills. Number four kind of the opposite. And that would be people who feel overqualified when all they really want is kind of an easier job. And then the last one would be having to take a pay cut or having their pay impacted in some way

Maybe you related to some of these, maybe you have your own. And if you do go ahead and just email us. There's a link here in the show notes.
hello@camilleattell.com

And you can just put in the title, My Fear. How about that? You can let us know what your fear is, and we'll address it; we'll talk about it. If it's similar to these or different or something specific, let us know. We're always really curious and we always have some really helpful tips and strategies and resources for you.

Welcome back to the show—or welcome if this is your first time listening. It’s the first episode of 2025, and I'll be kicking things off with a very popular topic. You’ve probably seen this subject all over the internet: the top trends in the job market. Whether it’s online work, remote work, in-person work, virtual work, or any other kind of work you can imagine, we will be diving into what’s ahead.

Talking about trends is a long-standing tradition here on The Remote Work Retirement Show. Since day one, I have been sharing insights on what’s shaping the way we work, and today, I'm going to narrow it down to the five most important trends for 2025. Plus, I'll discuss what you can do to adapt to or take advantage of these trends.

Here’s how I'm going to tackle it: First I will give you a high-level list, and then I’ll go through each trend in detail. And, of course, there will be micro-trends sprinkled along the way to give you the full picture.

The Five Top Job Market Trends for 2025

  1. Artificial Intelligence and Automation
How AI and automation are reshaping the workplace—and what it means for you.
  2. Skills-Based Hiring
The growing focus on skills over degrees and experience in recruitment.
  3. Human Skills vs. Tech Skills
Balancing interpersonal skills with the technical know-how demanded in today’s jobs.
  4. The Gig Economy
Why freelancing and gig work continue to grow and how to thrive in this space.
  5. Remote Work
No surprise here—it wouldn’t be The Remote Work Retirement Show without a deep dive into what’s next for remote work.

Wrap Up of My 6-week Hurricane Helene Volunteer Work30 Dec 202400:26:23

In episode 103, Camille breaks down her time in North Carolina and her volunteer work with the organization "All Hands and All Hearts" in the recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene that she started back in October. Six states were hit by this hurricane, with North Carolina being one of, if not the, hardest hit. Unexpectedly hard hit.

If you are a new listener to Camille’s podcasts, this is a big story, and you may want to start at the beginning with episodes 101 and 102 for more background and what led Camille to wanting to do this. If you are a returning guest, while it has taken a little longer for this episode to happen, you will not be disappointed by the wait. It’s exciting, emotional, informative, and so relatable.

This is a mostly freeform episode, and Camille will be sharing her most valuable insights, key points, tips, resources, experiences, and how remote work fits in. During this time, she got sick, did a lot of physical labor, met great people, formed friendships, and she even has a surprise to reveal. So, kick back, relax, and listen to what turned out to be a lifechanging experience for our Camille Attell.

Week Two: Hurricane Helene Disaster Recovery Lessons Learned30 Oct 202400:36:46

In this episode, Camille continues her volunteer work with All Hands and Hearts, helping with the disaster relief following hurricane Helene in North and South Carolina.

This week has been eventful, and she eager to share her experiences, even if it leans a bit toward self-reflection. There is value in her insights despite the personal nature of her reflections. Camille's intent is to balance sharing her journey with providing you something meaningful to take away, making this more than just a monologue. She wants to capture the essence of this week, not only for herself but also for anyone tuning in.

Currently, she is on the road, volunteering in North Carolina, having just come from South Carolina. Due to her travel circumstances, the audio quality may not match what you're used to, as she is recording with basic headphones instead of her usual microphone setup.

In this episode, Camille will cover four main topics, with a focus on All Hands and Hearts and the unique experience of volunteering remotely. First, she'll explain what the organization does, which is to provide both immediate relief and long-term rebuilding for communities affected by natural disasters. Founded in 2005, they mobilize volunteers from around the world, even those with no prior construction experience, to assist in disaster-stricken areas, including locations like the Caribbean, Nepal, and the U.S. Their response is swift; in North Carolina, they set up operations just three days after Hurricane Helene.

Next, she will highlight the collaborative approach of All Hands and Hearts, which partners with other organizations and governmental bodies like FEMA. This teamwork enhances the effectiveness of their relief efforts, ensuring that they can mobilize resources and support as needed. Each project site is staffed with experts who guide and train volunteers on the necessary tasks, from safety precautions to using tools properly. This mentorship is crucial for those learning on the job, and it demonstrates the importance of having experienced leaders available.

Lastly, she will connect her volunteering experience to the broader theme of working remotely. While many people focus on specific technical skills when seeking employment, the willingness to learn and adaptability are equally valuable. Just as All Hands and Hearts prioritizes trainable individuals, employers in any field often seek candidates with strong soft skills and a coachable mindset. So, don’t underestimate your potential; you likely possess transferable skills that can be developed further, whether in volunteer work or a remote job.

Day One: Helene Disaster Recovery with Bill Trinkle23 Oct 202400:38:02

In this episode. Camille introduces us to her friend, Bill Trinkle, in an interview about her upcoming volunteer efforts to assist with the Helene disaster recovery in the Ashville, North Carolins area, and how their mutual ties to that community has brought them together for a few days.

Bill and his wife, Porter, have hosted Camille for a few days so she can gather the rest of the supplies needed and have a day or two to get organized and prepare for her 6-week commitment to the cause. Since they are only a few hours from the ground site, they will be transporting Camille and her belongings to the base camp.

They will talk RVing and remote work, complete with an amusing story, and the more serious ramifications of the disastrous conditions Helene left in her wake. And, as in last week’s episode, Camille will also provide her direct link for donations to All Hands and Hearts, the organization with which Camille is volunteering.

If you haven't caught the previous episodes, you really should take the opportunity to go back and listen to those in order. Start with episode 96. 97, 98, and finally, this episode, 99. It is quite a journey.

After 33 days on the road, she has real insight into traveling with a trailer rather than a motor home, and the difficulties, and fun they had along the way. It was intense and exhilarating and exhausting.

But they got to visit old friends and new friends and favorites spots along the way. There were even some turtles and fish involved. So, once again, let’s join Camille as she continues this last part of her journey, a journey which incorporated remote work into all aspects. Listen as she tells you how.

Road Trip with Me: Solar Eclipse Part 323 Apr 202400:20:16

In episode 98, we pick up with Part 3 of Road Trip with Me: Solar Eclipse.

If you've been listening to the whole series since part one, Camille has talked about the journey of going out to Paris, Texas, which is where she and her husband were going to view the solar eclipse. In part two, she talked about getting to Paris and gearing up for the event.

Today Camille is finally going to talk about the actual solar eclipse. So, this was a pretty big buildup, sort of like a Netflix release where there's all this hype and marketing and you're just waiting for the actual event itself.

It wasn’t planned that way, that's just how it turned out. It is a bit of storytelling, and it is a departure from her show norm, which is pretty much practical tips, information and resources about remote work. However, a number of people have told her that they really do enjoy it when she does a little bit of storytelling and goes off the beaten path because they just like to follow along with the journey.

So, let’s join her for this next installment …
